Identifying Supportive Education Practices for College Students with Psychological DisabilitiesSears, Lekeia Shari 01 January 2016 (has links)
Students with psychological disabilities who enter the post-secondary environment can struggle without proper support services. Faculty and staff members typically interact with their students as much as or more than any other post-secondary personnel. This project study explored faculty and staff members' knowledge of supportive education programs and their feelings about engaging/helping these students. Guided by Bandura's self-efficacy theory for faculty and Rogers' humanistic approach to education, which supports the need for faculty involvement and training, this study explored whether faculty and staff members feel effective in addressing these issues with students. A qualitative case study design was employed to explore faculty and staff perceptions about their preparation in supporting the educational goals of students with severe psychological problems. The data collected in this study came from 12 face-to-face interviews with faculty and staff members purposively sampled from a university located in the southeastern region of Pennsylvania. Data from the interviews were inductively analyzed and coded to identify common themes. The results from this project study indicated that many faculty members did not have any knowledge about supported education practices and the psychological problems that affect students. The findings informed the creation of a faculty/staff professional development that addresses effective ways to respond to the needs of students with psychological problems. Such training should promote a social change in their attitudes about students' psychological problems, facilitate the structure of their learning environment for students with these problems, and inspire support among one another.

Patienters upplevelser av att leva med kärlkramp : En allmän litteraturstudie / Patient’s experiences of living with angina : A general literature studySöderbom, Linnea, Sjunnesson, Linnéa January 2022 (has links)
Background: Angina is a coronary artery disease that affects many people and causes reduced quality of life and healthfor the patient. In order to reduce the patients’ burden of the disease in daily life, it’s required that the nurse is familiarwith the disease and how it’s experienced by the patients. Aim: The purpose was to elucidate patients’ experiences ofliving with angina. Method: This study was conducted as a general literature study with an inductive approach andincluded eight different scientific articles. Result: Patients with angina shared a common experience of leading a limitedlife, both from a psychological-, physical- and social perspective, divided into four different main categories: experiencesof physical problems, experiences of a limited lifestyle, experiences of psychological problems and need for strategies to manage their illness. Conclusion: Patients’ experiences of living with angina indicated that the disease had an extensive impact on their lives. The disease had a negative impact on both perceived well-being and physical function, which affected the patients’ social belonging and ability to perform activities. Many patients experienced a changed attitudetowards life and one's self-image. An increased knowledge of patients’ experiences of angina could contribute to more person-centered care.

Psychological and physiological problems associated with the use of antepartum bed rest for prevention of high-risk pregnanciesJensen, Krista Marie 01 January 2010 (has links)
Antepartum bed rest is a prescribed therapy for women with high risk pregnancies to reduce the occurrence of preterm labor, preeclampsia, risks associated with incompetent cervix and other complications. Activity restriction, or bed rest, in high risk pregnancies is based on assumptions that it is both effective for preventing adverse pregnancy outcomes and it is safe; however, the efficacy of prescribed antepartum bed rest has been questioned. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive review of research findings about the efficacy of antepartum bed rest and the potential side effects that may result. For this literature review an interdisciplinary review of research was performed using Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health, PubMed, and PsychINFO. Current literature shows that activity restriction during pregnancy can have negative effects on the mother including increased levels of anxiety and depression, muscle atrophy, increased risk of thromboembolic events, cardiovascular side effects, and an increase in postpartum recovery time. Considering these common themes, nursing interventions to reduce the instance of these events were studied including music therapy, support groups, family involvement, and fall prevention.

Given the enigma represented by the students included, especially those with severe psychological problems, or with Global Development Disorders, the knowledge of the teachers seems to be insufficient. In the absence of pedagogical border, clinical discourse is called to do margin in the processes of teaching and learning, often not legitimating the school as potent and powerful space, and indication of re-educational practices. What reasons lead school not to recognize his role constitutive? The education, dealing with the "out of the ideal of normality", lost the individual as an enigmatic plot? It is a theoretical study, in which these issues are raised from the professional experience of the researcher, the primary sources of special education (Reports of Jean Itard- 1901- and A treatise on insanity and others disorders affecting the mind -1800- Philippe Pinel), the field of biological medical and fundamental psychopathology and from the tale called “A terceira margem do rio” (The third margin of the river) written by Guimarães Rosa. The lineament that unites and separates, arises from the investment, the diagnosis as margin, from Itard believing in Victor transformation through education. Lineament originator of an area and an individual, don't keep a sense a priori. In order to emphasis the constitutive function of the school and the teacher, the stroke need to slide off the ideal of normalcy to question the conditions of possibility of an education, doubting, suspending, petrified and depleting the human truths.

Parent-child relationships and parental distress as moderators between chronic illness and psychological problems in emerging adults.Kukay, Abigail 09 December 2022 (has links)
The current study aimed to better understand how parental functioning and parent-child relationships might moderate the effects of chronic illness on psychological problems in emerging adulthood. Three hypotheses were made: (1) the presence and severity of chronic illness would associate positively with emerging adult psychological problems, (2) parental distress would moderate the effects between chronic illness presence/severity and emerging adulthood psychological problems, and (3) parent-child relationship quality would moderate the effects between chronic illness presence/severity and emerging adult psychological problems. Data analysis consisted of testing interaction effects, pairwise parameter comparisons, and multiple group analysis. The three-way interaction between endorsing a health condition, physical quality of life, and maternal psychological distress significantly predicted psychological problems in both emerging adult men and women. Additionally, the three-way interaction between endorsing a health condition, physical quality of life, and maternal parent-child relationship quality significantly predicted psychological problems in both emerging adult men and women.

The changes in psychological functioning problems during Solution-Focused Brief Therapy among adolescents in health care settings / Sveikatos priežiūros įstaigose gydomų paauglių psichologinio funkcionavimo problemų kitimas į sprendimus sutelkto trumpalaikio konsultavimo metuPakrosnis, Rytis 04 June 2008 (has links)
Adolescents with health disorders experience an increased risk of psychological functioning problems. However, the lack of availability of psychological help and research on methods’ effectiveness in this group is still being extensively discussed worldwide. Theoretical assumptions of the Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), closely related to the ideas of constructivism and systems theory, indicate that therapeutic effect of the model can be viewed as not limited to changes in the problem presented for the therapy, but as having potential of spreading into other areas of psychological functioning. Thus the aim of the dissertation is to estimate the changes in the severity of psychological functioning problems during SFBT among in-patient and out-patient adolescents experiencing mental or physical health disorders.
Participants were 12-18 year old out-patients of two primary mental health care centers and in-patients of a rehabilitation hospital (N=131). Treatment group consisted of 23 out-patients and 21 in-patients (control groups accordingly 23 and 28 adolescents). Changes in the severity of problems presented for the therapy were assessed by The Therapist’s Evaluation of Improvement and The Client’s Evaluation of Progress, while the severity of psychological functioning problems and its changes were assessed by Standardized Interview for the Evaluation of Adolescents’ Problems and Checklist of Adolescent Behavior Changes.
Results of the study revealed that mental... [to full text] / Sveikatos sutrikimų turintys paaugliai susiduria su padidėjusia psichologinio funkcionavimo problemų rizika.

Edukační cíle pro práci s uprchlíky v azylových zařízeních Ministerstva vnitra / Educational aims of the work with refugees in the detention centres of the Ministry of the InteriorZAJÍČKOVÁ, Agáta January 2007 (has links)
This thesis deals with the refugees in detention centres in the Czech Republic. Its aim is to describe and suggest educational and training aims for them. Theoretical part outlines the situation of migration in the Czech Republic, detention centres for refugees and their typical psychological problems. It accounts the educational aims from the point of view of common theory of education and leisure time education. The practical part describes the life of refugees in the detention centre in Kostelec nad Orlicí, their activities in leisure time and relations between the employees and clients of the centre. The refugees are seen as social workers´ and educators´ clients. The interviews with the employees of the detention centre are qualitatively analysed, attention is paid both to their activities and to their private aims at work and so the educational aims for the pedagogical workers dealing with refugees are formulated.

A Descriptive Study of a Native African Mental Health Problem Known in Zimbabwe as zvirwere zvechivanhuMungadze, Jerry Jesphat 08 1900 (has links)
This is a study conducted in Zimbabwe which compared a group of 50 zvirvere zvechivanhu patients and a group of 50 non-patients in age, sex, marital status, level of education and claims of spirit possession. Claims of spirit possessions and types of spirits, as pointed out by Bennel (1982), were used as symptoms of zvirwere zvechivanhu. The two groups were also compared in symptom dimensions of the SCL-90-R used in the study. The SCL-90-R, developed by Derogatis (1975), is a 90-item symptom check list used to screen people for psychological problems reflected in the nine symptom dimensions of somatization, obsessive/ compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, psychoticism and in the three global scores of Global Severity Index, Positive Symptom Distress Index and Positive Symptom Total. The subjects were chosen from two different sites, using a systematic sampling method. Three statistical methods were used to analyze the data. The Chi-square was used to analyze data on descriptive variables. The T-test and 2 x 2 analysis of variance were used to analyze the data on symptom dimensions and global scores. The study had one main hypothesis and nine subhypotheses. The main hypothesis was that zvirwere zvechivanhu patients were significantly different from the non-patients on the overall global scores. The nine subhypotheses stated that the patient and non-patient groups were significantly different in the nine separate symptom dimensions. The study concluded that the zvirwere zvechivanhu patients were significantly different from the non-patients in the overall global scores. In the nine separate symptom dimensions, it was concluded that the two groups were the same in all except the somatization and obsessive/compulsive system dimensions.
