Public Service Broadcasting in the digital media age : How streaming services reshape the role of Greek public network ERT from state to public service broadcaster? / Radio och TV i allmänhetens tjänst i den digitala medieåldern : Hur omformar streamingtjänster det grekiska offentliga nätverket ERT:s roll från statligt till offentligt programföretag?

Katsoulakis, Emmanouil Evangelos January 2022 (has links)
Media are created to disseminate information and foster dialogue to support democratic societies. As society evolved and liberalism and marketization gained ground, Public Service Broadcasting was established to produce and distribute content that benefits society without aiming for profit. The notion has faced several challenges with technology development, leading to a transition to Public Service Media being the current one, where media content is consumed through different online platforms. Public Service Broadcasters transition on different phases to Public Service Media based on the country they operate in and the sociopolitical conditions. This research explores the history and origins of PSB and the challenges they face, focusing on the Greek media landscape and the Greek PSB ERT, which since 2020 has been following an online media-focused strategy. By conducting a survey of Greek audience members, quantitative data are generated on the public perception of ERT, the media habits of the Greek audience, and their view on the new strategy of ERT and its streaming platform ERTFLIX. Results indicate that Greek PSB is a state broadcaster due to its lack of editorial autonomy, while the low viewership and survey responses show a lack of trust of the Greek audience in ERT. Participants are in favor of the new ERT strategy, and the majority have used ERTFLIX even once. On the other hand, the news programming of ERT is still not trusted by the audience, indicating that further actions need to be taken to change the state broadcaster identity of ERT.

Designing for Trustworthiness in Public Service Media : What kind of design guidelines can be set to improve credibility for news working with public service?

Skönvall, Julia January 2020 (has links)
The digital technology is growing, which challenges the traditional media of printed newspapers. As more people consume news online, technology has transitioned to the digital platform. One of the challenges with moving to a digital platform is that it is hard for the reader to interpret the credibility of news.In this “Research Through Design” project, the aim is to understand how to design for better credibility in public service news for young adults. The external client of this thesis is SVT Interaktiv and achieving high credibility for public service is important since the news agencies have a responsibility of maintaining high credibility in the public interest. Sustaining a positive user experience in these services is essential for maintaining the customer's trust.A data collection of remote co-design workshops and questionnaire was made with eight participants. This data was later clustered into six themes and articulated into design guidelines that could be used to improve credibility for news services. These seven design guidelines act as recommendations for developers and designers working within the news industry to increase credibility in their services and products. Keywords:

Media work and public value : producing public service television under state control in Colombia

Castaño Echeverri, Alejandra January 2017 (has links)
This project, based on a study of television producers in Colombia, is an ethnographic exploration of the working conditions of cultural production within a highly contextualized environment such as public service television under state control, using Señal Colombia TV channel as case study. I examine how cultural production is affected by governmental structures and dynamics, whilst exploring the conditions and processes of public service television production, and how television producers experience these processes at an individual level. My primary question is to determine how the production of public service television under state control impacts producers’ practices and perceptions regarding the value and outcomes of their work. In this context, precariousness, autonomy, good work, power and public value have emerged as central areas of constant tension. I link issues regarding cultural work and public value in a media production analysis, obtaining direct empirical data that provides an in-depth description of the current public media production context under state control in Colombia. To explore these intersections, the project brings together interviews, focus groups, and participant observation. The findings exposed that the internal dynamics of both the nation and the organisation significantly affect the concept of public value, making it an ambivalent, uncertain and ill-defined notion. Where governance is state-driven, workers, regardless of their role, subscribe to dominant narratives and discourses that justify their work, and thus contribute to keeping themselves under prescribed creativity. In general, the present study provides a holistic account of cultural work study, focusing on what occurs to cultural work in various contexts of control, and the individual reactions to these contexts. The analysis of cultural work in this context, also broadens current knowledge on the concepts of network sociality and good work under clientelism, and in a non-free-market.

This study focuses on the internet as a public space and explores the emotionality of this area. Public Service framtid i de ungas händer : En kvalitativ studie om gymnasieelevers användande av och åsikter om svensk public service. / The future of Public Service - in the hands of the youth : A qualitative study on high school students' use of and opinions about Swedish public service.

Åberg, Elsa, Andreasson, Alice January 2023 (has links)
Public service media has a big role in the traditional media in Sweden. Historically, they constructed a shared cultural reference and applied news and facts to people to make it possible for them to be educated citizens. However, public service and other traditional media have a difficulty reaching young people today. At the same time young people are the group that consumes the most amount of media. Therefore, it is relevant to study what they consume and what they discard - and why. Especially why they don’t consume the content provided by Swedish public service media. Because if they don’t consume it now, will they in the future?       This qualitative study aims to examine how young people in Sweden use public service media and whether they value it as a public service. To do this, we conducted four focus groups with a total of twelve 18-year-olds. The result shows that even though few of them choose to consume content from the public service media, most of them have a positive association of it and value it as a public service. Many said that they trust that they follow their assignment to serve the public and that they produce objective and accurate news. However, the knowledge about the way public service media is organized and financed was shallow at best. It appears that the main reason they don’t consume the content is that they don’t come across it where they consume media. The interviewees that did consume public service media content did so on a different platform such as Spotify or YouTube. So the difficulty in reaching the young audience might not be because of the content, but that they don’t even know of its existence.

Česká televize a Český rozhlas optikou modelu PSM: případová studie / Czech television and czech radio in the perspective of the PSM model: a case study

Obrovský, Petr January 2013 (has links)
The master thesis describes the development of Czech Television and Czech Radio be- tween 2005 and 2012, focusing on media policy, technology, content and attitude to the audience. It applies research output of the RIPE initiative as a theoretical basis for col- lection and interpretation of the data. RIPE, which links academia with media profes- sionals worldwide, aiming to redefine the public service remit for the 21st century, sug- gests that the political, economic, technological and social context has fundamentally changed in the last two or three decades. As a result, the original concept of public ser- vice broadcasting, established in Western Europe after the Second World War, has lost its legitimacy. It is therefore necessary for public service broadcasters (PSB) to trans- form into public service media (PSM). This means diversifying modes of distribution to new technologies besides traditional broadcasting, setting mechanisms of two-way and interactive communication with the audience, producing multimedia content exploitable on various platforms and clearly defining and justifying the value added of their offer- ings compared to those of commercial competitors. Using the method of case study, the thesis matches this conceptual framework with the situation in Czech Television and Czech...
