The actual scenario, for the manufacturing enterprises is marked for great changes in customers, competitors and suppliers behavior of an enterprise. Those changes require a continuous effort to keep the competitiveness, making, by this way, that the enterprise look toward to implement new technologies and improvement actions. However, just the implementation of an improvement action cannot guarantee the enterprise competitiveness. It is also necessary to give attention for the main element involved in the implementation absorption of such action - the human, giving him the knowledge to assist in a decision process. This qualification process, happen, mostly in the professional education done by the Universities. However, it can be realized, that the engineering education still working with the traditional education forrns, and do not follow the happening changes, preparing, with this, a professional for an past reality, different from the actual one. This situation shows the possibility to invest in new teaching and learning proposals. This work presents a proposal for the teaching/learning process for the Production Management concepts using, for this, a Reference Model.

Contribution to the production management process using automatic shop floor data collection.Favaretto, Fabio 20 April 2001 (has links)
The production management process is in charge to plan all production activities in manufacturing enterprises. Conceptual models are references for implantation and organization of this process. Some of these models do not include automatic shop floor data collection. It is proposed a conceptual model that takes into account the automatica data collection, using, treating and making it available. This will permit a decision making based on more detailed, accurated and easy to get information.

Inventory models with weather derivatives and weather-conditional rebates for seasonal products. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / ProQuest dissertations and thesesJanuary 2007 (has links)
Key words. Newsvendor Model, Inventory Model, Seasonal Product, Weather Risk, Weather Option, Weather Derivative, Weather-Conditional Rebate, CVaR, Mean-CVaR. / The first model considers the problem of hedging inventory risk for a newsvendor who sells a seasonal product. The newsvendor not only decides the order quantity, but also adopts a weather hedging strategy. A typical hedging strategy is to use an option that is constructed on a weather index before the season begins, which will compensate the buyer of the option if the actual seasonal weather index is above (or below) a given strike level. We explore the joint decision problem in mean-variance, expected utility, conditional value-at-risk (CVaR), and mean-CVaR frameworks. We analyze the impact of weather hedging on optimal order quantity. It is proven that the newsvendor may order more than in the absence of weather options. Numerical analysis on the sensitivity of the optimal order quantity, the risk premium of the option, the portfolio selection and the comparison between the weather option hedging and a particular operational hedging are presented as well. / The second model investigates the advantages of early sales of a seasonal product. To induce early sales, the newsvendor adopts a weather-conditional rebate program, which will pay rebates to the customers who buy the product in the preselling period if a specified weather condition for normal selling season is realized. For an example, a certain amount of refund will be paid to early buyer if the seasonal average temperature falls below the past-three-year seasonal average. Two conditional rebate programs with early booking and early purchasing are investigated and compared. Both of them can price differentiate within a customer among his/her post valuation on the seasonal product, and thus increase the sales. For the early purchasing program, it can further save inventory holding cost and ordering cost. The expected profit can be improved by the programs. Moreover, combined with weather derivatives, the conditional rebate program can manage the financial risk with the expected profit being still improved. / To investigate the means that firms may adopt in managing the adverse impacts of weather on their businesses, this dissertation proposes and analyzes two inventory models for seasonal products when the demand is sensitive to the weather in the season. Both models are formulated under the newsvendor context. / Gao, Fei. / "October 2007." / Adviser: Youhua Frank Chen. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 69-08, Section: B, page: 5002. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2007. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 108-119). / Electronic reproduction.
This research project is based on the search for continuous improvement in the process of planning and control of production in a company of the metalworking industry in Peru, which has been growing rapidly. However, due to the constant market changes, the current demand that manages this sector is flexible. To meet this demand, companies have had to restructure the manufacturing method of their products. However, some companies are still working with the same manufacturing method to meet constant demand. For example, it is the company Metalurgia del Fierro y del Cobre S.R. L. The current problem that the company presents is the increase in backorders, thus causing low turnover during the month. For the solution, the main cause was analyzed is the poor production planning, because the company has not had a previous analysis of the demand during the previous years, this has as causes that the operational part of the company has times not Standardized, constant machine shutdowns and lack of stock of inputs. For the solution of these causes, the following methodologies are proposed: Development of the specified double exponential smoothing method and the creation of a planning and control production system and proposing the incorporation of new specific procedures in the MRP II tool. / Tesis

Sequential games under positional uncertaintyGibson, Christopher Daniel January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on sequential games of imperfect information. I study settings in which not only do agents face imperfect information in the traditional sense of not possessing all payoff-relevant information, but they also face uncertainty about their position of movement in the sequence. I have utilized this framework to study financial investment decisions by individuals, production decisions by firms, and implications on information aggregation in observational learning.
In order to study production decisions by firms I utilize a Stackelberg oligopoly model with a stochastic consumer demand. In this setting firms do not know their position of movement, and as a result of the stochastic demand they cannot infer from the prevailing price if another firm has yet entered the market. I find that as a result of uncertainty firms produce a higher quantity than they otherwise would have, resulting in a more competitive outcome. In fact, as the number of firms in the market increases, with positional uncertainty the equilibrium quantity actually exceeds the perfectly competitive quantity.
I then investigate the impact of positional uncertainty when agents must choose levels of investment in a financial asset. Investors receive a signal about the value of the asset but are not necessarily aware of their position in the sequence of investors. As a result, they are unsure to what extent the signal they receive represents profit-relevant information, or if the signal is “stale” in the sense that the information has been incorporated into the price by other investors. This results in more cautious levels of investment, and an asset price that does not represent the true underlying value.
To study the behavioral aspects of financial investment, I introduce in this model a notion of confidence. While much work in the area of behavioral finance has studied the role of confidence over the accuracy of information, my interest is in confidence over the timing of information. I define an agent as overconfident if they believe they are more likely to have received the signal earlier than other agents, and are thus more likely to be early investors. The effect of overconfidence can overwhelm the cautious nature of positionally uncertain investors, even potentially leading to an overreaction to information. This effect can explain overvaluation of assets and volatility of prices in response to information.
In a model of observational learning, limited information about the history of actions slows the integration of information. However, I show that in the limit, even in the presence of limited histories complete learning occurs. In the environment of limited access to historical information I introduce uncertainty over position of action. This uncertainty even further dampens the process of learning from a welfare standpoint, but as the number of agents grows large complete learning still obtains in the limit for all levels of uncertainty.
The common finding in all these settings is that uncertainty about the order of action causes agents to be cautious about exploiting profitable opportunities. In the case of oligopoly this leads to more competitive outcomes, whereas in the cases of investment and social learning uncertainty leads to less effective information aggregation.
