Souvýskyt primárních předložek v soudobých publicistických textech (korpusová sonda) / Cooccurrence of Primary Prepositions in Contemporary News Texts (Corpus Survey)

Komrsková, Zuzana January 2013 (has links)
Diploma thesis is concentrated on the phenomenon called coocurance of primary prepositions. It is a construction of two prepositions directly standing next to each other, where each of them is part of another prepositional phrase. The first preposition is not directly in front of its phrases, but there is the second prepositional phrase inserted between the first preposition and its phrases. The aim of the thesis was to find these structures in the corpus SYN2009PUB, and their description of the semantic and formal aspects. Inserted phrase is in most cases syntactically incorporated into sentence, where takes the adverbial or object distinction. Comparison in length (in number of words) of inserted phrase with the phrases, which can be inserted, showed that during insertion depends on the length of the transferred phrases. The paper outlines other factors affecting coocurence, e. g. pronounceability.

El factor edad en la adquisición del español como lengua extranjera : análisis comparativo entre estudiantes de sexto grado de primaria y universitarios sobre el uso del par preposicional a/ en

Ramirez Castello, Monica 12 1900 (has links)
Abstract According to Leeneberg's critical period hypothesis from the sixties, a child can acquire a second language approximately until puberty, for afterwards the lateralization of the brain takes place and the acquisition of second language becomes more difficult. Further on, Chomsky’s research would contribute to this theory with the Universal Grammar idea or the inborn universal linguistic elements that we use in order to acquire mother tongue. While the Universal Grammar is still on, the already acquired Mother Tongue continues to develop. As a result, the acquisition of another language during this period becomes a natural process, leading to the conclusion that the earlier a child starts learning a second language, the better its acquisition will be. Therefore and for the purpose of this research, a theoretical framework and the error analysis, the tool allowing the teacher to predict some error in order to create the adequate language strategies for effective second language acquisition, are used. I will try to verify the age-factor influence positively or negatively in the acquisition of a second language, in this special case the Spanish language, by means of the comparative analysis of the a/ en prepositional pair with two different groups of apprentices.

Preposition typology with manner of motion verbs in Spanish

Bassa Vanrell, Maria del Mar 25 March 2014 (has links)
Spanish, as a V(erb)-framed language (Talmy 1985), is expected to lexicalize the path of motion in the verb and manner in some satellite when it comes to the description of motion events. Nonetheless, it shows mixed properties (e.g. Aske 1989, Berman & Slobin 1994). All manner of motion verbs can take a path satellite introduced by the prepositions "hacia" and "hasta", and yet only some can take a path satellite introduced by the preposition "a." I claim that goal XPs introduced by "hasta" and "hacia" are adjuncts, whereas "a" is an argument marker. In order to capture the intermediacy of a verb’s ability to take a goal XP, I classify manner of motion verbs according to a three-way distinction that takes into account whether they encode path categorically, overwhelmingly, or only sometimes, and whether they lexically reject the notion of a goal. Finally, I posit verb coercion—under certain semantic and pragmatic conditions—of manner of motion verbs that strongly or categorically favor displacement in order to express a goal. These semantic/pragmatic influential factors are reduced to (i) degree of manner and (ii) degree of goal-orientedness. / text

Contracted Preposition-Determiner Forms in German: Semantics and Pragmatics

Puig Waldmüller, Estela Sophie 18 June 2008 (has links)
The semantics and pragmatics of contracted and non-contracted forms found in German will be discussed. Contracted form are prepositions with inflectional endings, and obligatory in contexts in which the descriptive content of the noun fits only one individual or event ("alternative-excluding" expressions, inferable referents, Situative Unika, nominalized infinitives, non-specific referents). Most accounts assume that contracted forms have underlying definite articles which have amalgamated with a preposition. In contrast, I propose to analyse these forms as semantically incorporating prepositions, which are inflected for (singular) number, gender, and case, and combine with noun phrases. Uniqueness effects are derived from singular number and from contextual entailments. Non-specific readings can directly be accounted for since the semantics predicts narrow scope of the nominal argument with respect to the event argument.

A sintaxe de constituintes locativos no portugues brasileiro = restrição e predicação / The syntax of locative constituints in brazilian portuguese : restriction and predication

Assuming a clausal configuration for PP-Locs (Koopman, 1997; Dikken, 2003; Avelar, 2006; Svenonius, 2007), the study addresses cases in which the locative phrase works either as a restrictive modifier of the name (when it is traditionally classified as an adnominal adjunct), or as an element that provides a secondary predication together with the nominal category (when it assumes a predicative function). The analysis explores the idea that in order to have a restrictive function and to operate as an adnominal adjunct, PP-Loc needs to be a complement of a category that encodes information about referentiality so as to meet the requirements of the semantic interface. The approach explores some consequences of Kayne's (1994) especifically with respect to the status of Spec-head relations; and also Starke's (1995) proposal, according to which predication relations that characterize small clauses involve a LexP projection. Adopting na expanded structure for nominal phrases following Vangsnes (2001), the study concludes that in order to a PP-Loc to be [+restrictive] it must necessarily be taken as a complement of D(eterminant) in the syntactic computation, carrying with it a deixis feature / Mestrado / Gramatica / Mestre em Linguística

¿ nos livros XIV, parte do XV e XVI, de suas Institutiones grammaticae ¿, a maneira como são neles tratadas as propriedades hoje consideradas ¿textuais¿ e ¿pragmáticas¿, que permitem uma aproximação entre as antigas preposições, conjunções e interjeições latinas e o atual conceito de MDs / Abstract: Discourse markers (DMs) can be defined as a very wide range of verbal mechanisms (words, small clauses, crystallised expressions etc.) that play a role both on a pragmatic level, inscribing enunciation in discourse, and on a textual level, organising parts of the text cohesively (cf. Schiffrin, 1996; Risso et al., 1996). They are expressed by non-prototypical usages of conjunctions, prepositions and interjections. Their properties have been found in analogous discourse occurrencies in Latin. Caroline Kroon (1995, 1998) has developed an extensive research on a number of words that she considered having these same discourse and textual properties: nam, enim, igitur, ergo, autem, vero and at. The core objective of our research is to verify within Donatus¿s Ars maior (c. IV a.D) ¿ in the sections De coniunctione, De praepositione and De interiectione ¿ and Priscian¿s Institutiones grammaticae (c. VI a.D) ¿ in the books XIV, part of XV and XVI ¿ the way the properties considered nowadays as belonging to the ¿textual¿ and ¿pragmatic¿ domains, had been addressed by the Latin grammarians and allow us to make an approximation between the ancient concepts of Latin prepositions, conjunctions and interjections and the current concept of DMs / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística

The research investigates the process of implementation for the education public policy of the municipality of Belo Horizonte especially in regards to curriculum. The objective is to verify the curricular prepositions that are being utilized in grades K-9 (Ensino Fundamental). The interest in this research came about by the experiences of the author through the implementation of the new education public policy at the Municipal Secretary of Education of Belo Horizonte. For this research, different forms of documents from the Secretary of Education and public policy in state and municipal levels were considered. The research was conducted with strong reflections of the theory from Stephan Ball, Jefferson Mainardes and others who focus on the development of public policy such as Arroyo, Dalben and Zaidan . Structured interviews and surveys were conducted to the pedagogy advisors and teachers who are present members of the municipality. The data collected through qualitative research and analysis of the interviewees in relevance to the prepositions and the work done in the development of the public schools grades k-9. The results seen from the data point to the necessity of investment for continuous training in the SMED (Municipal Secretary of Education), pedagogical coordinators and those teachers benefiting from the new public policy. The results that were found have acted as a basis for a new Plan of Educational Action, with outlook for the redirection to speed up with quality, an implementation of new Curricular Prepositions which will have the ability to strengthen the public municipal school system

The Use of English Prepositions in Swedish Schools : A survey study on language transfer effects on Swedish EFL learners in a Swedish upper secondary school

Johansson, Björn January 2017 (has links)
This empirical study investigates how English as a foreign language (EFL) learners in Swedish upper secondary schools succeed in their use of English prepositions. EFL learners in Sweden today represent a multitude of nationalities and ethnic groups with many different first languages (L1); therefore, English teaching could be subject to change in order to adapt to the new situation. The study is based on an online survey given to pupils taking “English 7” at upper secondary schools in Stockholm. The study aims to find patterns in how pupils with Swedish as their L1 handle English prepositions and use a control group consisting of pupils with another L1 in a comparative analysis based on language transfer. A teacher of English at the respondents’ school was interviewed to elicit teaching methodology and how they use the language diversity in the classroom when teaching prepositions. Even though it was hypothesised that negative language transfer was a factor, the analysis of the focus group shows that negative language transfer from Swedish did not inhibit the focus group’s ability to choose prepositions compared to the control group in the given context. In contrast, positive transfer from Swedish as an L1 contributed to a substantial increase in success rate. However, no clear connection could be made to teaching methodology as the interviewed teacher did not have any specific method for dealing with prepositions and mainly treated teaching prepositions implicitly. Furthermore, the interviewed teacher did not use language diversity in classroom as a tool for learning.

Sémantická analýza švédských sloves s částicí s přihlédnutím k rozdílu mezi předložkami a adverbii / Semantic analysis of Swedish phrasal verbs with consideration of differences between prepositions and adverbs

Šípková, Jitka January 2016 (has links)
(anglicky): In my thesis I analyze how Swedish verbal particles change semantics of the verb. Mainly I compare different types of verbal particles: bound and free particles, prepositional and adverbial particles. I observe how meaning of the verb + particle changes from local to metaphorical and further to lexicalized and grammaticalized meaning. Theoretical observations are based on general linguistics, particularly on premises of functional approaches. In the practical part of the thesis I analyze behavior of particles ut and av on a corpus sample. In the final part I compare conclusions made based on the literature with analysis of the language sample. The results show that most often verb + particle are lexicalized phrases. That applies even in cases, when the particle decides whether the action expressed by the verb has reached its end or not, which I considered partially grammaticalized in the theoretical part. Many of the lexicalized particle verbs have transparent meaning, which is possible to duplicate based on analogy. Such particle verbs with metaphorical, transparent meaning are source for great variability in the system of Swedish particle verbs. In the final part of the thesis I show parallels between Swedish verb particles and Czech verbal prefixes. These differ mainly in that the...
