An investigation of a peer help programme in a local South Africa secondary school : a whole-school evaluation.O'Shea, Kelly. January 2003 (has links)
The present study involved an investigation and evaluation of a peer counselling programme at a local all-girls secondary school. It is argued that, to be effective, a school-based evaluation should consider the programme through an investigation of its impact on the whole school. As such the main focus in the study is to evaluate this programme from the
viewpoint o fthe programme co-ordinator (the school counsellor), the learners, the teacher body and the peer counsellors themselves. The present study was based on predominantly qualitative data collected through the use of interview, questionnaire and focus-group data-collection methods. The results of the study suggest that the peer counselling programme is perceived positively by the majority of learners (both users and non-users) and the teachers. The programme appears to be impacting the school environment by providing additional support to the learners at the school. In addition, the peer counsellors acknowledged the positive impact of their role on their sense of self-worth. A number of recommendations are made in keeping with the aims of an evaluation. An
initial recommendation is that the terms "peer counsellor" and "peer counselling" be replaced by "peer helper" and "peer helping", emphasising the more supportive (and less therapeutic) role that the peer counsellors perform. In addition, whilst both the school counsellor and the teachers expressed generally positive comments about the programme, it is suggested that the teachers would benefit from more information with regards to the peer counselling programme. In keeping with a whole-school evaluation, it was felt that the programme would benefit from being more clearly part of the broader school context. Raising both learner and teacher awareness of the programme was a central recommendation. On a
broader level, it was recommended that the programme be incorporated into school policy to ensure its official recognition and endorsement in the school context. Peer-helping programmes represent an innovative way in which South African secondary schools can meet the psycho-social and educational needs of their learners. Further research into such programmes may serve to contribute to a body of research that may inform and guide the effective developments of such present and future programmes. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg , 2003.

Substance dependency and abuse within the workplace : a case study exploring supervisors' experiences and perceptions of employee substance dependence and abuse.Ally, Sherika. January 2009 (has links)
This study explores supervisor’s experiences and perceptions of substance dependency and abuse within an organisation, the strategies used by these supervisors in dealing with substance-related incidents and their perceived effectiveness of the employee assistance programs utilised. Qualitative methodology was employed and semi- structured interviews were conducted. A non-probability sampling technique was used and a convenience sample comprising of 9 participants was selected from a single organisation in central Durban. The data obtained was then qualitatively analysed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that substance abuse and dependency were present within the organisation but not a prevalent problem. Supervisors were well versed in company policies and responsive to employee substance related issues. Furthermore, supervisors perceived the organisations employee assistance program utilised as highly effective. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2009.

The development of evaluation strategies for intervention projects for girl street children : a participatory action approach.Reddy, Preshantha. January 2005 (has links)
This study which was conducted in a shelter for girl street children in KwaZuluNatal explored the programmes available to the girl street child and the current evaluation strategies for such programmes. The aim of the research was to provide insight into what criteria or indices children and service providers think should be used to evaluate the effectiveness of programmes for street children. Qualitative research methodology using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach guided the research and allowed for in-depth discussions with the children living in the shelters as well as the staff involved. The children were between 12-18 years of age. Data were obtained through separate multiple focus group sessions with children and staff at the shelter. Seven focus group sessions were held with the children and three focus group sessions were held with the staff at the shelter. The sessions were tape-recorded and then transcribed. The major findings of the study indicated that the children overall were enjoying their stay in the shelter. However, inconsistencies were identified between the experiences of the children and the work conducted by the staff members. Further, the findings of this study showed that programmes at the shelter being studied were evaluated, but the effectiveness of these evaluation strategies has been questioned. Emanating from the findings, recommendations have been made with regards to practice issues and programme evaluation. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2005.

An evaluation of the "Managing stress effectively" personnel capacity building programme of the South African Police Service / by Heiletje Marili WilliamsWilliams, Heiletje Marili January 2003 (has links)
Background: As a result of the restructuring of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in 1996
and various other factors, Police Social Work Services decided to broaden the scope of its services
by developing and introducing proactive, personnel capacity building programmes. By 1999,15 such
programmes were developed. The need subsequently arose for a comprehensive impact assessment
of these programmes and the Evaluation of Personnel Capacity Building Programmes (EKBP)
study was launched in 2001. The evaluation of the Managing Stress Effectively programme formed
part of this research.
Objectives: The primary aim of the study was to determine the effect of the Managing Stress
Effectively Programme on SAPS personnel's knowledge, attitude and behaviour.
Method: In the research, the comparison group pretest and posttest design and triangulation were
used. Six measurement scales and a presenter's evaluation questionnaire were developed and
completed by 327 experimental group respondents, 57 comparison group members and 32
presenters.
Results: Through the triangulation of measurements it was determined that the Managing Stress
Effectively programme had a practical significant effect on the respondent's knowledge, attitude and
behaviour. It was thus an effective tool in the hands of Police Social Work Service that not only
empowered SAPS personnel to lead more productive professional lives, but one that also enhanced
their personal well-being. / Thesis (M.A. (MW))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.

'n Evaluasie van die tydsbestuur, doelwitbeplanning en probleemoplossing kapasiteitsbouprogramme van die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens / deur Petronella HuisamenHuisamen, Petronella January 2003 (has links)
Background Due to the restructuring of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in 1996, as well as
other factors, Police Social Work Services decided to broaden the scope of its services to also include
pro-active, capacity building interventions. The result was the development of 15 personnel capacity
building programmes by 1999. The need arose for a comprehensive impact assessment of these
programmes and the Evaluation of Personnel Capacity Building Programmes (EPCBP) study was
subsequently launched in 2001. The evaluation of the Problem Solving, Planning of Goals and Time
Management Programmes formed part of this research.
Objectives: The primary aim of the study was to determine the effect of the Problem solving , Planning
of Goals and Time Management Programmes on SAPS personnel's knowledge, attitude and behaviour.
Method: In the research, the comparison group pre-test and post-test design and triangulation were used.
Fourteen measurement scales and a presenter's evaluation questionnaire were developed and utilized. It
involved 666 experimental group respondents, 132 comparison group members and 46 presenters.
Results: All three of the programmes had a significant effect on the respondents' knowledge, attitude
and behaviour and changed their personal and professional life in a very positive manner. The research
proved without doubt that the programmes are effective capacity-building tools in the hands of Police
Social Work Services. However there are still certain steps to be taken to further improve the
programmes. / Thesis (M.A. (MW))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.

'n Evaluasie van die substansafhanklikheids-program van die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens / deur Marina du PlooyDu Plooy, Marina January 2004 (has links)
Background:
As result of the restructuring of the South African Police Services during 1994 as well as other
factors, Police Social Work Services decided to shift the focus from reactive services to more
proactive, personnel capacity building programmes. At the end of 1999 , 15 of these programmes
were already developed. Although basic evaluation instruments were included in some of the
programme packages, the need arose to determine either the effect of the programmes on the
participants or the cost-efficiency of the interventions scientifically. This led to the launch of the
PCBP project and the Evaluation of the Substance Dependency study in November 2001. This
form part of the evaluation of the comprehensive personnel capacity building research project.
Objectives:
The primary aim of the study was to determine the effect of the Substance Dependency
Programme on SAPS personnel's knowledge, attitude and behaviour.
Method:
In the research, the comparison group pre-test and post-test design and triangulation were used. Six
measurement scales and a presenter's evaluation questionnaire were developed and completed by
217 experimental group respondents, 47 comparison group respondents and 10 presenters.
Results:
Through the triangulation of measurement it was determined that the Substance Dependence
Programme had a practical significant effect on the respondent's knowledge, attitude and behaviour.
It is thus an effective tool in the hand of Police Social Work Services, that empower police
members and lead to productivity and enhanced their personal well-being. / Thesis (M.A. (MW))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Die waarde-oriëntering van leerders in sekondêre skole / Andrew Dariús AbdoolAbdool, Andrew Dariús January 2005 (has links)
This study focuses on the identification of didactic guidelines for presenting values
education in secondary schools. The studied literature sends a clear message that
values education is of cardinal importance in education, teaching and training. In 2000
the National Department of Education of South Africa assembled a task team to identify
a set of values in particular relevant to education and training. In the report Manifesto
on Values Education and Democracy (DOE, 2001) six core values are singled out as of
primary importance to the new dispensation in South Africa: equality, equal rights,
tolerance, multilingualism, transparency, accountability, and social responsibility. The
Report focuses only on national, political and social values, however. From research
performed by Rens (2005), Hattingh (1999) en Bagarette (1995), it is clear that an
individual needs to be educated as a holistic being and all life values thus need to be
addressed integratively .
A literature study was undertaken to clarify the concepts values, value orientation and
values education, and also to determine how adolescents experience values education.
Consequently, different values education programmes currently implemented in foreign
countries were analysed . It was found that the 'Cornerstone-waardes" programme of
John Heenan, applied in New Zealand, could reasonably easily be adapted for the
South African context. From the discussion of the curriculating process as applicable to
values education, didactic guidelines could be formulated for values education in South
African schools.
To identify the current orientation to values as manifested by learners, teachers and
school principals in South Africa, the values questionnaire compiled by Vreken and
Rens (2001) for research on the values orientation of university learners, was adapted
and completed by the population involved in this study. Principals were subjected to
partly-structured interviews to gain their opinions on values education in schools.
Interviews on possible guidelines for values education in South Africa were also
conducted by e-mail with international experts.
Since the primary aim of the study was to determine the values orientation of secondary
school learners and to recommend didactic guidelines for values education, the aim was
mainly attained by means of the empirical study. Noteworthy is, however, that there is
no symmetry between learners' views on important values and those that the
Department of Education finds it necessary to be promoted. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Education))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Research on equitable criteria for funding and effective financial management for the provincial English language teaching (PELT) resource centres in Mozambique.Welo, Barnabe Paulo. January 2000 (has links)
The purposes of this abstract is to mirror the origin of the research, its contents, the key
research findings, what and how the research was conducted.
The research on Equitable Criteria for Funding and Financial Management for the PELT
Resource Centres in Mozambique was born out of the desire to establish an even, fair
distribution of wealth in a manner that is principled and ethically acceptable in a society
of ever-growing demands and unforeseeable irregular supplies of already scarce
resources. In the report, 'equitable' is used to mean the balancing in accord with local
and/ or relative needs. The goal of the research is to establish equitable criteria for
funding or resourcing, user-friendly but user-responsible ways/mechanisms of financial
planning, controlling and reporting and sources of funding or resourcing. The contents
have been organised into five chapters. They consist of methods, a brief description of
the research title, statement of purpose, critical questions and core hypotheses. Other
contents include a literature review, conceptual and theoretical framework, data
treatment, general discussion of the research findings and references. The research
findings fall under two main categories: the decision making and resource allocation
process, and financial management. The research findings show that the decision making
and resource allocation process hosts problems such as resource allocation imbalances,
exclusion of resource managers in key decision making and resource allocation processes,
lack of equitable criteria for funding, managers' attitudes which blockade resource
allocation, refusing resources to certain areas because of assumptions that they do not
have the ability and resources to manage resources, etc. With regard to financial
management, there are some small scale irregularities in principle which are very
significant. These include delays in financial transactions, lack of sound financial
accounting knowledge and skills and efficient communication. These problems are
genuine and legitimate, and they should be resolved. Thus, some solutions have been
suggested herein. The following are the main areas of solution interventions: devolution
of powers and authorities to local level management, involvement of lower management
in the policy, decision making and resource allocation process, negotiated decentralised
financial management, and use of identified criteria for funding and criteria for
procurement. Other areas encompass effective communication, financial accounting
training and negotiating funding with provincial and national education authorities.
The research involved twenty lower and senior managers from the in-service training of
teachers of English in ten provinces in Mozambique. They all responded to the
questionnaires, some participated in the interview schedule and others in the focus group.
The last two methods were designed to reinforce the questionnaire data collection,
validity and reliability of the research. / Thesis (M.Ed.)-University of Natal, 2000.

RESOLUTION DU PROBLEME DE LA MOBILISATION DE LA RESERVE TERTIAIRE AVEC PRISE EN COMPTE DU RESEAU DE TRANSPORT A ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE : CONCEPTION ET REALISATION D'UN OUTIL D'AIDE A L'OPERATEURBouche, Jean-Marc 18 November 1997 (has links) (PDF)
