Determination Of Susceptibility To Intergranular Corrosion Of Uns 31803 Type Duplex Stainless Steel By Electrochemical Reactivation Technique

Arikan, Mehmet Emin 01 August 2008 (has links) (PDF)
In the present work the effect of isothermal ageing treatment on the microstructure and on the localized corrosion resistance of a duplex stainless steel (DSS) was investigated. Specimens taken from a hot rolled cylindrical duplex stainless bar with 22% Cr grade were solution annealed at 1050&deg / C and then sensitization heat treatments were conducted at 650, 725 and 800&deg / C with duration ranging from 100 to 31622 min. The microstructural changes were examined by the light optical microscopy (LOM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD technique and EDS analysis were used for microstructural evolution. Double Loop Electrochemical Potentiodynamic Reactivation (DLEPR) and standard weight loss immersion acid tests were performed in order to determine the degree of sensitization (DOS) to intergranular corrosion. The surfaces remained after the DLEPR test and the weight loss immersion test were also examined to observe the attack locations and their relationship with the chromium depleted zones. The degree of sensitization is measured by determining the ratio of the maximum current generated by the reactivation (reverse) scan to that of the anodic (forward) scan, (Ir/Ia) x 100. Ir is very small (less than 10-5 A/cm2) for solution annealed samples at 1050&deg / C for 1 hr and those aged at 650&deg / C for 100 and 316 min after the solution heat treatment, with the Ir/Ia ratios of 0.027634%, 0.033428% and 0.058928% respectively. Hence these samples were considered as unsensitized and their microstructure was composed of primary ferrite and austenite. However, Ir increased to values as high as 10-2 A/cm2 and even approached Ia for all samples aged for other temperatures and times, associated with high Ir/Ia ratios. The increased degree of sensitization can be attributed to stronger effect of chromium and molybdenum depleted areas. The microstructure was composed of primary ferrite and austenite including also sigma phase and the secondary austenite that would be responsible for the localized chromium impoverishment. The time required for sensitization was shorter in samples aged at higher temperatures. Accordingly ageing times of 1000 min at 725&deg / C and of 316 min at 800&deg / C were sufficient, whereas times longer than 10000 min was needed to achieve a sensitized structure at 650&deg / C.

Resistência à corrosão intergranular do aço inoxidável ferrítico UNS S43000: avaliação por método de reativação eletroquímica, efeito de tratamento isotérmico e mecanismo de sensitização. / Resistance of irregular corrosion of UNS S43000 ferritic stainless steel: evaluate for eletrochemical potentiodynamic test, effect of heat treatment and sensitization mechanism.

Carlos Augusto Serna-Giraldo 29 June 2006 (has links)
Ferritic stainless steels are prone to intergranular corrosion following quick cooling from 950°C. The explanation based on chromium impoverishment near the carbides and/or nitrides precipitated in the grain boundaries is the most accepted to describe the observations. This work study the effects of heat treatments on the resistance to intergranular corrosion of the UNS S43000 ferritic stainless steel, using the Double Loop Electrochemical Potentiodynamic Reactivation test (DL-EPR). Specimens have been solution annealed at 1200oC followed by isothermical holding at temperatures between 500°C and 700°C, for times of 5min up to 16h. The DL-EPR test was made in a 0,5M H2SO4 solution using scan rate of 1,67 mV/s. The specimens were observed by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope after DLEPR test, Practices W and X (ASTM A763) and metallographic etch with Vilella reagent. Different degrees of sensitization were obtained for different isothermal holding time. X rays diffraction of extracted precipitates identified chromium nitrides and chromium carbides, Cr2N and Cr23C6. The temperatures of 550°C and 600°C produced two maxima in the curves of degree of sensitization as function of time; the process was named double sensitization. From the results of degree of sensitization DL-EPR, microstructural examination and X rays diffraction, this work proposes the following mechanism to explain double sensitization: (1st stage) during cooling from the solution annealing temperature there is grain boundary precipitation of chromium rich phases; (2nd stage) the isothermal treatments produce a fine grain boundary precipitation of Cr2N on the precipitates formed in the 1st stage; (3rd stage) increasing the time, these precipitates are dissolved, allowing for a (4th stage) new grain boundary precipitation of Cr2N e Cr23C6; finally (5th stage) there is growth, coalescence and recovery. Total recovery of intergranular corrosion resistance was achieved, isothermically at 650°C for times longer than 20min and at 700°C for times longer then 5min. Precipitation, sensitization and recovery are controlled by diffusion of chromium in ferrite. This conclusion was based on analysis of solution of Fick’s second law and Arrhenius plots constructed with DL-EPR data and microstructural observations. The calculus of the experimental energy of activation for precipitation produced a value of 255kJ/mol (energy of activation for chromium 7 diffusion in the ferrite reported by Arai, Takeda and Arata (1987) and Wolfe and Paxton (1964) is 219kJ/mol).

Hodnocení elektrochemických charakteristik tvářených hořčíkových slitin typu Mg-Al-Zn / Evaluation of electrochemical properties of wrought Mg-Al-Zn type magnesium alloys

Slouková, Karolína January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this master’s thesis is electrochemical characteristics evaluation of magnesium alloys. The theoretical part describes the properties of magnesium and its alloys and their corrosion characteristics. In the experimental part are presented results of corrosion resistance measurement of two types of wrought magnesium alloys. It was AZ31 and AZ61 magnesium alloys, which were measured in Hank’s solutions with addition of ions Ca2+ and Mg2+ (SBF+) and without addition of the ions (SBF). The solution temperature during the measurement was 37 ± 1 °C. The experiments were used electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic tests using linear polarization (LP). EIS measurements were done in times of 5 minutes, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 168 hours. Potentiodynamic tests were only short-term and they started after 5 minutes of stabilization. Both methods were used for measuring the electrochemical characteristics of polished and ground surface of the samples. The most important measurement results were polarization resistance, corrosion potential and corrosion current density. The electrochemical measurements are used to estimate the chemical composition influence and alloy’s structure of the corrosion resistance.

A comparative study on twostandardised electrochemicalmethods with emphasis the effectof microstructure and inclusionson pitting corrosion on duplexstainless steel

Jafari, Khadijeh January 2016 (has links)
Duplex stainless steel (DSS) that developed in the 1930’s is a type of steel that consists of bothaustenite and ferrite phases in an almost equal proportion. It inherits properties of both ferriticand austenitic stainless steel and so it has good mechanical and corrosion resistance propertiesthat makes it suitable material in different industries with aggressive environment. There aredifferent approaches that used to evaluate the susceptibility of stainless steels to pitting corrosionlike Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) and electrochemical methodologies. In thisstudy, focus is on the potentiodynamic (AL 101 5170) and potentiostatic (ASTM G150) testmethods as laboratory evaluations in which standard DSS (2205) is exposed to the differentchloride concentrations 0.1 M and 1 M respectively. In these methods parameters like PittingPotential (Ep) and Critical Pitting Temperature (CPT) can be measured respectively and used topredict the susceptibility of DSS to pitting corrosion. DSS owes its good corrosion resistance tothe oxide film that protects the metal from corrosion. Pitting can be initiated as a result of anyheterogeneities on the metal surface which act as a passive film defect like non-metallicinclusions and intermetallic precipitations such as sigma phase when metal is exposed toaggressive environment and high temperature. The aim of the present work is to make acomparison between two electrochemical methods besides finding how inclusions andmicrostructure can have impact on their results and on pitting corrosion. The results of theexperiment shows that there is a positive linear relation only in longitudinal direction betweenCPT and Ep. Also, among two test methods only ASTM G150 can detect sigma phase existence(<3%). Based on investigations in this experiment, inclusion characteristics such as numberdensity and composition has compatible results in both methods so that samples with big sizeinclusions (>8 μm) have negative effect on corrosion resistance and in terms of composition, samples with nitride inclusions has lower CPT and Ep compared with those with only oxide oroxide/sulfide inclusions. It is also discovered that phase arrangement is not the same in allspecimens that produced by different production methods and samples with finer phases havehigher CPT values in both longitudinal and transvers directions. However, this shape ofmicrostructure only affect the Ep in longitudinal directions but not transvers.

Etude multi-échelle des mécanismes d'élaboration de revêtements d'alliage zinc-nickel à base d'électrolytes alcalins : germination, complexation et structures cristallines / Multi-scale approach of alkaline zinc-nickel electroplating mechanisms : nucleation, complexation and crystallographic structure

Fedi, Baptiste 17 March 2016 (has links)
The present work aims to deepen the understanding of the mechanisms of zinc-nickelelectrodeposition in alkaline baths. Zinc-nickel deposits containing between 12% and 16%nickel known for their anti-corrosion performance. Complexing agents are required toobtain soluble and reactive nickel forms, and to stabilize the electrolytes. A study ofthe complexing mechanisms has improved the understanding of their respective role andbehavior, and their influence on the stability and the morphology and crystalline structureof the coatings obtained. The crystalline phases of electroplated zinc-nickel alloys in therange from 1% to 20% nickel content were quantified by deconvolution of potentiodynamicoxidation curves and XRD. This approach has led to a precise mapping of the alloyphases obtained as a function of the nickel content. The thermal stability of the differentphases has also been evaluated and quantified by this method. The formulation of theelectrolytes and the process parameters may modify the kinetics of coating germination. Afundamental study of the mechanisms of germination by chronoamperometry coupled witha parametric identification allows the quantification of parameter evolution in relation tonucleation phenomenon of simple elements. The study of alloy germination has shownthat decomplexing reactions are able to modify nucleation kinetics, without achieving acomplete comprehensive modeling.

Several techniques are used to prevent or remedy corrosion in the different materials it affects. Among them, the use of organic or inorganic inhibitors has been widely used. Thus, in this thesis were synthesized 34 heterocyclic compounds, 18 chlorides of 1,3,4-thiadiazolium-2-phenylamines, (11 unpublished), and the other 16 compounds belonging to the class of mesoionic 1,3,4-triazolium -2-thiolate, (15 unpublished), with the objective of evaluating its efficiency as inhibitors of corrosion in acidic corrosion. Derivatives of the class 1,3,4-thiadiazolium-2-phenylamines were obtained with satisfactory purity and yields in the range of 42-96% and, in the class of 1,3,4-triazolium-2-thiolates in 20 -97%. All compounds were characterized by IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies. The theoretical study was conducted using the SPARTAN-PRO program in the semi-empirical method with the Hamiltonian AM1, to determine its structural and electronic properties of 1,3,4-thiadiazolium-2-phenylamines that could contribute to the efficiency of inhibition of corrosion. The compounds of 1,3,4-thiadiazolium-2-phenylamine class were tested against corrosion of AISI 1020 carbon steel in 0.5 mol L-1HCl and in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4. For this evaluation, the electrochemical techniques of Potenciodynamic Polarization (PP), Resistance to Linear Polarization (RPL) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were used. The results showed significant percentages of corrosion inhibition in both acidic solutions, reaching the rate of up to 95% efficiency for the compound 4-phenyl-5-(3'-methoxy-phenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazolium-2-phenylamine chloride in the concentration of 3.5x10-4 mol L-1 for the HCl solution, and 99% efficiency for the 2'-chloro and 2'-fluorosubstituted compounds in the concentration of3.5x10-4 mol L-1 for the H2SO4 solution. In addition to the electrochemical techniques, the gravimetric technique was used, which presented 99% of anticorrosive efficiency for the 2'-trifluoromethyl-substituted 1,3,4-thiadiazolium-2-phenylamine derivative, showed the best inhibitory effect in HCl solution. However, the 2'-trifluoromethyl-substituted 1,3,4-triazolium-2-thiol derivative showed less corrosion efficiency than its corresponding isomer. The methodologies used to evaluate the corrosion activity (PP, RPL and EIE), including the theoretical evaluation by molecular modeling, indicated the mesoionic chloridrates as efficient mixed corrosion inhibitors.

Structural Characterisation, Residual Stress Determination and Degree of Sensitisation of Duplex Stainless Steel Welds

Gideon Abdullah, Mohammed Abdul Fatah, barrygideon@hotmail.com January 2009 (has links)
Welding of duplex stainless steel pipeline material for the oil and gas industry is now common practice. To date, research has been conducted primarily on the parent material and heat affected zones in terms of its susceptibility to various forms of corrosion. However, there has been little research conducted on the degree of sensitisation of the various successive weld layers, namely the root, fill and cap layers. The focus of this research study was to: (i) provide an in-depth microstructural analysis of the various weld passes, (ii) study the mechanical properties of the weld regions; (iii) determine degree of sensitisation of the various weld passes; and (iv) investigate the residual stress levels within the various regions/ phases of the welds. Four test conditions were prepared using manual Gas Tungsten Arc Welding with 'V' and 'U' bevel configuration. Structural analysis consisted of (i) optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and magnetic force microscopy; (ii) ferrite determination using Magna-Gauge, Fischer Ferrite-scope and Point Count method. Mechanical testing consisted of Vickers hardness measurements, Charpy impact studies and transverse tensile testing. The degree of sensitisation was determined by three test methods: a modified ASTM A262, ASTM A923 and a modified Double Loop Electrochemical Potentiodynamic Reactivation (DL-EPR) test. Residual stress levels were determined using two neutron diffraction techniques: a reactor source and a time of flight spallation source. Microstructure observed by optical microscopy and magnetic force microscopy shows the formation of both fine and coarse structures within the weld metal. There was no evidence of secondary austenite, being present in any of the weld metal conditions examined. In addition, no detrimental intermetallic phases or carbides were present. The DL-EPR test results revealed that the fill layer regions for all four conditions and the base material showed the highest values for Ir/Ia and Qr/Qa. All four test conditions passed the ASTM A262 and A923 qualitative type tests, even under restricted and modified conditions. Residual stress measurements by neutron diffraction conducted at Lucas Heights Hi-Flux Reactor revealed that the ferrite phase stress was tensile in the heat affected zones and weld, and appeared to be balanced by a local compressive austenite phase stresses in the normal and transverse directions. Residual stress measurements by neutron diffraction conducted at Los Alamos Nuclear Science Centre revealed that in the hoop direction, ferrite (211) and austenite (311) exhibit tensile strains in the weld. In the axial and radial direction, the strains for both phases were more compressive. Correlations between the degree of sensitization and microstructural changes / ferrite content were observed. Higher degrees of sensitization (Ir/Ia and Qr/Qa) were associated with reduced ferrite (increased austenite) content. Correlations between the stresses generated, the evolved microstructures and degree of sensitization were evident. Stresses within the cap region were generally shown to be of a tensile nature in the transverse and longitudinal direction. In summary, the study has shown that correlations exist between the weld microstructure, susceptibility to sensitisation and levels / distribution of internal stresses within the weld regions.
