Logging impacts on catchment biogeochemistry: A review : with emphasis on northern boreal ecosystems

Karlsson, Daniel January 2014 (has links)
The impacts of current forest management methods on surface water quality, especially in northern parts of Sweden, are largely unexplored. In this review reports linked to logging impacts on catchment biogeochemistry, (with special emphasis on boreal ecosystems) has been assessed. Logging disturbances in boreal forest catchments can change biogeochemical processes in soils by alter transpiration, soil conditions, temperature, soil microbial activities and water fluxes. Combined these changes can cause increased soil nutrient leaching to receiving waters. In the studies reviewed, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and export generally increased after logging. Similar responses followed for phosphorous (P), but to a lesser extent for nitrogen (N). Streamflow and peakflow and the export of suspended matter (SM) can also be altered after logging. Removal of streamside vegetation may result in increased stream water temperatures and potentially affect lake water temperature, deepen the epilimnion and deplete oxygen (O2) concentrations. Increased wind exposure can resuspend sediments and potentially release bioavailable P. Affected lake water concentrations of N can be considered negligible after logging, whereas tot-P concentrations has shown to increase to an almost twofold level in some studies. The overall impact on the pelagic productivity are therefore most likely those connected to increased DOC and SM concentrations. The general impact on fish biomass can be considered insignificant. In conclusions, to improve future forest management and for further understanding concerning the biogeochemical environmental impacts that forestry might have on freshwaters, additional studies are still required.

The contribution of certain physical and motor ability parameters to the match performance of provincial academy cricket batsmen / Terence Nunes

Nunes, Terence January 2006 (has links)
Cricket has evolved from a traditional and conservative sport to a fast-paced, vigorous game. As a result of this the physical conditioning programmes of players have changed drastically with regular fitness tests that are now an integral part of these programmes. In spite of this, no studies have made an attempt to determine the exact relationship between the physical and motor ability parameters of batsmen and their performance. The purpose of this study was, therefore, firstly to determine which physical and motor ability parameters discriminate between successful and less successful provincial academy batsmen and secondly, to determine how much these parameters contribute to the batting performance of provincial academy batsmen. Twenty-two batsmen from the Gauteng and North-West cricket academies in South Africa were used in this study. Thirteen batsmen (20.15 +- 1.41 years) participated during the 2004 season whilst nine batsmen (21.11 +- 1.83 years) took part during the 2005 season. The players were subjected to 23 physical and motor ability tests, whilst 72 isokinetic measurements were also taken. The data was analysed by means of descriptive statistics, cluster analyses, forward stepwise discriminant analyses and finally forward stepwise multiple regression analyses. The discriminant analyses showed that right (RKEPT) and left knee extensor peak torque (LKEPT), right knee extensor average power (RKEAP), left knee extensor total work (LKETW) and left knee flexor peak torque (LKFPT) (all at 30°/sec), as well as LKEPT, RKEPT and L.KEAP (all at 24O°/sec ), left (LIRAP) and right shoulder internal rotator average power (RIRAP). right shoulder external/internal rotator peak torque ratio (REIRPTR) and right shoulder internal rotator peak torque (RIRPTJ (all at 24O°/sec) as well as left shoulder internal rotator total work (LIRTW) (60°/sec) discriminated non-significantly between the successfu1 (top 5 ranked batsmen of both seasons) and less successful academy batsmen. The physical and motor ability parameters which were identified as discriminators were left 505 agility, shuttle run aerobic endurance and IRM (repetition-maximum) hack squat strength (all significant) (p 5<= 0.05) whilst left grip strength and abdominal muscle strength discriminated non-significantly. The forward stepwise multiple regression analyses indicated that RKEPT 30' (16%). LKEPT 30' (7%), RKEAP 30' (7%), LKFPT 30' (7%), LKEAP 240" (6%), RKFPT 240" (5%). LKETW 30" (5%) and LKEPT240° (4%) were the isokinetic knee strength parameters which contributed non-significantly to batting performance. The isokinetic shoulder strength parameters which also contributed non-significantly to batting performance were: RIRPT240° (28%). LIRAP 240' (16%), REZRPTR 240' (8%). LIRTW 60° (5%) and RIRAP 240' (4%). Vertical jumping power (13%) (p 50.05), left 505 agility (9%) (p 50.05), abdominal muscle strength (5%) (p 50.05), aerobic capacity (10%). IRM bench press strength (7%), IRM hack squat strength as well as left shoulder internal rotation flexibility (4% each) were the physical and motor ability parameters which contributed to batting performance. The conclusion that can, therefore, be drawn is that physical and motor ability parameters contribute to the performance of provincial academy batsmen and that these components should be included in the physical conditioning programmes of batsmen / Thesis (M.Sc. The properties of barred disks in the field and dense environments : implications for galaxy evolution

Marinova, Irina Stoilova 18 October 2011 (has links)
Stellar bars are the most important internal drivers of the evolution of disk galaxies because they efficiently redistribute mass and angular momentum in the baryonic and dark matter components of galaxies. Mounting evidence suggests that mechanisms other than major mergers of galaxies, such as minor mergers, gas accretion, and bar-driven secular processes, play an important role in galaxy evolution since a redshift z~2. In order to characterize the evolution of barred disks, this thesis presents one of the most comprehensive studies of barred galaxies in the field at low redshifts, and also as a function of environment across galaxy clusters of different densities. This work improves significantly on earlier studies by using quantitative methods to characterize bars, analyzing high-quality data from some of the largest disk galaxy samples to date, and using results across a range of Hubble types and environments to test different theoretical models for the evolution of disk galaxies. Our main results are summarized below: (1) Studies done as a part of this thesis have quantitatively shown for the first time that the optical bar fraction in z~ 0 field galaxies is a sensitive and non-monotonic function of host galaxy properties, such as the luminosity, stellar mass, and bulge-to-disk ratio. We find that at z~0, the bar fraction increases significantly from galaxies of intermediate mass and Hubble types (Sb) toward those of lower mass and late Hubble types (Sd-Sm). The behavior from intermediate to early Hubble types is more uncertain. These results, which have been subsequently confirmed by independent studies, set constraints for theoretical models and in particular underline the importance for bar growth of angular momentum exchange between the bar, disk, bulge, and dark matter halo, as well as the possible triggering of bars by external satellites and interactions with the dark matter. Furthermore, our results at optical and near-infrared wavelengths on the fraction and sizes of bars at z~0 provide the zero-redshift anchor point for studies of bars at higher redshifts with current and future space missions (e.g., ACS, WFC3, JWST), and allow us to assess the systematic effects in such studies. (2) Although cluster environments are unique laboratories for investigating the evolution of barred disks, only sparse and disparate results have emerged from early studies. In this thesis, we study barred disks in clusters using high-quality data from the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys for the moderately-rich cluster Abell 901/902 (characterized by a galaxy number density n~1,000 gal Mpc⁻³) at z~0.165, and of the Coma cluster at z~0.02, the densest cluster (n~10,000 gal Mpc⁻³) in the nearby Universe. We find that the optical bar fraction for bright, early Hubble type disk galaxies does not show a statistically significant variation (within the error bars of ± 10 to 12%) as a function of galaxy environment within the Abell 901/902 cluster, as well as between the Abell 901/902 cluster and the field. Similarly, the optical bar fraction for bright S0 galaxies shows no statistically significant variation (within the error bars of ±10%) between the Virgo, Abell 901/902, and core of the Coma clusters, even though these environments span over an order of magnitude in galaxy number density (n~300 to 10,000 gal Mpc⁻³). We suggest that the S0 bar fraction is not greatly enhanced in denser environments, such as the core of Coma, due to the predominance of high speed encounters over slow ones, the tidal heating of S0 disks, and the low gas content of S0s in rich clusters. / text

Geo-physical parameter forecasting on imagery{based data sets using machine learning techniques

Hussein, Eslam January 2021 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / This research objectively investigates the e ectiveness of machine learning (ML) tools towards predicting several geo-physical parameters. This is based on a large number of studies that have reported high levels of prediction success using ML in the eld. Therefore, several widely used ML tools coupled with a number of di erent feature sets are used to predict six geophysical parameters namely rainfall, groundwater, evapora- tion, humidity, temperature, and wind. The results of the research indicate that: a) a large number of related studies in the eld are prone to speci c pitfalls that lead to over-estimated results in favour of ML tools; b) the use of gaussian mixture models as global features can provide a higher accuracy compared to other local feature sets; c) ML never outperform simple statistically-based estimators on highly-seasonal parame- ters, and providing error bars is key to objectively evaluating the relative performance of the ML tools used; and d) ML tools can be e ective for parameters that are slow- changing such as groundwater.

In-Situ Remediation of Small Leaks in Water Pipes: Impacts of Water Chemistry, Physical Parameters and the Presence of Particles

Tang, Min 02 March 2017 (has links)
Aging and leaking water infrastructure wastes water resources and creates public health risks. Upgrading of potable water systems represents a large financial burden for water utilities and private property owners. The conventional approaches of repair, rehabilitation and replacement are very effective, but will take decades to implement even if a financial commitment to do so was made immediately. A novel approach of in-situ remediation of leaks, achieved by harnessing the ability of water or pipe to repair leaks via clogging, could potentially reduce leak rates and extend the lifetime of existing infrastructure at relatively low cost and inconvenience. Physical clogging, precipitation and metallic corrosion were identified as major mechanisms of in-situ leak remediation in potable water pipelines. Autogenous repair (i.e., self-repair without added particles) of small leak-holes (150–"1000 μm) in copper and iron was validated in the laboratory at water pHs of 3.0–11.0, operating water pressures of 20–60 psi, upward and downward leak orientations, and for a range of water chemistries. In bench scale experiments, the time to repair of iron pipe leaks increased with leak size to the power of 0.89–1.89, and decreased with pipe wall thickness to the power of -1.9 to -1.0. The time to repair of copper pipe leaks increased with water pressure to the power of 1.7. Additionally, the waters with a higher DO and corrosivity as measured by RSI, significantly decreased the time to repair of carbon steel 400 μm leaks by 50–70%. The presence of chlorine dioxide significantly increased the fraction of repaired 200 μm copper pipe leaks by 3 times when compared to the control without any disinfectant. In the building scale study, the fraction of repaired iron pipe leaks decreased with the logarithmic leak size with a slope of -0.65 after one-year duration of experiments, while leak orientation and water pressure were not influential in time to or likelihood of repair for iron pipe leaks. Addition of calcium carbonate particles (~8.8 μ]m), silica particles (~29 μm) and wood ash particles (~160 μm) in Blacksburg, VA tap water at a water pressure of 10 psi increased the fraction of remediated iron pipe leaks of 280–1000 μm diameter sizes. Although the control condition with no added particles for 58 days resulted in remediation of 0/12 leaks, remediation rate increased to 1/12 with calcium carbonate particles, to 10/12 with silica particles and to 10/12 with wood ash particles. Leak size and particle size played an important role in controlling the remediation success rate. The strength of the in-situ leak repair was sometimes very strong and resilient. The sealing materials of leak-holes repaired at 20–60 psi could sometimes withstand a 100 psi water pressure without failure, demonstrating the potential of the approach to sustain aging and leaking infrastructure. In-situ leak repair can also occur naturally, and the success rate might be unintentionally altered by adjustment of chemistry or treatments that decrease or increase particulates. / Ph. D.

Auswirkungen des Cellvas-Mikrostromverfahrens auf die Leistungsfähigkeit bei Sportlern : Analyse möglicher Effekte auf ausgewählte psycho-physische Belastungsparameter im Leistungssport / Cellvas effects of micro current system to the performance of athletes : analysis of possible effects on selected psycho-physical stress parameters in competitive

Gutschow, Ivonne January 2009 (has links)
High performance requirements in competitive sports require the athlete a high level of aerobic fitness. The training opportunities and scopes intensities increase, are z.T. exhausted. To persist The attempt to find new ways to potential performance reserves additional market opportunities. Electrotherapy procedures have been in clinical practice, including to treatment of trauma, and are often proved for the purpose of analgesia, improvement of tissue perfusion and muscle stimulation applied. Their use in the field of adjuvant training support has so far been described only sporadically. In the present study, the effects were a electromagnetic application form on selected psycho-physical parameters examined (control group compared with placebo-controlled design) to statements about practical approaches to derive training support care. It turned the whether an intervention (15 x / 4 wk) with frequency currents in predominantly low-spectrum (0-10000Hz, 5 uA / cm ², CellVAS ®) to influence the parameters investigated, and so lead sustainable performance-enhancing or-reducing effects could be achieved. It should also be examined to what extent the parameters collected (PWC170, squat-jump, lateral flexion of the spine and SF36 ®) meaningful enough. The effectiveness of the application form was in the pre-post comparison before (T1), after (T2) and 4 wk) after (T3, sustainability of intervention analysis. The participants in the control group received similar applications in the placebo mode. The group consisted of healthy volunteers, athletes, whose endurance sports a high proportion of included (n = 127). Kan fälttester indikera fysisk prestation under match? : En korrelationsstudie utförd på manliga elitfotbollsspelare i Sverige / Can field tests indicate physical performance during match? : A correlation study accomplished on male elite soccer players in Sweden

Ekholm, Edwin, Niman, Rudolf January 2018 (has links)
There is an inadequate amount of studies which have examined Change Of Direction Speed test (CODS) and Repeated Sprint Ability test (RSA) possibility to indicate match-related physical performance, measured with GPS-system. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between two field test, 20 meter Repeated Sprint Ability (RSA20), Modified-Change of Direction Speed test (M-CODS) and match related physical performance: average distance (MD), acceleration (ACC), deceleration (DEC), high intensity running (HL), very high intensity running (VHL), sprints and peak velocity (MH) during games recorded with GPS system (S5, 100Hz, MinimaxX, CatapultsSports, Australia). During the pre-season, ten Swedish male elite soccer players (25.5±2.1 y/o, 78.8±3.6 kg,181.34±.9 cm), completed the two field tests. The results of the two test were later compared and related to in-game physical match performance. This study found moderate significant relationships between best time on RSA20 (RSA20best) and acceleration added with deceleration (ACC+DEC) (r=-0.643) and sprints (r=-0.638). The conclusion of this study was that these analyzed field tests should not be used with the intention to indicate physical match related physical performance, due to the major influence of internal and external factors during gameplay.

Vidal, Ruth Maria Bonfim January 2004 (has links)
The object of this work is to supply hidrologicals datas with ends of monitoramento of the area of the North Chain of Brazil and of the Chain of Fernando of Noronha, as well as to lift and to systematize information on the geochesmitry of the several types of sediments found in the external continental platform adjacent to the bank Aracati, contributing to the rising of the maintainable potentials of exploration of the alive resources of the Exclusive Economic Zone. The area in study understands the subarea II, section 1 and it leaves of the section 2, and it is located among 1oN and 5oS of latitude and among 30o and 40oW of longitude, embracing an area of approximately 400.000 km2. Samples collected in 8 stations resulting in 20 samples of sediments in the years of 1997 were analyzed (summer), 1998 (autumn) and 2000 (spring) and 34 stations that originated 272 samples of water in the spring of 2000. The maximum concentrations of the analyzed parameters, except for the phosphate, in the samples of water are located in the close area to the coast. It was detected in the area a very marked termocline, being deeper in the spring. The mixture layer is quite homogeneous, being even so, more it thickens in the spring. The detected pH meets in the alkaline strip being the largest pH values detected in the spring. It is verified, a maximum of salinity in the layer of I begin of the seasonal termoclina. It was not verified in the area anaerobic condition in the column of water. The distribution of phosphate, nitrate and silicate, come in a very similar way, and in the spring those concentrations are larger, in the superficial layers. In the sedimentary covering of the continental platform adjacent to the banks of the north chain of Brazil, find quartz sands, it sands carbonate, shell fragments, Lithothanmium and Halimedas. The shell fragments presented the largest total concentrations of metals, while Lithothanmium presented the largest text of carbonate. There is a strong correlation between iron and manganese in to samples of water and in all the analyzed fractions of sediments, and in these the medium relationship among these elements is of the order of 1:25. strong correlation Exists between chromium and carbonate in the samples that present text of larger carbonate than 20%. The samples of quartz sand, shell fragments and Halimedas, come very similar with relationship to the distribution of iron, manganese, zinc and chromium. Strong correlation exists in the sediment samples, as well as in the samples of water, among iron, manganese, zinc, being also correlated in the sediment samples with the lead. The concentrations 10 of metals in the samples of water came relatively low in if comparing with the sediment samples. In the samples of water the concentrations of chromium and lead are below the detection limit.
