Lokalizace a identifikace typu poškození pneumatických pohonů / Localization and identification of damage type of pneumatic drives

Pneumatic drives are an integral part of many machinery, with high demands on their reliability. Unfortunately, they sometimes fail, either due to improper production or assembly at the factory or by gradual degradation of moving parts and sealing elements during operation. Current diagnostic methods do not allow localization or identification of the type of damage and do not allow the operator to make a qualified decision. This work deals with the use of acoustic emission for these purposes. On PB type cylinders manufactured by Poličské strojírny a.s., a methodology is introduced which leads to the direct identification or at least localization of selected defects. By implementing this methodology in the final inspection of the production plant, the percentage of exposed pieces of waste will be increased, thus preventing accidents of these faulty pieces during operation.

Návrh testovacího zařízení pneumatických aktuátorů / Design for testing device used to measure air leakage from linear pneumatic actuator

This thesis is focused on detecting air leakage in serial production of pneumatic linear actuators. Testing for air leakage is an important part of the production process in which the manufacturer ensures that the product satisfies quality requirements and works correctly. The thesis was created in collaboration with the Czech manufacturing plant of SMC Industrial Automation CZ s.r.o., which produces pneumatic actuators. Goal of the design part of the thesis is to select the most effective method for testing and finding universal principle for testing in specified conditions. The principle is then applied to design a testing device for the CQ2 cylinders. The testing device consists of three parts - pneumatic circuit, control circuit and electric circuit. Thesis conclusion contains comparison of the newly designed testing device with the device currently in use.

Design, Manufacturing, and Control of Soft and Soft/Rigid Hybrid Pneumatic Robotic Systems

Soft robotic systems have recently been considered as a new approach that is in principle better suited for tasks where safety and adaptability are important. That is because soft materials are inherently compliant and resilient in the event of collisions. They are also lightweight and can be low-cost; in general, soft robots have the potential to achieve many tasks that were not previously possible with traditional robotic systems. In this paper, we propose a new manufacturing process for creating multi-chambered pneumatic actuators and robots. We focus on using fabric as the primary structural material, but plastic films can be used instead of textiles as well. We introduce two different methods to create layered bellows actuators, which can be made with a heat press machine or in an oven. We also describe origami-like actuators with possible corner structures. Moreover, the fabrication process permits the creation of soft and soft/rigid hybrid robotic systems, and enables the easy integration of sensors into these robots. We analyze various textiles that are possibly used with this method, and model bellows actuators including operating force, restoring force, and estimated geometry with multiple bellows. We then demonstrate the process by showing a bellows actuator with an embedded sensor and other fabricated structures and robots. We next present a new design of a multi-DOF soft/rigid hybrid robotic manipulator. It contains a revolute actuator and several roll-pitch actuators which are arranged in series. To control the manipulator, we use a new variant of the piece-wise constant curvature (PCC) model. The robot can be controlled using forward and inverse kinematics with embedded inertial measurement units (IMUs). A bellows actuator, which is a subcomponent of the manipulator, is modeled with a variable-stiffness spring, and we use the model to predict the behavior of the actuator. With the model, the roll-pitch actuator stiffnesses are measured in all directions through applying forces and torques. The stiffness is used to predict the behavior of the end effector. The robotic system introduced achieved errors of less than 5% when compared to the models, and positioning accuracies of better than 1cm. / Doctor of Philosophy / Future robotic systems are expected to deal with many tasks in real-world environments. MODELING AND CONTROL OF AN IMPROVED HYBRID PNEUMATIC-ELECTRIC ACTUATOR

Combining the advantages from electric motor and the pneumatic actuator, the hybrid pneumatic-electric actuator is expected to be safe, low-cost, clean, high power to weight ratio, and to provide precise position control. In this thesis, the modeling and control of an improved hybrid pneumatic-electric actuator prototype is presented. The actuator’s main components consist of a low-friction pneumatic cylinder, two on/off solenoid valves, and a small DC motor. The cylinder and motor are connected to a common output shaft using gears. The shaft rotates a single-link robot arm. Its position is measured by an incremental encoder. The prototype was improved by incorporating faster switching valves, flow controls, a faster valve drive circuit, a high resolution encoder rather than the existing linear potentiometer, more accurate pressure sensors and stronger gears. A system dynamic model without the valve dynamic was developed identified and validated using open-loop experiments. The valve models for a discrete input and PWM input were then developed and validated separately. The use of bipolynomial function and artificial neural network fitting methods for modeling the valve mass flow rates were compared. The combined system model with valve dynamics was validated experimentally. Two model-based nonlinear position controllers, using the backstepping and discrete-valued model predictive control (DVMPC) methods, were designed, simulated and extensively tested. Testing was done with the actuator operating using the cylinder alone, the motor alone and in hybrid mode using the cylinder and motor together. Operating in the hybrid mode reduced the root-mean-square error (RMSE) up to 80%. A stability analysis for the backstepping control including the valve modeling error, friction model error, and electric motor torque modeling error was performed. Compensation terms were designed to improve the performance for the two controllers. Additional stability analyses were performed for backstepping controller with a feedback term and the DVMPC with motor control. A payload estimation algorithm was proposed and shown to enhance the robustness of the DVMPC operating in vertical configuration. Simulations and experiments demonstrated that the model-based controllers performed well for both vertical and horizontal configurations. Regarding robustness to payload mismatch, if the payload was within the load capacity of the hybrid actuator, the model-based controllers were both insensitive to the payload variations in horizontal configuration. The backstepping controller was also robust to the payload variations in the vertical configuration. In experiments, the backstepping control in hybrid actuation mode produced a RMSE of 0.0066 radian for a 2 Hz sine wave desired position trajectory with a 0.3 radian amplitude. With DVMPC, this value decreased to 0.0045 radian. These tracking errors were shown to be 30 to 50% less than those produced by a modified linear position plus velocity plus acceleration controller. / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Μελέτη, κατασκευή και έλεγχος (με PLC) συστήματος ολισθαίνουσας συστοιχίας πνευματικών μυών

Η προσομοίωση της κίνησης των ζώων αποτελεί αντικείμενο έρευνας στον τομέα της ρομποτικής από το 1960. Έκτοτε έχουν κατασκευαστεί πολλά ρομπότ τα οποία εξομοιώνουν πλήρως την κίνηση των θηλαστικών, των πτηνών και των ερπετών και συμπεριφέρονται ακριβώς όπως αυτά. Συγκεκριμένα στον τομέα των ερπετών ο Hirose το 1972 παρουσίασε το τον ACMIII, το πρώτο φίδι ρομπότ, το οποίο μπορούσε να κινηθεί μόνο σε λεία επιφάνεια, προσομοιώνοντας την κίνηση του φιδιού. Εν συνεχεία, με την πρόοδο της τεχνολογίας και τον πνευματικό κόπο χιλιάδων επιστημόνων, κατασκευάστηκαν διάφορα εξελιγμένα μοντέλα ρομπότ-φιδιών με τεράστιες δυνατότητες. Αποτελεί, πλέον, πραγματικότητα η ύπαρξη ρομπότ-φιδιών, που μπορούν να κινηθούν σε οποιαδήποτε επιφάνεια. Στη διπλωματική αυτή πραγματοποιήθηκε η κατασκευή και η λειτουργία ενός σύνθετου ενεργοποιητή αποτελούμενου από μια συστοιχία πνευματικών μυών πεπιεσμένου αέρα και ελεγχόμενου μέσω ενός προγραμματιζόμενου λογικού ελεγκτή (PLC). Τα έμβολα συνδέονται μεταξύ τους είτε με σταθερή είτε με ελεύθερη άρθρωση επιτρέποντας στη συστοιχία να κινηθεί ευθύγραμμα ή καμπυλόγραμμα αντίστοιχα. Κατά την ευθύγραμμη κίνηση η κατασκευή αποτελείται από 7 τεχνητούς μύες, οι οποίοι συνδέονται μεταξύ τους με σταθερή άρθρωση και τροφοδοτούνται από ψηφιακές βαλβίδες. Επίσης, η συστοιχία είναι εφοδιασμένη με μια συμπαγή σιδερένια κατασκευή ως ουρά και έναν αυτοσχέδιο μηχανισμό φρένων. Ο χρήστης, αφού φορτώσει το αντίστοιχο πρόγραμμα στην CPU του PLC, με το πάτημα ενός μπουτόν ξεκινά την κίνηση της διάταξης. Στο πρόγραμμα αυτό χρησιμοποιείται ένα πλήθος από χρονομετρητές οι οποίοι καθορίζουν πότε πραγματοποιείται η διαστολή και η συστολή των εμβόλων ρυθμίζοντας έτσι τη συμπεριφορά του πνευματικού ενεργοποιητή. Στην παρούσα διπλωματική αναλύθηκαν 3 μοτίβα ευθύγραμ-μης κίνησης. Στο πρώτο μοτίβο η συστολή και η διαστολή είναι ανεξάρτητες, στο δεύτερο έχουμε διαδοχική συστολή/διαδοχική διαστολή και στο τρίτο η διαστολή επικαλύπτει τη συστολή. Η διακοπή της κίνησης γίνεται μέσω του μπουτόν λήξης. Για το σενάριο της οφιοειδούς και της πλάγιας κίνησης η κατασκευή αποτελείται από 5 τεχνητούς πνευματικούς ενεργοποιητές. Οι 4 χρησιμοποιούνται ως ενεργό μέρος της συστοιχίας, ενώ ο πέμπτος ως κεφαλή. Ανάμεσα στα έμβολα υπάρχει αρθρωτή ζεύξη με δυνατότητα κίνησης. Έτσι, κατά τη συστολή και την διαστολή των μυών δημιουργείται μια γωνία μεταξύ τους. Ρυθμίζοντας αυτή τη γωνία κατάλληλα μέσω της πίεσης επιτυγχάνουμε την οφιοειδή κίνηση του σύνθετου πνευματικού ενεργοποιητή. Ο χρήστης μέσω μπουτόν έχει τη δυνατότητα να ελέγχει την κίνηση της συστοιχίας. Επιλέγει την έναρξη και τη λήξη της κίνησης καθώς και το αναποδογυρίζει. Στην ευθύγραμμη κίνηση εστιάσαμε την προσοχή μας στην εύρεση του βέλτιστου πλάνου κίνησης ώστε να επιτευχθεί το γρηγορότερο αποτέλεσμα. Από την άλλη μεριά στην καμπυλόγραμμη κίνηση τα πράγματα δεν ήταν τόσο απλά. Κύριο ζητούμενο εδώ ήταν η προσομοίωση της οφιοειδούς κίνησης. Η αδυναμία εφαρμογής του θεωρητικού υπόβαθρου που ήδη υπάρχει για τα φίδια-ρομπότ, εξαιτίας της ασυμμετρίας της κατασκευής, της αδυναμίας να επιτευχθούν οι επιθυμητές γωνίες λόγω παραμόρφωσης του σκελετού και της μη γραμμικής συμπεριφοράς της, οδήγησαν στη διενέργεια πολλών πειραμάτων ώστε να υπερκεραστούν οι δυσκολίες και να επιτευχθεί το επιθυμητό αποτέλεσμα. Παράλληλα, στην πλάγια κίνηση μελετήθηκε η ικανότητα μετακίνησης της συστοιχίας σε ανισόπεδα τερέν. Κατά τη διάρκεια των πειραμάτων παρουσιάστηκε μια πληθώρα προβλημάτων τα οποία έπρεπε να αντιμετωπιστούν τόσο στην ευθύγραμμη όσο και στην οφιοειδή κίνηση. Λόγω της μεγάλης δύναμης που ασκούν οι μύες κατά την εκτόνωσή τους και του μικρού συντελεστή τριβής του εδάφους του εργαστηρίου, η συστοιχία κατά τη διαστολή των εμβόλων ολίσθαινε προς τα όπισθεν, δημιουργώντας έτσι σημαντική καθυστέρηση στην συνολική μετακίνηση της συστοιχίας. Για την αντιμετώπιση του φαινομένου αυτού χρησιμοποιήθηκε ένα σιδερένιο βαρίδιο και ένα αυτοσχέδιο φρένο στην “ουρά” της συστοιχίας, που συγκρατούσαν τη συστοιχία κατά τη διαστολή των μυών και την ωθούσαν προς τα εμπρός. Αυτή η μεγάλη δύναμη των μυών ήταν πρόβλημα και για την καμπυλόγραμμη κίνηση, καθώς προκαλούσε παραμόρφωση του σκελετού, εισάγοντας έτσι σημαντικούς περιορισμούς στη μέγιστη πίεση των μυών. Ταυτόχρονα, οδηγούσε σε “χαλάρωση” των βιδών που συγκρατούσαν την κινούμενη άρθρωση. Εκτός αυτών, ένα επιπλέον εμπόδιο που παρουσιάστηκε ήταν η παρακώλυση της κίνησης από τους σωλήνες που τροφοδοτούσαν τα έμβολα. Αυτό το θέμα ήταν μείζονος σημασίας για την οφιοειδή κίνηση, καθώς αν δεν ομαδοποιούνταν κατάλληλα οι σωλήνες, η μετακίνηση της συστοιχίας ήταν μηδενική. Τέλος, οι βαλβίδες έπρεπε να είχαν τη δυνατότητα της εύκολης μετακίνησης, καθώς, λόγω του περιορισμένου μήκους σωλήνων, εισάγονταν περιορισμοί στο διάστημα που μπορούσε να διανύσει η συστοιχία. Τα θέματα αυτά αντιμετωπίσθηκαν με πρακτικούς τρόπους ώστε η μεταφορά των βαλβίδων να γίνεται εύκολα και με ασφάλεια, χωρίς να παρενοχλείται η κίνηση. Εν κατακλείδι, το αποτέλεσμα της προσπάθειας αυτής ήταν να δημιουργηθεί ένας σύνθετος ενεργοποιητής, ο οποίος έχει τη δυνατότητα να κινείται πλάγια, ευθύγραμμα, καθώς και να προσομοιώνει την κίνηση του φιδιού σε πολύ ικανοποιητικό βαθμό με μικρό όμως αποτέλεσμα ως προς την ταχύτητα. Η χρήση αισθητήρων για μέτρηση της γωνίας που δημιουργείται μεταξύ των εμβόλων και η κατασκευή πιο ανθεκτικού σκελετού, ώστε να αντέχει στη μεγάλη δύναμη που ασκούν οι μύες, θα οδηγούσαν σε ένα καλύτερο αποτέλεσμα αλλά θα ξέφευγε από τα όρια της εργασίας αυτής. / --

Nessa pesquisa é apresentada uma inovação tecnológica em aplicações de controle de posição em máquinas e/ou dispositivos: o Controlador de Posição Linear Hidro- Pneumático. Para os casos nos quais têm-se grandes esforços combinados com pequenos deslocamentos, normalmente esse trabalho é feito com o uso de Sistemas Servo-Hidráulcos nos quais, devido às características mencionadas do nicho de mercado visado pela presente proposta, representam um custo elevado quando comparado com a solução Hidro-Pneumática aqui descrita. Salienta-se a simplicidade da infra-estrutura requerida para a instalação dessa alternativa, e também a redução do desperdício energético com relação à tecnologia tradicional com a Servo-Hidráulica. Observou-se nos testes com o protótipo, um excelente desempenho do sistema em termos de rapidez de resposta, como ainda no quesito resolução de posicionamento cujos valores encontrados apresentam-se na casa de 0,05 segundos e 0,01 mm, respectivamente. O pequeno tamanho físico obtido com essa nova tecnologia é outro item relevante, permitindo-se o seu emprego em locais de reduzido espaço disponível. . Resultados de simulações numéricas e de testes experimentais são apresentadas, bem como perspectivas de desenvolvimentos futuros. / This research presents a technological innovation for applications in machine / device position control: the Hydro-Pneumatic Linear Position controller. In cases where great efforts are combined with small dislocations, this task is normally accomplished by means of Servo Hydraulic Systems that, due to particular characteristics of the market envisaged by the present proposition, represent elevated costs, when compared to those of the hydro-pneumatic solution described here. This work presents an analytical numerical model for the devise as well as an experimental prototype. It worth noting the infra-structure simplicity required for this alternative implementation, and also the reduction in energy waste when compared to the traditional servo-hydraulic technology. The prototype experimental tests demonstrated the system excellent behavior in what concerns answer speed and position resolution whose values were respectively in range 0.05 s and 0,01 mm. The small physical size obtained with this technology is another relevant item, which allows the device use in places of reduced available space. Numerical simulation and experimental test results are presented as well as perspectives of future developments

De la conception à la commande d'une nouvelle interface haptique 4 axes hybride pneumatique électrique pour la simulation d'accouchement : Le BirthSIM / From design to control of a new 4 degrees of freedom hybrid pneumatic electric haptic interface to simulate chlidbirth delivery : BirthSIM

Les simulateurs d'accouchement sont des outils dédiés à la formation du personnel médical en gynécologie obstétrique. Le BirthSIM développé au laboratoire Ampère constitue une interface haptique de simulateur d'accouchement permettant de reproduire divers scénarios d'accouchement et de former les jeunes sages-femmes et obstétriciens aux différents gestes techniques nécessaires dans le cadre de leurs professions. Dans ce manuscrit, les récentes améliorations apportées au prototype du BirthSIM seront présentées. Parmi ces améliorations, deux sont particulièrement remarquables. La première concerne l'augmentation du nombre de degrés de liberté pilotés de l'interface. Ainsi, les travaux ayant permis le passage d'une interface ne comptant qu'un seul degré de liberté à quatre seront détaillés. Le BirthSIM est le seul simulateur d'accouchement qui intègre à la fois des actionneurs électriques et pneumatiques. La seconde évolution concerne le développement de lois de commande permettant d'améliorer le rendu haptique de l'interface. Les lois de commande retenues permettent d'asservir en position le BirthSIM, mais également de régler la raideur de l'interface. Ce réglage de raideur en coordonnées cartésiennes a pour objectif de reproduire le comportement de la tête fœtale en contact avec les tissus mous du bassin au cours d'une contraction. La loi de commande présentée dans ces travaux de thèse est une loi de commande non-linéaire synthétisée par backstepping. En effet, cette méthode permet de prendre en compte les phénomènes non-linéaires agissant sur le comportement des actionneurs pneumatiques. Cette commande, assurant le suivi d'une consigne de position et une modification de la raideur en temps réel à partir d'une stratégie de réglage de gain, a été testée à la fois en simulation et sur le prototype du BirthSIM. Les performances de cette commande sont également comparées à celles de lois de commande plus classiquement utilisées en robotique. / The childbirth simulators are developed for practitioner training in gynecology and obstetrics. The BirthSIM is a haptic interface which simulates various childbirth scenarios to teach obstetricians and midwives the technical delivery gestures. In this work, the latest improvements on the BirthSIM prototype will be presented. Two improvements are especially detailed. The first one consists in adding actuated degrees of freedom to the haptic interface. Thus, the works which have led to a new four degrees of freedom robot are presented. The BirthSIM is the only childbirth simulator which is actuated by electrical and pneumatic actuators. The aim of the second improvement is to synthesize control laws which improve the haptic rendering. The studied control laws allow the haptic interface to be controlled in position and its stiffness to be tuned in real time. This cartesian stiffness tuning is suitable to reproduce the behavior of the fetal head surrounded by the maternal pelvic muscles. The control law presented in this document have been obtained by the non-linear backstepping synthesis. Indeed, the non-linear phenomenons occurring in pneumatic cylinders can be taken into account by this method. The controller obtained in this work allows the BirthSIM end-effector to track a reference position but also allows the robot stiffness to be tuned in real time. The stiffness control is based on a gain tuning strategy. Finally, the performances have been evaluated in simulation and experimental tests. Those performances have also been compared to the other conventional compliant controllers of the robotic field.

The transition to more environmentally sustainable transports, as well as rising fuel prices create a demand for efficient means of transportation. Liftable axles have shown potential to save fuel and reduces tire wear on heavy vehicles. This thesis proposes a simulation environment and a control method for the electronically controlled air suspension system on a four axle truck that enables axle lifting. The goal of the work is to propose a control method that fulfills certain safety criteria and is robust to disturbances introduced by an external un-modeled controller. A simulation environment is proposed, based upon two different physical models of the suspension system. The first model offers simplicity for the initial tuning of the controller and the second model serves as a platform for more realistic testing of the controller before the final vehicle test. The results from the vehicle tests show that the proposed controller is able to regulate the pressure in the suspension bellows to the desired load distribution between the axles of the vehicle, while the vehicle is maintaining a certain height above ground. The vehicle test showed that it was difficult to read the correct pressure in the suspension bellows when the valves controlling the airflow in and out of the suspension bellow were open. A method for compensating the error when the valves are open is proposed. / Övergången till hållbara och miljövänliga transporter samt stigande bränslepriser skapar en efterfrågan av mer effektiva transportmedel. Lyftbara axlar har visats medföra minskad bränsleförbrukning och däckslitage. Denna uppsats föreslår en simuleringsmiljö samt en metod för reglering av det elektroniskt styrda luftfjädringssystemet på en fyraxlig lastbil som möjliggör lyftning av en axel. Målet med arbetet är att föreslå en metod för reglering av systemet som uppfyller en rad säkerhetskriterier och är robust för störningar introducerade av en extern, icke-modellerad styrenhet. Den föreslagna simuleringsmiljön är baserad på två olika fysiska modeller av fjädringssystemet. Den första modellen karakteriseras av dess enkelhet och används för inledande testning och justering av regulatorn. Den andra modellen används för mer realistisk testning av regulatorn innan det avslutande fordonstestet. Resultatet från fordonstesterna visar att den föreslagna regulatorn kan reglera trycket i luftbälgen till den önskade lastfördelningen mellan axlarna på fordonet medan dess höjd bibehålls. Under fordonstestet konstaterades att det inte gick att avläsa det korrekta trycket i luftbälgen när ventilerna som styr luftflödet till och från luftbälgen var öppna. En metod för att kompensera felet som uppstår när ventilerna är öppna föreslås.
