Community on Campus: The Role of Physical Space

Harrington, Kim D 10 January 2014 (has links)
COMMUNITY ON CAMPUS: THE ROLE OF PHYSICAL SPACE by Kim D. Harrington The physical environment of a college campus provides the context for learning and social interactions. These interactions lead to involved students, which help build community, and vibrant communities on college campuses contribute to student persistence and academic success (Kuh, Cruce, Shoup, Kinzie & Gonyea, 2008; Palmer, Maramba & Dancy, 2011; Strange & Banning, 2001; Tinto & Goodsell - Love, 1993). The purpose of this study was to explore the role of physical space on student involvement and community. The methodology was ethnography and the methods of data collection included photo elicitation and semi - structured interviews. This qualitative study presents the visual and interview data from 9 participants enrolled at a research university in the South. The student participants reported that they developed meaningful connections with their peers through interactions in outdoor spaces, student organization offices, academic facilities and recreational areas. The participants felt that many of the physical spaces encouraged interaction and helped to facilitate campus involvement. The findings of this work indicate that the natural and built environments at this university influenced how students discovered, built, and sustained community.

Abstract: This research investigates playing and its occupation in the school space in an elementary school in the city of Campinas. The research has as a central issue: How to promote the use of open spaces for playing in elementary school? The theoretical basis that underpin the research are based on authors as: Mayumi Souza Lima, Ana Lúcia Goulart de Faria, Viñao Frago, Escolano, Bencostta, Monarcha, Kishimoto, Brougère, among others. The objective is to unveil the relationship of children, teachers, parents and employees with the open spaces in the elementary school and with the action of playing in these spaces. An ethnographical research was conducted in an elementary school in the city of Campinas (SP) in the years of 2008 and 2009. The choice of this school was made due to the peculiarity of the land where the school building is, its architeture, and the commitment of the school community to make better use of school spaces. This case study required an extensive bibliographical research, analysis of the architectural plant design, of the school construction criterion, the environmental law, the political pedagogical project and the photos. Questionaries were applied and some members of team from school and members of school community, participants for C.P.A. (Commission Own Evaluation) were interviewed. The category that helped in the thematic comprehension was the space and its different particularities: the space as a social promoter, as an inhibitor space, as a critical space, as a space of passage and as a space to play. The school studied has a small space that lacks materials directed to play, yet it happens anyway, children transform the elements that may serve for their entertainment and part of their games and their play. In conclusion, when the construction of school buildings for the fundamental education is thought of, the School of Nine Years (?), the inclusion of visual, tactile elements has also to be consider. As well as equipments to the optimization of children games and the children coexistence. Besides being partners within the school community, teachers and educational gestors should enable mutual learning about the relation between the school architecture with other playful and recreational activities in the elementary school. / Mestrado / Ciencias Sociais na Educação / Mestre em Educação

Rauber, Ana Carla Carvalho 19 December 2008 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The urban environment diagnosis aims at subsidizing the districts in the decisionmaking in the presence of natural resources preservation. This study, specifically, analyze the urban environment aspect of the physical space. The area of this study is the Map of the Geotechnical Engineering Units according to Maciel Filho (1990) of Santa Maria, located in the Central Depression of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The methodology of this research started with office studies by means of preexisting researchers; geoprocess tools application with the use of the software Spring 4.2 for the thematic maps and cartograms elaboration; identification and characterization of the geotechnical units carried out thereby laboratory assays and 20 assays of hydraulic conductivity (k) the field carried out using the method of excavated piezometer. The study of the aquifer natural vulnerability were accomplished based on GOD method according to Foster and Hirata (1988) and Foster et al. (2003) using data from 36 wells. The spacialization of the tubular wells and the hydraulic conductivity assays in the Map of the Geotechnical Engineering using the Universal Transverse Mercator/UTM coordinate system from Global Position System /GPS. The potentiometer surface was evaluated associated to the cartograms of vulnerability and the potential points of contamination by the use of SURFER 8.0 software adopting mathematical interpolator Kriging. The results shown that related to the characterization geotechnical coherent parameters with the descriptions of the study area and related to the assays of hydraulic conductivity in the field the range of variation was between 10-5 to 10-8 m/s, classifying the units since the high permeability (Gravitational and Fluvial Deposits, Caturrita, Botucatu and Passo das Tropas formations) to the low permeability (Santa Maria Formation, Alemoa Member). For the vulnerability natural index from the aquifers 4 classes were obtained (negligible, low, moderate and high). From all wells analyzed 11 were classified from moderate to high vulnerability situated in the south and north from each geotechnical units of Santa Maria. The results also shown that were identified 35 fuel ranks, 06 cemeteries and 06 areas of garbage deposits. The majority of the potential sources of contamination are prompt and are inserted in sufficiently susceptible areas of ground and the aquifers pollution. The methodology was viable and gave supply to the physical space research.

The Development of a Handbook for Teachers to Help Them Improve the Physical Environment of Their Classrooms

Steedley, Sharon C 01 January 1979 (has links)
Many educators argue that the environment to which a child is exposed every day of his school career can and will have a lasting effect on that child. The physical environment of a classroom setting encompasses many areas, according to this point of view. If this physical environment is inviting, colorful, and gives off a "positive" feeling, then the student will begin to develop more positive feelings toward school and, potentially, more positive attitudes about himself. In the teaching-learning setting, student and teacher attitude are assumed to work closely together. When both are pleased and happy with their own physical surroundings, it can be argued that they will be better adjusted mentally. With a better mental adjustment, the student will be able to have a better attitude about himself and his work, and thus will be more likely to prosper and succeed. Due to these physical surroundings, and better attitudes it is assumed that the teacher likewise will prosper and succeed. As educators we need to supply a physical environment that will produce all these conditions. Studies show that an environment that creates a stimulus for learning is possible in any classroom setting, either large or small. Basic changes can be made to improve the physical environment of any classroom which can turn a nonstimulating environment into one that is inviting and positive and can stimulate learning. Many teachers often do not know how to create a stimulating physical environment. Due to the lack of resources and materials and, most important, the lack of time and money, teachers feel as if they can not accomplish this task. Therefore, a guide will be designed to illustrate to teachers how an inviting, positive, environment can be formed within a typical classroom arrangement. With basic tools and supplies, instructions will be provided to teachers to help them design an environment that will stimulate their students and themselves.Specifically, a handbook, "Improving the Physical Environment of Your Classroom," will be designed for voluntary use by teachers in Clay County Elementary Schools with limited funding. This guide, which will focus on modification of wall furnishings, furniture, and floor coverings, will be used and tested mainly in open-concept classrooms, but may also be applicable in self contained classroom settings.

The role of IT and space in community driven Coworking Spaces

Porceddu, Enrico January 2021 (has links)
Coworking Spaces represent a global fast-growing trend which was able to gain momentum in research and academia, yet until now the fundamental role of IT within the coworking space ecosystem proves to be a rather unexplored topic for researchers and academia. Therefore, this research is about the role of space and information technologies (such as software, hardware, and more IT-related services) within CWSs; hence about the relation and interplay among those technologies, the involved actors and the physical environment in which the act of coworking takes place.

PATCHES OF LIGHT, A LUMINAIRE WITH USER ADJUSTABLE LIGHT DISTRIBUTION

Mojtahedi, Mahsa January 2021 (has links)
This Master’s thesis is to delineate a luminaire design which has a flexible functional form, can be controlled by the user, and which creates multidirectional light distribution within an indoor space.  A lighting solution with varied light distributions can change a space’s different spatial experiences, granting a flexibility which is controlled by the user to direct light rays into walls, floors, ceilings or to create variations of these. A flexible luminaire in terms of light distribution allows, vertical and horizontal surfaces to be valued equally, because through a minimal intervention it is possible to shift the focus from one surface to another, providing a holistic interplay in space. The participants, who took part in the evaluation program of the final luminaire, freely introduced their possible activities in the predefined dining room, with different lighting proposals according to personal preferences of spatial experience. The designed luminaire was the only accessible tool to influence the space, and they managed to achieve their ideal atmospheres, and experiences, by the process of adjusting the luminaire with controlled light distribution. The varied results of the patterns of brightness and darkness on the vertical and horizontal surfaces in the predefined real space, prove the flexibility of the final design of the luminaire, MM Lamp. The luminaire fulfills the predefined design objectives of being user adjustable as well as creating varied light distribution.

Securing wireless networks against eavesdropping using smart antennas

Lakshmanan, Sriram 29 October 2007 (has links)
In this work, we focus on securing communication over wireless data networks from malicious eavesdroppers, using smart antennas. While conventional cryptography based approaches focus on hiding the meaning of the information being communicated from the eavesdropper, we consider a complimentary class of strategies that limit knowledge of the existence of the information from the eavesdropper. We profile the performance achievable using simple beamforming strategies using a newly defined metric called exposure region. We then present three strategies within the context of an approach called 'virtual arrays of physical arrays' to significantly improve the exposure region performance of a wireless LAN environment. Using simulations, analysis, and field experiments, we validate and evaluate the proposed strategies.
