Through the lens : using auto-driven photo-elicitation to capture the development of career aspirations of business management and fine art students

Turley, Helene January 2018 (has links)
The uniqueness of this study is primarily in the application of a visual research methodology to generate knowledge and understanding in an area that is often associated with quantitative research. Careers and employment research typically focuses on statistical information which can provide general information but does not give an in-depth understanding of the area under study. Visual research can give an in-depth understanding; in addition to giving access to a different kind of knowledge, supported by Harper (2002) who proposes “that images can evoke deeper elements of human consciousness than words alone.” I explore the various ways in which students perceive and develop different career aspiration including what motivates and what might inhibit students’ development of their career aspirations. This understanding will enhance my professional practice and encourage the Careers and Employment department within the University to adapt their service and give students the relevant tools and information to prepare them for employment. A visual research methodology is utilised as this fits comfortably with my background in art and gives the in-depth knowledge I require for my research (see Clark-Ibáñez, 2004; Collier (1957); Collier and Collier, 1986; Cousin, 2009; Guillemin and Drew, 2010; Harper, 2002; Harris and Guillemin, 2012 and O’Brien, 2013 for further information on the benefits of using a visual research methodology). Auto-driven photo-elicitation (ADPE) is used with six fine art and six business management students. These students often have less career direction and tend to struggle to secure graduate level positions (Swani, 2016); in addition, the two subject areas were chosen because they are a contrast in terms of how their curriculum is delivered. Using visual research to inform careers and employment is unique and through sharing my research and research experience I want to initiate a shift in how careers and employment research is approached in the future. In addition to the uniqueness of using a visual research methodology in careers and employment my findings indicate there are five orientations business management and fine art students’ use when developing their career aspirations: a strong sense of direction, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, weak planning and dreams. This research discusses the five orientations and the factors that might contribute to a rich learning environment for career building. Subject and professional identity are discussed in relation to identity formation and career building. Four main sources of identity formation are identified: identity through being (transition from study to profession), identity through self-discovery, identity through belonging (concerning the informal and cultural aspects of community life), and identity through peripheral participation (activities that are akin to peripheral participation in a professional community). This research establishes there is a relationship between the development and building of identity and self-efficacy through belonging, professional experience and working alongside mentors when developing strategies to develop career aspirations.

Visualising ethnicity in the Southwest Borderlands : gender and representation in Late Imperial and Republican China

Zhu, Jing January 2018 (has links)
This thesis explores the mutual constitutions of visuality and empire from the perspective of gender, probing how the lives of China's ethnic minorities at the southwest frontiers were translated into images. Two sets of visual materials make up its core sources: the Miao album, a genre of ethnographic illustration depicting the daily lives of non-Han peoples in late imperial China, and the ethnographic photographs found in popular Republican-era periodicals. The study highlights gender ideals within images and aims to develop a set of 'visual grammar' of depicting the non-Han. Casting new light on a spectrum of gendered themes, including femininity, masculinity, sexuality, love, body and clothing, the thesis examines how the power constructed through gender helped to define, order, popularise, celebrate and imagine possessions of empire. In order to examine the visual transformations of images of non-Han, this study places the Miao albums and modern photographs side-by-side for comparison, revealing the different ways of seeing ethnic minorities when Han Chinese gender norms were de/reconstructed. The insights into the visual codes of gender also aim to place Chinese imperial models in a cultural context, testing how well the case of China fits into theories of empire generated mainly from European models. This thesis asks how imported imperial tools, in particular European technology and the science of human variations, were localised within the conceptualisation of nations in modern China. It also considers the relationship between text and image in historical analysis, uncovering the values of images to historians in novel ways. By taking an interdisciplinary approach, the thesis aims to contribute to the fields of gender, visual culture and imperial studies.

Modelagem matemática com fotografias

Rocha, Josy January 2013 (has links)
In this work is investigated the students' perception about mathematics present in photographs, as well as the possibility of using photos as learning tools. We (I and the students) analyze photos from local historical monuments and buildings of the architecture from other countries. The geometry was approached with different focus from the traditional teaching, whose main strategy is solving exercises, adopting the repetition technique for knowledge transmission. Instead, in the present work, mathematical modelling was adopted as teaching strategy, creating opportunities and encouraging students to participate in the process of constructing their own knowledge. Aiming to demystify mathematics as the science that always produces accurate results, was introduced the idea of error, which is inherent to all experimental activities.

Desiderio, Raphaela de Toledo January 2017 (has links)
This is an experimentation-research. A research that is understood as an experimentation happening as thought, as creation, as a subjectivation power. A thought-experimentation with and through images that takes place in Geographic Education. This research intends to problematize didactic photographs of the African continent in didactic geography books and tries to find statements and discursive formations which show Africa as a stereotype and as a land of otherness. It is a set of practices of the thought which aim to displace the imaginary created around the continent using images to that end. It first tries to comprehend what is the idea of Africa in Geography didactic books and which are their implications to the construction of the continent imaginary, adopting for this purpose a geographic approach of the racial question. In this regard, it takes as reference the dialogue between the geographic education and the field of African and Postcolonial/Culture Studies, hence exploring the elements of the colonial discourse. It also considers the coloniality of the power, the colonial difference and the colonial-capitalistic unconscious as central notions, inasmuch as they are intrinsic to the formation of the modern/colonial world-system and so to the capitalism. In that perspective it finally ponders the invention of race as the responsible for the enabling of two big modern events: the African trade and the colonization. After this first movement of thought, the research secondly turns to the practice of creating modes to displace the African continent photographs of their places of representation, documentation and still evidence, moving them to practices of the thought which are able to allow subjectivations with and through these images in the Geographic Education, thus intending to face the ethnical-racial questions and the education through images in Basic Education. Hence, it problematizes the spatiality of the racial question, turning the analysis to the comprehension of the inversions and fabrications surrounding Africa and its peoples. These practices of the thought with and through images tried to disturb, destabilize, disrupt and disarrange the established sequence of study that the African continent has in didactic books, thus using a collage technique to create “photo-africas” compositions which could, by the ability of creation of the thought, give Africa a chance to escape from the usual place the continent has on the their pages. These experimentations intend thereby to drag the thought to other places, giving it a chance to be affected by “other Africas”, Africas of affections, Geography of affectations. As a result of this research, it was seen that the practice of dismantling Africa in us it’s from the order of the sensible, therefore being urgent to act on this dimension in order to create in our practices with images, both in Geographic Education as in life in general, another modes of seeing, feeling and hearing Africas. Experimenting is thus from the order of the creation through sensibility, and so the practices with the images made possible the emergence of an environment of discussions about Africa which have shown, in the Geographic Education, the tension between the strength of the didactic photographs, which act as clichés, authenticating, validating and reproducing hegemonic eurocentrical discourses, and their mismatch in relation to the guidelines to the Education to Ethnical-Racial Relations. At the same time, these practices provided encounters with and through photographs, opening new possibilities and mobilizing the thought to the known of images as more than representations, to their presence as powers and possibilities of seeing and feeling another Africas, Africas that can emerge from encounters with literature, for instance, but which substantially and certainly emerge strongest through the life that pulses and though the desire of changing the order of the established things. A falta de nitidez das imagens de satélite dificulta a identificação de pequenas áreas de cobertura vegetal; o SIG-Idrisi apresentou discrepâncias para a determinação de perímetros, em função de trabalhar de forma matricial e que o SPLAN, é próximo do Carta Linx, para a determinação de áreas e perímetros, devido ao fato de ambos trabalharem de forma vetorial / The great importance of citrus in São Paulo, particularly in Botucatu, its major expansion in area in recent years and the advanced techniques for environmental monitoring, such as remote sensing, are all factors that have motivated the present research. The aim of this study was to evaluate the spatial and temporal changes of citrus in Botucatu-SP from 1962 to 2005. For this, was used, panchromatic aerial photographs from 1962, 1972 and 1977, color ones from 2000 and 2005, Landsat satellite images from 2000 and 2005. Along with those, Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems were also used in order to evaluate the differences in determining areas and perimeters, by using software such as CartaLinx, GISIdrisi and SPLAN. The results showed that the area occupied by citrus in Botucatu-SP was 5.22% of the total area of the county in 2000. In 2005, it represented 8.63%, showing a 3.41% increase of the total area and an expansion of 65.27% of the citrus area within five years, being that during the period of 43 years (1962-2005), there was an increase of 12722.56 ha of this area. The areas obtained from aerial photographs and evaluated with CartaLinx present values closer to ground truth for the determination of areas and perimeters. The lack of accuracy in the satellite images makes it difficult to identify small areas of vegetation. GISIdrisi showed discrepancies in perimeter determination, as it works with matrixes. SPLAN is similar to CartaLinx for the determination of areas and perimeters, due to the fact that both work with vectors
