Review of primary frequency control requirements on the GB power system against a background of increasing renewable generationPearmine, Ross Stuart January 2006 (has links)
The system frequency of a synchronous power system varies with the imbalance of energy supplied and the electrical energy consumed. When large generating blocks are lost, the system undergoes a frequency swing relative to the size of the loss. Limits imposed on the magnitude of frequency deviation† prevent system collapse. Operation of frequency responsive plant to control frequency, results in lower machine efficiencies. Changes to the generation mix on the British transmission system have occurred in the past ten years, when the response requirement was last reviewed. Future increased levels of wind turbines‡ will alter the operational characteristics of the system and warrant investigation. A process to optimise the response requirements while maintaining statutory limits on frequency deviation has been identified. The method requires suitable load and generator models to replicate transmission system performance. A value to substitute for current load sensitivity to frequency has been presented from empirical studies. Traditional coal fired generator models have been improved with additional functions to provide a comparable response with existing units. A novel combined cycle gas turbine model using fundamental equations and control blocks has also been developed. A doubly fed induction generator model, based on existing literature, has been introduced for representing wind turbine behaviour in system response studies. Validation of individual models and the complete system against historic loss events has established confidence in the method. A review of the current system with the dynamic model showed that current primary response requirements are inadequate. The secondary response requirements generally show a slight reduction in the holding levels. Simulations including extra wind generation have shown that there is potential to reduce the primary response requirement in the future. The secondary response requirements are maintained with added wind farms.

Real-time state estimation of a distributed electrical power system under conditions of deregulationKusekwa, Mashauri A. D. January 2010 (has links)
Thesis (DTech (Electrical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2010. / Static state estimation is a mathematical procedure in which physical measurements from
sub-stations and physical model are combined in an optimal way. That is, the measurements
obtained from the sub-stations are used with the physical model and the states of the power
system are selected or calculated such that the states match the measurements in some
best way. The states of a power system are the bus voltage magnitude and voltage angle of
each bus of the system.
Static state estimation is an increasingly common part of electrical power utility energy
management systems (EMS). It plays a critical part in a day-to-day operation of a power
system utility. The system measurements obtained from static estimation are used for realtime
operations like optimal power flow calculations and contingency analysis. Proper system
operations with regards to avoidance of insecure conditions includes situational awareness,
therefore, the static estimator plays an important role in power system security. A further
motivation: in increasingly electrical power deregulation, more economic operations mean
savings for customers and electrical power provider alike. Economic benefit might be
realized if system operators have a more accurate situational awareness of the system
through improved power system state estimator. The objective of the study was to develop method, algorithm and MATLAB program for
solution of power system state estimation using parallel processing techniques. In achieving
the objective, the study has concentrated on development of an approximate Tanzanian
power system network model comprising of 30 buses and used as a case study;
decomposing the bus admittance matrix of the model into 3 interconnected sub-systems;
development of mathematical model for real and reactive power injections, real and reactive
power flows in the transmission lines and tie-lines connecting the sub-systems; development
of measurement data model for voltage magnitude, real and reactive power injections, real
and reactive power flows; formulating of a constrained weighted least absolute value state
estimation problem; development of decomposition-coordination method and algorithm; and
formulating algorithm and MATLAB program for solving the constrained state estimation
problem using parallel processing technique.

Modeling and control coordination of power systems with FACTS devices in steady-state operating modeNguyen, Van Liem January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is devoted to the development of new models for a recently-implemented FACTS (flexible alternating current transmission system) device, the unified power flow controller (UPFC), and the control coordination of power systems with FACTS devices in steady-state operating mode. The key objectives of the research reported in the thesis are, through online control coordination based on the models of power systems having FACTS devices, those of maximising the network operational benefit and restoring system static security following a disturbance or contingency. Based on the novel concept of interpreting the updated voltage solutions at each iteration in the Newton-Raphson (NR) power-flow analysis as dynamic variables, the thesis first develops a procedure for representing the unified power flow controllers (UPFCs) in the steady-state evaluation. Both the shunt converter and series converter control systems of a UPFC are modeled in their dynamical form with the discrete time variable replaced by the NR iterative step in the power-flow analysis. The key advantage of the model developed is that of facilitating the process of UPFC constraint resolution during the NR solution sequence. Any relative priority in control functions pre-set in the UPFC controllers is automatically represented in the power-flow formulation. Although the developed UPFC model based on the dynamic simulation of series and shunt converter controllers is flexible and general, the number of NR iterations required for convergence can be large. Therefore, the model is suitable mainly for power system planning and design studies. For online control coordination, the thesis develops the second UPFC model based on nodal voltages. The model retains all of the flexibility and generality of the dynamic simulation-based approach while the number of iterations required for solution convergence is independent of the UPFC controller dynamic responses. Drawing on the constrained optimisation based on Newtons method together with the new UPFC model expressed in terms of nodal voltages, a systematic and general method for determining optimal reference inputs to UPFCs in steady-state operation is developed. The method is directly applicable to UPFCs operation with a high-level line optimisation control (LOC) for maximising the network operational benefit. By using a new continuation technique with adaptive parameter, the algorithm for solving the constrained optimisation problem extends substantially the region of convergence achieved with the conventional Newtons method. Having established the foundation provided by the comprehensive models developed for representing power systems with FACTS devices including the UPFC, the research, in the second part, focuses on real-time control coordination of power system controllers, with the main purpose of restoring power system static security following a disturbance or contingency. At present, as the cost of phasor measurement units (PMUs) and wide-area communication network is on the decrease, the research proposes and develops a new secondary voltage control where voltages at all of the load nodes are directly controlled, using measured voltages.

DESIGN OF SERVO CONTROL SYSTEM BY INTEGRAL VARIABLE STRUCTURE MODEL FOLLOWING CONTROL WITH APPLICATION TO ROLLER GEAR CAM AND POWER SYSTEMChang, Geeng-Kwei 01 January 2002 (has links)
A robust servo control system based on Integral Variable Structure Model Following Control (IVSMFC) is proposed. The IVSMFC approach comprises a reference model part for specifying the design requirements and an Integral Variable Structure Control (IVSC) part for minimizing the errors between the plant and the model. Sliding mode thus obtained features robustness against external disturbances and parameter variations. Design procedures in both continuous-time and discrete-time have been detailed.
The IVSMFC-based servo control system has been successfully applied to a DSP-based brushless DC motor drive for globoidal cam indexing system and to power system. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve fast and robust responses.

Power system stabilizers have been used for decades in order to provide the necessary damping of power system oscillations through generators excitation control. In this thesis, methodologies for stabilizers design (gain and phase compensation tuning) are presented. All stabilizers are simultaneously designed (coordinated design) taking into account a set of pre-specified operating conditions in order to ensure robustness. Two control structures are considered: decentralized (based on the use of local signals) and hierarchical (that uses remote signals). The power system dynamic is modeled in state space and the tuning procedure is formulated as an optimization problem in order to maximize the damping coefficient associated to the dominant pole in closed-loop operation for all operating conditions. The proposed methodologies are based on optimization algorithms bio-inspired in swarm behavior: Particle Swarm Optimization and Bat Algorithm. Hybrid methodologies are developed through coupling bio-inspired methods to the Steepest Descent method in order to enhance the local search procedure during the optimization process (only the stabilizers gain are adjusted in the local search). Multipopulational approaches are also developed in order to prevent the population diversity lost.
The proposed methodologies are validated by using small and medium-sized benchmark power systems. The results are considered to be promising and the proposed methodologies are found of a great value in this research field.

Sensory input encoding and readout methods for in vitro living neuronal networksOrtman, Robert L. 06 July 2012 (has links)
Establishing and maintaining successful communication stands as a critical prerequisite for achieving the goals of inducing and studying advanced computation in small-scale living neuronal networks. The following work establishes a novel and effective method for communicating arbitrary "sensory" input information to cultures of living neurons, living neuronal networks (LNNs), consisting of approximately 20 000 rat cortical neurons plated on microelectrode arrays (MEAs) containing 60 electrodes. The sensory coding algorithm determines a set of effective codes (symbols), comprised of different spatio-temporal patterns of electrical stimulation, to which the LNN consistently produces unique responses to each individual symbol. The algorithm evaluates random sequences of candidate electrical stimulation patterns for evoked-response separability and reliability via a support vector machine (SVM)-based method, and employing the separability results as a fitness metric, a genetic algorithm subsequently constructs subsets of highly separable symbols (input patterns). Sustainable input/output (I/O) bit rates of 16-20 bits per second with a 10% symbol error rate resulted for time periods of approximately ten minutes to over ten hours. To further evaluate the resulting code sets' performance, I used the system to encode approximately ten hours of sinusoidal input into stimulation patterns that the algorithm selected and was able to recover the original signal with a normalized root-mean-square error of 20-30% using only the recorded LNN responses and trained SVM classifiers. Response variations over the course of several hours observed in the results of the sine wave I/O experiment suggest that the LNNs may retain some short-term memory of the previous input sample and undergo neuroplastic changes in the context of repeated stimulation with sensory coding patterns identified by the algorithm.
