IMPROVING THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE OF TRAUMA-IMPACTED STUDENTS: IDENTIFYING EMERGING BEST PRACTICES FOR TEACHING LOW-SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS URBAN STUDENTS

Lane, Regina 01 January 2021 (has links)
This qualitative action research concentrates on examining the best practices for teachers in trauma-informed practices by producing an implementation guide to train the trainer. The theoretical framework utilized to help inform the development of this research was Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory (1989) in relation to human development for identifying the emerging best practices with being trauma informed. The scope of this research focuses on low-socioeconomic status (SES) urban youth, so cultural sensitivity is naturally always a component of a complete train-the-trainer, trauma-informed teaching program. I identified the emerging best practices in two ways: (a) by gathering and summarizing supporting sources of literature and (b) by holding collaborative conversations with acknowledged experts in culturally competent trauma-informed training. The findings revealed six components essential to prepare the trainer on trauma-informed education training. First, culturally responsive pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching were identified to aid in bridging the gap in providing support. Social capital based upon lived experiences of students was recognized by acknowledging their needs through appropriate modeling of positive attitudes and behavior while increasing confidence in student learning using inclusive resources demonstrated throughout academic content. Next, the key principles of brain science were acknowledged showing a relationship between impact of trauma and learning affects such as: processing, decoding, self-regulation, and impulse control. Then, mental health was addressed to show there is an impact of negative interactions and disciplinary actions, according to Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) ecological systems theory. Attitude and language were acknowledged as both verbal and non-verbal and having an impact on instructional behavior, which influences student climate in learning and behavior. Lastly, the equity and accountability components were identified to require teachers to move away from implicit bias issues by creating more cultural-normative behavior through designing more restorative practices while building partnerships with students and families alike. The result of this action research provided a set of emerging best practices embedded in the implementation guide to support the trainer in training educators on how to teach trauma-impacted youth in California’s culturally diverse public-school classrooms.

Because they are the teachers the main professionals working with these students, his training becomes part key to improving the quality of education, having as the principle that everyone can come to receive students with disabilities in their classrooms said regular. Based on the theoretical framework of Pletsch (2009), Carvalho (2009), Mantoan (2006), Machado (2009) and Mittler (2003), this dissertation seeks to identify as there is the formation of teachers who work with students included and the perception of these about inclusion. The methodological process was routed through open interviews with four (04) teachers from early years of a State School, located in Pelotas/RS. The results show that, in general, the teachers did not have No preparation for dealing with the inclusion during the initial training, and training was given, especially when they had contact with the classes with students included. The main alternative training were by means of Information Technologies, pedagogical meetings held in the school and the presence of a teacher specialist for existing support that allowed them to converse and remedy doubts. Another point highlighted was referring to what we call for continued training institutionalized and continued training non-institutionalized. The first character with more individual and informal and the second, more formalized by means of courses or specific programs. The teachers emphasized have been changes to deal with inclusion. Made reference to the humanization of them to seek to understand the needs and pace of each one of his students, for example. It was possible to conclude that the teachers they found viable alternatives for their formation and that these alternatives have helped to ensure that the work with the inclusion would be most qualified. However, although if they consider prepared to work with the inclusion, the interviewees emphasize that the training of teachers still requires improvement and greater attention of the public agencies of education.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the discursive practices of three teachers that have kept direct and indirect relationships with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT‟s) in the teaching-learning process. To accomplish with this purpose, we have adopted as theoretical framework the model of Digital Multiliteracies proposed by Selber (2004), which considers the multilayered dimensions of Digital Literacies and tries to explain them reasonably through three main levels of computer literacy: Functional Literacy, Critical Literacy, and Rhetorical Literacy. In addition, to better investigate the discursive practices of the teachers surveyed, we also have found support on Positioning Theory, according to which we provide discursive locations for ourselves and the others within a moral order that we establish during a symbolic exchange, building specific points of view inside the positions we take on (Harré and Van Langenhove, 1999). Methodologically, this research is structured as an ethnographic case study (André, 1995; Yin, 2001; Viégas, 2007) associated to a discourse (micro) analysis (Gee et al., 1992; Sacks et al., 1974, 2005; Davies and Harré, 1990). The context of this qualitative research is a public school pertaining to the municipal education system of Juiz de Fora – Minas Gerais. This school is located in a suburbian area of the city. The participants are three teachers that have kept direct and indirect relationships with ICT‟s in education, namely: the teacher of Educational Informatics, the teacher of a classroom (4th year of Brazilian elementary school) and the teacher responsible for the school library. To generate the data, we have used questionnaires, field notes, observation and semi-structured interviews. The corpus of this research consists mainly of the transcripts from interviews made with the participants. The results of this study point out that although the teachers have taken on favorable positions regarding the use of ICT‟s in education, their personal and professional experiences with such technologies tend to influence at different levels of commitment to the project of insertion of ICT‟s in the teaching-learning process. The data analysis also evinces a predominance of Functional Digital Literacy in the school investigated, which indicates the necessity for adoption of more critical perspectives regarding Digital Literacies in educational settings.
