Mazarinades et Normandie / Mazarinades and Normandy

Kürschner, Chloé 29 April 2016 (has links)
This work seeks to analyze the links between the mazarinades and Normandy. The first link is bibliographic. It focuses both on the repartition of the mazarinades in Normandy and on the Norman corpus. This bibliographic point of view aims to comprehend and define the Norman corpus in order to understand its stakes. At the heart of a politicized literature based on the representation of power, the Norman corpus examines the multiples representations of Normandy as well as their political role during the Fronde. Thanks to the actions taken and recounted in the booklets, to the views expressed by and about the Normans, or to the various staging of events, a whole strategy is put into place to encourage Norman intervention. The mazarinades, be they Norman or Parisian, royalist or frondeur, construct a network of texts and images in order to exploit the representation of Normandy as a political instrument and the centralizing tendencies of the state. In so doing, the mazarinades that deal with Normandy transcend the illusion of a regional literature to become a literature of state.

Resquícios trágicos em Antonio, de Beatriz Bracher / Tragic vestige in Antonio, by Beatriz Bracher

Leme Júnior, Norival 25 November 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study it to analyze the book Antonio, by Beatriz Bracher, on the tragic aspect. The story is a transgenerational family saga about the decline of a bourgeois family in São Paulo during the 20th century. The hypothesis that guides this analysis is that something irreconcilable happens in the life of one of its members, while he is traveling to a very arid region in the state of Minas Gerais, he has succumbed to his own choices changing negatively the lives of everyone around him. The contemporary individual lives the ruin of the great narratives of the 20th century, such as the frustration of the libertarian ideas of the 60s and 70s, and somehow feels helpless and lost about an uncertain future. This existential crisis scenario could be fertile for the revival of the tragedy with vestige or \"tragic wreckage\" in contemporary fiction. Finally, from the concept of political literature, this study aims to verify if Antonio concentrates relevant questions about the contemporary Brazil without resorting to a conciliatory view within fiction, which is, questioning Brazilian modernity - or its modernizing ideas

A luta da terra nas literaturas portuguesa e brasileira: a linha marcada no chão que une José Saramago e Euclides da Cunha / The struggle for land in the Portuguese and in the Brazilian literatures: the ground line that connects José Saramago and Euclides da Cunha

Luciana de Oliveira Mangueira 28 March 2014 (has links)
Two novels written in different countries and in different historical contexts depict the situation in the countryside throughout time in Brazil and Portugal. The process of the gathering of men around a common trait the opportunity of survival on land through the job guarantee also becomes the struggle against alienation and, afterwards, against the armed force that protect both the State and the landowner. The issues that spin around the land transcend the commonly telluric characteristic once this is also a character effectively active in the life of countrymen. Moreover, such man is also a multiple character, which is represented by the backland man from Bahia and the countryman from Alentejo: they keep in themselves the frailty of the body that, fairly enough, turns into their greatest strength. Te movement towards the struggle changes men and land, it changes History. This is the process observed and depicted by Euclides da Cunha in Os sertões (Rebellion in the Backlands) and by José Saramago in Levantado do Chão (Raised from the Ground). The Canudos campaign and the struggles towards the right to work in Portuguese country lands are side by side for both represent, under the perspective of these novels (and novelists) narrators, an analysis on the injustices promoted by the power of the State against those who do not own anything, and their standing for their rights, for the change of the state-of-things

Basil Bunting's late modernism : from Pound to poetic community

Niven, Alex F. January 2013 (has links)
This study examines Basil Bunting's development as a poet from his meeting with Ezra Pound in Paris in 1923, through his collaborations with Pound, Louis Zukofsky, and other members of the Objectivist circle in the 1930s, up to his meeting with Allen Ginsberg and Tom Pickard in 1960s Britain against a backdrop of social activism and modernist revival. In particular, it seeks to query the critical commonplace that Bunting was a sceptic interested solely in the autotelic form of poetry, and to argue that his revival at the time of the long poem Briggflatts in the sixties should be read historically - as a case study that shows the Poundian tradition of praxis and orality acquiring a newly communitarian, leftist emphasis in the context of post-war Anglo-American poetry. The study draws extensively on unpublished manuscripts and letters held at the Basil Bunting Archive, Durham University, the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas (Austin), and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University.

The political woman in German women's writing 1845-1919

Mikus, Birgit January 2012 (has links)
This thesis analyses the depiction and its function of politically active women in novels by six female authors from the margins of the democratic revolution of 1848 and the first German women’s movement. The thesis asks (i) what their political stance was in relation to democratic developments and women’s rights, (ii) how they rendered their political convictions into literary form, (iii) which literary images they used, criticised, or invented in order to depict politically active women in their novels in a positive light, and (iv) which narrative strategies they employed to ‘smuggle’ politically and socially radical ideas into what were sometimes only ostensibly conventional plots. The thesis combines intertextual analysis with poetic analyses of individual texts in order to highlight deviant elements in narrative strategy, imagery, or text-internal appraisals by the narrator or author. In order to contextualise the chosen texts as well as my analyses, it draws on the historical environment (social and legal developments, revolutions, technological progress) for the definition of what can be considered radical and political in the period 1845-1919. Additionally, the thesis is firmly grounded in feminist theory, which provides the instruments for highlighting the concepts and circumstances in which the six authors’ works are situated. The essays and novels analysed were written before feminist theory was established; however, their proto-feminist observations, demands, and discursive tactics contributed much to the formation and institutionalisation of feminist thought and, ultimately, theory. In their efforts to construct a positive role model for the political woman, the six authors chosen are united in their notion that such a role model should evolve from bourgeois values of family and work ethics, but the examples manifested in their novels show a great variety of degrees of radicalism.

In a complementary manner, it intends also to evaluate if the own latin american history represents an incentive to researchers of different knowledge's areas get help in the Agamben's teachings, in reason to a convergency of theories (Homo Sacer, State of Exception, bare life, biopolitic, camp, etc) and facts (colonization, dictatorial regimes, violence state, etc.). At the end, original manners to enrich reasonings and debates about important social political problems will also be evaluated, using, for that, concepts developed by Giorgio Agamben, writer that, necessary to register, owns a theoretical framework rich, dense, sometimes complex, but, first off all, quite appropriate to face actual questions related to the natural tension between the State and the Individual and, therefore, related to the own life.

La Tenture de la Dame à la licorne : la figure féminine au service de l'image masculine / The Lady and the Unicorn Tapestries : Feminine figures at the service of the masculine image

Sowley, Katherine Ilsley 10 December 2012 (has links)
The 'Lady and the Unicorn' tapestries are most often interpreted as an allegory of the physical senses, but their iconography is remarkable for its integration of armorial elements. Each composition is organized like a heraldic emblem, such that the main figures replace the coat-of-arms in its position and its function. Though this work is frequently identified as a monument to the patron’s socio-professional success, no effort has been made to understand how the scenes contribute to his personal representation. The lack of interest for the decidedly female character of this iconographic programme is another weakness in previous studies of these tapestries. This doctoral dissertation proposes to examine the 'Lady and the Unicorn' and its representative function by analysing the cultural, literary and iconographic traditions, as well as the socio-historic realities, that shape the image of social excellence the patron constructs in order to represent himself and his family.

: Contribution to the socio-historical politicization process. 1868-1898

Passard, Cédric 24 October 2013 (has links)
The last third of the 19th century was not just any pamphleteering time amongst others. It occurred in a formerly unheard-of period of democratization, which conferred the pamphleteering reality a new status, thus enabling it to carve its way into the official public space. Besides, it was also marked by the invention of the pamphleteer's figure and the emergence of personalities acknowledged as such, some of whom boasting first rate visibility. For all their differing political cultures, these figures helped organize a whole set and world of the pamphlet, at the intersection of literature, journalism and politics. Through their violent discursive repertoire, these pamphleteers question the political order that was then being elaborated, as well as the then on-going process of civilization of political mores. Our research thus aims to examine pamphleteers' contribution to the process of politicization, on the assumption that these could be said to have acted as important mediators of politics. Our work is intended to grasp, within a socio-historical perspective, to what extent – during that period when the Republic was getting increasingly entrenched and democracy more stable – pamphleteers might be said to have represented an evolution of politics off the beaten path, thus favoring a symbolic form of unconventional participation in politics and ultimately embodying a transitional form of rationalization as regards political passions, hovering between revolutionary riots and democratic patience.
