Spatial Heterogeneity of Ecosystem Metabolism in a Shallow WetlandRackliffe, Daniel Riley 01 December 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Spatial heterogeneity in ecosystem metabolism may play a critical role in determining ecosystem functions. Variation in ecosystem metabolism between macrophyte patches in shallow wetlands at the extremes of freshwater habitats has not been investigated. We estimated ecosystem metabolism in mesocosms containing different macrophytes using 24-hour oxygen curves to test our hypotheses: (1) net aquatic production (NAP) during spring and summer would be similar among algal patches (metaphyton and Chara), (2) NAP in algal patches would be greater than patches dominated by the vascular plant Potamogeton foliosus, (3) heterotrophy and anaerobiosis would be greatest in patches dominated by Lemna, and (4) the pond would be autotrophic in the spring and fall but heterotrophic in the summer. We found that different patches generated differences in NAP but not always as we predicted. NAP was different among algal patches in the spring and summer, and only metaphyton was more heterotrophic than P. foliosus. In the summer Chara and Lemna patches were heterotrophic and metaphyton became autotrophic. As predicted, the pond was net autotrophic in the spring and heterotrophic in the summer with an absence of patchiness in fall attributed to the dominance of Lemna. This research suggests the importance of macrophyte patchiness in wetlands in determining patterns of ecosystem metabolism despite challenges in measuring 24 hour oxygen curves (e.g. oxygen supersaturation). Consequently, macrophyte traits may be important in determining spatial heterogeneity of ecosystem metabolism in shallow ponds.

In Burkina Faso and elsewhere in Africa and in the world, children, women and men are hungry because they can not get food daily to meet their energy needs; this, because of the scarcity and high cost of basic food products in these countries.
And yet, given the predominance of subsistence agriculture, agricultural policy and a good education with performance conditions that attract young people leaving to the main production of cereals, the staple food of most of these countries would to achieve self-sufficiency and food security.
Through the analysis of the external efficiency of rural promotion center (CPR) Goundi Burkina Faso, the present research was based on the sociological dimensions, counseling and psychoprofessionnelle to identify contextual and individual determinants whose management account in agricultural policies and vocational training for young farmers could help outgoing fit best in that employment as principal grain.
The main results show: the exit age between 21 and 34 years of age, marital status, gender, installation rituals, grains as a staple food, access to land and the equipment outside the center, father, promotionnaire, wives and children as factors significantly related to the main job insertion grain the sociological and socio-psychological level. In psychoprofessionnel plan, autonomy, initiative, intimacy, courage, determination, industry, passion, non-market logic, the vision of continuity and ideal ego are the main results. The difficult access to land, equipment and inputs and integration problems in group and family are the obstacles of this insertion.

I e II. / Vertical and temporal aspectos of the variability of phytoplankton primary production and biomass at a fixed station in São Sebastião (SP) coastal region.Correa, Flavia Marisa Prado Saldanha 03 June 1993 (has links)
The vertical mixing of the rich, low temperature, deep South Atlantic Central Water (SACW), with the low nutrient, low phytoplanktonic biomass and hiSh temperature Coastal Water (CW), irom Ubatuba region, was simulated erforming bioassays. The waters were incubated with the authoctonous phytoplankton without any nutrient addition, under ifferent attenuation levels (100, 30 and 10% ) of the total incident solar radiation and at the same temperature as the urface sea water. The chemical and biological potential of each water (SACW and CW), and of an equivalent mixture of them, wa evaluated by means of a daily monitoring of quali and quantitative phytoplankton aspects (Chl-a, cell counting and photosynthetic rates) and of the dissolved nutrient concentrations durins the incubation period. Three series of experiments were performed: Jul/88, Jan/89 and Jul/89, lasting 8, 15 and 14 days espectively. The mixing of SACW and CW presented the best maximum yield oi chlorophyll and photosyntetic rates under 100 and 30% solar radiation. Under 10% SACW alone waa more productive than mixed with CW and, considering integral chlorophyll-a during the whole period. it preaented a higher yield than the one obtained with Mixed Water under 100% oí solar radiation. CW preaented the lowest yield under the experimental light leveI used. Under high light intensi ties nutrients were quickly assimilated inducing a bloom of opportunist species (diatoms) at the begining of the incubation period, which was not observed under low light intensities.(diatoms) at the begining of the incubation period, which was not observed under low light intensities. Results also indicate that the Ias times observed during winter were ignificantIy higher than those during summer. It was possible to observe the existence of a Physiological atratification among phytoplank.tonic populations from the same water mass, as a function of depht, durins winter. This phenomenon was probably due to diatinct nutricional aupply of orsanic origen that would be avaiIabIe to deep populations only, possibly as a consequence of ater/sediment interactiona. These results demonstrate the great importance of SACW as a fertilizer agent to the oligothrophic waters of the region, allowing the occurrence of new production.

Phytoplankton Ecology of Lake Kivu (Eastern Africa)/ Écologie du phytoplancton du lac Kivu (Afrique de l'Est)Sarmento, Hugo 29 September 2006 (has links)
With a volcanic origin, Lake Kivu is deep and meromictic, and shows a very particular limnology and some astonishing features. The data available on its limnology and phytoplanktic communities are limited, dispersed or outdated. This is the first deep, long term study (2002-2004) on limnology and phytoplankton ecology of Lake Kivu, combining different techniques: HPLC analysis of marker pigments, flow cytometry, light, epifluorescence and electron microscopy. Lake Kivu combines a relatively shallow euphotic layer (~18m) usually smaller than its mixed layer (20 – 60 m), and with a weak thermal gradient in the mixolimnion. With an annual average chlorophyll a in the mixed layer of 2.2 mg m-3 and low nutrient levels in the euphotic zone, the lake is clearly oligotrophic. Concerning its phytoplanktonic composition, the most common species were the pennate diatoms Nitzschia bacata Hust. and Fragilaria danica (Kütz.) Lange Bert., and the cyanobacteria Planktolyngbya limnetica (Lemm.) Komárková-Legnerová and Cronberg and Synechococcus sp. Diatoms were the dominant group in the lake, particularly during the dry season episodes of deep mixing. During the rainy season, the stratified water column, with high light and lower nutrient availability, favoured dominance of cyanobacteria. Phycoerythrin-rich phototrophic picoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria cell numbers were constantly high, with relatively subtle spatial, seasonal and vertical variations. In open lake waters, where allochthonous carbon inputs are most probably inconsequential, HNA heterotrophic bacteria abundance is strongly correlated with chlorophyll a. Recent investigations revealed an increasing methane production in the deep waters during the past three decades, leading to an accumulation of gas and the subsequent lowering of the energy required to trigger a devastating release of gasses. The role of primary producers and the probable changes on the export ratio of the organic matter into deep waters after the introduction of the planktivorous sardine from Lake Tanganyika Limnothrissa miodon, is discussed. The actual primary production, 0.71 g C m-2 d-1 (~ 260 g C m-2 y-1), doesn’t seem substantially different from some punctual measurements made in the past, which discards the hypothesis of anthropogenic eutrophication. We believe that the export ratio of organic matter into the deep waters was largely affected by biological changes that could explain part of the methane increase in the past 30 years in Lake Kivu.
