An Opportunity for Sport or an Opportunity for Development: Is Special Olympics Perceived as Contributing to Psychosocial Development and Social Inclusion?

Inoue, Chiaki 28 September 2011 (has links)
Sport is a cultural phenomenon that has spread throughout the world (Harvey & Houle, 1994). For youth, sport is perceived as a context that can play a major role in person’s psychosocial development across their life-span (Danish, Petitpas, & Hale, 2007). However, despite the increase in research in this field, very little work has examined how sport may play a role in the psychosocial development of youth with intellectual disabilities (ID). Moreover, an area of study that has also grown related to the lived experiences of individuals living with a disability including ID is social inclusion (SI). Similar to research related to psychosocial development, very little research has been conducted to examine whether the context of sport can foster social inclusion for youth with ID. Special Olympics Canada (SOC) is an organization “dedicated to enriching the lives of Canadians with an intellectual disability through sport” (SOC, 2010, “SOC Mission Statement”, para.1) and may be an organization that has the potential to positively impact the lives of its youth participants. Thus, the purpose of this research was to examine whether stakeholders perceived SO as impacting the psychosocial development and social inclusion. The results indicated that SO, by all stakeholders, is perceived as an organization that is facilitating the psychosocial development of its athletes through the incorporation of strong social support networks and the development of life skills. In addition, SO was perceived as facilitating social inclusion for youth, particularly in the context of school and their surrounding community.

Sörling, Sara, Ström, Sara January 2014 (has links)
Youths in Residential Institutions (HVB-home) often have a problematic behavior and are in need of protection, security and boundaries. HVB-homes are through legislation required to provide care and treatment to counteract adverse development among the youth. The Inspection for Health and Care (IVO) supervise the HVB-homes. The purpose of this study was to interview staff at HVB-homes and Inspectors at IVO to investigate their perceptions of how care and treatment should be conducted. Furthermore the aim was to distinguish whether the legislation can be interpreted differently and what consequences this has for the care and the treatment for the youths regarding their needs for positive psychosocial development. To obtain data five qualitative interviews were conducted with professionals at HVB-homes and one with two inspectors at IVO. The result was analyzed according to the theoretical concepts of psychosocial development, motivation and boundaries. The result shows that to develop psychosocial maturity, young people need individual care, empowerment, boundaries and skills to control and protect themselves. Furthermore, it shows occurrences of both obstacles and opportunities in terms of the staff being able to provide the appropriate care for the youth. The staff experience frustration in the execution of the supervision and describe that they interpret the legislation differently from IVO. The staff express that they are unable to handle the youths at HVB-home. A problematizing discussion is conducted regarding the youths’ problems at HVB-homes, need of boundaries and the staffs’ ability to provide appropriate care in relation to the execution of the supervision and the two partly different interpretations of the legislation.

Desempenho acadêmico, permanência e desenvolvimento psicossocial de universitários : relação com indicadores da assistência estudantil / Academic achievement, dropouts and psychosocial development at university : relations with student assistance indicators

Andrade, Ana Maria Jung de January 2014 (has links)
Different studies indicate that dropout decision, academic grades and psychosocial development among university students are affected by contextual, personal, relational and academic factors. The Programa Nacional de Assistência Estudantil (PNAES) is a governmental politic that aims to reduce dropouts and low grades in federal public universities, specifying 10 areas to work on and achieve the results proposed. In the context of a recently created multicampi university, this study aims to identify the relation of dropout intention, academic grades, and perception of psychosocial development with PNAES areas, perceived social support and career development aspects. Results indicated higher associations of social support and career identity with the main variables in this study. Low or inexistent relations were observed between the main variables and PNAES areas. Results also pointed out the importance of psychosocial development on the variables analised. Implications of these results for politics improvement and possible actions for academic support are discussed.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is considered a serious and complex problem of public health, by triggering the short and long term consequences negative for women's health and their children, who are exposed to violent episodes, even when they are not the direct target of the violence. Negative life events, arising from the family, including IPV and maternal effects, have been considered risk factors for the emergence of problems in the various dimensions of the development of the child. At every stage of development, from newborn to adolescence, IPV can cause different impacts, including behavioral problems, emotional, cognitive, physical and social. These problems may persist throughout adult life, including the possibility of the victim become aggressor, which is one of the assumptions of intergenerational transmission of violence. The objective of this study was to investigate the consequences of the child's exposure to IPV to the psychosocial development. This study is the third step of a prospective cohort which has been conducted since 2005, with women enrolled in all family health units Health District II of the city of Recife, Pernambuco. Were evaluated 614 pairs of mothers-children. The mothers had already been assessed in pregnancy and postpartum. The psychosocial problems of children were evaluated using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) e o Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (SMFQ). Among the women studied, 319 (52.0%; 95% CI: 48.0%-55.9%) reported some kind of violence (physical, psychological or sexual) in some period (during pregnancy, postpartum or over the last 7 years). Violence during pregnancy was 28.0% (95% CI: 24.4%-31.5%); in the postpartum, 22.0% (95% CI: 18.8%-25.4%); and in the past 7 years, 32.6% (95% CI: 28.9%- 36.4%). To 55% (95% CI: 44%-65%) of women with reports of violence in pregnancy and postpartum, there was continuity in the last 7 years. Were evaluated 10 types of exposure of the child to the IPV and the mothers reported that 60.6% of the children were exposed to some form. The incidence of behavioral problems was 46.7% and of the depression was 15.3%. Even after controlling the effects of possible confounding variables (family, violence, and individual child’s context), the behavior problems and depression in schoolchildren, remained associated with IPV exposure suffered by the mother. The results also showed that the chance of the child having behavior problems and depression was higher when experienced multiple types of exposure to IPV. The age of onset of exposure of greater commitment to behavioral problems, in school age, was the age range of 1 to 2 years and for depression was exposure in prenatal phase and 0 to 11 months. The influence of the environment of relations shows how the emotional well-being of children is directly associated with the emotional functioning of their caregivers and their families. Therefore, it is necessary, early identification and intervention, to stop the cycle of violence and prevent future generations of children exposed to IPV.

An Opportunity for Sport or an Opportunity for Development: Is Special Olympics Perceived as Contributing to Psychosocial Development and Social Inclusion?

Inoue, Chiaki January 2011 (has links)

THE PROBLEMATIC OF INTER-RELATIONSHIP BOUNDARIES IN THE CHRISTIAN ENVIRONMENT Summary In the Christian environment, the same sociological-psychological principles are valid as anywhere else. The aim of the work is to clarify the knowledge of the topic of borders on general level and to view the life of Jesus Christ, the ideal of humanity, from the perspective of borders. I will also attempt to show the way in which the incorrect and selective understanding of the gospel principles may lead to psychologically insane attitudes. Gestalt guidelines assisting parents to enhance psychosocial development in children

Brink, Magaretha Elizabeth 30 June 2006 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the development of Gestalt guidelines to assist parents to enhance psychosocial development in middle childhood. The researcher made use of the four stages of the intervention research process, namely project planning, information gathering, design, and early development of the guidelines to complete this research study. For the purposes of this study middle childhood is defined as male and female children between the age of seven and twelve years. Some areas of psychosocial development and relevant Gestalt principles are highlighted in this study. Functional elements of existing parenting programs are discussed and utilised along with the views of the respondents in this study, those of experts, and literature reviews to design Gestalt guidelines with an observational system. / Social Work / M.Diac.
