Personal Deixis in the 2020 United States Presidential Election : An Analysis of Joe Biden’s and Donald Trump’s Political Speeches

Wisniewska, Monika January 2020 (has links)
The present study aims to explore how deictic personal pronouns are used in political speeches by the two American presidential candidates, Joe Biden and Donald Trump, during the 2020 United States presidential election. Donald Trump’s usage of the personal pronouns I, you, he/she, we and they is analysed and compared to Joe Biden’s usage of the same personal pronouns. The study has shown that Joe Biden has a preference for the first-person singular pronoun I while Donald Trump has a similar preference towards the third-person plural pronoun they. Both candidates also use the pronoun we just as often, however, Joe Biden’s we is mostly the universal we, referring to all Americans, while Donald Trump’s we is mostly the royal we, referring to his government. This study shows that the same deictic pronouns can be used to indicate inclusion and exclusion.

Trumpovské metafory: Vyobrazení Donalda Trumpa žánrem comedy news v průběhu amerických prezidentských voleb 2016 / The Trump Metaphors: Comedy News Portrayal of Donald Trump During the 2016 US Presidential Election

Králová, Petra January 2018 (has links)
This master's thesis deals with the implications of metaphorical language, which comedy news programs used to portray Donald Trump as a candidate during the 2016 US presidential election. First, the author outlines the most important moments of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, then introduces the comedy news genre as well as three comedy news programs - The Daily Show, Last Week Tonight and Real Time - which are included in the analytical part of the thesis. The thesis continues with the theoretical and methodological chapters, in which conceptual metaphor analysis based on the works of Lakoff, Johnson and Yanow is presented. The metaphor analysis itself, performed on 73 comedy news episodes, reveals that mostly the same metaphors were used across all three programs and they overwhelmingly portray Donald Trump as non-human. As the election kept approaching, Donald Trump was increasingly portrayed as "a natural disaster," "the apocalypse" or "the Devil." The author suggests that the overall tacit objective of the metaphors used in the three comedy news programs was to dehumanize Donald Trump. Finally, the limitations of the analysis are discussed and suggestions for further research on the implications of metaphorical language are made.

The "Viva Kennedy" Clubs in South Texas

Traffas, Joan 12 1900 (has links)
"This thesis analyzes the impact of the Mexican-American voters in south Texas on the 1960 presidential election. During that election year, this ethnic minority was strong enough to merit direct appeals from the Democratic presidential candidate, and subsequently, allowed to conduct a unique campaign divorced from the direct control of the conservative state Democratic machinery...The study of the Mexican-American political behavior in 1960 proceeds in three stages. The first chapter examines the political factionalism within the state Democratic Party suggest the conservative solution to the problem of liberal splinter groups, and evaluates Lyndon Johnson's contribution to the Democratic ticket in south Texas. Chapter II probes into the importance of imagery and indentity in politics, challenges the possibility of a religiously-based bloc vote in south Texas, but postulates the probability of a sub-conscious religious identification with the Democratic candidate. The last chapter describes the Valley 'Viva Kennedy' clubs, their origin, organization, activities, and contributions. To substantiate the author's hypothesis, oral interviews, club reports, personal files, letters, and contemporary newspapers were extensively used."-- leaf 1.

Niedermeierová, Jana January 2015 (has links)
The aim of the diploma thesis The Image of the Czech Politics in German and Austrian Daily Newspapers Illustrated by the Example of the Presidential Election in 2013 is to analyse the media coverage of the first direct presidential election in Czech Republic in 2013 in German and Austrian daily newspapers. German periodicals Frankfurter Rundschau, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Welt and Austrian newspapers Der Standard, Die Presse and Salzburger Nachrichten were chosen for the analysis. German and Austrian press paid extraordinary attention to this election mainly because of the topic of the expulsion of Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia after the Second World War, which was reopened during the pre-election discussions. Moreover, one candidate, the former Czech minister of foreign affairs Karel Schwarzenberg, spent most of his life in Austrian exile which was another reason for the German and Austrian media interest in this election. The diploma thesis analyses articles about Czech election that appeared in the selected newspapers in the period from January 1, 2013 to March 31, 2013. It focuses on the amount of space devoted to the topic in the selected newspapers and on the coverage of the election considering both content and formal aspects.
