Helfenstein, Denise Valéria January 2010 (has links)
The present research, entitled Capture of the landscape: between photographic apprehensions through camera obscura and sonorous records, analyzes the procedures for the instauration of the work Capture of the Landscape, including questions emerging from the practice with camera obscura photography. In this context, the conceptual and theoretical relationships involved in the actions of time-space apprehension and recording that occur in this production are investigated. They involve photographic attainments of long duration as well as the simultaneous recording of sonorous registries. In addition, this research deals with the questions involved in the possibilities of junction of such elements within the presentation propositions of this work.

Water erosion on soil slopes and a suggested method for assessing susceptibility of mine tailings to water erosion

Muasi, Vhonani Shadrack 14 November 2006 (has links)
Student Number : 0418755N - MSc (Eng) dissertation - School of Civil and Environmental Engineering - Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment / Environmental impacts from tailings impoundments differ according to their mineral constituents. Erosion is one of the processes that aggravate the environmental impacts from tailings due to the transportation of particles, and knowing the susceptibility mechanisms of those tailings particles for erosion will provide understanding of how to prevent impacts arising from erosion. Laboratory pinhole erosion tests were used to determine the susceptibility of tailings particles to erosion. Compacted tailings samples were used, as compaction is an important parameter of erosion susceptibility. The study entails investigation of factors that affect erosion from the slopes of tailings deposits in order to evaluate mitigation measures. The results could help to provide more effective methods to reduce gully formation and enhance environmental protection. It is advisable to prevent environmental impacts at the source, before they become detrimental and costly to mitigate.

An Autoethnographic Study of the Effectiveness of Teaching Art Appreciation through Pinhole Photography to Home Schooled Students

Church, Elizabeth Ann 06 August 2007 (has links)
This research studies the effectiveness of teaching art appreciation to home schooled children ages 10-17 through a DBAE curriculum in pinhole photography via a weekend workshop. An autoethnographic approach to recording data about the students’ learning and my experience as their teacher was used in the research. Data was recorded as journal notes during and after each workshop from my experiences as their teacher and analyzed according to a grounded theory based on open coding. The workshop was open for registration of up to 25 home schooled students of any race, male or female, from the ages of 10 - 17. While the research reports a successful change in students’ appreciation of photography as a result of the workshop, parental values proved to be both an obstacle and area of potential future research.

Dynamic Myocardial SPECT Imaging Using Single-Pinhole Collimator Detectors: Distance-Driven Forward and Back-Projection, and KDE-Based Image Reconstruction Methods

Ihsani, Alvin January 2015 (has links)
SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) is the modality of choice for myocardial perfusion imaging due to the high sensitivity and specificity, and the lower cost of equipment and radiotracers compared to PET. Dynamic SPECT imaging provides new possibilities for myocardial perfusion imaging by encoding more information in the reconstructed images in the form of time-activity functions. The recent introduction of small solid-state SPECT cameras using multiple pinhole collimators, such as the GE Discovery NM 530c, offers the ability to obtain accurate myocardial perfusion information with markedly decreased acquisition times and offers the possibility to obtain quantitative dynamic perfusion information. This research targets two aspects of dynamic SPECT imaging with the intent of contributing to the improvement of projection and reconstruction methods. First, we propose an adaptation of distance-driven projection to SPECT imaging systems using single-pinhole collimator detectors. The proposed distance-driven projection approach accounts for the finite size of the pinhole, the possibly coarse discretization of the detector and object spaces, and the tilt of the detector surface. We evaluate the projection method in terms of resolution and signal to noise ratio (SNR). We also propose two maximum a posteriori (MAP) iterative image reconstruction methods employing kernel density estimators. The proposed reconstruction methods cluster time-activity functions (or intensity values) by their spatial proximity and similarity, each of which is determined by spatial and range scaling parameters respectively. The results of our experiments support our belief that the proposed reconstruction methods are especially effective when performing reconstructions from low-count measurements. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Investigation of spatial filtering for planar range-resolved pulsed laser ablated plume imaging

Winslow, James F. 01 January 2004 (has links)
This thesis presents a study of the intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) imaging of pulsed laser ablated plumes. Two-dimensional imaging of laser ablated plumes is a very important diagnostic for PLD. ICCD array photography is a useful tool for imaging PLD. The images obtained using the standard technique are characterized and compared with ICCD images of an altered plume, ICCD images intentionally violating standard imaging procedures, and film thickness. The depth resolving properties of a pinhole was investigated with the intention of applying it to PLD plume imaging. This results in a more thorough understanding of the depth resolving property of a pinhole. The investigation leads to a theoretical improvement for the resolution in confocal microscopy.

PERFORMANCE OF PAN-TILT TRACKER BASED ON THE PIN-HOLE LENS MODEL

Mehta, Vikas Chandra 01 January 2009 (has links)
In the modern day, recognition and tracking of face or the iris is potentially one of the most powerful ways of differentiating between an authentic person and an imposter. Our method uses stereo vision to track the 3-Dimensional coordinates of a target equivalent to a person’s eyes and using a pan-tilt unit we target these areas for additional processing such as iris or facial imaging. One of the most important parts involved in tracking is the way the pan-tilt unit is calibrated. There have been techniques in the past where PTZ (Pan-tilt-zoom) digital camera has been used and calibrated using self calibration techniques involving a checker board calibration grid but the tracking error was found to be large in these techniques. We introduce a more accurate form of calibration of the pantilt unit using photogrammetric calibration technique and view the pan-tilt unit as an emulation of a Pinhole Lens Model to detect and track the target. The system is demonstrated on ideal targets.

The nature of collections : a photographic exploration of collected materials & the photographic exhibition "Herbarium imaginaire".

Hawkins, Susan 28 April 2009 (has links)
Curiosity, it can be said, alerts us to the interface between art and science, with the ‘object’ being suspended somewhere between the two. Curiosity interfaced with photography and collections are the main components of this thesis. This thesis is organized around two principle outcomes: a written component and an artistic component. The written component investigates how the use of photography as a method of inquiry into the secondary manipulation of ready-made material results in objects that become sites of new meaning and encourage new interpretations. The artistic component was comprised of a photographic installation titled ‘herbarium imaginaire’ (imaginary herbarium), which featured hand-built pinhole cameras and auxiliary photography equipment used in the production of a photographs, as well as featuring an open-house and presentation of botanical specimens and plant collecting processes that was held in the University of Victoria Herbarium.
