Individual facilitation: a personal and professional leadership perspective.

The hypothesis of this research was that Personal and Professional Leadership Individual Facilitation (PPLIF) could help people with problems or who are in difficult situations to deal with the problems they are experiencing. The main aim and objective of this research was to describe the nature and importance of PPLIF and suggest the possible contribution, it could make as a new concept in the Personal and Professional Leadership (PPL) field. The qualitative research methodology used in the research includes general, hermeneutic and descriptive strategies. The research methods used include a word and concept analysis, a literature study, and problem defining and critical analysis in order to clarify concepts central to the research. Case studies were also made to clarify the application of PPLIF to the problems experienced by participants from diverse backgrounds. PPLIF can be defined as a holistic leadership guide that helps an individual to grow in order to achieve his full potential. PPLIF is a facilitative approach. It presents a radical new method for addressing an individual's problems by obtaining information, developing new perspectives and therefore resolving problems that are deep-rooted in a person. PPLIF aims at a positive outcome and works with the here and now to change the future for the better. PPLIF is a structured conversation that is more facilitative than prescriptive and involves the support and encouragement of the client. PPLIF does not “solve” but tries to help to review options or choices. It uses informal facilitation to keep the client focused on the objectives of the session to clarify misunderstandings and support the person to solve problems themselves by achieving their goals. PPLIF consist of four stages: connecting, understanding, deciding and executing. These stages are designed and developed to increase personal, xiii interpersonal and professional growth strategies, which could lead to progressively higher forms of responsible independence and effective decision making. PPLIF aims to align the client with his/her goals. The PPLIF practitioner systematically develops the skills and leadership abilities of the client and helps the client realise where he wants to go. A PPLIF practitioner surveys the problem or situation by asking questions. The PPLIF practitioner tries to equip clients with the tools, knowledge and opportunities they need to develop themselves and to become successful. PPLIF’s clients are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning outcomes. PPLIF focuses on personal development and mastery, and could guide and support a client in situations where, for example, they have to cope with change, set goals, develop action plans, progress in careers, enhance self-esteem and restore a holistic life balance. PPLIF could thus enable people to gain greater control over their lives, which in turn will create a sense of meaning. The research concludes by indicating that PPLIF can make a valuable contribution to supporting people with problems in their lives. / Prof. DPJ Smith

The Effects Of The Combination Of Interview Practice In A Mixed-reality Environment And Coaching On The Interview Performance Of Young Adults With Intellectual Disabilities

The purpose of this study was to identify if a functional relationship exists between a treatment combination of interview practice in a mixed-reality learning modality (TLE TeachLivETM) and the use of individualized coaching sessions on the interview performance of young adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). Student participants took part in live preinterviews with the University of Central Florida (UCF) Office of Career Services measuring their current levels of employment interview performance. Student participants then engaged in interviews with avatars in the TLE TeachLivETM lab. After each treatment interview in the lab, student participants received individualized coaching sessions to assist them in improving their interview performance. Interview performance was rated in order to determine if the combination of interview practice and coaching increased student participant performance as measured on an interview rubric. Finally, student participants participated in live post-interviews with Office of Career Services to determine if the two-step instructional training intervention resulted in the improvement of interview performance in a natural, live setting. In addition, student participants, parents/primary caregivers, and an employee expert panel participated in a survey rating the goals, procedures, and outcomes of the study. Results indicated that the combination of interview practice in the TLE TeachLivETM setting and coaching was associated with immediate gains in the interview performance of student participants. Student participant performance also improved in live interview settings. Social validity data indicated that using this combination intervention was both valuable and appropriate in preparing individuals with ID for employment interviews.

This thesis deals with coaching with an emphasis on career and personal development. Coaching is becoming a new phenomenon which helps a person to discover and maximize his or her potential. Through in-depth qualitative research it has been established which coaching services people are most interested in. One of the sub goals of this thesis was also to analyze current tendencies and trends in coaching. The theoretical information from expert sources were verified in the practical part of this thesis and emerged from public enquiry that clients usually use coaching services which are concerned with interpersonal relationships, managing financial resources and improving their opportunities on the labour market. In conclusion of this work, I evaluate the performance of set goals for this thesis and propose recommendations for putting this subject matter into practice.

De nombreuses études (De Soir, Rivolier, Babin, Violanti, …) ont non seulement mis en évidence le stress vécu par les policiers dans l’exercice de leur fonction mais également démontré l’intérêt de modules de formation à la gestion du stress opérationnel à destination des acteurs de l’urgence dont les policiers. Il n’existe cependant pas de recherches ayant investigué les corrélats psycho-biologiques des bénéfices liés à l’acquisition d’une technique de préparation à la tâche recourant à l’hypnose et l’autohypnose chez les aspirants policiers. Les techniques d’hypnose ont par contre, fait l’objet de multiples recherches mettant en évidence son efficacité dans des affections et situations très diversifiées (Salem, Edgette, Fromm,….). L’existence de travaux récents (Kirschbaum et al, Meyerhoff et al, Dinsdale et al, Fontaine et al, Hurwitz et al, Sanders et al, …) indiquant que des facteurs de stress peuvent entraîner une sécrétion augmentée d’hormones de stress (dont le cortisol), une réactivité cardiovasculaire secondaire à certains facteurs de stress et une modulation des réponses immunitaires permettent de poser l’hypothèse que le fait d’intervenir dans un contexte hautement émotionnel (vidéo-tir reprenant des situations d’intervention avec utilisation possible de l’arme à feu) sera également associé à de telles constatations ainsi qu’à l’accentuation des réactions psychologiques.<p>L’acquisition d’une technique de préparation à la tâche recourant à l’hypnose et à l’autohypnose, permettrait donc une meilleure gestion du stress et réussite de cette tâche, pouvant ainsi réduire l’amplitude des réactions psychologiques et physiologiques secondaires au stress psychologique associé à la situation présentée sur vidéo-tir.<p> / Doctorat en Sciences Psychologiques et de l'éducation / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Improving the lifestyles of previously disadvantaged individuals through a personal life planning programme

There is scant research concerning youth development programmes specifically from Adler's (1968) Individual Psychology perspective. Current programmes seem to be void of critical issues that are important in the local context because of their having a strong bias towards the Western perspective. Thus, the present research project sought firstly to assist the Previously Disadvantaged Youth (PDY) to develop constructive lifestyles characterised by self-mastery, encouragement, creativity and social interest. Secondly, it aimed to obtain specific local African input that would help expand the current Personal Life Planning Programme (PLPP) to one that addresses the unique needs and circumstances confronting South African PDYs today. Finally, it attempted to test the validity, scope and merit of Adler's theoretical assertion, within the context of the previously disadvantaged communities in South Africa, that all humans are engaged in a lifelong striving for superiority to overcome perpetual feelings of inferiority and life tasks. The latter objectives were addressed through the implementation of the PLPP. The study, as well as the related PLPP, is strongly founded on Adler's Individual Psychology (Adler, 1968; Ansbacher & Ansbacher 1956; Corsini & Wedding, 2005; Meyer et al., 2003; Prochaska & Narcross cited in Osborn, 2001). The relevant data were collected from a sample of matriculants from the PDY population living in a black township near Pretoria. The information was collected by means of the PLPP workbook; semi structured interviews, as well as, audiovisual equipment. A combination of a "Pre-structured Case Outline" and the related "Sequential Analysis" (Miles & Huberman, 1994, p. 85) was adopted, with the researcher undertaking the entire data management process. In addition to confirming the applicability of Adler's theory within the PDY context, the findings suggest that the research objectives were significantly met, i.e. the participants reported and displayed marked lifestyle improvements along with specific life skills development needs related to their deprivation. / Psychology / D.
