Translation strategies for the Chinese culture-specific expressions in the Chinese Premier's press conferences

Dai, Lei January 2015 (has links)
This research is located within the framework of descriptive translation studies and corpus-based contrastive discourse analysis. Modern Translation Studies has growingly taken into account the complexities of culture-specific expressions in literary translation. Conference interpreting setting has paradoxically not been touched upon. Through an empirical case study of the interpretation of Chinese culture-specific expressions in ten Chinese Premier’s Press Conferences, this thesis aims to contribute to a better understanding of interpreting culture-specific expressions in a conference interpreting setting. Methodologically, this thesis integrates the linguistic approach with the culture-oriented approach, empiricism with interpretivism and quantitative with qualitative research. It began with a detailed transcription of ten unrevised press conference video recordings downloaded from Internet. With such transcription, the specialized corpora constituted by the Chinese culture-specific expressions and their interpretations were built and coded innovatively using the four translation strategies converted from the six kernel theories within the theoretical framework of this thesis. Contrastive discourse analysis of the specialized corpora was carried out against such extra-textual resources as the media coverage of the press conference, the lectures given by the government interpreters and so on. Translation norms that reflect the regularities of how the four translation strategies are used were derived from such large-scale case studies and tested against more cases before being qualitatively analyzed to explain why they exist and how they were manifested in the selection of translation strategies in the specialized corpora. This thesis claims contribution to existing literature in terms of theory and methodology. Theoretically, it proposed six translation norms of the use of four translation strategies for the five categories of the Chinese culture-specific expressions in the Chinese Premier’s Press Conferences with a core argument that the interpreters’ selection of translation strategies is subject more to contexts than to their subjectivity, which empirically confirms for the first time Eco-translatology Theory’s central claim that an interpreter selects translation strategies by adapting to contexts. In addition, as a pioneering study on cultural expressions under conference interpreting context, this research increases the explanatory power of relevant translation theories because it spans literary translation and conference interpreting. Methodologically, translation strategies were converted from relevant translation theories and used as descriptive categories for corpus-based contrastive analysis, which constitutes an originality in contrast to previous research that teem with researcher-named strategies and confuse translation strategies with translation methods. Furthermore, this research improves transcription coding and corpus building tactics, making data analysis not only more systematic but also more accessible to readers who do not know both languages.

Unexpected Turbulence: An Event Study of President Obama's June 29, 2011 Press Conference and Its Effect on Aircraft Manufacturers

Jiwanlal, Nathan A. 01 January 2012 (has links)
On June 29, 2011, President Barack Obama held a press conference regarding the nation's budget deficit. During the conference, President Obama mentioned corporate jet owners six times, criticizing their desire to maintain an accelerated depreciation tax break. The President's comments were met with strong criticism from aircraft manufacturers and members of the aviation community. Based on the underlying assumption that new information is rapidly incorporated into stock prices, the press conference likely had a negative impact on the stock returns of aircraft and aircraft parts manufacturers. This paper uses a financial events study to determine whether or not the press conference significantly hurt the stock prices of aircraft manufacturers.

Gestalta en pandemi : En gestaltningsanalys av Sveriges kriskommunikation under coronapandemin

Pettersson, Jonathan, Sjöström, Linus January 2022 (has links)
The covid-19 pandemic is one of the worst health crises in many decades, and it has put the Swedish government into a situation where crisis communication is needed. One of the primary tools for communication used by the Swedish government is press conferences. The aim of the study is to determine how the Swedish government has framed the pandemic through the press conferences. This will be done through a framing analysis. The study will also determine how the framing has changed through different phases of the crisis. A linguistic analysis was made on 20 press conferences published between February 24th 2020 and September 16th 2021 with a predetermined framework, theories in crisis communication and the CERC-model as base for the study. The predetermined framework is based on CDC and WHO recommendations in crisis communication and has been used in similar studies earlier.  The result of the study shows similar framing in all chosen press conferences from the pandemic. The frames Key messages to the public and Expression of empathy were two frames that could be identified in all press conferences. How the public can help, Clarification of facts, Actions currently being taken and Action that will be taken were frames that also could be identified in several press conferences, especially in specific phases of the pandemic. The signification of the frame was also something that changed through different phases, particularly Key messages to the public and Expression of empathy.

Prosody and cognition are the central subjects of the present work. The place of phonology in the formal representation of constructions is demanded, since phonological information is paired with semantic, syntactic and pragmatic information. From theoretical contributions of Cognitive Linguistic, the concept of phoneme is reviewed and reformulated with the notions of phoneme as an embodied category and phoneme as a constructional unit. For this new vision, it is fundamental a conception that involves the acquisition, the use and the frequency of language. To direct the attention for the suprassegmental level, it is emphasized the function that the prosody performs in the interpretation and management of meaning. One defends that there is a joint and coordinated action in the production of speech s melody. In order to analyze how the intonation can point out to the construction of meaning, an acoustics reading of data was accomplished through a computation program (PRAAT). The results of the submission of the data were described in order to observe the curves of fundamental frequency (F0) in the stretches that close the interviewed answers in the press conference. The work hypothesis is that the turn transition is configured by falling contours and one of the reasons for this is the deterioration of the subglotal pressure in the flow of the speech. Another point is that the action of vocal folds can be considered a particular case between the gestures produced by our physical and perceptual apparatus. From a metaphorical extension of the press conference's domain and the war's domain, it can be speculated the analogy between the gestures produced by the focal folds and the gestures of the arms in a combat.
