Abstract: This work describes several problems related to user interface development that currently affect the industry of portable devices. We present a brief comparison between existing declarative languages based on XML related to user interface specification. We propose the use of XForms and CSS as an alternative to the current approach. In order to validate the proposal, a model for the user interface is presented, based on existing cellular phones on the market. We show how XForms and CSS could be used as user interface definition languages for the portable devices based on that model. It is included an architecture proposal and the required extensions to the W3C XForms recommendations. We conclude the feasibility of this proposal based on the small number of extensions required for that. / Mestrado / Engenharia de Computação / Mestre em Ciência da Computação

Mixed-initiative multimedia for mobile devices: design of a semantically relevant low latency system for news video recommendations

Lee, Jeannie Su Ann 12 July 2010 (has links)
The increasing ubiquity of networked mobile devices such as cell phones and PDAs has created new opportunities for the transmission and display of multimedia content. However, any mobile device has inherent resource constraints: low network bandwidth, small screen sizes, limited input methods, and low commitment viewing. Mobile systems that provide information display and access thus need to mitigate these various constraints. Despite progress in information retrieval and content recommendation, there has been less focus on issues arising from a network-oriented and mobile perspective. This dissertation investigates a coordinated design approach to networked multimedia on mobile devices, and considers the abovementioned system perspectives. Within the context of accessing news video on mobile devices, the goal is to provide a cognitively palatable stream of videos and a seamless, low-latency user experience. Mixed-initiative---a method whereby intelligent services and users collaborate efficiently to achieve the user's goals, is the cornerstone of the system design and integrates user relevance feedback with a content recommendation engine and a content- and network-aware video buffer prefetching technique. These various components have otherwise been considered independently in other prior system designs. To overcome limited interactivity, a mixed-initiative user interface was used to present a sequence of news video clips to the user, along with operations to vote-up or vote-down a video to indicate its relevance. On-screen gesture equivalents of these operations were also implemented to reduce user interface elements occupying the screen. Semantic relevancy was then improved by extracting and indexing the content of each video clip as text features, and using a Na"ive Bayesian content recommendation strategy that harnessed the user relevance feedback to tailor the subsequent video recommendations. With the system's knowledge of relevant videos, a content-aware video buffer prefetching scheme was then integrated, using the abovementioned feedback to lower the user perceived latency on the client-end. As an information retrieval system consists of many interacting components, a client-server video streaming model is first developed for clarity and simplicity. Using a CNN news video clip database, experiments were then conducted using this model to simulate user scenarios. As the aim of improving semantic relevancy sometimes opposes user interface tools for interactivity and user perceived latency, a quantitative evaluation was done to observe the tradeoffs between bandwidth, semantic relevance, and user perceived latency. Performance tradeoffs involving semantic relevancy and user perceived latency were then predicted. In addition, complementary human user subjective tests are conducted with actual mobile phone hardware running on the Google Android platform. These experiments suggest that a mixed-initiative approach is helpful for recommending news video content on a mobile device for overcoming the mobile limitations of user interface tools for interactivity and client-end perceived latency. Users desired interactivity and responsiveness while viewing videos, and were willing to sacrifice some content relevancy in order gain lower perceived latency. Recommended future work includes expanding the content recommendation to incorporate viewing data from a large population, and the creation of a global hybrid content-based and collaborative filtering algorithm for better results. Also, based on existing user behaviour, users were reluctant to provide more input than necessary. Additional user experiments can be designed to quantify user attention and interest during video watching on a mobile device, and for better definition and incorporation of implicit user feedback.

Low-Power Audio Input Enhancement for Portable Devices

Yoo, Heejong 13 January 2005 (has links)
With the development of VLSI and wireless communication technology, portable devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), pocket PCs, and mobile phones have gained a lot of popularity. Many such devices incorporate a speech recognition engine, enabling users to interact with the devices using voice-driven commands and text-to-speech synthesis. The power consumption of DSP microprocessors has been consistently decreasing by half about every 18 months, following Gene's law. The capacity of signal processing, however, is still significantly constrained by the limited power budget of these portable devices. In addition, analog-to-digital (A/D) converters can also limit the signal processing of portable devices. Many systems require very high-resolution and high-performance A/D converters, which often consume a large fraction of the limited power budget of portable devices. The proposed research develops a low-power audio signal enhancement system that combines programmable analog signal processing and traditional digital signal processing. By utilizing analog signal processing based on floating-gate transistor technology, the power consumption of the overall system as well as the complexity of the A/D converters can be reduced significantly. The system can be used as a front end of portable devices in which enhancement of audio signal quality plays a critical role in automatic speech recognition systems on portable devices. The proposed system performs background audio noise suppression in a continuous-time domain using analog computing elements and acoustic echo cancellation in a discrete-time domain using an FPGA.

Moreover, that possess an interface that makes possible: the visualization of an equipment network, the remote access to the equipment through virtual HMIs, and the generation of graphs of sampled data. So, the studies carried on handheld computers, its characteristics and programming tools, industrial networks, the Modbus protocol and the monitoring, the parameterization and the supervision of industrial equipment are presented. Moreover, the characteristic of two equipment used for the development of this work, the CFW-09 frequency inverter manufactured by WEG Automation and the power regulator GRMP-03 manufactured by Grameyer Ltda, are shown. Regarding the practical activities, the implementation of a set of classes in Java language using the SuperWaba platform is presented and its use in the project and development of softwares for parameterization and monitoring of the CFW-09 and the GRMP-03, called SuperDrivePalm and GRMPalm, respectively. Also, it is presented the creation of a supervision module for industrial equipments that can be added to those softwares. The gotten results show that the creation of a multiplatform software for the considered ends is viable, but the time behavior, measured during the practical tests of the SuperDrivePalm and the supervision module, shows that its still necessity to optimize some algorithms and that the use of a more specific virtual machine for the new PDA microprocessors can take performance improvements.

Kobs, Fabio Fernando 23 February 2017 (has links)
This research had as general objective to raise the possible effects using the mobile devices by adolescents mainly in family life and learning. It was developed in a group of students, parents and teachers of two high schools, one public, located in Curitiba, Paraná state, and another private, located in the city of São Bento do Sul, Santa Catarina state. To carry out the study, the specific objectives were: i) to get up the probable benefits and the probable risks arising from the use of mobile devices; ii) investigate the variables with the potential to alter the adolescents' life in the family and school; and iii) analyze the possible effect of mobile devices on adolescents, considering their family life and school performance. The research, as to the nature and the practical purpose, was descriptive, and from the point of view of its purpose, was predominantly explanatory; the study used the conception of the survey in the form of approach of the problem, and the methodology used for the Treatment was of mixed methods. The research employed stratified sampling and intentional sampling; and for each stratum the simple random sampling was used. The application of the questionnaires in the public high school was for 85 students, 24 parents and 9 teachers; and the private high school went to 76, 26 and 11 respectively. The study indicated that the effects of mediation of mobile devices largely converge on certain negative aspects rather than on positive aspects. The main benefits were: use for research; leisure; communication; video lesson learning; access to information and sharing of educational content. Particularly about the risks arising from the intensity and the way in which mobile devices are used, such as the tendency of the devices to arouse the sedentary lifestyle and the risks related to health especially of adolescents, related to posture, vision, hearing and sleep. In addition, there are risks with the radiation emitted by the mobile devices and with the incorrect discard of the mobile devices in disuse. Still, the study pointed out that a greater use of mobile devices, it was reflected in a slight reduction in the grade, motivated by the poor use of devices in the teaching-learning process.
