Interfacial Characterization of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS) Amphiphiles and Polymer Blends: Thermodynamics, Morphology, and Rheology

Deng, Jianjun 25 April 2005 (has links)
Over the past two decades one class of oligomers, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), has attracted considerable attention because of their unique hybrid organic/inorganic molecular structures and nanoscopic sizes. While surface and interfacial properties may play a key role in many potential POSS applications, relatively little is actually known about the surface properties of POSS. This dissertation provides studies of the interfacial aspects of both POSS molecules and POSS/polymer blends at the air/water interface (A/W) through surface pressure-area per molecule (π-A) isotherm, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), and interfacial stress rheometry (ISR) studies. Results for POSS Langmuir thin films at A/W show that trisilanol-POSS derivatives are a new class of amphiphiles, that exhibit multiple phase transitions in going from traditional 2D Langmuir monolayers (1 POSS molecule thick) to various 3D multilayer films upon compression. With small length/diameter ratios and bulky shapes, the monolayer phase behavior and packing states of different POSS are simpler than the traditional rod-like lipids. Meanwhile trisilanol-POSS derivatives have very different collapse behavior and multilayer organization showing strong substituent effects even though they have similar molecular sizes. While trisilanolisobutyl-POSS (TiBuP) monolayers undergo collapse around π ≈ 18 mNm⁻¹ and form various ordered or disordered solid-like 3D aggregates at different compression rates, trisilanolcyclohexyl-POSS (TCyP) monolayers collapse into trilayers via instantaneous nucleation with hemispherical edge growth around π ≈ 3.7 mNm⁻¹. ISR results reveal three different non-Newtonian flow regimes that correlate with phase transitions in the Pi-A isotherms. Further symmetric compression after trilayer formation induces TCyP thin films to self-assemble into highly ordered crystalline-like hydrophobic multilayers (≈8 POSS molecule thick) with unique rod-like morphologies, which are dramatically different from –collapsed– morphologies seen in other systems. By treating POSS derivatives as ideal nanofiller for studying confinement effects on filled polymer systems, amphiphilic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) derivatives with different polar functional groups are studied as blends with TiBuP and octaisobutyl-POSS at A/W to resolve one of the key challenges for current nanocomposite applications: How to control nanofiller dispersion in polymer matrices? The results in this dissertation reveal that introducing polar groups into polymeric matrix polymers is a good way to control dispersion. / Ph. D.

Compatibilisation of polysulphones/polyester blends

Martin, Lee January 1994 (has links)
Ternary blends comprising Polysulphones [Polyethersulphone (PES) and Polysulphone (PSO)], the Polyhydroxyether of bisphenol-A (Phenoxy), and Polyesters [Poly( ethylene terephthlate) (PET) and Poly(butylene terephthlate) (PBT)] have been studied particularly with the aim in mind of elucidating the factors determining their miscibility and morphology. Binary and ternary combinations, including equivalent systems based on a butylene terephthlate-tetramethylene oxide block copolymer (PBT-TMO), were prepared from solution and by mixing in the melt state using both an internal mixer and a twin screw extruder. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to examme the morphology of these blends. A co-continuous, (interpenetrating), dual-phase morphology was displayed by both the PSO/PBT and PSO/PBT-TMO (70/30) combinations. The compatibility was further increased by the addition of Phenoxy, which was evidenced by the formation of a very fine dispersion of the two phases for both PSO/Phenoxy/PBT and PSO/Phenoxy/PBT-TMO blends, in the weight ratio of (60/15/25). A lower level of compatibility was displayed by the equivalent blends based on PES and PET, as a matrix/dispersed particle type of morpholgy was usually observed. Differential thermal analysis and dynamic mechanical analysis measurements were also employed to ascertain the level of miscibility in these systems. A single composition dependent glass transition temperature was displayed by the binary PBT/Phenoxy and PBT-TMO/Phenoxy melt blends, and the binary PES/Phenoxy and _PSO/Phenoxy solution blends. The remaining blends displayed two separate glass transition temperatures that were often broader and closer together than those of the homopolymers. This effect was more significant for blends containing the Phenoxy compatibiliser, confirming that these systems are semi-miscible. Solvent resistance measurements were made on 500μm thick extruded sheets by measuring the time to failure at stress levels corresponding to 30% and 50% of the tensile strength. The blends displaying a matrix/dispersed particle type of morphology revealed poor solvent resistance and mechanical properties. The blends displaying a cocontinuous interpenetrating dual-phase morphology on the other hand displayed a much higher solvent resistance and enhanced mechanical properties.

Procédés d'extrusion réactive et de mélange de polymères : synthèse contrôlée de copolymères greffés à base de polystyrène et de polyamide : et étude de l'efficacité de compatibilisation de ces copolymères / Réactive and polymer blending process : controlled synthesis of polystyrene and polyamide graft copolymers and compatibilizing efficiency of these copolymers

Zhang, Cai-Liang 10 November 2008 (has links)
Most polymer pairs are immiscible, leading to phase separation at equilibrium and yield a material with poor properties. To address this challenge, block or graft copolymers pre-made or generated in-situ by reactive blending are often used as compatibilizers. Most studies are focused on the compatibilizing efficiency of block copolymers and few studies address that of graft copolymers, partly because of difficulties of controlling their molecular structures. This thesis is devoted to the study of the emulsification efficiency of graft copolymers. It is composed of three parts: (1) development of a novel reactive extrusion process for synthesizing graft copolymers with polystyrene (PS) as backbone and polyamide 6 (PA6) as grafts; (2) emulsification efficiency of PS-g-PA6 graft copolymers for PS/PA6 blends; and (3) concept of emulsifier- tracer

Structuration des charges dans des mélanges de polymères immiscibles / Selective localisation of fillers in immiscible polymer blends

Plattier-Boné, Julien 15 February 2013 (has links)
The aim of this work is to understand mechanisms responsible for particles localisation in immiscible polymer blends. This study shows that carbon-black fillers localisation in polypropylene (PP)/ poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) blends is strongly influenced by the viscosity ratio (rather than thermodynamic parameters through the wetting coefficient). The localisation of the fillers is explained by a competition of hydrodynamic forces applied on particles localised at the interface. The transfer of fillers is investigated at the droplet scale by observation of the relaxation of CB-filled PCL droplets suspended in PP matrix. CB particles are transferred from the PCL droplet to the PP matrix by a new mechanism, called “zip flow”, which involves the erosion of the droplet edges, leading to the extraction of particles localised there. The control of these parameters allows to localize fillers selectively at the interface and to reduce significantly the electrical percolation threshold.

Elaboration et caractérisation de matériaux multiphasiques à base de polylactide (PLA) et de polyhydroxyalcanoates (PHA) / Elaboration and characterization of multiphasic polylactide (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) multiphasic blends

Gérard, Thibaut 29 August 2013 (has links)
The objective of this PhD work is to provide a systematic and detailed study of the properties of PLA and PHA blends prepared by melt mixing. In particular, the rheological behaviour, the miscibility, the morphology, the mechanical properties and the influence of physical aging on the tensile properties of PLA/PHBV blends prepared in an internal mixer and by twin screw extrusion over the entire composition range were studied. The sensibility of PHBV to thermal degradation was highlighted, as well as the importance of the interfaces between PLA and PHBV on the rheological behaviour at low frequencies. The differential scanning calorimetry showed that the two polymers are immiscible. Two different types of morphologies (nodular and co-continuous) depending on blend composition have been observed by scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy in reflection. The impact resistance of the PLA/PHBV blends with or without impact modifier was studied and the tensile properties of different blends containing PLA blended with PHBV, Lotader GMA, or PBAT were characterised. The addition of a small amount of dispersed phase in the initially brittle PLA matrix increases considerably its elongation at break. However, the obtained ductile properties decrease as the time between preparation of samples and their mechanical testing increases. A study of the influence of physical aging on the properties of PLA based blends was conducted and a qualitative model was proposed.

Etude de nanocomposites basés sur des alliages PLA/PA11 / Study of nanocomposites based on PLA/PA11 polymer blends

Rasselet, Damien 10 January 2019 (has links)
Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the biobased polymers that generates the most interest, but its thermomechanical properties need to be improved. To do that, the most used and studied methods consist of blending PLA with other polymers or adding nanoscaled mineral fillers (nanoparticles) to get a PLA based nanocomposite. This PhD work is dedicated to the elaboration and properties characterization of nanocomposites based on a filled PLA and polyamide 11 80/20 wt/wt blend. The aim is to obtain a biobased material with improved thermal, mechanical and fire reaction properties by controlling its morphology through the addition of nanoparticles and flame retardants additives. To achieve that, two compatibilization techniques, aiming to improve PLA-PA11 interfacial adhesion, were evaluated. The first one consisted of adding silica nanoparticles. Important changes of the blend morphology and rheological properties were noticed, depending on the localization of the two different silica nanoparticles used into the polymer blend phases. The second one consisted of introducing a reactive multifunctional epoxy copolymer, named Joncryl. The reactivity of this copolymer with PLA and PA11 allowed to compatibilize the blend, leading to a fine morphology and higher mechanical properties compared to those of the pristine blend. Samples of compatibilized blends obtained through this method were processed using FDM additive manufacturing process. A study of the influence of this process on the morphology and mechanical properties obtained for these samples was performed. Finally, a better fire reaction of compatibilized polymer blend with 3%wt Joncryl was obtained by the combined addition of phyllosilicates nanoparticles and flame retardants.

Etude de la miscibilité des polymères par la méthode de coalescence des grains en vue du recyclage des DEEE par rotomoulage / Study of the miscibility of polymers using the sintering method to recycl WEEE polymers by rotomoulding

Aid, Sara 15 December 2017 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to study the miscibility of polymer blends with a view to recycling WEEE polymers by rotomoulding. Indeed, miscibility is a key factor which determines the final properties of polymer blends. The work was divided into two parts. Based on the characterization results of Éco-systèmes WEEE, the choice of materials (PVDF / PMMA) and (ABS / PC) was motivated by the industrial and scientific interest of these two couples. The first part of the work presents an array of experimental methods, ranging from processing to material characterization, with the aim of exploring the miscibility of these mixtures. In particular, the study of the coalescence of the grains made it possible to demonstrate the miscibility of the PVDF / PMMA couple and the partial miscibility of the ABS / PC (coating phenomenon). At the end of this study, the PVDF / PMMA couple was retained as a "model" pair to perform a generalized predictive model of the coalescence between different polymer grains. This model was coupled with a probabilistic parametric analysis to evaluate the effect of the uncertainties of the viscosity, surface tension, relaxation time and grain size measurements on coalescence kinetics. The work ends with a draft of the simulation of the coalescence phenomenon and the coating in the case of miscible and partially miscible polymers respectively

Rheological behavior of PMMA/PS polymer blends compatibilized or not.

Yee, Márcio 23 October 2008 (has links)
In this work, the dynamic behavior of polymethylmetacrylate/polystyrene (PMMA/PS) blends to which P(S-co-MMA) was added was studied. Several blend composition and copolymer concentrations were studied. The rheological behavior of blends was compared to Bousminas[1] and Paliernes generalized[2] models. The relaxation spectra of the blends were also inferred, and the results were analyzed in light of the analysis of Jacobs et al.[4]. The relaxation spectra of the blends with smaller dispersed phase (below 10 wt%) and larger copolymer concentrations (above 0.4 wt%) showed the presence of four relaxation times, two corresponding to the blend phases, F, corresponding to the relaxation of the shape of the dispersed phase of the blend, and , that can be attributed to the relaxation of Marangoni stresses tangential to the interface between the dispersed phase and matrix. The experimental values of F and were used to infer the interfacial tension () and the interfacial complex shear modulus () for the different blends, decreased with increasing copolymer concentration. decreased with increasing blend dispersed phase concentration and decreasing copolymer concentration. The predictions of Paliernes generalized model were found to corroborate the experimental data once the values of and found analyzing the relaxation spectra were used in the calculations. Bousminas model was found to corroborate the data only for larger dispersed phase concentration. The stress relaxation behavior of PMMA/PS blends with or without random copolymer addition, submitted to step shear strain experiments in the linear and nonlinear regime was studied. The effect of blend composition, viscosity ratio and random copolymer was evaluated. All blends presented three relaxation stages, a first relaxation which was attributed to the relaxation of the pure phases, a second one which was characterized by the presence of plateau and a third fast one.

Estudo da influência do teor de acetato de vinila na morfologia e biodegradabilidade de blendas poli(ácido lático)/polietileno-co-acetato de vinila / Study of the influence of vinyl acetate content on the morphology and biodegradability poly(lactic acid)/polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate blends

Moraes, Eduardo Aparecido de 04 December 2017 (has links)
The inadequate disposal of packaging materials has led to a major worldwide concern. The high consumption, together with the short usage time of packaging materials, has created a serious environmental issue. Unlike conventional polymers, poly(lactic acid) or PLA comes from a renewable source and can be degraded by microorganisms (e.g., bacteria and fungi) in the environment. PLA has a great potential for the sustainable development of environmentally friendly materials intended for packaging applications. To do so, however, some of its mechanical properties (e.g., ductility and toughness) must be modified to meet the technical requirement for such applications. A feasible alternative of overcoming these limitations is mechanically blending PLA with a second polymer, producing blends featuring improved properties. In this study, we prepared polymer blends by mixing PLA and the random copolymer poly[(ethylene)-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA) comprising vinyl acetate (VA) contents of 65% (EVA65) and 90% (EVA90). The blends were prepared through interpenetrating co-rotating twin screw extrusion. PLA/EVA blend morphology and miscibility were investigated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic thermomechanical analysis (DMTA). Mechanical properties were determined through tensile, three-point bending, and notched Izod impact strength tests. The influence of VA content on PLA biodegradability was assessed by weight loss measurements as well as tensile tests in specimens submitted to biodegradation in soil, wherein they remained covered for 0, 30, 90, 120, and 150 days. DSC curves and DMTA data showed that the PLA/EVA90 blends presented a single glass transition temperature (Tg), indicating miscibility. On the other hand, the PLA/EVA65 blends presented two Tg as well as marked phase separation, corroborating the immiscibility of all tested fractions. Shifts on the crystallization temperature of PLA are influenced by increased EVA contents in the blends. All blends showed improved flexibility and deformation at break, particularly that comprising 20% EVA65, which presented an elongation at break 350% higher than pristine PLA. The impact strength of the blend comprising 30% EVA65 evidenced a ca. 2400% increase in toughness in comparison with pure PLA. PLA biodegradation rate was reduced by increased EVA contents. EVA90-containing blends displayed greater weight losses than their EVA65-containing counterparts, also revealing the influence of miscibility on PLA biodegradation rate. Nevertheless, after 180 days, all specimens presented weight loss, that is, were biodegraded in soil.

Compatibilização de blenda polimérica de poliamida 6,6/ polietileno de baixa densidade utilizando radiação ionizante de feixe de elétrons / Compatibilization of Polyamide 6.6 and Low Density Polyethylene Polimeric Blend Using Electron Beam Ionizing Radiation.

Feitosa, Marcos Antonio Fernandes 12 January 2009 (has links)
The plastic industry has recognized that mixture of polymers, called polymeric blends, yields new materials with improve properties and better features of those of the polymer blended. In most of the cases, blends are formed by immiscible components presenting separated phases, micro-structures or morphologies. One of the main factors for good mechanical performance is the interfacial adhesion of the blend components. The improvement of miscibility between the polymer components and the enhancement of blend performance is denominated of compatibilization. This compatibilization can be achieved by chemical methods or using ionizing radiation. The present work has as a main objective the study of the effect of the ionizing radiation from electron beam in the compatibilization of the polyamide (PA) 6.6 and low density polyethylene (LDPE) 75%/25% wt blend, in the range of applied doses from 50 to 250 kGy. The compatibilization effect was evaluated by mechanical test, which has shown improvement in the tensile strength and hardness properties and a reduction of the impact resistant. This mechanical behavior can be considered as a combination effect of the cross-linking, induced in the molecular structure on the polymers, and the increase of the miscibility of the blend components. The degree of compatibilization was evaluated by the behavior of the glass transition temperatures (Tg) for the blend components obtained by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) measurements. The results have shown that the values of Tg for PA 6.6 and LDPE get near by 8oC, showing that the ionizing radiation have promoted a compatibilization effect on the irradiated blend.
