The thesis aims to observe the industrial design profession and to study the role of industrial designer in Turkish industry. Through an electronic questionnaire investigating the manufacturers&rsquo / and designers&rsquo / opinions about how industrial design practice is perceived and how industrial designers are utilized in Turkey it was possible to examine the current roles of industrial designers and to evaluate the status of industrial design profession. The survey also investigated how the industrial designer or the design team is situated in new product development process, and in the corporate hierarchy, what kind of investments have been made in the last decades by manufacturers in Turkey on industrial design.

Performance measurement in the product development process

The intention of the programme was to evaluate Product Development (PD) strategies within the automotive industry and to identify areas in which improvements could be made in PD project performance that would also provide a business opportunity for the author's employer RLE International (RLE). The research is principally concerned with the automotive industry but also has broader applications within similar industries. The research was undertaken via three projects. Project 1 involved a study of the structure, drivers and trends within the automotive industry. The aim was to assess the implications for PD in the automotive industry and identify significant issues where opportunities for improvement existed. The outcome was a portrayal of an industry under extreme competitive pressure and waiting for something to change but without a clear future state. What was apparent was that the competitive pressures, and thus the need to deliver more products without significantly increased resources, were not going to abate in the near future. PD has to 'deliver more with less' but a definition of success and its associated measures in terms of the PD process is difficult to frame. Therefore, the aim of project 2 focused on performance measurement of the PD process by assessing four internationally diverse development projects carried out by the author's employer with four discrete customers. The projects were all different in their content and were carried out in different countries, i.e. USA, Germany, India and Sweden. Whilst customer specific and cultural aspects of the projects differed, the significant issue identified via the research was common across all the projects. Traditional Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of cost, time and scope were used but failed to predict issues in project delivery. The key finding was that if project information did not flow as originally planned then resources were wasted resulting in time and cost over-runs. Project 3 researched alternative solutions to the issue of monitoring information flow and proposes a specific method of indicating the likelihood of success in a project by identifying new PD measurement techniques to be used within the automotive PD process. This new measurement criterion of information flow provides a predictive tool that significantly enhances the project control process. The predictive method of information flow tracking developed is new to the automotive PD profession. It was trialled on an existing project and was shown to identify specific issues with the Work-in-Progress (WIP) not found by traditional project management methods. The resulting indication of issues enabled the organisation's management to have a substantially different insight and understanding of project performance at a given point in time and therefore enabled immediate changes in resource allocation to improve project performance. The implementation of these changes as a result of the adoption of information flow monitoring resulted in significantly improved project KPI performance. The contribution of this new PD management method has the potential to significantly impact the competitiveness of any company involved in the design and development process. Its benefits include improved understanding of project performance indicators, powerful predictive attributes resulting in better utilisation of company resources and reductions in both project costs and lead times.

Designing for the Unknown : Exploring Urban Mining as a case study

The earth’s resources are limited; with the speed that humanity are using earth’s resources today, we would need 1.5 times of the earth’s regenerative capacity to compensate for what we use. Raw materials has since a long time ago been mined from the bedrock, which affects the earth in a negative way. If we could use materials and products that are circulating in our society, but are not being used and thereby considered as waste, traditional mining could be replaced with urban mining. Imagine what would happen if earth’s resources would be limited by laws and regulations in the future; mining as it is known today would not be allowed and there would be a need of resources that is gathered in another way, an unknown way. The world is constantly changing and this results in the fact that there will always be unexplored areas that needs to be defined and developed to be able to handle the changes in the future. Considering the fact that urban mining is such an unexplored field, there is a need of creating a process to define the segment in order to develop product/services within it. The outcome of this thesis is therefore recommendations for how a generic design process can be tailored and implemented for innovation development in undefined areas. The result is reached through investigating a development project, which focuses in the research area urban mining, as a case study and also by studying design processes in theory. The investigation is conducted with an explorative approach by observing the field and sub-fields of urban mining. This thesis shows that drivers and trends for urban mining exist, and that there is a future need to capitalize this market. The result also shows that the most important characteristics of the design process when designing for the unknown, is the fact that defining the research area requires even more effort when dealing with an initially unknown field, compared with known research areas. / Jordens resurser är begränsade; med den hastighet som mänskligheten använder jordens resurser idag, skulle vi behöva 1,5 gånger jordens återhämtningsförmåga för att kompensera för det vi använder. Råmaterial har sedan länge brutits från berggrunden, vilket påverkar jorden på ett negativt sätt. Om vi istället skulle kunna använda material och produkter som cirkulerar i vårt samhälle, men inte används och därmed betraktas som avfall, skulle traditionell materialutvinning kunna ersättas med urban mining. Tänk vad som skulle hända om jordens resurser i framtiden begränsas genom lagar och regler; materialutvinning som det är känt idag inte skulle tillåtas och det då skulle finnas ett behov att samla resurser på ett annat sätt, ett idag okänt sätt. Världen förändras ständigt vilket resulterar i det faktum att det alltid kommer att finnas outforskade områden som måste definieras och utvecklas för att kunna hantera dessa förändringar i framtiden. Urban mining är ett sådant outforskat område och därför finns det ett behov av att skapa en process för att definiera segmentet och på så vis kunna utveckla produkter och tjänster inom området. Resultatet av denna uppsats är därför rekommendationer för hur en allmän design process kan skräddarsys och implementeras för innovativ utveckling i odefinierade områden. Resultatet uppnås genom att analysera ett utvecklingsprojekt, som fokuserar på forskningsområdet urban mining, som en fallstudie, samt att studera designprocesser i teorin. Undersökningen genomförs med ett explorativt tillvägagångssätt genom att utföra observationer inom ämnet urban mining. Arbetet visar att drivfaktorer och trender för urban mining existerar och att det finns ett framtida behov att utforska och dra fördel av denna marknad. Resultatet visar också att de viktigaste egenskaperna hos design processen vid utveckling inom okända områden är det faktum att forskningsområdet kräver ännu större fokus på att definiera området, jämfört med kända forskningsområden.

Supporting customer focused design in the assistive technology industry

Assistive technologies (AT) are the products provided to elderly and disabled people to enable them to live more independently. Despite their ability to help maintain independence and prevent injury, the literature discussed within this thesis indicates that assistive technologies are not meeting the needs of the end-user. In response, research has been undertaken with the following objectives: 1. To identify how and why assistive technology products are failing to satisfy the customer. 2. To establish if a design tool can be created that overcomes the issues identified in the inductive research and which enables companies to design customer-satisfying assistive technology products. In progressing these objectives, two phases of research were planned. The first comprised four parallel studies (focus groups, case studies, questionnaires and a literature study), which together examined the state of AT products and the product-development activities of AT manufacturers. The second phase of research examined four customer-focused product design methods for their suitability for utilisation by small companies within the AT sector. On finding that no method in its entirety was suitable, a customer-focused design tool for small AT companies was developed. The resulting tool comprises eight elements for application in the initial stages of the product development process. The tool was tested in four separate studies, which examined its usability and acceptability to AT companies and which gave further insights into the AT sector. The research both finds that AT products are failing the customer in five areas and that manufacturers are contributing to this failure through a lack of customer-focus in their design processes. In addition to identifying the market research and product development activities of small AT companies, a key contribution to knowledge resulting from the research is the concept of sectoral readiness for methods of design. In its conclusion the thesis finds that the two research objectives have been met.

The expansion of agricultural machinery and equipment sector, increase the competition among manufacturers and forcing the development of more complex products and greater efficiency in production processes. This reality demands, from enterprises, greater formalism of the product development process, with design and manufacturing aimed at launching new technologies. In this work, was performed the identification of companies, micro, small and medium-sized manufacturers of agricultural machinery and implements, located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, to develop the design and manufacture of such equipments. With the identification and selection of ten companies, was taken a descriptive exploratory study of multiple cases, which the information was collected, through interviews with the owners and/or responsible for the product development sector, for diagnosis and modeling methodology currently practiced in the development process of agricultural machinery, providing the information necessary for the preparation of the Reference Model for Agricultural Machines Development Process for Small and Medium-sized enterprises. / A expansão do setor de máquinas e implementos agrícolas aumentou a concorrência entre os fabricantes, exigindo o desenvolvimento de produtos mais complexos e com maior eficiência nos processos produtivos. Esta realidade exige, das empresas, maior formalismo do processo de desenvolvimento de produtos, com projeto e fabricação, voltados ao lançamento de novas tecnologias. Assim, neste trabalho, realizou-se a identificação de empresas, de micro, pequeno e médio porte, fabricantes de máquinas e implementos agrícolas, sediadas no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, que desenvolvem o projeto e a fabricação destes equipamentos. Com a identificação e seleção de dez empresas, foi realizada uma pesquisa exploratória descritiva de múltiplos casos, onde foram coletadas as informações, através de entrevistas com os proprietários e/ou responsáveis pelo setor de desenvolvimento de produtos, para o diagnóstico e modelagem da metodologia atualmente praticada no processo de desenvolvimento de máquinas agrícolas, fornecendo as informações necessárias para a elaboração do Modelo de Referência para o Processo de Desenvolvimento de Máquinas Agrícolas para Empresas de Pequeno e Médio Porte, objeto deste trabalho.

The competitive capacity within a certain sector, is the determining factor in determining whether a company has the potential to continue in the market or not. In this sense, the agricultural machinery sector, seeking to remain competitive, seeks best practices for the organization and management of its product development processes. These well-defined and managed processes can help sustain a company's competitiveness. The Product Development Process is approached in this work taking into account its multidisciplinarity, considering the importance of the participation of several functional areas for the management and the efficient performance of the process. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to identify and evaluate the cooperation of the functional areas in agricultural machinery development processes. To obtain the objective, a detailed study was carried out on the industrial segment of agricultural machinery, especially in the methodologies used for the development of its products, in order to know the intervening factors of these processes in a broad and detailed manner. We selected the Reference Model for the Agricultural Machinery Development Process as a starting point, where the functional areas described in this model were used to analyze two other models of the product development process large multinational companies, agricultural machinery manufacturers. In order to identify the cooperation of the functional areas throughout the phases and activities of the studied models, structures were developed in the form of electronic spreadsheets that sought to intersect the activities and areas of each model, making it possible to identify the level of participation of the functional areas in each phase the process. With the study of the phases and activities of the models, it was observed that it is necessary the cooperation of specific knowledge from certain functional areas for the development of agricultural machinery, making these activities be performed by several functional areas, giving agility to the process and thus collaborating to meet deadlines, so that the costs of manufacturing comply with the estimate in the project and so that the quality of the final product is as expected. / A capacidade competitiva, dentro de um determinado setor, é o fator determinante para definir se uma empresa tem potencial para continuar no mercado ou não. Neste sentido, o setor de máquinas agrícolas, buscando se manter competitivo, procura por melhores práticas para a organização e o gerenciamento de seus processos de desenvolvimento de produtos. Estes processos quando bem definidos e gerenciados, podem ajudar a sustentar a competitividade de uma empresa. O Processo de Desenvolvimento de Produto é abordado neste trabalho levando em consideração sua multidisciplinaridade, visto a importância da participação de várias áreas funcionais para o gerenciamento e o desempenho eficiente do processo. Assim, o objetivo desta dissertação é identificar e avaliar a cooperação das áreas funcionais em processos de desenvolvimento de máquinas agrícolas. Para auferir o objetivo realizou-se o estudo aprofundado sobre o segmento industrial de máquinas agrícolas, sobretudo nas metodologias utilizadas para o desenvolvimento de seus produtos, com a finalidade de conhecer os fatores intervenientes destes processos de forma ampla e detalhada. Foi selecionado para este trabalho o Modelo de Referência para o Processo de Desenvolvimento de Máquinas Agrícolas como ponto de partida, onde foram utilizadas as áreas funcionais descritas neste modelo para analisar outros dois modelos de processo de desenvolvimento de produto de empresas multinacionais de grande porte, fabricantes de máquinas agrícolas. Para identificar a cooperação das áreas funcionais, ao longo das fases e atividades dos modelos estudados, foram elaboradas estruturas em forma de planilhas eletrônicas visando interseccionar as atividades e as áreas de cada modelo, possibilitando identificar o nível de participação das áreas funcionais em cada fase do processo. Com o estudo das fases e atividades dos modelos, observou-se que é necessária a cooperação de conhecimentos específicos oriundos de determinadas áreas funcionais para o desenvolvimento de máquinas agrícolas, fazendo com que estas atividades sejam desempenhadas por várias áreas funcionais, dando agilidade para o processo e colaborando assim para o cumprimento de prazos, para que os custos de fabricação obedeçam ao estimado no projeto e para que a qualidade do produto final seja a esperada.

In this scenario, the product development process (PDP) has been of paramount importance. With its multidisciplinary characteristic, it articulates simultaneously different rationalities and actors who have built on very different interpretations of their real work. Interventions aiming to enhance the PDP performance inside an organization focus on the evaluation and modification of the prescribed work. When this is the approach, they limit their scope on the evaluation of the procedures and stated workflows and use a deterministic assumption which imposes just one single way to have the work done. This research proposes the Activity Theory as an adequate theoretical framework to deal with work redesign and shed light on the results from a case study where the first stage of the PDP was studied. We concluded that the activity system model proposed by Engeström identifies and reveals contradictions, which once in the equation, can really enhance PDP performance. / A crescente competitividade no segmento de autopeças tem impulsionado as empesas a buscarem, cada vez mais intensamente, resultados crescentes. Nesse cenário, surge como protagonista, o processo de desenvolvimento de produto (PDP), de caráter multidisciplinar, articulando simultaneamente racionalidades diferentes e atores que possuem diferentes interpretações da realidade. Intervenções que objetivam melhorar o desempenho do PDP dentro da organização concentram-se na avaliação e modificação das prescrições desses processos. Dessa forma lançam mão de um pressuposto determinista que modela uma verdade sobre como o trabalho deva ser realizado e que invariavelmente está distante do trabalho realmente executado. Este trabalho propõe a teoria da atividade como um quadro teórico para ser aplicado ao projeto e/ou à reorganização do trabalho e traz resultados desta aplicação para a fase inicial do projeto de desenvolvimento de novos produtos em uma empresa transnacional do segmento de autopeças. Conclui-se que o modelo de atividade proposto por Engeström identifica e revela tensões que quando equacionadas permitem a melhora do desempenho.

Other factors led to competitiveness growth among food companies, such as: the development of new technology, and consumers knowledge and expectation level increase. Therefore, food companies were forced to seek for competitive advantage which allowed the differentiation of their products in the market. In this context, product development process (PDP) gains fundamental importance. Due to the importance of PDP in the food industry, this work seeks characterize the food product development process management. Besides, this work aims to characterize the capability to PDP. In order to reach these purposes, eight food companies and three organizations (ITAL, SENAI, and a consultant company) that backup food industry were studied. Three food companies were chosen out of the eight which were studied and were presented in this work. The chosen companies have a more structured PDP, which allows a discussion on capability building process. The findings showed that food companies follow a sequence of phases and activities during PDP. This sequence is very similar when food companies are compared with each other and with the theoretical background. Concerning capability, food companies see capability building restrict to courses, and to market fairs visiting. The organizations that backup food industry serve mainly small companies, which do not have either enough technical or managerial knowledge in order to develop a product. Therefore, we consider that food product development process management is based on technical aspects. However, a minimal of managerial structure has been started by the companies. Besides, the need to develop new products tends to make food companies put in resources to build capability. / Na década de 90, a abertura do mercado brasileiro à importação marca o início da reestruturação da indústria brasileira de alimentos. Outros acontecimentos também contribuíram para o crescimento da concorrência entre as empresas de alimentos, como o desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias e o aumento do nível de conhecimento e de expectativas dos consumidores. Portanto, as empresas foram obrigadas a buscar vantagens competitivas que possibilitassem a diferenciação de seus produtos no mercado. Nesse contexto, o processo de desenvolvimento de produto (PDP) passou a ter fundamental importância. Considerando a importância do PDP na indústria de alimentos, este trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar a gestão do processo de desenvolvimento de produto em empresas da indústria de alimentos. Além disso, este trabalho visa caracterizar a capacitação para o PDP. Para que os objetivos fossem alcançados, foram realizados estudos de caso em oito empresas alimentícias e em três instituições (ITAL, SENAI e uma empresa de consultoria) de apoio à indústria de alimentos. Das oito empresas pesquisadas, foram selecionadas três para apresentação e análise dos resultados. As empresas selecionadas possuem o PDP mais bem estruturado, possibilitando uma discussão acerca da capacitação para esse processo. Como resultado, foi constatado, que as empresas de alimentos seguem uma seqüência de fases e atividades no PDP. Essa seqüência é bastante similar tanto na comparação entre empresas, quanto na comparação com a literatura. Quanto à capacitação, as empresas de alimentos vêem a construção da capacitação para o PDP limitada a cursos e treinamentos, e a visitas a feiras. As instituições de apoio prestam serviços principalmente a pequenas empresas, que não possuem conhecimento técnico e gerencial necessário ao desenvolvimento de produto. Conclui-se que a gestão do PDP alimentício é muito baseada no aspecto técnico. Porém, um mínimo de estruturação para gestão já foi iniciado pelas empresas. Além disso, a necessidade de desenvolver novos produtos tende a fazer com que as empresas de alimentos aloquem recursos para a construção da capacitação.

Through the integration of product and process in the PDP and the elimination of wastes in the process, it is possible to achieve a reduction of time-to-market and a better performance of the product in terms of quality and cost. In this context, this research aims to apply the value stream mapping (VSM) to the development of food products, in order to have an improved process through the reduction of waste. The study was carried out in a large company located in the state of Paraíba that has been operating for 65 years in the food sector. For this, an action research was conducted to allow the critical analysis of the current PDP model used by the company and the further implementation of an improved model. The results indicated that the organization had a PDP very similar to the reference models of the food sector, but it presented several wastes that hinder its evolution. From the mapping of the current model, a future model was proposed in ideal conditions, which confirmed, after its application, the lead time reduction of the process and proved to be feasible, useful and user-friendly. It was still possible to observe other driving factors in the new PDP of the company, which were the change of the working environment and the improvement in the interdepartmental relationships, supported by information technology, which started to play a significant role in the process. Another relevant finding to the research field was the confirmation of the applicability of VSM in the food product development process, given the lack of studies in the literature with this approach. / Processo de Desenvolvimento de Produtos (PDP) é um fator crítico de sucesso para qualquer empresa que se propõe a competir por meio da criação e da introdução de produtos novos no mercado em busca da vantagem competitiva. É através da integração entre produto e processo no PDP e da eliminação de perdas no processo que se garante uma redução do time-to-market e um melhor desempenho do produto em termos de qualidade e custo. Neste contexto, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo aplicar o mapeamento do fluxo de valor (MFV) no desenvolvimento de produtos alimentícios, com o objetivo de melhoria do processo por meio da redução de desperdícios. O estudo foi realizado em uma empresa de grande porte localizada no Estado da Paraíba que atua há 65 anos no segmento do setor de alimentos. Para isso, foi conduzida uma pesquisa-ação para permitir a análise crítica do modelo atual de PDP utilizado pela empresa e a posterior implementação de um modelo melhorado. Os resultados indicaram que a organização estudada possuía um PDP muito semelhante aos modelos de referência do setor, porém apresentava vários desperdícios que impediam sua evolução. A partir do mapeamento do modelo atual, foi proposto um modelo futuro em condições ideais, que ao ser aplicado confirmou a redução do lead time do processo e demonstrou ser factível, útil e de fácil implementação. Ainda foi possível observar outros fatores impulsionadores no novo PDP da empresa estudada, que foram a mudança de ambiente de trabalho e a melhoria nas relações entre os setores envolvidos, apoiado pela tecnologia de informação, que passou a ter papel fundamental no processo. Outro resultado relevante para a área de pesquisa foi a confirmação da aplicabilidade do MFV no processo de desenvolvimento de produtos alimentícios, dada a escassez de estudos na literatura com essa abordagem.

Apesar disso, a literatura pouco estudou esta abordagem para o desenvolvimento de produtos e na gestão de seu portfólio, áreas em que a Gestão de Projetos desempenha papel importante, e, especificamente, seus impactos no desempenho. Assim, o objetivo geral desta pesquisa é analisar a relação entre a aderência a preceitos e práticas da CCPM e o desempenho do portfólio de produtos em empresas. Para cumprir com estes objetivos, foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa survey, com uma amostra de 79 empresas. Os resultados indicam que empresas praticantes de conceitos e ferramentas sugeridos pela CCPM apresentam melhores resultados, estatisticamente significativos, para os três fatores de desempenho em Gestão de Portfólio de Produtos adotados por esta pesquisa. Este estudo ainda aprofunda o conhecimento em CCPM e portfólio de produtos, ao estudar, por meio de testes não-paramétricos, a influência de algumas variáveis, como o nível de turbulência do ambiente organizacional, nos constructos desta pesquisa. Verificou-se que não houve diferença significativa entre os fatores pesquisados e o nível de turbulência do ambiente. Além disso, as empresas que afirmaram adotar o guia PMBOK® utilizaram mais as práticas de CCPM. / The Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM), an approach based on the Theory of Constraints, has shown effective results in driving both single projects and concurrent multiple projects. Despite this, the literature has little studied this approach to product development and portfolio management, areas in which Project Management plays an important role, and specifically its impact on performance. Thus, the overall objective of this research is to analyze the relationship between adherence to rules and practices of CCPM and portfolio performance of the company's products. In order to meet these objectives, a survey research through a questionnaire was developed, conducted with 79 companies. The results show that companies adopting concepts and tools suggested by CCPM have better results, statistically significant, for the three performance factors in Product Portfolio Management adopted by this research. This research further deepens the CCPM and product portfolio knowledge, studying, by non-parametric tests, the influence of some variables, such as the level of turbulence in the organizational environment, in the research constructs. It was verified that there was no significant difference between the studied factors and the level of environmental turbulence. In addition, companies that have adopted the PMBOK® guide have used CCPM practices more.
