Ima deshō : the vacuum of immediacy in contemporary Japanese literature and popular culture

Cervelli, Filippo January 2017 (has links)
The value of literature in the contemporary age is a controversial issue. The challenge posed by the interpretation of this era is expressed by the provocative remarks of critics such as Karatani Kōjin and Suzuki Sadami maintaining that after the 80s modern "pure" literature died (History and Repetition, 2012; The Concept of "Literature" in Japan, 2006). Reading Karatani and Suzuki's comments as merely provocative, signifying that a form of literature has died, this study enquires into how literature (and the arts) have changed and found new ways of expression after the historical break of 1989. The dissertation offers immediacy as a possible answer. Immediacy is a theme, a literary device stressing the present moment submerging clear notions of past and present. The precondition for immediacy is an ideological vacuum, experienced by characters across age groups and genders, where they do not share social ideologies or collective purposes. In this isolation, they concentrate only on their local realities, on what they perceive directly (physically and emotionally), acting quickly and repeatedly in the absence of critical thought. The constant action is often carried out in response to corporeal stimuli, specifically violence and sex, that grant immediate gratification in the vacuum. However, at the core characters indulging in immediacy long for inter-personal connections. Building a community based on critical thought and mutual understanding is the solution to escape from immediacy. The dissertation explores manifestations of immediacy in contemporary Japanese literature and popular culture (manga and anime) published or broadcast between 1995 and 2011. Through the analyses of cultural theories, literature by Takahashi Genichirō, Taguchi Randy and Hirano Keiichirō, and influential works in manga and anime (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Psycho-Pass and Shingeki no kyojin), it shows the theme's relevance and discusses how it contributes to the broader fields of contemporary Japanese literature and popular culture. By doing so, the dissertation also provides a study of the current artistic panorama in Japan, one that is often neglected critically, but that speaks of its culture with great force and imagination.

January 2017 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The present research results from the established research about the social trajectory of Cornélio Pires (1884-1958). Writer, musician, lecturer, folklorist, director, poet, journalist, Cornélio Pires was a multiple artist and sought to treat the countryside culture in its diversity. His main works in the most different media in which he acted worked from the perspective of a militant regionality-national about the rural and the countryside's communities. From the analysis of the creative imagination of the individual in the constitution of his strategies of subjectivization, that is, of the elements that composed their process of individuation and socialization, aims to understand the indissoluble connections between individual and society. By using the biographical perspective articulated to the ethnographic procedure, more than knowing the life of Cornélio Pires, this study seeks to reveal the plots, the entanglements, the interactions with people, policies, cultures, institutions expressed in their social trajectory. It is only from this apprehension that it will be possible to understand his aspirations, behaviors and attitudes in the civilizing process of the São Paulo modernity. Chronology is an ally, but not the ultimate end of the research because the focus is on understanding the process, the senses and meanings learned during the experience ofscientific research on an ordinary individual. Much of Cornélio Pires's life occurred in a temporality engendered by antinomies such as countryside and city, archaic and modern, rural and urban, primitive and civilized, hillbilly and cosmopolitan. His position in the face of this convulsive reality was precisely in the inter-place of modernity. The social place occupied by Cornélio Pires was, precisely, the interstices of the civilizational process, in which ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

January 2013 (has links)
Além disso, acreditamos que a autovalorização de uma nova geração, ouvinte de rap, mas que tomou contato com a produção da cantoria nordestina, busca nessas formas de tradição oral sua identificação enquanto sujeito brasileiro, filho de várias raças e atravessado por múltiplos discursos / Abstract: Considering the aesthetic ideal that music represents in our country, this work demonstrates through the enunciation analysis, the values transmitted by subjects that expressed themselves in these speeches. Observing the plurality that composes the Brazilian popular culture, we investigated the enunciative elements constituents of two specific types of discursive genres linked to artistic expression that circulates in particular contexts, but proposing a dialogue of their social and discursive relations inside a situation of production. Focusing on discursive elements, between verbal and melodic language of these manifestations, we discussed the factors that are in the limits of language and its relation to the social. Our objective was to reflect on the speech that constitutes Rap and Repente songs, as well as the dialogue that exists between these musical genres, considering their language, that in Brazil has social influence and representation. We use the analytical categories of the Bakhtin Circle, appropriating of concepts that address language as interaction between subjects in some context. To investigate the relevance of our hypothesis of dialogue between genres, our corpus consisted by artists authors of rap and repente songs: João Paraibano and Sebastião Dias; Kamau; Zé Brown; RAPadura; O Rappa; Thaíde; Caju and Castanha. At the end this research, we concluded that the dialogue hypothesis is confirmed, considering the factors as the character of absorption of this musical genres, provided that (re)creations. Furthermore, we believe that the self-worth of a new generation of rap listeners that have contact to the production of Northeastern Singing, search in these forms of oral tradition a identity as Brazilian person, son of various races and crossed by multiple discourses / Mestre

This study has evaluated the use of these herbs to promote and recover health in communities which are monitored by the health teams of the Family Health Program in Rio Grande, RS. Their uses, how knowledge about these herbs is transmitted, the most used ones, their manipulation and preparation, their popular indication compared to literature, the first action taken in case of sickness in the family, and their uses associated with allopathic medication, were investigated. Ninety five percent out of 360 interviewees reported that they use medicinal herbs. In this study, the knowledge about medicinal herbs was taught mostly by mothers to their daughters (55.68%), or by their grandmothers (19.82%). Thirteen herbs were used by more than 50% of the interviewees: Egletes viscosa L. (88.62%), Mikania glomerata (81.87%), Foeniculum vulgare (77.84%), Peumus boldus molina (77.55%), Malva silvestris L. (72.88%), Plantago tomentosa L. (71.26%), (68.22%), Lippi alba B. (67.25%), Cymbopogon citratus (66.18%), Baccharis triptera (63.63%), Pimpinella anisium (60.64%), Pimpinella anisium (58.53%), and Mentha (53.50%). Considering these herbs, most are used against illnesses in the digestive tract, specially, Peumus boldus molina, Egletes viscosa, Foeniculum vulgare, Baccharis triptera and the Mentha. To alleviate pain, infection, and inflammation, both Malva silvestris L. and Plantago tomentosa L. were suggested. Mikania glomerata was the herb most interviewees suggested in case of respiratory diseases. In case of emotional instability, Pimpinella anisium and Cymbopogon citratus were suggested. The use of teas made of medicinal herbs was mentioned by 68.03% of the interviewees as being the first step taken in case of sickness in the family. The use of these herbs associated with allopathic medication was mentioned by only 29.61% of the interviewees. These data show us that medicinal herbs play a very important role in the prevention and promotion of health in this community and that knowledge about them is transmitted mainly from one generation to another. There is some connection between popular knowledge and practice, and prescriptions found in literature. Aiming at building a public policy for medicinal herbs, this study offers subsidies so that it can be carried out in our city. This Thesis presents a study about traditional masks of the popular Brazilian culture and its' appropriation to the technical and creative work of the actor. The research was focused on the universe of the masked performers of the Folias de Reis in Fidalgo and Matozinhos, Minas Gerais. The research first impulse that resulted in this Thesis began with the verification that even if there are a great amount of masks in diverse Brazilian popular culture performances such as Folias de Reis, they are rarely systematically used on theatre performances. The purpose was to verify how the "ways to perform masks" and the "ways of thinking masking" in the Brazilian popular culture performances could contribute to the field of research on acting theatre mask. In order to do this, I present a dialogue between the Folias de Reis? traditional knowledge and the formal knowledge of the performing arts and anthropology fields of studies. By presenting such a dialogue, my intentions are to reflect about questions related to tradition and creation, art and devotion, agency and symbolization, having the purpose to establish points of approximation and distance between those universes. It is attached to this Thesis a DVD with two documentaries about the mainly studied groups, images of Brazilian Folias de Reis and Portuguese and Spanish performance masks / Doutorado / Artes Cenicas / Doutor em Artes

The present work has as an objective to present the dance as art memory, memory held within the bodies that dance, and for this purpose the folk popular dances of Goiás were reconstructed; these popular â?¿forgottenâ?? dances take place only in the memory of the dwellers of Santa Cruz, a small town in the state of Goiás. The focus is the perspective of the oral history, with prior use of oral sources and the images records. The interrelation with the community fl ourishes as a mandatory condition to apprehend the manners, the stories, the movements, the drama that mark their daily routine and its art. These dances linger in the memory of the elders; there are no systematic records, they are kept alive in their oral tradition, more particularly in the bodiesâ?¿ memory, since they havenâ?¿t danced them for ages. Were dances learned in the local parties, carried through in the farms of the region. Between the mutirões and pagodes, these dances and chanting had the intention of creating a collectivizing experiences, anchoring themselves in the exchanges and the affective, social and cultural relations. Throughout the years they had been forbidden and/or rejected by capitalist modernity. Our methodology involves registering the long lived lore experience by the images and the language written, building a network of meaningful information. The intention is to look to the body as a multiple text made of history, lore, memory, culture and art; it is the various dialogs and dances in the fi eld of polissitemic knowledge that matters. They are tyrannies and poetry inscribed in the daily routine and in dance. The theory referential points of this work dialogs with various authors such as Portelli, Olga Von Simson, Walter Benjamin, among others / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutor em Educação

Costa, Noélio Martins 15 June 2005 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Noelio seg.pdf: 660641 bytes, checksum: 4872c336c05ecb1ce5e274698e31ccac (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-06-15 / FAPEAM - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas / The current research work consists of leading in the analysis of music popularly designated as brega that characterizes itself as predominant musical style in the north area. We search to report historically and to contemplate concerning the multiple interpretations regarding the affective relationships contained in this sound art, taking into account the everyday life of those who live that type of music. This research seeks to give themes to histories that take place at bars, at small and big night clubs, at the beginning or end of night, in the outlying and noble neighborhoods, finally in varied shades that surpass the simple taste of hearing or dancing the tacky rhythm, tending as backdrop men and women´s relationships. The temporary cutting worked will be decades between 1980 and 1990, suitable for the several singer´s emergence, cd, requests of listeners on the radios, shows and interviews for newspapers of great load. However, when needed, there won´t be obstructions for temporary retreats, since the brega music is built as a derivation of music of the 60´s and 70´s, as Elvis Presley´s rock or the youth´s singers movement in Brazil like Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos and Vanderleia for instance. In the approach of the theme, we noticed how much the songs and the alcoholic drink are motivation factors for people meet themselves, drink and tell themselves all their stories. We understand that this thematic itself could be unfolded for the study of several themes, such as: musicality, gender, history, sexuality, culture and party. We don´t want to do the History of the brega music here, that´s not the intention. We want to explore other possibilities that music gives us to analyse how the subjects live and how they interact with that kind of music, to see how that music known as tacky has also something to transmit, it has history. The brega music captures influences brought not only for its faithful followers, but it involves a range of elements culturally built by the whole society. The woman, as the main theme of those musical narratives, becomes the focus of contradictory feelings in the lyrics of those songs. Love and hate, for instance, are close, fine feelings that in the brega music are passed in a hard way, without many subterfuges. Besides the lyrics of the music, they also constitute investigation sources, iconographical, bibliographical material and oral statements. In this last case, it was searched to talk directly with the subject of the study, men and women that weave their feelings through a musical style.

The modern Greek popular theatre as a means of Paideia of the Greek people, from the establishment of the Greek State until today

Galanis, Evangelos 04 June 2014 (has links)
D.Litt et Phil. (Greek) / This is a study of how, when and why the popular theatre influenced the character, behavior and the formation of the Greek people’s culture from the establishment of the Greek state up until today. The thesis attempts to fill a gap in current literature as to date there has been no study dealing with the influence exerted by the popular theatre as a whole in shaping the culture of the Greek people. The first chapter captures the historical and social context of the time period within which the thesis unfolds. The second chapter refers to existing theories and studies related to the thesis’ topic. Their importance is twofold as a number of them assist in providing answers to issues which are relevant to the popular theatre and its different forms and other studies and theories will be used as a basis upon which to complete the study. The third chapter presents the historical progress of the popular theatre from the establishment of the Greek state up until today. The major milestones are defined and the conditions and events that influenced the popular theatre are identified. The chapter also outlines the history of urban theatre within the Greek state. Finally, the chapter identifies the relationships between the urban and the popular theatre, namely their manner of communication and mutual influence as well as the means of information exchange, and attempts to answer the question of whether and when the popular theatre influenced the evolution of the urban theatre and vice versa. The fourth chapter identifies the interactions between popular theater and the Greek society. The chapter relates the evolution of popular theater with the simultaneous evolution of Greek society and explores the relationships between the two. It examines individual parameters defining the relationship between the formal education within the country and popular theater. The chapter also identifies the role that the popular theater had in the dispute over the language issue, which was one of the most serious issues that concerned the intellects of the nation before and after liberation. The fifth chapter presents the most important primary forms of popular theater such as “the day of the midwife”, “the court”, “the skylodeftera” and others, following as far as possible the calendar year.

Configurations identitaires dans Cascalho et Além dos marimbus de Herberto Sales / Identity configurations in Cascalho and in Alem dos marimbas by Herberto Sales

Garcia, Frédéric Robert 18 December 2013 (has links)
Enfin, nous mettons en avant les différentes représentations de la nature et la dimension épique des romans / Centered on the works of Baian writer Herbert Sales, this dissertation aims to analyze the founding elements of the universe of Chapada Diamantina as identity construction of the individual and his environment. We emphasize the importance of the study of the identity in the Brazilian literature, specifically the literature of Bahia through the analysis of the two novels that constitute the corpus of this research : Cascalho and Além dos marimbus. This study aims to demonstrate how dialogue is etablished between literature and other social discourses, from an interdisciplinary perspective. We highlight the place of the author in the context of Brazilian literature : the " literary project of Herbert Sales ". We analyse the social forms of identity constructions and their relation to the power, collusion and reciprocity of the state in these interrelationships, and how the support network to "coronelato" is articulated towards its legitimating project. We also focused on the identity constructions through the important contribution of orality, myths and popular beliefs in the local culture. We address the representations of territory in the fictional universe of Chapada diamantina, as a crossing space of diverse cultures, “territory of passage”, which embodies both the Eldorado and hell on earth. Finally, we highlight the different representations of nature and its epic dimension in the novels under analysis

"What you need, Eddie, is another remedial reading class": a semiotic analysis of representations of literacy in popular school film

Doctor of Philosophy / Curriculum and Instruction Programs / F. Todd Goodson / This study examines representations of literacy and literacy pedagogy in films about school. Grounded in research traditions of textual analysis and cultural studies, the present study is a semiotic analysis of critical scenes in a study corpus comprised of key scenes from fifteen school films from the 1930s to present. Films were selected for inclusion in the study corpus based on five criteria: setting of the film in a K-12 school, teacher as a central character of the film, a school film with a serious message, a film that includes at least one literary event, and a film that is available for rent in the United States. Key scenes (those that embody the film's stance toward literacy and literacy pedagogy) were selected by an inter-rater group of veteran educators and researchers. A semiotic analysis of the texts determined what denotations, connotations, and myths exist in the following: o Components of literacy o Expressions of literacy o Importance of literacy o Role of the teacher o Role of the student o Role of the school The analysis was conducted through a textual study of the dialogue, basic cinematic techniques, and the semiotic codes of body codes, commodity codes, and behavioral codes found in the critical scenes to identify emerging themes. During the open coding stage, data revealed twelve categories that contributed to the four axial codes of Self, Beyond Self, Critical Connections, and Representations of Literacy. The four axial codes contributed to three different themes that emerged in the representations of literacy in popular school film: internal versus external forces, traditional versus non- traditional pedagogy, and traditional representations of literacy versus new literacies. A grounded theory based upon the research data proposes a symbiotic relationship between educational policy and the portrayal of literacy pedagogy in serious school film. This qualitative study brings to light the potential impact of media and popular culture on education and literacy pedagogy.
