Disruption in place attachment: Insights of young Aboriginal adults on the social and cultural impacts of industrial development in northern AlbertaSpyce, Tera 11 1900 (has links)
People living in the north have been and will continue to be affected by increasing exploration and exploitation of the region's natural resources. To understand the human impacts a qualitative approach and sense of place, place attachment, and disruption in place theories were used to analyze the experiences of young Aboriginal adults in a Dene Tha' community in northwestern Alberta. The major finding of this study was that the young people developed deep attachments to their place; however, environmental, social, and cultural changes have altered life here and as a consequence many of the young people no longer want to remain living in their community. The results suggest that the Dene Tha' are being gradually displaced and their homeland is becoming increasingly unable to sustain them or their culture. The findings also indicate that gradual environmental deterioration can lead to profound social and cultural changes that should be considered before land use decisions are made. / Rural Sociology

Home, neighborhood, and renewal: resident perceptions of forced relocationWilcox, F. Rowan January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Geography / Max Lu / Given the ongoing incidence of housing displacement related to the commercial redevelopment of neighborhoods, and its implications for the health and quality of life of affected households and communities, there is a need for insight into what factors influence the quality of a move and movers' chances of successful post-move adjustment. In this study, qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with 26 men and women representing 18 households from three redeveloped eastern Kansas neighborhoods was employed to examine residents' experiences of displacement. Five factors were examined: attachment to home and neighborhood, community social ties, relative sense of control and mastery over the circumstances of relocation, opinions of the amount of monetary compensation or relocation assistance received, and support for a redevelopment project.
The results show that attachment to home influenced feelings about having to move, although it did not preclude contentment with a post-move dwelling. Attachment to neighborhood had both social and environmental components. Neighborhood social ties were difficult to replicate for many residents in their post-move neighborhoods. Perceptions of control over the circumstances of a move were negatively affected by problems with communication and information-sharing between residents and relocation authorities, causing stress and difficulties finding replacement housing. Satisfaction with compensation was tied to perceptions of upward housing mobility, while dissatisfaction was influenced by perceptions of having been a victim of official graft. Expressed support for redevelopment projects was in the main grudging, and support for a project did not appear to greatly influence a positive disposition toward moving.
Experiences connected with displacement are not monolithic, and neither are its outcomes. Householders forced to move may concede that relocation has had at once negative repercussions and benefits. Having achieved upward housing mobility or experienced improved quality of life subsequent to moving did not eradicate residents' wish to have been 'treated better,' monetarily or otherwise, by relocation officials. This oft-expressed desire calls attention to the need for greater awareness of, and sensitivity to, the nature of residential place attachment and the special problems of those forced to move.

Motivace účastníků zimního cestovního ruchu / Motivation of winter tourism participantsLněnička, Marek January 2015 (has links)
It is possible to observe certain stagnation of the winter tourism which is linked with winter sports. The overall number of participants is not growing any more, however, new ski resorts are being set up and the competition is continuously rising. In order to stay competitive, it is necessary to take into account reasons which leads to the final decision of a tourist to choose certain ski resort. This thesis concentrates on the concepts that influence the process of choosing the destinationThese concepts, which are based on foreign literature are following: destination image, place attachment, loyalty. During the winter season of 2015 there was also a research conducted at the recently developing destination Lipno nad Vltavou, which was based on observations and interviews with the visitors. The above mentioned concepts were applied here. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Place des risques côtiers dans la représentation du cadre de vie d'individus possédant des enjeux sur des communes "à risque" / Place of the coastal risks in living area representation by people with stakes on "at risk" municipalitiesKrien, Nathalie 05 December 2014 (has links)
During the 20th century, new stakes appeared on coastal areas. Moreover in february 2010, the devastation caused by the storm Xynthia has effected a strengthening of coastal risk management policies. The workload of local managers has evolved consequently. Now they have to integrate risks management into daily operations. This implies an interest in populations. Most especially on representations of their environment and translation of coastal risks. Our survey is studying representation of environment from people who live on coastal areas. Most especially the place of coastal risks in those representation. Our starting point is that the représentation of coastal risks belongs to specific environmental and social factors. With this in mind, we made assumptions which have been subjected to several qualitative surveys and a questionnaire. Those analyses confirmed that representation of coastal risks depend from the way in which they grasp and use their environment. Most espacially it depend from spatio-temporal, social and attitudinal dimension of the at risk area.

Previous issue date: 2011-04-19 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / Place Attachment is a positive affective bond between people and environments, and its
main characteristic is the desire to maintain closeness to the place of attachment.
Neighborhoods, in turn, are spaces close to the dwelling, which varies according to
environmental, social and cultural characteristics. Facing the contemporary scenario of
diminishment of neighborhood relations and its importance to the understanding of
cities social-environmental context, the present work aimed to investigate the
attachment to neighborhoods at the city of Natal-RN. This study had two stages. The
first stage consisted on investigating, through an experts panel, the main characteristics
of attached neighborhoods, aspects that contributes to the development of these
neighborhoods, the ones that difficult, as well as look for indications of neighborhoods
at the city of Natal that may be identified by these elements. In the following stage I
interviewed 11 residents of two indicated neighborhoods at the district of Alecrim, to
better comprehend the main characteristics of this attachment and the elements of the
context that enable its development. The content of the interviews, categorized and
evaluated by judges, indicated that, due to the 10 participant experts, the main
characteristics of attached neighborhoods encompass elements of socialization,
cooperation, physical space usage, intimacy and identity. According to them, these are
characteristics enabled by temporal and rootedness aspects, by spatial contact,
familiarity between neighbors, and cultural inheritance. The interviews with residents
showed that attachment to the studied neighborhoods is specially grounded on support
and cooperation networks between neighbors, on satisfaction with the proximity of
services, and on the bond to symbolic aspects and local traditions. In addition to be
enabled by spatial organization, by low displacement of residents, and by the district s
history, relations at these neighborhoods are fostered by an intention to establish this
As
caracter?sticas ambientais, sociais e culturais.
duas etapas.
esses elementos.
espa?o f?sico, intimidade e identidade.

Sense of Place Evoked by Interactive MapsGo, Hanyoung 2012 May 1900 (has links)
Maps are essential tools for providing tourism information. Hence, it is imperative for tourism marketers to understand how tourists perceive spatial information and sense physical places virtually presented in digital maps. Based on sense of place, spatial cognition, and virtual reality literature, this study constructed a conceptual framework to measure how different interactivity levels of a digital map interface affect potential tourists' experience when exploring maps. In addition, the study explored how individual characteristics such as place attachment and spatial ability affect virtual-spatial experiences. An experiment was conducted to test the developed Virtual Spatial Experience model. Google Earth maps were manipulated using two experimental conditions: low level (satellite view map only) vs. high level (three dimensional (3D) dynamic objects). The questionnaire included self-report items regarding perceived map interactivity, spatial ability, affective place attachment, spatial orientation, spatial imagery, and spatial presence. Responses from 211 students were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM).
The study results showed that map interfaces influence human perceptions of map interactivity. Perceived map interactivity positively affected virtual spatial experiences: spatial orientation, spatial imagery and spatial presence. Spatial ability positively influenced spatial orientation which in turn led to greater spatial imagery and ultimately greater spatial presence. The results further demonstrated that affective place attachment positively influenced spatial presence.
The findings provided evidence that sense of place in the real world, such as affective place attachment to the experimental setting (Walt Disney World, Florida), influences spatial experiences of an environment virtually presented in the map. Therefore, by applying place attachment to virtual environment studies, this study expanded the scope of theories used in exploring human spatial experience. Moreover, evaluating the influence of map interactivity, this study provided practical implications for designing destination maps. By applying 3D dynamic objects as a design feature in an interactive map, tourism marketers can produce enhanced virtual spatial experiences. As this study used Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom Park presented on Google Earth as the experimental setting, the collected data also informs the understanding of virtual experiences and perceptions of the park.

Racial Disparity in Social Spatiality: Usage of National Parks and Opera AttendanceJohnson, Joseph Terry 12 June 2006 (has links)
This study investigates the existence of an ethnic separation in different settings of leisure activities. I examine the relationship between race, gender, socioeconomic status, and education with respect to the usage of popular cultural activities and high cultural activities to demonstrate the racial disparity occurring in both. A literature review pertaining to the usage of outdoor recreation, as in camping and hiking evidences the influence of racism on the disparity in Non-white participation. In contrast to out-door leisure activities, literature evidences the influence of class instead of race for the disparity in indoor leisure activities. Using the 1993 General Social Survey (GSS), I am able to arrive at the conclusion that the type of leisure chosen by an ethnic group relates much less to the educational level, economic status or the place of residence as it does to the perception of the socially constructed settings.

Interior design for travelling dance professionals: a short term residence and performance spaceShapera, Tali 17 December 2012 (has links)
Several dancers travel to different cities as their careers performing ballets for audiences nationally and internationally. However, their constant travelling does not allow the dancers to gain a sense of place or form a connection with the cities they visit. The objective of this practicum project is to address this issue by producing an ideal environment that is designed for the dancers needs. This will be achieved by analyzing the role of interior design by proposing a Short Term Residence for Travelling Dance Professionals visiting the city of Winnipeg. The design project is a new typology where dancers coming to Winnipeg have the opportunity to stay in one location that will provide housing, dance rehearsal space, and most importantly an opportunity for collaboration and creative synergy to occur. The theories I will investigate are, the Significance of Place and Community, Collaborative Social Environments, and Performance and the Body in Space.
