The Development of Algebraic Reasoning in Undergraduate Elementary Preservice TeachersHayata, Carole Anne 12 1900 (has links)
Although studies of teacher preparation programs have documented positive changes in mathematical knowledge for teaching with preservice teachers in mathematics content courses, this study focused on the impact of a mathematics methods course and follow-up student teaching assignment. The presumption was that preservice teachers would show growth in their mathematical knowledge during methods since the course was structured around active participation in mathematics, research-based pedagogy, and was concurrent with a two-day-per-week field experience in a local elementary school. Survey instruments utilized the computer adaptive test version of the Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKT) measures from the Learning Mathematics for Teaching Project, and the Attitudes and Beliefs (towards mathematics) survey from the Mathematical Education of Elementary Teachers Project. A piecewise growth model analysis was conducted on data collected from 176 participants at 5 time-points (methods, 3 time-points; student teaching, 2 time-points) over a 9 month period. Although the participants' demographics were typical of U.S. undergraduate preservice teachers, findings suggest that initial low-level of mathematical knowledge, and a deep-rooted belief that there is only one way to solve mathematics problems, limited the impact of the methods and student teaching courses. The results from this study indicate that in (a) number sense, there was no significant change during methods (p = .392), but a significant decrease during student teaching (p < .001), and in (b) algebraic thinking, there was a significant decrease during methods (p < .001), but no significant change during student teaching (p = .653). Recommendations include that the minimum teacher preparation program entry requirements for mathematical knowledge be raised and that new teachers participate in continued professional development emphasizing both mathematical content knowledge and reform-based pedagogy to continue to peel away deep-rooted beliefs towards mathematics.

The pervasiveness of injustices is rooted in structures and ideology that reinforce and reinvent oppression; there is a need to engage in transformative change to dismantle systems of domination and subordination. Educational leadership is essential in the social transformation of educational settings and the wider society. In the collective responsibility for transformative change, educational leadership preparation programs serve as spaces to encourage the development of students’ capacity to address issues of oppression and create new power relations for social justice. Faculty play a role in preparation programs to enact teaching that uncover to power dynamics of oppression and domination for social emancipation.
The purpose of this critical qualitative study was to understand how faculty in doctoral educational leadership preparation programs teach to encourage students’ capacity development to engage in transformative leadership. The guiding question for this study is: How do faculty engage in teaching to encourage students’ capacity development to understand and transform social oppression affecting education? Using an interview methodology, data is generated through relational interviewing using artifacts. The conceptual framework of critical pedagogy, transformative criticality, and transformative leadership development guides a sociocultural approach to the analysis of the data. There were four major findings: The participants (1) integrated critical frameworks into curriculum and pedagogical approaches, (2) established spaces in and outside of the formal classroom to engage students, (3) centered student-faculty relationships for support and collaboration, and (4) evoked students’ transformative activism through academic practice. This empirical study will contribute to the research on critical perspectives in educational leadership preparation programs with a focus on faculty teaching as an expression of transformative power.

O presente trabalho estuda os impactos na constituição subjetiva de seis auxiliares de educação infantis (ADIs) que trabalhavam em Centros de Educação Infantil da rede municipal de ensino de São Paulo e que passaram por formação docente em Curso Normal, em nível médio, que foi denominado Programa ADI-Magistério, promovido pela Secretaria Municipal de Educação de São Paulo e que atendeu cerca de 3700 profissionais em exercício. Ele apoiou-se em estudos protagonizados por Vigotsky, e retomados por Bruner, Leme, Grandesso, dentre outros, e utilizou a perpectiva teórico-metodológica da Rede de Significações (Rossetti-Ferreira et allii.) para a análise dos dados. Através do exame das narrativas produzidas em entrevistas abertas, a análise buscou identificar os contextos formativos da subjetividade de cada ADI, o que incluiu os acontecimentos históricos, os princípios e métodos de ensino do Programa ADI-Magistério, as relações sociais e as experiências relatadas, e a apreciação de cada uma sobre o novo papel social que assumiram em decorrência da formação - ser professor, avaliando as circunstâncias favorecedoras ou não de mudanças. A partir da configuração dessa rede, verificou como o discurso de cada entrevistada apontava mudanças no olhar para si mesma, ampliação na visão do próprio mundo e dos acontecimentos, alterações na prática profissional, e modificações na concepção de educação infantil. Por último, analisou as conseqüências das experiências provocadas pelo Programa ADI-Magistério para o processo de constituição subjetiva de cada ADI-aluna. Este trabalho poderá contribuir para o planejamento de outros processos formativos, como suporte e estruturação curricular de novos cursos, além de realçar a função social dos processos de formação. / The current study analyses the impact of the subjective development of six Assistant of Child Development, who underwent a teacher preparation programme, named Programa ADI-Magistério, promoted by the Municipal Secretary of Education of the City of Sao Paulo, which enrolled around 3700 professionals working in the Child Education Centers of its educational system. Starting from a hypothesis that the teacher´s way of being and thinking plays an active role in the teaching-learning interface, the objective of this study is to analyze the subjective developmental changes that appear in the subjects\' narratives and to evaluate the favorable and unfavorable circumstances for these changes, based on Vygotsky, Bruner, Leme, Grandesso, and the theoretical-methodological perspective elaborated by Rossetti-Ferreira and allii. and called Network of Meanings. In their interwiews, the subjects were stimulated to reflect about some contexts of their development as their life history, their social relationships and experiences, the principles and methods of the Teaching Preparation Program, and their appreciation of the new social role which they were formally assuming: to be a teacher. From the configuration of this network, the narratives elaborated by the interviewed persons have pointed out changes in their self-image, enlargement in their world vision, changes in their professional practice, and the modification in their concept of early childhood education. A final analysis discussed the mediation of the Teaching Preparation Program in the process of subjective development of each ADI student. Data-Driven Instruction Use for Residency II Candidates After Clinical InstructionShort, Donna 01 January 2019 (has links)
Residency II teacher candidates seeking education licensure at the southeastern public state university had low evaluation scores on their ability to provide feedback and modify instruction based on assessment. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how 27 Residency II teacher candidates modified instruction based on assessment data during their field experience as indicated by the Tennessee Educator Acceleration Model (TEAM), Educational Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) Rubric 15 score, and self-reported qualitative surveys. The focus of the research questions included a conceptual framework for examining the level of assessment proficiency on the local and national assessments. The congruency of these three measures of data analysis addressed the courses and field experiences of Residency II clinical teacher candidates. The major findings were that teacher candidates were meeting expectations of the edTPA and TEAM; however, the preexisting teacher candidates' surveys indicated that there was a lack of satisfaction with their data training. Evidence indicated that the EDTPA and TEAM provided the quantitative measurements but did not provide the qualitative feedback to address any modifications in the instruction. The possible social change implications of this study involves the Residency II teacher candidates participating in an organized, 3-day workshop to have a purposeful experience where they learned collectively and enriched their field experiences while exceeding the required expectations of the edTPA and TEAM assessments.

The present study was developed with the purpose of identifying the demands of civil
servants and technical and administrative former staff in education at UFSM, their
expectations and concerns about the process for retirement from institution. For this, were
applied interviews and structured questionnaires with open questions to technical and
administrative staff in education who are 5 years or less retired, to servers that are 5 years or
less to retirement and some managers of the institution. The methodological procedures were
exploratory case study, descriptive, qualitative and quantitative approach. To conduct the
study, readings related to changes and developments in the world of work, legislation and
retirement were made. After analyzing the results of the three segments and interviews with
the servants, the obtained results allowed to verify the view of the servants already retired,
expectations of pre-retirees and vision of managers about shutdown retirement UFSM.
Knowledge of these factors can contribute to organizational practices that promote personal
satisfaction and appreciation of the human capital of the institution, as well as subsidize the
program Transforming Today - Retirement Preparation Program, which was implemented at
UFSM since 2011. / O presente estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de verificar quais as demandas dos
servidores e ex-servidores técnico-administrativos em educação da UFSM, seus anseios e
preocupações com relação ao processo de desligamento por aposentadoria da instituição. Para
isso, foram aplicados entrevistas e questionários estruturados com questões abertas aos
servidores técnico-administrativos em educação aposentados há 5 anos ou menos, aos
servidores que estão há 5 anos ou menos da aposentadoria e a alguns gestores da instituição.
Os procedimentos metodológicos foram de estudo de caso do tipo exploratório, descritivo e
com abordagem qualitativa e quantitativa. Para a realização da pesquisa, foram feitas, ainda,
leituras referentes às transformações e evoluções no mundo do trabalho e sobre legislação de
aposentadoria. Após a análise dos resultados dos três segmentos e das entrevistas com os
servidores, os resultados obtidos permitiram perceber a opinião dos servidores já aposentados,
as expectativas dos pré-aposentados e a visão dos gestores sobre o desligamento por
aposentadoria da UFSM. O conhecimento desses fatores poderá contribuir para práticas
organizacionais que promovam a satisfação pessoal e a valorização do capital humano da
instituição, bem como subsidiar o Programa Transformar o Hoje Programa de Preparação
para Aposentadoria, que está implantado na UFSM desde o ano de 2011.

Abstract
The perceptions of school leaders on the effectiveness of the school leadership preparation program (SLPP) in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI) public school system have not been examined. Highly qualified teachers are selected and trained for administrative and leadership roles through the SLPP. This qualitative case study was conducted to evaluate the level of effectiveness of the SLPP in the CNMI public school system. The conceptual framework was the Seven Habits of Effective Principal Preparation Programs by Davis and Jazzar. The theoretical frameworks were transformational leadership as articulated by Burns and instructional leadership. The research questions involved how aspiring leaders and their mentors described the effectiveness of the SLPP in the CNMI public school system and how aspiring leaders' field experience helped them learn essential skills associated with transformational and instructional leadership. A purposeful sampling of 4 participants was used, consisting of current school administrators who had completed the SLPP. Interviews were conducted to collect qualitative data. Interview data were transcribed, and transcripts were examined, organized, and synthesized to develop codes and themes. Member checking was used to validate transcriptions and findings. Findings from this study show that relevant courses, knowledge and experience in curriculum and instruction, internship and mentoring, leadership skills gained by participants, and relationship and collaboration are among the components that must be included in the SLPP. The social change can be derived from this study is that the findings from this qualitative case study are meaningful for policymakers, district leaders, and school leaders in the CNMI public school system.

An Urban School District's Preparing New Principals Program: Completers' Perceptions Of Program Effectiveness Related To Florida Principal Leadership Standards Adopted In 2011Pelletier, Kelly 01 January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to measure the extent to which school leaders who completed the preparing new principals program in School District A perceived the program’s effectiveness in preparing them to demonstrate Florida’s principal leadership standards as adopted in November 2011. This study also identified the components of the preparing new principals program that influenced the professional practice of the program completers in their current leadership roles within School District A. This study was conducted at the request of the professional development services designee in School District A and is a companion study to research conducted by Eddie Ruiz and Wesley Trimble. The Preparing New Principals Program Completer Survey was sent to 90 administrators in School District A who completed the preparing new principals program between 2008 and 2011. Follow-up interviews were conducted with six volunteers in order to further clarify responses to the survey and to gather additional input from program completers. Survey results as well as interview data were analyzed in order to give the professional development services designee information for designing a new principal preparation program for School District A. The literature review and the results of this study supported the premise that preparing principals for school leadership in 2013 involves more than developing management skills and knowledge of the functions of a school. Principals must be instructional leaders with an unwavering focus on student achievement. Overall, results of the study found the PNPP in the urban school district supported the participant’s awareness of the FPLS and also showed they perceived they were prepared to demonstrate the majority of the standards. However, the individual requirements and experiences of the PNPP had varying levels of perceived value to iii the professional practice of the participants. Results of the study recommended the PNPP experiences perceived to be invaluable or not practical should be evaluated for applicability, revised accordingly or possibly eliminated to improve the effectiveness of the PNPP. Although the structure of principal preparation programs in the state of Florida are unique due to laws that created a two leveled principal certification process, the findings and conclusions of this research study could be useful to any school district working to develop future principals. Suggested improvements to the PNPP included a longer principal internship, a strengthened mentor relationship, an application process for initial program entry, differentiated experiences, and an emphasis on increasing teacher effectiveness
