Comparison of the performance of two atmospheric dispersion models (AERMOD and ADMS) for open pit mining sources of air pollutionNeshuku, Martha Nyambali 25 June 2012 (has links)
The performance of the AERMOD and ADMS dispersion models was tested using PM10 (thoracic dust) emissions from Rössing Uranium Mine open pit in Namibia. The performance of the two models was evaluated against the observations and also against each other using various statistical measures. The models were tested under different case scenarios (cases explained in chapter 4) with the aim of evaluating their performances as well as their inter model variability. The study was undertaken from the 13 July 2009 – 14 August 2009. The results from the study showed that the performance of ADMS was superior to that of AERMOD. In general, the performance of AERMOD was very poor and simulated extremely high concentration values. AERMOD performed even more poorly during calm conditions. ADMS performance was superior to AERMOD as was evident from the values of various performance statistical measures and a conclusion reached was that ADMS is likely to be a better model to use in cases where prolonged calm conditions are experienced. Analysis of contributions to the PM10 concentration in a gold mine residential villageRamsuchit, Dhunraj January 2013 (has links)
Main findings
Although the data did not allow the inclusion of non-identified or “unknown” sources,
allocation of the impact at the receptor point to the identified sources proved possible
and useful in comparing individual tailings dams contributions. The No. 4 tailings dam
has been identified as one of the major contributors to PM10 concentration at West
Village. The average PM10 gravimetric concentration recorded at West Village was 18.4
μg/m3 and the concentration with the light scatter method was 15.4 μg/m3. Black carbon
has been identified as significant contributor to overall PM10 mass concentrations with
up to 34% in the winter season. Source appointment from receptor-based measurements has not been previously
conducted at Driefontein Gold Mine. Source apportionment can make a valuable
contribution in attempts to reduce air pollution. At a site where particulate matter is the
predominant pollutant from a variety of potential sources, the contributions from the
individual sources may be difficult to distinguish especially if the sources fall within a
single category type with similar pollutant profiles. It would be useful to ascertain the
individual contributions so that the effectiveness of existing control measures can be
determined and areas where additional controls may be required can be identified. Too
this effect, potential dust sources at and around a gold mine were identified. Samples of
the dust sources were collected and analysed for their elemental compositions and
abundances. A receptor point in a mine village was selected and equipped with an ESampler
PM10 dust monitor as well as an aethalometer, the MicroAeth AE51
(MicroAeth). Monthly receptor samples were collected and analysed for their elemental
concentrations. The elemental compositions of the potential sources and the
concentrations at the receptor were statistically analysed for 12 periods of a month each
to determine the possible contributions to the PM10 concentration at a mine village
(West Village, Driefontein Mine, near Carletonville). Main conclusions
Operational tailings dams can under, certain conditions contribute the major portion of

Oil-related Particle Emissions from Diesel EnginesJohansson, Petter January 2008 (has links)
In recent decades much effort has gone into reducing particle emissions in the exhaust gases of heavy-duty diesel engines. Engine development has now reached the stage where it is worth to put heavy focus on the contribution of lubricating oil to particulate emissions in order to further reduce these emissions. A literature study demonstrates that the cylinder system is usually the largest source of oil-related particles. Oil consumption in the cylinder can be divided into throw-off effects when inertia forces act on the piston, piston rings and oil; evaporation from hot surfaces; reverse blow-by when gas pressure drives the oil consumption; and top land scraping when oil is scraped off the cylinder liner. The pressure between the compression rings strongly affects the stability and position of the upper compression ring as well as the oil consumption caused by the reverse blow-by. A method to measure the inter-ring pressure was developed and evaluated. The measurements showed that cycle-to-cycle variations were small, but that the inter-ring pressure varied over time. Calculations with AVL Excite Piston and Rings confirmed that ring gap positions can have a major influence on the inter-ring pressure. The measured particle size and number distributions at motoring conditions show interesting and unexpected results. The high number of particles with a diameter of around 100 nm was greatly reduced when the temperature in the diluter was increased. The mean number particle diameter decreased until 10 nm and then became stable independent of further temperature increase. Other authors have found that the small particles (nucleation mode) are reduced and the larger particles (accumulation mode) are more or less unaffected when exhaust gases are heated up and diluted. / QC 20101112

Bakgrund och problem: I dagens globaliserade och snabbt rörande samhälle är ett tätt samarbete mellan företag och deras leverantör viktig för att fortsätta vara konkurrenskraftig. För att vara det är leveransprecisionen ett viktigt effektivitetsmått. För tillverkande företag som tillverkar mot order är det extra viktigt att effektivt kunna identifiera de artiklar som anses mest kritiska. Denna studie har behandlat identifiering av kritiska artiklar genom en integrerad klassificeringsmetod och även hur väl integrerad PM-processen är i ett kund- och leverantörsförhållande. Samtidigt behöver inte en integration innebära en hög integration därför är det viktigt att det finns förbättringsåtgärder att applicera. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka hur ett tillverkande företag, genom integrering av flera klassificeringsmetoder, kunnat identifiera sina mest kritiska artiklar. Studien behandlade samtidigt hur PM-processen kunde tillämpas samt hur väl integrerad denna var för studiens fallföretag IV produkt i ett av deras kund- och leverantörsförhållande. Detta med avseende på leveransprecision. Slutligen behandlade denna studie även de diverse förbättringsåtgärder som IV Produkt kan vidta för att förbättra en eventuellt låg integration av PM-processen. Även denna del sett till ett av deras kund- och leverantörsförhållanden och hur dessa förbättringsåtgärder därmed kan förbättra leveransprecisionen. Metod: En till stor del kvalitativ studie, med inslag av en kvantitativ studiedesign. Insamling av sekundärdata, i form av att skribenterna har analyserat litterära källor och vetenskapliga artiklar, bidrog till konstruerandet av de teoretiska referensramarna. Samtliga empiriska data har samlats in genom ostrukturerade och semi-strukturerade intervjuer och observationer hos studiens fallföretag samt hos en av företagets leverantörer. Slutsats: För den första frågeställningen har en integrerad metod av klassificeringsmetoderna ABC, XYZ, integrerad ABC/XYZ och Kraljic sammanställts för att ett tillverkande företag ska kunna identifiera de mest kritiska artiklarna. Den andra frågeställning kom fram till att det var framförallt två aktiviteter mellan IV Produkt och Leverantör 3 som hade en låg nivå av integration i PM-processen. Den tredje och sista frågeställningen kom fram till förbättringsåtgärder gällande en låg integration av PM-processen, dessa åtgärder involverade tillit, synlighet och prognoser.

Health impact of airborne particulate matter in Northern Lebanon : from a pilot epidemiological study to physico-chemical characterization and toxicological effects assessment / Impact sur la santé des particules atmosphériques au Nord Liban : enquête épidémiologique, caractérisation physico-chimique et étude des effets toxicologiquesMelki, Pamela 02 March 2017 (has links)
L'exposition à la pollution atmosphérique, notamment aux particules fines (PM₂.₅), représente un risque majeur pour la santé dans le monde entier, et d'autant plus dans les pays en développement.Le Nord du Liban est ainsi affecté par plusieurs sources de pollution d'origine anthropique, urbaine et industrielle. Pourtant, dans cette région, aucune étude ne s'est intéressée à l'impact des PM₂.₅ sur la santé publique. Il faut également souligner que les mécanismes de toxicité des PM₂.₅ ne sont pas totalement identifiés. Le but de ce travail est d'étudier la nature et l'impact sanitaire de la pollution atmosphérique particulaire dans le Nord du Liban. Nous avons procédé à une enquête épidémiologique, et prélevé des particules fines que nous avons caractérisées sur les plans physico-chimiques et toxicologiques. Deux régions ont été considérées dont une est située à proximité d'activités industrielles. L'étude épidémiologique et de perception menée dans les deux zones du Nord du Liban (310 questionnaires/zone traitée), a montré une relation entre gêne, maladies respiratoires et proximité des industries. Cette enquête a ainsi confirmé l'intérêt de mener une étude toxicologique dans cette région. Afin de renforcer les connaissances sur la toxicité pulmonaire des aérosols atmosphériques particulaires avec une attention toute particulière portée à l'étude de certains des mécanismes d'action suspectés d'être impliqués dans la cancérogénécité, les caractéristiques physico-chimiques et toxicologiques des particules fines (PM₂.₅₋₀.₃) prélevées sur les deux sites ont été étudiées. Les particules collectées ont montré une composition similaire sur les deux sites concernant les espèces majeures. La contribution des activités industrielles a été mise en évidence par des teneurs légèrement plus élevées de certains éléments traces, d'HAP et surtout par une teneur jusqu'à 100 fois plus élevée en dioxines. Nos résultats ont mis en évidence l'influence de nombreuses sources de combustion (diesel, essence, charbon et biomasse) ; la combustion de déchets et d'autres procédés industriels sont également suspectées. Un potentiel génotoxique et mutagène plus prononcé a été mis en évidence pour les particules collectées sur le site sous influence industrielle par rapport aux particules provenant du site sous influence rurale, à l'aide du test d'Ames en milieur liquide et le SOS chromotest. Les effets observés sont très probablement influencés par la fraction organique des particules. Afin d'approfondir la recherche des mécanismes génotoxiques des PM, des cellules bronchiques humaines (BEAS-2B) ont été exposées à différentes concentrations de particules. Les mécanismes de toxicité, tels que l'activation métabolique des HAP(CYP1A1) et les cassures double-brins (quantification de yH2AX par cytométrie de flux et in-cell western), ont été induits par les deux échantillons de PM₂.₅₋₀.₃ avec un effet plus prononcé pour les particules industrielles. Par ailleurs, les PM ont montré une tendance à perturber le fonctionnement du système de réparation de l'ADN (par l'expression des gènes OGG1, NTH1, APE1, NUDT1, DNMT1, MGMT, XPA et XRRC1, et l'expression des protéines PARP1, DNMT1 et OGG1). Les mécanismes de réparation des dommages de l'ADN ont ainsi été réprimés jusqu'à 48h d'exposition aux PM, notamment aux PM₂.₅₋₀.₃ collectées sous influence industrielle, et réactivés après 72h d'exposition. Ces dommages concernent les adduits encombrants à l'ADN, et ceux causés par le stress oxydant, des cassures des brins d'ADN et la méthylation. Nos résultats suggèrent des mécanismes d'action mutagènes, génotoxiques et épigénétiques impliqués dans la cancérogénécité des particules fines, en partie liés à la composition de la fraction organique. / Exposure to air pollution, especially fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅), remains a major health risk, mainly in the developing countries. Northern Lebanon is affected by several sources of anthropogenic, urban and industrial pollution. However, no studies have examined the impact of PM₂.₅ on public health in this region. In addition, it should be noted that the toxicity mechanisms of PM₂.₅ are not fully identified. The aim of this work is to study the composition and the health impact of the atmospheric particulates in Northern Lebanon. An epidemiological survey was performed and fine particles were extracted and characterized physico-chemically and toxicologically. This study was conducted in two sites, one of which is influenced by industrial activities. Perception and epidemiological survet, conducted in two areas in Northern Lebanon, rural and industrial (310 treatable questionnaires/area), showed a relationship between annoyance, respiratory diseases and living in proximity to industrial activities. Moreover, results confirmed the interest in conducting a toxicological study in this region. Hence, to contribute to fulfill the gap of knowledge about the pulmonary toxicity of particulate matter and the mechanisms of action involved in the carcinogenicity, the study of physicochemical characteristics and toxicological endpoints of PM₂.₅₋₀.₃ from both sites were performed. Physicochemical analyses of the collected particles evidenced similar characteristics in major species. In particular, we have shown slightly higher levels of PAHs and trace metals and up to 100 times higher dioxins concentrations at the vicinity of industries. Our results evidenced the influence of numerous combustion sources (diesel, gasoline, coal and biomass burning) ; waste combustion and other industrial processes are also suspected. A more pronounced genotoxic and mutagenic potential was evidenced after exposure to particles collected at the vicinity of industries when compared to the rural ones, using the Ames fluctuation test and SOS chromotest. The effects of the collected particles are probably related to their organic composition. In order to assess the underlying toxic mechanisms, human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) were then exposed to different concentrations of the sampled PM₂.₅₋₀.₃. Genotoxicity mechanisms such as metabolic activation of organic compounds (CYP1A1) and consecutive DNA damages such as DNA strands breaks (yH2AX quantification by flow cytometry analysis and in-cell western assay) were induced by the two samples of PM₂.₅₋₀.₃ , with a more pronounced effect of industrial particles. Moreover, PM showed tendency to alter the DNA repair process (OGGI, NTH1, APE1, NUDT1, DNMT1, MGMT, XPA, XRRC1 gene expression and PARP1, DNMT1, OGG1 proteins expression). DNA repair mechanisms were repressed up to 48h of exposure to PM especially to the industrial influenced PM₂.₅₋₀.₃ and reactivated after 72h of exposure. The DNA damages involve bulky DNA adducts, oxidative stress damages, DNA strand breaks and methylation. These results suggest mutagenic, genotoxic and epigenetic mechanisms of action involved in the carcinogenicity of fine particles, partly related to their organic composition.

Les travaux présentés concernent la modélisation analytique et l’optimisation des machines synchrones à aimants devant fonctionner à haute vitesse dans le cadre de la traction partiellement ou totalement hybrides.Toutefois, une telle application cumule des difficultés d’ordre électromagnétique, thermique et mécanique. D’où l’intérêt de la première partie qui s’intéresse à établir un état de l’art des particularités du fonctionnement à haute vitesse. Ensuite, une modélisation analytique multi-physique simplifiée a été mise en œuvre afin de mener une première comparaison entre quatre types de rotors à aimants. Celle-ci a été basée sur une optimisation multi-objectifs de manière à optimiser la vitesse de base tout en améliorant le rendement sur un cycle. Dans l’optique d’atteindre les performances souhaitées, une modélisation fine des interactions multi-physiques a été réalisée. Les verrous s’opposant à cette amélioration sont bien connus et sont principalement liés à la compacité des structures recherchées.Le cœur de la modélisation interactive que nous avons proposée réside dans la modélisation électromagnétique qui, à l’aide d’un calcul par des schémas réluctants maillés, permet de faire un choix entre deux types de commandes : en courant ou en tension. L'augmentation de la vitesse nécessite de s'intéresser sérieusement aux pertes fer et aux pertes mécaniques. Dans ce travail, nous nous sommes intéressés à développer un modèle mécanique qui estime la vitesse maximale de rotation pouvant s’intégrer aisément dans une procédure d’optimisation. La modélisation est ensuite couplée à un algorithme par essaims particulaires selon une méthodologie de conception faisant intervenir l’approche du dimensionnement optimal.Ces travaux s'inscrivent dans le cadre du projet ANR AAP TTD « e-MECA » (électromécanique Embarquée à Compacité Améliorée) dont les partenaires sont : Valeo (porteur), SKF, IFPEn, TEMPO, Dynfluid et le SATIE. / The work presented concern the analytical modeling and optimization of high speed permanent magnet synchronous machines for Hybrid Electric traction motor.However, such an application accumulates difficulties of electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical order. The first part is interested in establishing a state of the art of the high-speed applications’ particularities. Then, a simplified multiphysic and analytic modeling was implemented to conduct a first comparison between four kinds of PM rotors. This was based on a multi-objective optimization in order to optimize the delivery speed while improving the cycle efficiency. In order to achieve the desired performance, precise multiphysics interactions’ modeling was performed. Bolts opposing this improvement are well known and are mainly related to the compactness of the desired structures.The core of the proposed interactive modeling is the electromagnetic modeling which, using a reluctance network, allows to choose between two kinds of control: current control or voltage control. The high speed constraint requires serious interest to iron and mechanical losses. In this work, we are interested in developing a mechanical model which estimates the maximum speed which can be integrated easily into an optimization procedure. The model is then coupled with a particle swarm algorithm in order to involve the optimal sizing approach.These works join within the framework of the project ANR AAP TTD "e-MECA" (électromécanique Embarquée à Compacité Améliorée) where the partners are: Valeo (project leader), SKF, IFPEn, TEMPO, Dynfluid and SATIE.

Phase And Amplitude Modulated Ofdm For Dispersion Managed Wdm SystemsEisele, Andreas 01 January 2008 (has links)
Amplitude and phase modulated optical OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) are analyzed in a 50GBit/s single channel and 40GBit/s 5 channel 512 subcarrier non-ideal dispersion-compensated fiber optic communication systems. PM-OFDM is investigated as an alternative to AM-OFDM to alleviate the problem associated with amplitude-modulated signals in a nonlinear medium. The inherent dispersion compensation capability in OFDM (using a cyclic prefix) allows transmission over a link whose dispersion map is not exactly known. OFDM also mitigates the effects of dispersion slope in wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) systems. Moreover, the overall dispersion throughout the transmission link may vary due to environmental effects and aging. OFDM is inherently tolerant to over- or under-compensation and dispersion slope mismatch. OFDM transmission over dispersive, non-dispersion managed fiber links using OFDM requires an overhead in excess of the maximum accumulated dispersion. Existing WDM systems usually employ periodic dispersion management. OFDM in these systems requires a smaller overhead. It is, however, more susceptible to nonlinearity due to the coherent beating of subcarriers after each dispersion-compensated span. The large variation in intensity associated with amplitude-modulated OFDM makes this modulation format more susceptible to nonlinear effects in fiber compared to phase-modulated signals. This holds true unless dispersion and EDFA noise lead to amplitude variations strong enough for PM-OFDM to be degraded by nonlinear effects as well. In conclusion OFDM is beneficial for non-ideal dispersion managed systems. PM-OFDM can further improve the performance.

Stabilization of poorly graded sand in full-scale applications is challenging. This thesis evaluated cement-stabilized sand and had two objectives: (1) evaluation of stabilized material using the PM device to quantify engineering properties for future comparison to alterative materials and to investigate the effectiveness of the device with sand and (2) investigation of the merits of alternative application of cement to sand to benchmark against other topically applied materials. The PM device was successfully used to recommend 10% cement for field studies with one sand, successfully allowed data collection in laboratory and field applications, and its potential in sand seems promising though more overarching conclusions on characterization of sand using the PM device are withheld for subsequent efforts. Topical application methods developed in this thesis were able to percolate cement into sand and produce an average estimated unconfined compressive strength of 245 psi measured on cores that were 2.5 inches thick.

Yes / Brittleness in manganese steels can be associated with processing in a "wet¿
[micro]climate resulting in the formation of continuous oxide networks. The formation of
these networks can be prevented by sintering in an atmosphere, also ¿local¿ in a semiclosed
container, adhering to the Ellingham-Richardson oxide reduction criteria. When
this requirement is satisfied, however, further types of ductile ¿ brittle transitions are
observed. Rapid cooling, typically above 40°C/min, produces enough martensite to render
Fe-(3-4)Mn-(0·6-0·7)C material macroscopically brittle. Quenched and conventionally
tempered structures remain brittle. It is tentatively suggested that segregation of minor
alloying/tramp element(s), as in cast materials, is responsible for this temper
embrittlement. To overcome it, heat treatment at a temperature no higher than 200°C,
recovery/stress relief, is recommended.
