Learning Journey as an Educator Ethnography

Alcantar, Seleni 01 January 2019 (has links)
What makes an effective teacher? This is the question I have tried to answer as I developed this ethnographic narrative. What is written here for you to read is an outline of what my experiences have been for the past two years, although it could have been my first year of teaching, but because I set back in the program, I will talk about both my first and second year of teaching. It traces back to the early expectations and hopes to more complex understandings of my students and myself. It has been 19 months since I started writing my ethnography, therefore you will notice my verb tense throughout the whole writing process. There are also new perspectives for each section. The project begins with a reflective piece about my personal educational experiences and my journey to become a teacher. I do wish to warn you that I have included specifically, details about my personal upbringing that may make a few people uncomfortable, but all in all this is who I am and what has helped shaped me through out the years. The work of this ethnography centers on my experience in my current position as an Intern teacher at a high school in Pomona, California. This opens with a study of three focus students who I had the privilege of visiting in their homes. This allowed me to discover who my students truly are and lay a foundation for my teaching goals. It is then followed by a section on the school, classroom, and community environment because this is what helps further analyze what shapes my students and it opens up opportunities to understanding where, how and why my students perform at the level they do. Finally, this project although the majority analytical, it is also very personal. In the last section presented, I reflect on the journey as an educator and what changes can be made to better suit my students. This section allows me to analyze how effective I have been and continue to be as an educator.

Cool Roofs at Pomona College

Steuterman, Jeremiah M 01 May 2012 (has links)
The energy efficiency of a building is directly related to the heat transfer between the building and the outside environment. In order to limit the heat transfer to the building by solar radiation cool roofs have been developed which increase the solar reflectivity of roofs. This report investigates the potential application of high reflectivity coatings to roofs at Pomona College and the energy benefits that could result. Cool roofs are used to address two prevalent environmental concerns: high cooling loads and Urban Heat Islands. These two problems are linked and exhibit the potential micro and mesoscale benefits of reducing roof surface temperature. Cool roofs are part of a larger set of solutions to tackle these two issues and so must be considered in the context of the multitude of other mitigation measures. This report discusses the ways in which a cool roof affects a building envelope and Urban Heat Islands, and what this means in the context of Southern California and Pomona College. Due to the already energy efficient clay tile on most Pomona roofs, the gains from reflective coatings would be limited. However there are several flat roofs on campus that could benefit from the application of a reflective coating. These benefits would come in the form of cooling energy cost reduction to individual buildings. These benefits would not be so drastic as to necessitate immediately applying reflective coatings, but flat roofs should be updated with an energy efficient coating as part of regularly scheduled resurfacing

Solar energy research and development in California

Close, Brett T. January 2007 (has links)
The energy crisis of 2001, high prices for gas and electricity and worries of climate change have caused a growing awareness about energy issues in California. The problems are clear. This paper looks at the next step of finding and implementing solutions. In this case the contribution that solar photovoltaic and solar thermal generation could make toward solving the problem. This paper looks at technological change, the current state of solar energy research, current government policies on solar energy, and finally makes policy recommendations to meet the stated problem.

Entretanto, a linhagem HIV-A a partir do 14 dia de infecção apresentou total contenção , embora a LIV-A ainda tenha recuperado bactérias no fígado no 21 dia. Entretanto, ambas... / The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of the macrophage activity and antibody production on experimental infection of Leptospira pomona in mice, selected genetically for high (H) or low (L) humoral immune response. To evaluate the macrophage activity, assays were used to determine oxygen and nitrogen intermediate reactives. Also was investigated the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF- .), specific antibodies, recovery of leptospires in the kidneys and liver, histological lesions by hematoxilin-eosin technique and determination of leptospires antigens in tissues by immunohistochemistry. The results showed a smaller recovery of microorganism from the analyzed compartments to the LIV-A lineage. However, the HIV-A lineage showed total contention from the 14th day post-infection, although LIV-A had still bacteria in the liver at 21th day post-infection. The immune response against pomona serovar in those lineages, was characterized as high production of antibodies, mainly in later periods of infectious process. The production of oxygen and nitrogen intermediate reactives, also contributed to L. pomona elimination for two lineages, being the H2O2 production an important factor in the HIV-A lineage and NO in the LIV-A lineage, mainly at the latest post-inoculation periods, the same occurring in relation to TNF- . Intense renal lesions occurred at periods that were larger number of isolated leptospires by culture technique. Meantime, it had persistence of tissue alterations in the LIV-A lineage, even at no leptospires recovery periods. The imunohistochemistry technique showed more sensitive in relation to the cultivation technique. However, both were good techniques to agent identification on those lineages. The results suggest those lineages could represent an important model to investigation of animal pathogenesis and immune response against the varied serovares of leptospires.

Biophilic Design at Pomona College: An Analysis of the New Sontag and Pomona Residence Halls

Hasse, John W 01 May 2012 (has links)
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for New Construction (or LEED-NC) has become one of the most commonly used green building standards during the turn of the 21st century. While many champion LEED-NC, certain architects and academics believe that its low-environmental impact design approach toward green building isolates people from nature and thus cannot achieve sustainable development over the long-term. Pomona College’s green buildings, including its newest LEED Platinum certified Sontag and Pomona Residence Halls, exemplify this fact, as their designs fail to communicate their sustainable goals or inspire sustainable behavior. By examining the LEED-NC standards, the history of environmental conservation, Modern architecture, biophilia, and the Living Building Challenge, this thesis seeks to provide recommendations for how Pomona College can alter its existing green buildings as well as improve its green building policies for future projects so that its built environment better fosters positive human-nature interactions.

Gang membership, drug sales, violence, and guns

Gonzalez Dominquez, Jose Fabian 01 January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine three factors relating to drug arrests using secondary data analysis. First, ethnic characteristics of a dealer were analyzed according to the location from where they sold their product. Next, possible factors associated with a police officer using force at the time of a drug arrest were also analyzed. Finally, factors associated with a gun being present at the time of a drug arrest were also analyzed.

The Wash: Uncovering Pomona College's Hidden Landscape

Vorva, Madison G, McAllister, Nia P, Pettis, Maria R 01 January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this capstone project is to tell a place-based story about an often forgotten part of campus: the Wash. Beginning as a likely Tongvan campsite, the Wash, after donation to Pomona College as “Blanchard Park” underwent a series of land-use changes. Originally, a designated green space, its present-day composition includes athletic fields, the organic farm and the historic remnant oak grove. Throughout time the value of the Wash changed with its differing caretakers and inhabitants. To bring attention to this evolving landscape and to inform more sustainable and equitable land use in the future, our project aims to acknowledge past narratives about this place, take stock of its present ecological significance and recommend best practices going forward. We accomplished this by putting together a history of the Wash using indigenous knowledge, archival information, biological surveys and GIS.

The Use of Tape Recordings in Teaching Local History

Rickett, Ruth Bates 01 January 1963 (has links)
The problem of the thesis is to develop rationale for the teaching of local history in the schools through the use of recorded documentary statements by eyewitnesses to local events. As illustrative of this mode of teaching local history, a series of recordings are made in which the residents of the Pomona, California, area who were eyewitnesses to the local events or who could relate reliable hearsay about the history of Pomona are interviewed. A research methodology for the taking, editing, and cataloguing of these tape recordings for school use is developed and executed.
