The Link between Child Physical Abuse and Violent Victimization: A Case of China

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Child development scholars have demonstrated a host of negative outcomes of child physical abuse, including emotional problems, delinquency, and future victimization. However, it is unclear if child physical abuse during childhood is related to subsequent violent victimization during youth and young adulthood. Building on routine activity theory and prior research, and using data collected from 2,245 individuals in Changzhi, China, this study examines if the experience of child physical abuse is positively related to violent victimization in youth and young adulthood, and if the relationship between child physical abuse and violent victimization is mediated by an individual’s routine activities. The results from negative binomial regressions support routine activity theory. The implications of the findings for theory, research and practice are discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Criminology and Criminal Justice 2016

Impact of Childhood Abuse on the Course of Bipolar Disorder: A Replication Study in U.S. Veterans

Brown, George R., McBride, Linda, Bauer, Mark S., Williford, William O. 01 December 2005 (has links)
Background: The association between early childhood abuse and the course of illness, including psychiatric comorbidities, in adults with bipolar disorder has not been examined in a predominantly male or veteran population. Methods: As part of the VA Cooperative Study 430, "Reducing the Efficacy-Effectiveness Gap in Bipolar Disorder," 330 veterans (91% male) with bipolar I or II disorder who were enrolled in a 3-year prospective study were examined for baseline data obtained at study entry. Diagnoses were determined by the use of the SCID. A semistructured interview designed to elicit data about exposure to childhood physical, sexual, or combined abuse was conducted as part of baseline demographic and clinical information. Other reports from this data set have not addressed the issues of childhood adversity. Results: Childhood abuse was reported by 48.3% of the subjects (47.3% of men). Any abuse (AA) was reported by 48.3%; sexual abuse without physical abuse (SA) was reported by 8%, physical abuse without sexual abuse (PA) by 20.7%, and both types of abuse (combined abuse, CA) by 18.7% of the male subjects. Female veterans reported more SA (27%) and less PA (6.7%). AA subjects were more likely to have current PTSD and lifetime diagnoses of panic disorder and alcohol use disorders. CA was associated with lower SF-36 Mental scores, higher likelihood of current PTSD and lifetime diagnoses of alcohol use disorders, as well as more lifetime episodes of major depression and higher likelihood of at least one suicide attempt. Younger age at study entry was associated with AA and PA. Limitations: Potential limitations include generalizability beyond the male, veteran population of patients with bipolar disorder and the methodology used to elicit abuse histories. Conclusions: Similar to studies of predominantly female nonveteran samples, this study extends the finding that a history of childhood abuse acts as a disease course modifier in male veterans with bipolar disorder. Clinicians should routinely seek information regarding abuse and be aware that these patients may be more difficult to treat than bipolar patients who have no abuse histories.

Effect of Simulated Storage and Distribution on Listeria innocua Growth in Non-traditional Salad Ingredients

Sandquist, Emma L 01 January 2021 (has links) (PDF)
The fresh-cut produce industry has seen expansive growth in recent years, to meet consumer demand ready-to-eat (RTE) salads have included the use of non-traditional ingredients. Uncommon ingredients include beet greens, kale, broccoli stalk, and Brussels sprouts, since these ingredients have not historically been consumed raw, potential food safety issues should be reassessed. Current processing technologies include produce washes that can reduce microbial levels but do not eradicate all populations. The lack of a kill step in produce processing emphasizes the need to minimize pathogen contamination during production and growth during a product’s shelf life. Listeria monocytogenes, a leading cause of foodborne illness related deaths, continues to challenge the industry with recent outbreaks and recalls of fresh-cut produce. These events present the need to better understand L. monocytogenes growth potential in RTE produce during storage and distribution. Traditional salad greens have been researched extensively, however, limited knowledge is available on new inclusions. While temperature is known to strongly influence microbial growth, the effects of physical abuse during storage and distribution are unknown. The purpose of this study was to characterize L. innocua’s, a surrogate for L. monocytogenes, growth behavior in processed beet greens, kale, broccoli stalk, and Brussels sprouts when exposed to simulated physical and thermal abuses during storage and distribution. To evaluate L. innocua growth during storage and distribution produce samples were obtained from a local processor in retail packaging and surface inoculated. The samples were conditioned at 4℃ for 18h prior to being exposed to a series of physical abuses (compression, drop, and vibration) typical of storage and distribution. After abuse, produce was incubated at 4 or 8°C and sampled post-abuse through 16 and 11 days, respectively. Samples were enumerated for L. innocua, aerobic and psychrotrophic microorganisms, and lactic acid bacteria. To monitor growing conditions in each vegetable, product pH, water activity, and headspace (gas analysis), were observed at each time pull. The study found physical abuse had no significant effect on L. innocua, or microbiota growth regardless of vegetable or incubation temperature (P > 0.05). Vegetable intrinsic factors (pH, Aw, and headspace) did not seem to interfere in L. innocua or background microbiota growth during incubation. All vegetables supported L. innocua growth under 8℃. Growth of L. innocua was greatest in beet greens, followed by kale, broccoli stalk, and Brussels sprouts in descending order. Significant growth of L. innocua at 4 and 8ᵒC was seen on day 6 and 4 in beet greens, 11 and 6 in Brussels sprouts, 16 and 4 in kale, and 16 and 6 in broccoli stalk (P < 0.05). Overall, these results show the studied RTE vegetables can support L. monocytogenes growth during storage and distribution, especially under abusive temperatures, demonstrating the importance of prevention strategies during processing and refrigeration throughout RTE produce shelf life.

När det otänkbara händer barnet : Fysiska övergrepp mot barn i förskoleåldern. En textanalys om bemötande och åtgärder i en kommunal förskola, kontra ett föräldrakooperativ.

Olsson, Malin January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores how a local nursery school and a parents cooperative attitude and actions looks like when it comes to children who are victims of physical abuse . Work is based on the questions: Have the two preschools guidelines for dealing with the problem of physical abuse of children? What similarities are there in the guidelines when it comes to attitude and actions?  What are the differences in the guidelines when it comes to attitude and actions? A comparison between the two preschools done through a textual analysis of two documents , parents' cooperative has a crisis and contingency plan and the municipal has a document in which an obligation. The analyzes will be conducted from a hermeneutic approach and in a qualitative processing. The work also deals with notification requirements preschool faced suspicion or concern arises among staff. Here you can also read about how the Social Services Act 14, Chapter 1, § reads before notification. The results show that there are differences between the preschools regarding treatment and measures but also that there is uncertainty in how staff should act

Understanding Cultural Context of Parenting to Define Child Abuse and Validate an Existing Measure on Child Physical and Emotional Abuse in South Indian Parents Living in Georgia

Laxmi, Anu 09 August 2016 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: Child maltreatment is a significant public health problem that affects all countries and cultures alike. Child maltreatment, which includes neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse and sexual abuse, can result in negative consequences that are lifelong and irreversible. Previous studies have shown the prevalence of all forms of child abuse in India, which is also home to one fifth of the world’s children. However, adequate resources and efforts are not being made to understand the true scope of this problem. AIM: The present study utilized an existing measure, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), to understand how parents from the South Indian culture defined acceptable child rearing practices and physical and emotional child abuse. The items from the physical and emotional abuse subscales on the CTQ were also tested for validity and reliability. It was hypothesized that fathers would report higher scores on the physical abuse subscale and mothers would report higher scores on the emotional abuse subscale. It was also hypothesized that parents would find spanking to be an acceptable form of discipline and note that both child physical and emotional abuse are not prevalent in the South Indian community residing in the United States. METHODS: This study recruited 41 participants (21 mothers and 20 fathers) to complete the CTQ. Of the total number of participants, ten were randomly assigned to participate in an in-depth interview, which focused on how parents in the South Indian community in Georgia interpreted the items on the CTQ and how parents defined child physical and emotional abuse. Reliability and validity testing was conducted using data analysis software SPSS 23.0. Qualitative analysis of the interviews involved Consensual Qualitative Research, identifying common themes among all ten interviews. RESULTS: Quantitative analysis revealed low to moderate internal consistency for the emotional abuse scale (α = 0.65) and moderate to high internal consistency for the physical abuse scale (α = 0.88). Independent t-test results showed that fathers reported higher scores on both the physical and emotional abuse subscale; however, these results were not significant. Using the Consensual Qualitative Research method, six domains were determined from the interviews. These included: (a) parent perspectives on child rearing practices, (b) spanking as a discipline practice, (c) country differences between India and the United States regarding discipline, (d) prevalence of abuse among the South Indian community in the United States, (e) reporting child abuse, and (f) parents’ awareness of resources to develop parenting skills. A majority of participants reported spanking as an acceptable form of discipline and believed that neither child physical nor emotional abuse was prevalent in the South Indian community in the United States. CONCLUSION: This study serves as formative research and encourages further investigation of different forms of child abuse in Indian populations, specifically child physical and emotional abuse. Understanding how a culture views children and child rearing practices is important in determining how abuse is defined within said culture. Societies that are more lenient and accepting of violence in general are at a greater risk for perpetrating the maltreatment of children. Establishing a concise definition of child abuse will aid in the development of valid measures that will determine the actual scope of the problem and create solutions, such as laws and policies that will shift a society’s view on appropriate interactions with children.

Social Learning of Attitudes toward Deception in Adult Survivors of Child Victimization

Dunivan, Michelle January 2012 (has links)
Child maltreatment is extremely prevalent and leads to a host of negative effects, both immediately and long term. Instances of maltreatment are often accompanied by deception, both by the perpetrator, as well as by the victim in order to avoid stigma and protect family. Thus, this study investigated social learning of deception through instances of maltreatment. 413 young adults completed an online survey assessing current attitudes toward deception, childhood maltreatment including child sexual abuse, child physical abuse, witnessing interparental violence, psychological abuse, neglect and parental addiction, social support, and participant addiction. Results indicated that neglect and psychological abuse during childhood, and current addiction were associated with a positive attitude toward deception. Severity of CSA and severity of neglect each interacted with role (agent or target) in the deceptive scenario to determine attitude toward deception. Severity of CPA interacted with perceived social support to determine attitude toward deception. Furthermore, victim's awareness of deception by perpetrators of CSA was associated with a more negative attitude toward deception. These findings support both attachment theory and social learning explanations for adulthood attitude toward deception. Attachment theory explains why neglected and psychologically abused individuals find their own deception more acceptable and other's deception less acceptable than their non-neglected counterparts, and why the opposite pattern is true for victims of CSA; and social learning theory's emphasis on attention and reinforcement to motivate behavior are supported by these findings.

Maus-tratos físicos de crianças: contribuições para a avaliação de fatores de risco psicossociais / Physical maltreatment of children: contributions to the evaluation of psychosocial risk factors

Bergamo, Lilian Paula Degobbi 26 November 2007 (has links)
Child maltreatment is a complex problem that involves in your etiology several factors, being necessary a multiform perspective to understand it. The Ecological-Systemic approach of human development and the Transactional theoretical model presuppose, respectively, the existence of several contexts and variables of risk that are influenced itself mutually for the production of the maltreatments. The present study aimed to establish whether exists or not association between certain risk factors relating to parents and physical abuse in Brazilian reality. The psychological aspects investigated were: distress, level of stress associated to the parental function, level of social support, parental style and historical of maltreatments in the own childhood. Two groups composed by thirty participants were compared (n=60): the first one was composed by parents who were reported to child protection agencies due to physical abuse against their children (Clinical Group) and the second one had no historical abuse (comparison group) composed by convenience form indications from the community. Both group were matched in social-demographics characteristics, as economic and educational level, conjugal situation and number of own children or children under its cares. The instruments used for data collection were: Child Abuse Potential Inventory CAP; the Parenting Stress Index ISP; the Inventário de Estilos Parentais IEP; the Questionário de Apoio Social QAS and the Entrevista da História da Infância do Adulto. Instruments were codified and statistical analyses were made to compare data from the two groups. Significance level was p 0,05. Results pointed out significant differences between the two groups for most of the dimensions from CAP Abuse Scale: distress, rigidity, problems with child and self, and problems from others. It was also verified a higher risk potential for physical abuse related to the participants of the clinical group. With regards to ISP, the groups presented differences related to the child\'s characteristic dimension and in its total score, pointing that clinical group has more stress during interactions with their children than comparison group. The IEP showed differences between groups only for the dimension of positive supervision, denoting that the clinical group uses less frequently positive practices in the children\'s education. QAS differentiated the groups in the dimensions of affective support, of positive social interaction and in the total score which means that clinical group has less social support than the comparison group. The analysis of the history of the Childhood indicated that in a general way, the adults belonging to the clinical group had lived more difficult situations than the comparison group. The two groups also differed in two specific social-demographic variables: the age of mother/father at the first child\'s birth and the satisfaction degree related to neighborhood, denoting that the participants of the clinical group were younger in the occasion of the first child\'s birth (median= 19 years old) and that they were also more unsatisfied with the home place. The results allow us to say that the variables that discriminate the two groups are indicators of risk for physical maltreatments in our social-cultural context. That corroborate with what is pointed in the scientific literature, with relation to factors that repeatedly have been showed associated to the problem of physical maltreatment in the international ambit. These results may help us, in Brazilian context, guiding the development and the evaluation of primary or secondary prevention programs in the community.

Child Neglect, Child Physical Abuse, and Relationships Among 12-Year-Old Girls

Dale, Corrine 01 January 2017 (has links)
Child maltreatment, including physical abuse, neglect, emotional, and sexual abuse is a continuing social problem in the United States, resulting in a number of children who experience challenges with family and peer relationships in adolescence. Child neglect is one of the most common forms of abuse however, it is less likely to be investigated or substantiated than is physical abuse. Female child maltreatment in particular results in possible problems for victims with family and peer relationships in early adolescence. In 2015, state agencies reported an estimated 683,000 victims of child maltreatment, with two-thirds of this group representing child neglect victims. This study examined differences between reported child neglect and child physical abuse in predicting family and peer relationship problems among 12-year-old females. Relational theory provided a theoretical framework for this study's hypotheses. Records from the Midwest site of the LONGSCAN research project provided the archival data from a criterion sample of 68 12-year-old females. The hypotheses were there would be differences in adolescent mother-child and peer relationships between victims of neglect and victims of physical abuse. Data were analyzed using descriptive, correlational, and multiple regression analyses. The results of the analyses revealed the quality of the mother-child relationship was significantly related to both earlier neglect and to physical abuse. In the multiple regression, early child neglect was more predictive of the mother-child relationship in early adolescence than was child physical abuse. This study contributes to social change by directing those who develop and design policy and programs to place additional attention on child neglect interventions to promote family stability.
