Relations between asylum seekers/refugees' belonging & identity formations and perceptions of the importance of UK press

Khan, Amadu Wurie January 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates asylum seekers/refugees’ orientations to belonging and identity. It is based on in-depth semi-structured interviews conducted among asylum seekers/refugees residing in Scotland between 2006 and 2008 and on a media monitoring of a number of UK newspapers. The interviews were analysed for interviewees’ orientations to feelings of belonging and identity with the UK, Scotland and homelands. They were also analysed for interviewees’ perceptions (beliefs and understandings) of newspapers’ reporting of asylum and importance to their sense of national belonging and national identity forming. The monitoring provided the context of newspapers’ reporting of asylum at the time of interviews. It enabled a small-scale examination of media content with reference to interviewees’ perceptions. The thesis explores two assumptions. Firstly, asylum seekers/refugees’ national belonging and national identity formations are complex and contingent upon their everyday ‘lived’ experiences. Secondly, asylum seekers/refugees’ belonging and identity formations, as social processes of citizenship, cannot be understood in isolation from the high visibility of the asylum issue in UK media. As an empirical study, therefore, its findings are deployed to critique policymaking, theoretical and media accounts of non-British citizens’ forms of belonging to, and identification with the British ‘nation’. It is suggested that, in addition to policymaking, there are other social circumstances that would facilitate ethnic minority migrants’ national belonging and national identity formations. These factors do not only account for the prioritising of Scottishness over Britishness, but also migrants’ ‘hyphenated’ identities. This thesis will therefore provide evidence suggesting that non-citizens (ethnic minorities), have their own meanings and agency of orientating to a feeling of national belonging and national identity that is nuanced and contingent on their experiences. The thesis does not aim to establish media causality. However, it highlights the fact that newspaper coverage can evoke responses from marginalised groups and provide the context from which identities are narrated and mobilised. The thesis will improve our understanding of the practices, meanings and contestations of belonging and identity that is grounded in the ‘lived’ experiences of noncitizens. This sociological dimension to ethnic minorities’ citizenship forming is not only poorly understood, but has been dominated by theoretical and policymaking accounts in the contemporary state.

Escovar, Maira Regina Garcia. January 2005 (has links)
Abstract: In Brazil, according to the research done, in the year 2002, by ANDI (Agency of News of Infancy's Rights), almost 4 million of young people with age is between 13 and 24 years ald become sexually actives a year.

Vania Maria Medeiros de Fazio Aguiar 25 April 2012 (has links)
Having observed the complex role of the Portuguese Language teacher in guiding the learners to look critically the different discourses inserted into the journalistic sphere, this paper was proposed, based on the Bakhtinian theory, in order to observe the dialogical relations among opinionated statements press media, the presumed reader and the socio-historical context. Through the relationship between some aspects of different enunciations like editorial, opinion article, charge and illustration, this work intends to promote a distinguished look over theses speeches, providing the student the knowledge of contemporary language forms, to improve them as human being, as expected by the PCN (National Curriculum Parameters), as well as enabling their studies progress. Besides Bakhtins dialogical theory and his Circle, due to the analytical needs, several theoretical conceptions were applied, related to the press media production, based on Charaudeau (2010) and Melo (2003), and to the verbal-visual language analysis, according to Dondis (2007). The harmony and asymmetry between the utterances were observed through the cross-evaluation of different points of view and the evaluative tone adopted in each of them. It was also observed in the verbal-visual images the meaning relations with the written text, revealing the social-historical relation that involves them, as well as they respond to the presumed newspaper reader and to the immediate context. For analysis, it were selected editorial and its corresponding illustration from Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, dated January 9th 2011, one week after Dilma Rousseff assumed Brazilian presidency, which speech led to various topics on womens achievements. It was also chosen opinion article and charge from March 18th 2011 about Barack Obamas visit to Brazil, which led to different topics about the relationship among Brazil and the United States of America. It is expected that this study, developed under the dialogic perspective of the language, will provide to the education professional suggestions for media language analysis, in order to enable students critical judgment over the opinions presented by the press media, as well as to stimulate future researches in the Applied Linguistic field.

Mediální obraz pražského jara a nastupující normalizace ve vybraných východočeských tištěných médiích / Media image of the Prague Spring and beginning of the normalization in selected east bohemian printed media

Vlasáková, Kristýna January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis named Media image of the Prague Spring and beginning of normalization in selected East Bohemian print media shows the impact of Prague spring and beginning of normalization on chosen East Bohemian print media. Those are regional newspaper Pochoden, district newspaper Zar and magazine Spiritus, which was created and published by students of University of Chemical Technology in Pardubice city. Both regional newspaper Pochoden and district newspaper Zar were organs of Communist party of Czechoslovakia. For better understanding how big the change was I also worked with these three newspapers during the years 1967 and 1969 (beginning of normalization), so readers can understand how much the writing and content of media evolved during the year 1968. When possible (signed article) I tried to focuse on each journalist and his or hers evolve during analysed years. I was focusing not only on articles written by journalists, but during this time the newspapers published letters from readers, so I can compare which letters were published in 1967, 1968 and 1969. I have chosen this theme because I was born and raised at East Bohemia and my bachelor thesis worked with similar topic (Media image of the Velvet Revolution in Pardubice city), only this time I do not focus solely on Pardubice city....

"Republiku si rozvracet nedáme" - třetí odboj v československých médiích / "We Will Not Let Our Republic Be Disrupted!" - Third Resistance in The Czechoslovak Media

Dordová, Alžběta January 2020 (has links)
This thesis is focused on the topic of media use in a system of a communist totality. It provides an analysis of presentation of selected characters directly or indirectly involved in activities of the anti-communist, so called third resistance, in the Czechoslovak press media of that era. By using the interpretation of results of semiotic analysis of selected news and publicistic articles the author of the thesis attempts to answer the research questions and confirm or disconfirm the hypothesis that communist press media used the above mentioned cases particularly for the promotion of the official ideology. Political and medial contexts as well as brief life-stories of the chosen third resistance representatives are outlined in the theoretical part of the thesis, while the analysis with the interpretation of its results are discussed in the practical part. The conclusion of the analysis confirms that the communist press media associated those representatives with predominantly negative connotations and that the meanings of all the selected articles were strongly affected by propagandistic elements.

A representação do movimento estudantil paulista na mídia impressa: um estudo histórico-discursivo / The representation of São Paulo student movement in the press: a discourse-historical study

Vieira, Aline Magna de Aguiar 24 September 2018 (has links)
The Student Movement, from the 1960s onwards, started to play a prominent role in Brazil\'s political sphere since its representative organizations, such as the União Nacional dos Estudantes and the União Estadual dos Estudantes, were established and their ideological positions very often confronted the dominant political order. Thus, several actions led by the Student Movement throughout its history were highlighted in the national media, in particular in São Paulo\'s press, as its most influential and widespread acts have predominantly taken place in the southeast region of the country. Among the numerous actions of the Movement in São Paulo, two demonstrations stand out as resistance to the socio-political changes that occurred during the military regime: the Batalha da Maria Antonia (1968) and the PUC-SP Invasion (1997); in parallel, considering the University of São Paulo\'s relevancein the Brazilian academic scenery at the present time, we highlight a Student act that had a big impact in the media in the beginning of this decade: the Reintegração de posse da Reitoria of this institution (2011), after a Student Occupation. That said, this research aims to analyze the representation of the main social factors involved in the aforementioned student protests, in these two distinct historical periods. To this end, this study takes a corpus composed of articles published in thelarge-circulation newspapers Estado de S. Paulo and Folha de S. Paulo, dating from the subsequent day from the selected events. The methodology of this study is presented, initially, by a synchronic quantitative and comparative analysis between the two newspapers and, later on, seeks to trace aspects of discursive trends regarding the representation of the acts of the Student Movement according to the look of journalism through the correlation between linguistic patterns and historical contextual factors. For this purpose, the theoretical framework of Social History was taken into account to give an account of the contextualization of the object , Semiolinguistic to understand the functioning of the language act and discourse and of Systemic-Functional Linguistics (to undertake the linguistic analysis through the system of TRANSITIVITY. Through this discussion, it was possible to establish continuities and discontinuities in the representation of the relevant social actors in terms of their role as Actors, Goal, Sayer and Senser throughout time and between newspapers.
