El nacionalcatolicisme franquista, ha sigut substituït per un patriotisme democràtic espanyol? Aquesta tesi explora, mitjançant l'anàlisi del cas espanyol, com els estats establerts promouen i dónen forma a la identitat nacional de llurs ciutadans, i com això es reflecteix al nivell individual. La tesi aprofita la recent transició a la democràcia i les diferències internes del cas com a oportunitats per guanyar possibilitats d'anàlisi de la dinàmica de canvi en la identitat nacional en paral·lel als canvis en el context polític. Al llarg de la tesi s'empra una àmplia varietat de fonts I mètodes de recerca: Anàlisi de fonts documentals i literatura secundària, metodologia Q i anàlisi estadística de dades d'enquesta provinents tant d'enquestes preexistents (ISSP, WVS, CIS) com d'una enquesta pròpia realitzada el gener de 2007. Els resultats mostren com l'evolució dels discursos polítics sobre la nació espanyola han condicionat les actituds dels ciutadans, en un procés de reconstrucció incompleta de la identitat nacional espanyola.

By using Austen’s and Bushnell’s two novels as my primary sources I hope to find out whether what has been seen as typically female themes, plots and settings are perceived as less important from a canonical viewpoint. Do the terms “chick-lit” and “women’s literature” determine the status of a novel? I hope to find out what made Austen an esteemed writer and if the same criteria of evaluation can be applied to Bushnell. Are there any similarities between today’ most famous “chick-lit” author who gained her fame by writing about women and their sex lives in an unromantic and shocking fashion, and a pre-Victorian author whose works are part of the literary canon?

Critics of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice often tend to focus on the central characters but focus in this essay will be on the middle sister Mary Bennet. Author Alex Woloch claims in his book The One vs. the Many that Mary’s main function in the novel is to be a contrast to Elizabeth in order to fulfill her as a character. The purpose of this essay is then to show that Mary is an important character and what it is that makes Mary’s character different from her sisters’. A close reading of the novel has been applied in order to analyze Mary’s character and her function in the novel. The essay will show that Mary could be read as a representation of the women of her time who had more faith in themselves than to rely on men in order to have a secure future.

<p>Distributed real-time databases can be used to support data sharing</p><p>for applications in wireless ad-hoc networks. In such networks, topology changes frequently and partitions may be unpredictable and last for an unbounded period. In this thesis, the existing database replication protocol PRiDe is extended to handle such long-lasting partitions. The protocol uses optimistic and detached replication to provide predictable response times in unpredictable networks and forward conflict resolution to guarantee progress.</p><p>The extension, pPRiDe, combines update and state transfer strategies. Update transfer for intra-partition communication can reduce bandwidth usage and ease conflict resolution. State transfer for inter partition conflicts removes dependency on a common state between partitions prior to the merge to apply update messages on. This makes the resource usage independent of the life span of partitions. This independence comes at the cost of global data stability guarantees and pPRiDe can thus only provide per partition guarantees. The protocol supports application specific conflict resolution routines for both</p><p>state and update conflicts. A basic simulator for mobile ad-hoc networks has been developed to validate that pPRiDe provides eventual consistency.</p><p>pPRiDe shows that a hybrid approach to change propagation strategy can be beneficial in networks where collaboration by data sharing within long lasting partitions and predictable resource usage is necessary. These types of systems already require the conflict management routines necessary for pPRiDe and can benefit from an existing protocol.</p><p>In addition to pPRiDe and the simulator this thesis provides a flexible object database suitable for future works and an implementation of PRiDe on top of that database.</p>

Although existing cross-border M&A research suggests that national pride is associated with higher bid premiums, the underlying rationale behind these national pride bids is unclear. We study two plausible explanations for this phenomenon: payment for a prearranged expansion strategy (real options) and bidders’ lack of experience in a target country (organization learning). Using a sample of cross-border acquisitions of developed-country targets by developing-country acquirers, we perform an extensive media search to identify 36 acquisitions that involve national pride. We divide these 36 acquisitions into those with zero bids completed in that particular country prior to the national pride bid (non-foothold bidders) and those with at least one bid completed in that country before the national pride acquisition (foothold bidders). We find that the higher premium paid in so-called national pride bids is primarily attributable to the non-foothold acquirers. Since non-foothold characteristics can proxy for either lack of experience or higher value of embedded real options, or both, we perform further tests which confirm that the higher premium of national pride bids can be attributed to both channels, supporting both organizational learning theory and real options explanation. We further demonstrate that national pride acquirers underperform operationally post-acquisition, and such underperformance is also attributable to the non-foothold acquirers. One explanation for this finding is the lack of prior acquisition experience of non-foothold bidders.

This study examines whether Tribal Colleges and Universities impact hope and pride within their surrounding communities. As part of the investigation, data was gathered through the distribution of a ten question survey to three participants at both Diné College and Comanche Nation College: the president, a student, and a community member. Further data was collected through testimonials gathered from articles within the Tribal College Journal from the past six years (2008-2013). The goal of the study is to broaden the understanding of Tribal College and University impacts within their communities, and to provide valuable information for the college-community relationship throughout Indian Country.
