Reliability Based Safety Level Evaluation Of Turkish Type Precast Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders Designed In Accordance With The Load And Resistance Factor Desing MethodArginhan, Oktay 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The main aim of the present study is to evaluate the safety level of Turkish type precast prestressed concrete bridge girders designed according to American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Load and Resistance Factor Design (AASHTO LRFD) based on reliability theory. Span lengths varying from 25 m to 40 m are considered. Two types of design truck loading models are taken into account: H30S24-current design live load of Turkey and HL93-design live load model of AASHTO LRFD. The statistical parameters of both load and resistance components are estimated from local data and published data in the literature. The bias factors and coefficient of variation of live load are estimated by extrapolation of cumulative distribution functions of maximum span moments of truck survey data (Axle Weight Studies) that is gathered from the Division of Transportation and Cost Studies of the General Directorate of Highways of Turkey. The uncertainties associated with C40 class concrete and prestressing strands are evaluated by the test data of local manufacturers. The girders are designed according to the requirements of both Service III and Strength I limit states. The required number of strands is calculated and compared.
Increasing research in the field of bridge evaluation based on structural reliability justifies the consideration of reliability index as the primary measure of safety of bridges. The reliability indexes are calculated by different methods for both Strength I and Service III limit states. The reliability level of typical girders of Turkey is compared with those of others countries. Different load and resistance factors are intended to achieve the selected target reliability levels. For the studied cases, a set of load factors corresponding to different levels of reliability index is suggested for the two models of truck design loads. Analysis with Turkish type truck models results in higher reliability index compared to the USA type truck model for the investigated span lengths

Effects Of Frame Aspect Ratio On The Seismic Performance Improvement Of Panel Strengthening TechniqueOkuyucu, Dilek 01 August 2011 (has links) (PDF)
PC panel strengthening technique was developed in M.E.T.U. Structural Mechanics
Laboratory in order to respond the need of practical and efficient pre-quake seismic
strengthening procedures applicable to RC framed structures. The idea behind the
method is simply to convert the non-structural infills into load bearing structural
elements by gluing PC panels over the existing infill wall surface. The remarkable
advantages of the procedure is not only the considerable amount of seismic
performance improvement but also the simplicity of application, very low levels of
disturbance to the occupants and most importantly, the applicability during service.
A number of PC panel application parameters were experimentally investigated by
previous researchers. The success of PC panel method on seismic performance
improvement of RC frames with different aspect ratios was experimentally investigated
in the present study. Total of fifteen, 1:3 scaled, one-bay, two-storey RC frames were
tested in three various aspect ratio series. Constant axial load was applied to the
columns and reversed cyclic load was applied in the lateral direction. Hollow brick
v
infilled frame and cast-in-place RC infilled frame were the lower and upper bound
reference specimens, respectively.
Seismic performance indicators such as response envelope curves, lateral load carrying
capacities, cumulative energy dissipations, initial stiffness indicators and ductility
values clearly showed the effectiveness of PC panel application over different geometry
of RC frames of concern. Moreover, PC panel application either with rectangular or
with strip shaped PC panels provided seismic performance improvement to be almost
equal to that of cast-in-place RC infill application for all series.
Equivalent diagonal strut concept was followed in analytical studies to simulate the
infills of RC frame openings. The required strut material properties were estimated
from total of eighteen individual wall panel tests. The bond-slip effect, due to
utilization low strength of concrete and plain rebars, was also investigated and
introduced to the analytical frame models. Non-linear push over analysis was
performed for all specimens in OpenSees computer software. The analytical results
were compared with that of experimental response envelopes.

Flexural strengthening of prestressed hollow-core slabs using near-surface mounted (NSM) CFRP reinforcementFoubert, Steven 09 May 2014 (has links)
Prestressed hollow core slabs are essential components in structures such as bridges, parking garages, marine structures, and commercial and industrial buildings. Material degradation and altered functional requirements may seriously threaten the structural integrity of these reinforced concrete structures. Using FRP composites, the NSM strengthening technique presents a viable solution to these challenges. However, further investigation is required to establish comprehensive empirical design guidelines. The intent of this research project is to investigate the NSM technique in conjunction with common design concepts such as prestressed concrete, precast hollow core slabs, the complex behaviour of disturbed regions, and fiber-reinforced composite materials. An experimental program was developed, which included eleven full-scale slab specimens, subject to a four-point load configuration. The main parameters included the prestressing reinforcement ratio, CFRP strengthening ratio, and in-service opening location. Experimental results showed that prestressed concrete strengthened in flexure with NSM-CFRP is a viable technique for lower reinforcement ratios.

Precast Concrete Panel Reinforced Infill Walls For Seismic Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Framed StructuresBaran, Mehmet 01 June 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The importance of seismic rehabilitation became evident with 1992 Erzincan Earthquake, after which a large number of reinforced concrete buildings damaged in recent earthquakes required strengthening as well as repair. In the studies related
to rehabilitation, it has been realized that inadequate lateral stiffness is one of the major causes of damage in reinforced concrete buildings. Recently, economical, structurally effective and practically applicable seismic retrofitting techniques are being developed in METU Structural Mechanics Laboratory to overcome these kinds of problems.
The strengthening technique proposed in this thesis is on the basis of the principle of strengthening the existing hollow brick infill walls by using high strength precast concrete panels such that they act as cast-in-place concrete infills
improving the lateral stiffness. Also, the technique would not require evacuation of the building and would be applicable without causing too much disturbance to the occupant. For this purpose, after two preliminary tests to verify the proper
functioning of the newly developed test set-up, a total of fourteen one-bay two story reinforced concrete frames with hollow brick infill wall, two being unstrengthened reference frames, were tested under reversed cyclic lateral loading
simulating earthquake loading. The specimens were strengthened by using six different types of precast concrete panels. Strength, stiffness, energy dissipation and story drift characteristics of the specimens were examined by evaluating the test results. Test results indicated that the proposed seismic strengthening technique can be very effective in improving the seismic performance of the reinforced
concrete framed building structures commonly used in Turkey.
In the analytical part of the study, hollow brick infill walls strengthened by using high strength precast concrete panels were modelled once by means of equivalent
diagonal struts and once as monolithic walls having an equivalent thickness. The experimental results were compared with the analytical results of the two approaches mentioned. On the basis of the analytical work, practical recommendations were made for the design of such strengthening intervention to be executed in actual practice.

With the emerging precast concrete technology, the civil construction has acquired high agility, reducing construction time and greater quality control in execution. Among several precast pieces, tile in prestressed concrete is characterized by selfsupporting spans of up to 25 m, without the existence of an intermediate support structure. Being a slim product, requires an improvement in increasing the durability of the structure because of the steel corrosion and maintain their fitness for use. The objective of this research is to reduce the permeability of the precast tiles, and analyzing their influence in the durability of the concrete face of the aggressiveness classes constants in the NBR 9062/2006, that establish the a/c ratio up to 0,45 and minimum compressive strength characteristic of 40 MPa, positioning themselves as a class of environmental aggressiveness II - Urban. For this, were selected a few mineral admixture from Curitiba/Paraná and a waterproof internal admixture, comparing with the concrete mix pre-existing in production line. The concrete dosages were defined by packing particles and were analysed for mechanical compressive strength, water absorption by immersion and by capillarity and water penetration under pressure, in addition to tests of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), carbonation and chloride ion penetration. About the mechanical compressive strength, the dosage reference showed the best results (due to lower water / cement ratio and higher cement consumption), followed by concrete with waterproofing admixture and metakaolin. For water absorption, all measurements fall as durable concrete, especially the metakaolin additive and filler + waterproofing. For the water absorption, all dosages presented low permeability. For the water penetration under pressure all fall as impervious to several conditions, especially with metakaolin and waterproofing admixture. The MIP test shows that the dosage with filler has a higher concentration of pores and the dosage with metakaolin has the smallest maximum diameter of pores, with a tendency towards refinement in smaller diameters. When analyzing the carbonation, the metakaolin showed the best results, allowing a smaller reinforcement cover for a lifetime of 50 years. As the penetration of chlorides ions, the metakaolin, showed a greater reduction comparing with other dosages for its pozzolanic activity, contributing to the concrete durability. In general, it is possible to improve the concrete impermeability with the addition of 8% of metakaolin by weight of cement, with 5,2% of cement reduction, showing good results also using 1% of waterproofing admixture. As for durability, the optimizing of aggregates granulometric curve and the use of metakaolin enables the use of prefabricated tiles in regions of class of environmental aggressiveness III - Industrial or Marine, observing the minimum concrete cover of reinforcement.

[en] MOMENT REDISTRIBUTION IN CONTINUOUS SEGMENTAL BEAMS PRESTRESSED WITH EXTERNAL SYNTHETIC TENDONS / [pt] REDISTRIBUIÇÃO DE MOMENTOS EM VIGAS CONTÍNUAS EM ADUELAS PROTENDIDAS COM CABOS SINTÉTICOS EXTERNOSAELLINGTON FREIRE DE ARAUJO 14 July 2003 (has links)
Todas as vigas têm a mesma seção transversal tipo I, com
[en] An experimental investigation on the behavior of continuous
segmental concrete beams, prestressed with external aramid
tendons, was carried out. Four beams were tested; one was
monolithic and the others were constructed in precast dry-
jointed segments. All the beams had the same overall
dimensions, with two spans and an I section 30 cm high,
flange width of 30 cm and web thickness of 10 cm. The 1/dp
span/section height) ratio was 18,75 for the monolithic
beam and 12.5, 18.75 and 25 for the segmental beams. The
beams were post-tensioned with two external aramid tendons,
which are made of high strength (2700 MPa) high modulus
(126000 MPa)Kevlar 49 yarns. The main objective was to
study the moment redistribution in the post-cracking stage.
Test results have shown that the moment redistribution in
segmental beams can be obtained from a similar monolithic
beam and that the moment redistribution is only slightly
affected by the 1/dp.

Pontes em estruturas segmentadas pré-moldadas protendidas: análise e contribuições ao gerenciamento do processo construtivo / Bridges in precast prestressed segmented structures: analysis and contributions to the management of the construction processAnna Rosenblum 14 August 2009 (has links)
This work aims to contribute to the improvement of the construction process of bridges and viaducts in precast prestressed segmented structures built in balanced cantilevers, based on an analysis of the methodologies adopted and assessing the viability of the establishment of a model for management processes that use industrial methods for the execution of special bridges. Following a review of the
available technical literature, and taking as reference the constructive methods used in two different construction sites, the constructive methodology is assessed, aiming
the improvement of the manufacturing, launching and erection process, and the resulting reduction in costs, waste and time. Among the several aspects examined, we emphasize the importance of the use of a project management tool in precast
bridges job sites, as they show themselves to be an industrialized, repetitive process, working almost like a manufacturing unit. This research, thus, proposes to supply
subsidies for the establishment of guidelines for a better integration of project and job site, and the consequent improvement of execution in construction sites.

The following analyses were made. In the first analysis, the expressions of the codes were applied for the whole structural element, obtaining its stiffness; so, with the use of the expression from the strength of materials, the immediate displacement was determined, called in this work of Branson and CEB-90. In the second analysis, with the help of the computational system ANSYS ®, the expressions for the calculation of the stiffness according to the codes were applied to the finite elements that were composing the prototypes and not more to the prototypes as a whole. The load was applied in an incremental mode, and this type of non-linear analysis produced the results called in the text of Branson discretized and CEB-90 discretized. In the third analysis, with the help of the ANSYS®, and using the incremental load, for each finite element, the expressions of the stiffness associated to the states I and II, that depends on the cracking moment and the maximum bending moment that acts in each finite element, were applied. These results were called in the text of Ansys States I and II. For the mentioned analyses, both the calculated and the experimentally observed cracking moment values were used. Also there was analysed the behavior of the neuter line. Considering the Service Limit State, the methods of Branson, of the CEB-90, the CEB-90 discretized and of Ansys States I and II presented satisfactory results, on behalf of the security, since the calculated cracking moment is used. / Behaviour of concrete precast elements with semi-rigid connections.Souza, Abner Soares de 01 September 2006 (has links)

Previous issue date: 2006-09-01 / Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais / The behaviour of reinforced concrete precast beams is strongly influenced by the flexural
stiffness of its beam-column connections, wherein there is interdependence between the nonlinearity
of the moment-curvature relationship along the beam and the non-linearity of the
moment-rotation relationship of the beam-column connections. In most of the existing
researches on semi-rigid connections in precast structures, the main focus lays on the
characterization of the flexural stiffness by performing experimental tests on isolated models
of beam-column connections instead of tests on sub-frames, comprising beam and
connections. In this research an experimental procedure was developed, wherein different
theoretical equations based on the fixity factor of the connections were combined, allowing
the integration between the stiffness of the reinforced concrete beam with the flexural
stiffness of the beam-column connections. Therefore, by using this procedure it was possible
to evaluate the semi-rigid behaviour of the beam-column connection, highlighting the
possibility of carrying out just one test for the precast beam with its connections. The analyses
of the experimental results indicate that the studied connection was capable of absorbing
around 53% of the elastic beam-end moment at the ULS, compared with the situation of a full
restrained connector, implying the increase of 170% of the positive mid-span moment of the
beam. This level of semi-rigid behaviour for the beam-column connection can affect the
global stability of skeletal precast concrete structures with more than five storeys in height.
For this reason, the present research shows the need for further studies with the purpose of
enhancing the analysis and the design of precast concrete structures for multi-storey buildings.
