Petrophysic of the Host-rock to the Ore in the Lovisa Mine, Bergslagen / Petrofysik hos det malmnära sidoberget i Lovisagruvan, Bergslagen

Gilljam Päärt, Oscar January 2019 (has links)
The Bergslagen region has three base-metal mines operating today, and one of them is the Lovisa mine, which host a Zn-Pb-Ag deposit. The Lovisa mine is located in the Guldsmedshyttan area north of Lindesberg. The mine is part of in the X-Mine H2020 project that includes four different mines with the aim of an improved environmental resource management. The project aims at reducing the environmental impact from transport, ore processing and chemical handling as well as result in lowering the costs per produced amount of metal. The purpose for this thesis is to determine the petrophysical characteristics of the host rocks to the thin tabular mineralised units in the Lovisa mine with petrophysics. Petrophysics is used to obtain information about the physical properties of rocks, which is then is integrated with geophysics and the geology, to obtain an improved understanding about the different geophysical anomalies. The petrophysic methods used here, reviled three different physical properties of the rocks: density, magnetic volume susceptibility and natural remanent magnetization. These properties were measured on five different drill cores and correlated with the literature data and lithologies of the core. The lithologies close to the ore correspond to literature data for volcanic siltstone, volcanic sandstone, massive rhyolite, skarn (calc-silicates) and dolomite. Dolomite is not present in the cores and corresponds to breccia, volcanic sandstone and skarn. My conclusion for this method, is that in order to do a lithological interpretation based on the measured petrophysical properties, is that a good knowledge of the lithologies as well as a good understanding of the geological processes that have affected the rocks in the investigated area are required. / H2020 X-mine

Caracterização de reservatórios não convencionais Shale Gas na Formação Barreirinha Bacia do Amazonas / Shale Gas Reservoir characterization in Barreirinha Formation Amazonas Basin

Siana Soares de Oliveira 16 March 2015 (has links)
The Devonian black shale of Barreirinha formation is characterized by high radioactivity in the basal portion, large areal extension, thickness and depth of burial variable which ranges from exposure to surface to depth greater than 3000 m. This formation contains the main source rocks of conventional petroleum system of the Amazonas Basin, and recently were considered promising unconventional gas plays. Shales are generally characterized by a closed die, which makes them relatively impervious for gas flow unless fracturing occur, and depending on their geological and geochemical characteristics they might behave as a selfcontained Petroleum System, acting as both source rock and as a gas reservoir (Shale gas reservoir). Thus, the thermogenic or biogenic gas generated can be stored in shale rich in organic matter in free form, adsorbed or dissolved state. In contrast to conventional petroleum systems, Shale Gas reservoirs, have trapping mechanisms and unique storage, requiring the use of specific assessment techniques. However, prolific shale can usually be recognized based on some basic parameters: geological and sedimentary architecture, geochemical and petrophysical properties and mineralogical composition. Given the lack of descriptive research, about the exploration potential of the Barreirinha formations shale, this dissertation aims to introduce a methodology of identification of intervals that could be potential shale gas reservoirs. Starting with a regional research about the geological and sedimentary context, followed by a comprehensive review focusing on the geochemical characteristics, petrophysical and lithofacies based on the integration of the parameters obtained by well log, geochemical analysis and application of Sequence Stratigraphy concepts.

Evolution des propriétés réservoir des carbonates peu poreux : exemple des calcaires du Crétacé Inférieur de la Moyenne Durance / Tight Carbonates Reservoir Properties Evolution : A case study of Lower Cretaceous hemipelagic limestone from the Northern Provence region

Bruna, Pierre-olivier 11 October 2013 (has links)
Hemipelagic limestones from the South-East of France are characterized by low values of porosity and permeability that allow considering these rocks as potential analogs to unconventional oil and gas reservoirs or fissured aquifers. These reservoirs are of primary importance in today’s economical context where the energy and the water’s demands grow with the increase in the world population. Nevertheless, the industrial exploitation of such reservoirs faces series of environmental risks and technical challenges that require to be managed in order to reduce their footprint on the environment. This work brought a significant amount of new data on unconventional carbonate reservoirs. It highlights how important compaction features (stylolites, microstylolites, solution seams) may be to fluids storage in such reservoirs. It shows that the diagenetic evolution of hemipelagic carbonate sediments depends on both early processes (sorting, early cementation, differential compaction) and eventual late reactivations (under tectonic stress inversion for example). Coupling three-dimensional modeling with geostatistics appear as an accurate and fast protocol to identify key elements (facies, fractures and stylolite) that play a role in the petrophysical heterogeneity of such unconventional reservoirs. This method also allows identifying equiprobable models of fractures geobodies and investigating the distribution of flow preferential pathways.

[en] PERMEABILITY PREDICTIONS USING BOREHOLE LOGS AND WELL TESTING DATA: A MACHINE LEARNING APPROACH / [pt] PREVISÕES DE PERMEABILIDADE UTILIZANDO PERFIS À POÇO ABERTO E DADOS DE TESTE DE FORMAÇÃO: UMA ABORDAGEM COM APRENDIZADO DE MÁQUINAS

[en] This work investigates the performance of intelligent models on the forecasting of permeability in heterogeneous reservoirs. Production logs are used to compute loss functions for regression in the algorithms optimization process. A flow profile interpretation method is used to remove wellbore skin effects from the measured flow rate. Additionally, a segmentation technique is applied to high-resolution ultrasonic image logs which provide not only the image of mega and giga pore systems but also identify the permeable facies along the reservoir. The image segmentation jointly with other borehole logs provides the necessary input data for the models training process. The estimations presented herein demonstrate the algorithms ability to learn non-linear relationships between geological input variables and a reservoir dynamic data even if the actual physical relationship is complex and not known a priori. Though the preprocessing stages of the procedure involve some data interpretation expertise, the algorithms can easily be coded in any programming language, requiring no assumptions on physics in advance. The proposed procedure provides more accurate permeability curves than those obtained from conventional methods, which may fail to predict the permeability measured on drill stem tests (DSTs) conducted in dual-porosity reservoirs. The novelty of this work is to incorporate dynamic production logging (PL) data into the permeability estimation workflow using machine learning algorithms.

Geophysical 3D models of Paleoproterozoic Iron Oxide Apatite mineralization’s and Related Mineral Systems in Norrbotten, Sweden / Geofysiska 3D Modeller av Paleoproterozoiska Järnoxidapatit-mineraliseringar och Relaterade Mineralsystem i Norrbotten, Sverige

Rydman, Oskar January 1900 (has links)
The Northern Norrbotten ore district hosts a multitude of Sweden’s mineral deposits including world class deposits such as the Malmberget and Kirunavaara Iron oxide apatite deposits, the Aitik Iron oxide copper gold deposit, and a multitude of smaller deposits. Northern Norrbotten has been shaped by tectonothermal events related to the evolution of the Fennoscandian Shield and is a geologically complex environment. Without extensive rock outcropping and with most drilling localized to known deposits the regional to local scale of mineralization is not fully understood. To better understand the evolution and extent of the mineralization’s cross-disciplinary geosciences must be applied, where geophysical methods allow for interpretations of the deep and non-outcropping subsurface. Common earth modelling is a term describing a joint model derived from all available geoscientific data in an area, where geophysical models provide the framework. This study describes the geophysical modeling of two IOA deposits in Norrbotten, the Malmberget deposit in Gällivare and the Per-Geijer deposit in Kiruna. To better put these two deposits into a semi-regional setting magnetotelluric (MT) measurements have been conducted together with LKAB. LTU and LKAB have measured more than 200 MT stations in the two areas from 2016-2023. These measurements have then been robustly processed into magnetic transfer functions (impedances) for the broadband MT frequency spectrum (1000Hz,1000s). Then, all processed data judged to be of sufficient quality have been used for 3D inversion modelling using the ModEM code. The resulting conductivity/resistivity models reveals the local conductivity structure of the area, believed to be closely tied to the mineralization due to the conductive properties of the iron bearing minerals. Both areas yielded believable models which pinpointed known mineralization’s at surface as conductive anomalies and their connections to deeper regional anomalies.During modelling a robust iteratively re-weighted least square (IRLS) scheme has been implemented in the inversion algorithms. This scheme allows for objective re-weighting of data errors based on the ability for a given model discretization to predict individual datums. This, to better identify measurements which have been contaminated by local electromagnetic noise due to anthropogenic sources (mainly the power grid and railway). Due to the mathematical properties of the scheme, it allows for models which minimizes the L1 data error-norm instead of usual L2 minimization. This has yielded models whit sharper contrasts in resistivity and successfully emphasizes data believed to be reliable. Results indicate that the scheme was implemented successfully and the tradeoffs in data-fit are deemed acceptable. In addition, in the Kiruna study potential field data (magnetic total field and gravimetry) have been 3D modelled for the same area. These data sets have been inversion modelled in 3D using the MR3D-code developed at LTU with partners. Resulting 3D models have then been interpreted collectively both traditionally and with the use of machine learning methods. To guide interpretations more than 100 rock samples have been collected in the area and their petrophysical properties (density, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity) have been measured at LTU. These petrophysical properties have been used to guide the machine learning methods for the 3D models by first using K-mean clustering on normalized petrophysical data and then using the resulting centroid vectors as input for a Gaussian mixture model of the similarly normalized 3D models. Resulting clusters show potential in being able to pick up sharp geological boundaries but expectedly is unable to fully capture geological structures one to one.

Influência da petrotrama, textura e mineralogia sobre parâmetros geomecânicos de arenitos: O caso da formação Piramboia / Influence of petrofabric, texture and mineralogy on geomechanical parameters of sandstones: the case of the Piramboia Formation

Fiorini, Paulo 14 November 2018 (has links)
The uniaxial compressive strength and the deformability modulus are parameters that describe the behavior of rock materials under stress. It is an everyday practice in geological and geotechnical investigations for engineering projects to estimate strength in a preliminary fashion, based on properties such as tenacity, toughness and friability, attributing to the rock a qualitative term describing its strength. Laboratorial data on physical, textural and mineralogical aspects of sandstones of the Piramboia Formation, Paraná Basin, obtained by core drillings in the region of Anhembi and Santa Maria da Serra, state of São Paulo, were correlated to each other and to geomechanical parameters such as uniaxial compressive strength, deformability modulus and qualitative terms describing their strength. The recognized sandstone facies were grouped in dune and interdune associations and their rocks were classified as quartz arenites and feldspathic arenites or subarkoses, whose cementation is mainly composed of smectite or ferruginous clay material. Significant correlations of uniaxial compressive strength with mean grain size and density were found, inverse in the first case and direct in the second. On the other hand, the deformability modulus showed a significant inverse correlation with the amount of pelitic material, and direct with mean grain size, standard deviation of grain size distribution and packing density. Sandstones characteristic of ephemeral floods in the domain of wet interdunes, with greater amounts of pelitic material, presented low values of deformability modulus and high strength values compared to the other facies. Variations in the mineral composition of the framework were not sufficient to significantly influence the geomechanical behavior of the sandstones.

Caractérisations structurale et pétrophysique d'un système géothermique en contexte volcanique d'arc de subduction : exemple de l’archipel de Guadeloupe / Structural and petrophysical characterizations of a geothermal system in a subduction volcanic setting : Guadeloupe archipelago

Navelot, Vivien 31 October 2018 (has links)
The Vieux-Habitants area gathers indicators allowing to suppose a high-temperature hydrothermal system. The interpretation of geophysical data acquired for the exploration of this system requires the analysis of analogues. Several hydrothermal paleo-systems were studied in order to propose a conceptual model of a geothermal system for the Vieux-Habitants area. Studies of these analogues are based on a multi-scale study of the brittle deformation and a petrophysical characterization of the different volcanic rocks. The organization of fractures indicates the occurrence of a characteristic scale for each level of observation. Volcano-sedimentary units are far less deformed compared to highly fractured lavas. The brittle deformation in volcano-sedimentary deposits is highly localized in fractured corridors. Some fault intersections control major fluid flow at the kilometer scale. Moreover, the most hydrothermalized rocks are localized in the vicinity of these intersections. Volcanic rocks are divided according to their mechanism of formation (lava, debris flow…) and their degree of alteration. They exhibit strong heterogeneities of petrophysical properties. Fresh rocks are separated in two distinct groups, on one side lavas and on the other side debris flows and pyroclastic deposits. Hydrothermal alteration produces mineralogical replacements involving a complete reorganization of both the matrix skeleton and the pore network. It is marked by a removal of magnetic signal, an increase of porosity and permeability in lavas and a decrease of these properties in debris flows and pyroclastic deposits. Therefore, hydrothermalized rocks form a group with intermediate reservoir properties between the two groups of fresh rocks. The reservoir model combines both structural components and lithological heterogeneities that allow an efficient fluid transfer, whereas the matrix properties of primary and secondary origins will rather control the fluid and heat storage properties.
