Acceptance and commitment therapy training and psychological flexibility for helping professionals

Kidney, Gillian January 2018 (has links)
This thesis is an exploration of two interconnected areas: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) training for helping professionals (HPs) and psychological flexibility in helping professionals. The ACT model holds that HPs need to be psychologically flexible (or, herein, flexible) in order to be effective ACT practitioners, and thus a primary goal of ACT training is to enhance participant flexibility. The first chapter is a systematic review of studies that have evaluated the effectiveness of ACT training. It focused on ACT training practices and outcomes related to knowledge, skills, and psychological flexibility in HPs. The results of this review suggested that ACT training can be effective in providing HPs from a range of occupational background with the necessary knowledge and competency to deliver ACT interventions. Furthermore, ACT training can increase HP flexibility. However, confidence in these findings is limited due to methodological weaknesses, particularly variability in ACT training practices, inconsistent use of available measures, a lack of psychometrically robust measures to assess ACT knowledge, and the absence of a flexibility measure designed for use with HP populations. Recommendations were made regarding future research needs in this area, including the development of a HP-specific measure of flexibility. The second chapter reports on the development and initial validation of a measure designed to assess flexibility in the specific context of professional helping, called the Mindful Healthcare Scale (MHS). The results of two studies employing two separates samples of HPs provided good preliminary evidence of the MHS's factor structure and internal validity. The MHS was also found to converge in theoretically-consistent ways with other measures of flexibility and constructs related to the occupational functioning of HPs including burnout syndrome, self-compassion, and empathy. These findings suggest that the MHS may have considerable utility in relation to ACT training for HPs and may also advance our understanding of flexibility's role in HP occupational well-being and functioning.

Constructing A Competence-based Model for Choosing Engineering Professional ¡V A Case of C Company

Wang, Tzu-chieh 25 July 2007 (has links)
Since hi-technology industry production is complex and with specific flow. One step mistake may cause huge loss. The professional engineer employee who deal with process problem are getting more and more important. To win the competition and market share, TFT-LCD manufacturers aggressively invest larger and advance product line, and create big gap between human resource demand and supply. However, TFT-LCD industry just developed a few years ago in Taiwan, experience engineers are not enough to satisfy these fast expand request. To choice suitable employee from volunteers, using Competence Choosing Model is considered and efficiently in particle and in academic analysis. Most researchs discuss Competency model with scales without weight. The study constructed a competence-based model for choosing engineers professional with Analytic Network Process (ANP), and this model include weight for each item. Besides, this model could help C company to select engineering professional efficiency, reduce corporation cost. The findings are as follows: 1.Confirm key competence items for engineering professional, and built up a analysis struce. Therefore, C company may would figure out important key items. 2.Deciding weight for each competency index with Analytic Network Process. The result considered depending relationship between indices correspond with practice, clearly numerical data also help to reduce uncertin in decision process. 3.Inspect with really engineering professional performance records and weight computed results, this model could identify high performance engineering professional correctly. 4.Comparing the results come from Analytic Hierarchy Process and Analytic Network Process, some weight difference between these 2 methods. That means depanding and feedback relationship between indeics may not ignored.

Competencies in animal assisted therapy in counseling: a qualitative investigation of the knowledge, skills and attitudes required of competent animal assisted therapy practitioners

Stewart, Leslie A 16 May 2014 (has links)
Existing authors (Reichert, 1998; Watson 2009) have described the unique positive impact of Animal Assisted Therapy in Counseling (AAT-C) on the client’s perception of the therapeutic alliance as well as the professional counselor’s ability to build positive alliances quickly. When implemented with appropriate education and training, AAT-C can positively impact the therapeutic experience of a diverse range of clients across a wide variety of settings (Chandler, 2012; Fine, 2004). AAT-C requires a specialized set of skills and competencies that allows professional counselors to incorporate specially trained animals into the counseling process to influence the therapeutic process in ways that are beyond the scope of traditional counselor-client helping relationships (Stewart & Chang, 2013). However, there is currently no definition of counseling-specific competencies to guide practitioners in this specialty area. To address this gap, the presenters conducted an investigation using the Grounded Theory Method (Charmaz, 2006; Guba & Lincoln, 1989) to address the following research question: What knowledge, skills, and attitudes are required of competent practitioners of AAT-C? Based on the themes and subthemes that emerged from the data, the authors constructed a theoretical framework which represents competencies in AAT-C. Using this theoretical framework, the authors uncovered a total of nine essential competency areas for professional counselors utilizing AAT-C. They are divided into three domains in accordance with the competency framework that includes Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes (Myers & Sweeny, 1990).

Made available in DSpace on 2015-12-06T23:05:32Z (GMT). / Brazil presents one of most acute aging processes among the world's most populous countries. The proportion of elderly has increased by 6.1% (7,204,517 inhabitants) in 1980 and by 8.6% (14,536,029 inhabitants) in 2000 (IBGE, 1981,2001). Such a fast change in the demographic profile leads the public sector to the need of adopting measures that may face inequities by taking action with a multidimensional focus. In the Public Health area there is a requirement for assistance that accounts for such peculiarity of demand. Thus the present work investigates the health care of the aged and the professional profile of medical doctors and nurses, aiming the planning of professional education. The study focuses the qualification of professionals working in Santos Basic Health Units from the active aging perspective, viewd as a life cycle. Santos presents high demographic index of elderly (15.6%) and a wide municipal assistance network for that population. The professional profile of the medical doctors and nurses of Basic Health units working with elderly was defined on basis on the pertinent literature and the focal group technique was used with Santos health managers and educators. After the data analysis the competencies of the health professional and quality of life constituted the guidelines for the delineation of the professional profile. The study finally indicates a competency framework as a suggested tool for the implementation of the qualification planning for health professionals. / BV UNIFESP: Teses e dissertações

Competencies and consultation delivery : service quality strategy of multinational management consulting firms in Nigeria

Nosiri, Onyekachi Nneka January 2016 (has links)
This research studies the impact of consultancy competency and consultation mode on the service quality of management consulting firms in the emerging market of Nigeria – the largest economy in Africa. It explains the consultant competency and the adopted consultation approach of the ‘Big Four’ (PwC, Akintola-Deloitte, Ernest and Young, and KPMG) management consultancy firms from the resource based-view (RBV) and institutional theory of the firm. The conceptual framework of management consulting directing this study is generated from earlier research (Canavan et al., 2013; Jang et al., 1997, 1998; Patterson, 2000; Parasuraman, 1988; Kisang et al., 2012; Pugh et al., 1968; Oliver, 1980). Previous research has examined factors that are important for management consulting success, however, one of the remaining challenges is to investigate the associations among these factors. Furthermore, there seems to be a relative disregard for the associations between these management consulting factors and service quality. This study aims to advance the RBV and make theoretical contributions in several ways. First, it identifies and proposes that the professional and managerial competencies of the consultants are the key assets of the management consultancy firms needed to sustain and further their competitiveness in emerging markets. Specifically, we argue that these competencies are particularly valuable and have direct impact on management consultancy firms’ service quality. Also, from an institutional perspective, this study proposes that multinational management consulting firms must have the capacity to deliver quality in a consultation mode suitable to their various clients in different countries for sustainability. Specifically, we argue that the particular consultation mode adopted by the consulting firm impacts the quality of consultation service rendered to its clients in the Nigerian market, determining its firms’ client satisfaction levels. This study utilized a mixed methods approach (Creswell, 2003), which entailed the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods in assessing this research’s questions. 13 senior management consultants were interviewed, and survey data was collected from 311 business clients of these management consultancy firms situated in the three most industrious states in Nigeria, which are Abuja (North), Lagos (South-West), and Port Harcourt (South-South). The results of this study show that the service quality of well-established western management consulting firms is significantly influenced by their consultation mode, as well as both their professional and managerial capabilities, irrespective of their client’s organizational structure. This study also finds that client experience levels in dealing with management consultants considerably moderates the relationship between these firms’ service quality and their client satisfaction in this strategic context. Our study advances the RBV and institutional theories, highlighting that the consultation modes, professional competencies, managerial competencies and client experience levels are the key competitive factors of western management consulting firms in Nigeria.

Examining Student Perceptions of Professional Competency Teaching in Veterinary Education

Byrnes, Meghan Kathleen 13 December 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is first to provide an overview of professional competency development and teaching in veterinary education, and then to address the dearth of research in this area by examining students' motivational perceptions of their courses, how these perceptions compare and contrast across courses, and how their perceptions relate to their effort levels and course ratings. Professional competencies encompass cognitive, social, and personal resource skills such as interpersonal communication skills, collaboration, management, promotion of public health, lifelong learning, ethics, diversity competence, and adaptability to changing environments. The inclusion of professional competencies as a requisite portion of the veterinary curriculum has evolved substantially over the past 20 years. In this dissertation, two manuscripts are presented. The first (Chapter 2) is a literature review exploring the past 20 years of professional competency teaching and its development within, and inclusion into, the veterinary curriculum. The first manuscript concludes by describing recommendations from the literature for effective methods of inclusion of professional competencies into the veterinary curriculum. The second manuscript (Chapter 3) details a study conducted in a veterinary college with the aim of determining the extent to which students' motivational perceptions of their courses affect their effort and course ratings in veterinary courses. A second purpose of this study was to identify teaching strategies that can be used to improve the quality of teaching in professional competency courses. Results indicated that perceptions of empowerment, usefulness, and interest have the strongest relationship with effort and course ratings. Based on student responses to open-ended items, suggestions were made that instructors can use to improve student perceptions in their courses as a means to potentially increase student effort levels and overall course ratings. Together, these manuscripts contribute to current motivational theories and offer instructional design ideas to curriculum designers and educators who wish to improve students' motivation and engagement in professional competency development. / Doctor of Philosophy / The overall purpose of this dissertation was to explore student motivation within veterinary education with the goal of identifying ways to improve veterinary courses as well as students' willingness to put effort into their coursework. This study focused primarily on the teaching of professional competencies, which refers to skills in communication, collaboration, management, promotion of public health, lifelong learning, ethics, diversity competence, and adaptability to changing environments. The importance of mastering these skillsets has steadily increased in importance over the past two decades and continues to be an underdeveloped area of many veterinary curricula. There are two manuscripts included in this dissertation. Manuscript 1 (Chapter 2) is a literature review exploring the development of professional competency teaching over the past 20 years and its inclusion into the curriculum at most veterinary colleges. The first manuscript concludes by describing recommendations from the literature for effective methods of inclusion of professional competencies into the veterinary curriculum. Manuscript 2 (Chapter 3) details a study conducted in a veterinary college in which students were surveyed and asked about multiple aspects of their veterinary courses. The purpose of this study was to identify teaching strategies that can be used to improve the quality of teaching in professional competency courses, with the hope of improving students' motivation and effort levels as well. Together, these manuscripts contribute to current motivational theories and offer instructional design ideas to curriculum designers and educators who wish to improve students' motivation and engagement in professional competency development.

As competências dos empreendedores solidários: estudo com catadores em cooperativas de coleta e tratamento de resíduos sólidos em São Bernardo do Campo / The competencies of solidarity entrepreneurs: study with garbage collector in collection and processing solid waste cooperative, in São Bernardo do Campo

Gattai, Silvia 24 April 2014 (has links)
The research problem that gave rise to this thesis was the question about which competencies should be the profile of entrepreneurs dedicated to the management of popular solidarity enterprises. The study was conducted with participants from the collection and treatment of solid waste cooperatives , seeking to identify, describe and analyze the capacities that better contribute to that these people are able to devote himself to the work processes of these cooperatives , but also exercise administrative and managerial functions that are essential to the survival of the enterprise . These cooperatives have integrated the Project Implementation of the Entrepreneurial Incubator Solidarity of São Bernardo do Campo , which allowed us to analyze if and how this incubation process contributed to the development of the competencies profile of these entrepreneurs. The research object of this investigation were the participants collectors such collection and processing of recyclable solid waste cooperative that is accompanied by the project, in the Greater ABC Paulista region. An exploratory and descriptive research, using the qualitative method of case study to document analysis, interviews and ethnographic technique of participant observation was conducted. The problems of poverty, social inequality and public, private and third sector initiatives aimed at creating job opportunities and income for the poorest people in Brazil, is the background of this research. The results indicate that the solidarity organizations require individual competences for their support and that these capacities can be developed in incubation processes like this that is presented in this study. The solidarity enterprises are organizations that do not have as a strategic motive the profit, but the regular remuneration of those who work in them as associates and strengthening of intragroup relationships with the development of trust and cooperation. Accordingly, to study them is necessary to consider a dimension of entrepreneurship and other associations of which they sustained on the skills of the people working there.
