Recent statistical studies suggest the proportion of Hispanic students within our nation’s classrooms is growing at a significant rate, experiencing the highest increase in numbers of any other ethnic group. These students require resources conducive to English language learning which also honor the Hispanic/Latino culture. Yet, out of 3,400 books received by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) in 2011, only 52 were penned or created by Latino authors/ illustrators. This number is expected to decline over the coming years. This insufficiency is an enormous challenge to librarians who strive to empower the Hispanic student population and promote cultural diversity among all students. Empowering Learners, (p. 53) reminds us that librarians offer materials and services to accommodate the needs of children for whom English is a second language. The library program ideally seeks to reflect the linguistic and cultural pluralism of our country. How can we arise to this need? Librarians succeed in supporting Hispanic students by utilizing Pura Belpré award-winning titles. This accolade is presented annually by the Association of Library Services to Children (a division of the ALA) to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work “best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth,” embodying the essence of the Latino culture. The promotion of Pura Belpre’ titles, the delivery of associated crafts and activities as well as the use of online resources serve as indispensable tools to assist the librarian in enriching the literary experiences of Hispanic learners and celebrating the Latino heritage with all children. In our session, we share in-depth knowledge of selected titles with correlating crafts and activities. Attendees will leave the session with practical, concrete instructional ideas, ready for immediate use.

La tesis, asumido el carácter novedoso que Schopenhauer confiere a su filosofía, parte del presupuesto de que Kant, Schopenhuaer y Nietzsche constituyen una secuencia histórica capital en la crisis del concepto moderno de razón. Desde ese presupuesto, se expone la filosofía de Schopenhauer estructurada en torno a cuatro capítulos: Capítulo I: Schopenhauer y la filosofía de Kant (el sentido en que Schopenhauer, según su propia afirmación es continuador de Kant); Capítulo II: Una filosofía de perspectivas: Schopenhauer entre el materialismo y el idealismo (pretende precisar la posición schopenhaueriana frente al realismo y al espiritualismo); Capítulo III: Materia y Voluntad. Nominalismo y Platonismo. Hacia una nueva antropología. (planteado en tres secciones: el mundo como Voluntad; el mundo como representación y aportaciones a la antropología). Capítulo IV: La cultura: el arte y la moral como formas de la cultura.(ante el carácter negativo de la realidad y el pesimismo de su metafísica, es la cultura frente a la idea de progreso, la forma superior de conocimiento. Todo ello se expone en permanente discusión con Kant y Nietzsche. En esta tesis, se hace patente que la filosofía de Schopenhauer conserva plena actualidad como punto de reflexión para la desazonada conciencia contemporánea. / Once the novelty that Schopenhauer confers his philosophy is assumed, the thesis starts from the proposal that Kant, Schopenhuaer and Nietzsche constitute a historical sequence of import within the crisis of the modern concept of reason. Schopenhauer´s philosophy is expounded over four chapters from this perspective, with the intention of showing that it is thus fulfilled: Chapter I: Schopenhauer and the philosophy of Kant (which sets out the sense in which Schopenhauer, according to his own declaration, is a continuation de Kant); Chapter II: A philosophy of perspectives: Schopenhauer between materialism and idealism (this chapter seeks to define precisely the Schopenhauerian position towards realism and spiritualism); Chapter III: Matter and Will. Nominalism and Platonism. Towards a new anthropology (three sections in all). Chapter IV: Culture: art and morals as forms of culture (the last proposal of Schopenhauer in the face of the negative character of reality and the pessimism that his metaphysics places to the fore is culture versus the idea of a predominant progress within the era, culture which is embodied in art, a higher form of knowledge, which momentarily silences the bitter fight for life, and in morals which reaches it zenith in the negation of life). All this is presented in continued discussion with Kant and Nietzsche. Schopenhauer´s philosophy recovers full actuality in this thesis as a point of thinking for the upsetting modern conscience.

É inegável que as passagens B 560 e B 586 da Crítica da Razão Pura sejam paradoxais. Isso porque, embora Kant tenha afirmado haver uma possibilidade da liberdade na solução da terceira antinomia (B 560), de forma aparentemente contraditória a esse resultado, alega, numa passagem da nona seção do segundo capítulo do segundo livro da dialética transcendental, sequer ter tido o problema de demonstrar a possibilidade daquele conceito. Esse problema, correlato à dificuldade de compatibilizar- se aquelas passagens, é a causa motriz do engendramento deste texto dissertativo. Logo, por meio dele, busca-se explicar por que razão tais passagens não são contraditórias. Não o são, porque a acepção do termo “possibilidade” nelas empregadas é ambígua, ou seja, possui mais de um significado. Como veremos, distinguindo o significado dos conceitos de possibilidade aí envolvidos, pode-se defender uma possibilidade lógica da idéia transcendental da liberdade enquanto númeno. Mas seria tal possibilidade lógica do conceito da liberdade transcendental um princípio regulativo? Que princípio regulativo seria ele? Ao se analisar esse segundo problema dissertativo, delimitando-se a segunda questão à relação da possibilidade da liberdade com os princípios regulativos em seu uso empírico, conclui-se que estes conceitos têm acepções totalmente distintas. Isso porque, uma vez que eles possuem diferentes funções no itinerário da razão: enquanto um procura deixar em aberto um espaço numênico, o outro, abre espaço para o regresso empírico das inferências, a fim de que a razão especulativa não se atenha indevidamente a um incondicionado ilusório.

A hiperbolicidade parcial será caracterizada pela existência de um campo de cones positivamente invariante satisfazendo uma condição de expansão não uniforme num conjunto de medida de Lebesgue positiva. Mostramos ainda que existem no máximo um número finito de medidas SRB e que, caso o difeomorfismo local seja transitivo, existe uma única medida SRB. Provamos a estabilidade estatística destas medidas, assumindo que vale a expansão não uniforme no campo de cones robustamente e com constantes uniformes. Finalmente, apresentamos exemplos de perturbações de endomorfismos de Anosov em que podemos aplicar nossos resultados

A conjectura de Smale estabelece que a maioria dos sistemas dinâmicos tem centralizador trivial, significando que toda a dinâmica que comuta com a original é um reescalonamento temporal da mesma. Neste trabalho, mostramos a trivialidade do centralizador para as seguintes classes de sistemas dinâmicos: (i) conjunto aberto de campos de classe C1 com singularidades hiperbólicas não-ressonantes e que satisfazem a Komuro-expansividade, os quais contém o atrator de Lorenz clássico como caso particular; (ii) conjunto Baire residual de campos conservativos de classe C1; (iii) conjunto Baire residual de campos hamiltonianos de classe C1. Além disso, provamos que o conjunto das ações de Rd localmente livres, expansivas e de classe C1 têm centralizador quase-trivial. Em particular, obtivemos os seguintes: (i) Rd-ações Anosov transitivas em variedades compactas têm centralizador quase-trivial; (ii) caracterização de sub-ações expansivas de ações de Rd.

Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil / A hanseníase neural pura (NP) caracteriza-se pelo comprometimento nervoso sem o aparecimento de lesões cutâneas. O objetivo do estudo foi descrever as alterações neurológicas observadas na forma NP e caracterizar a funcionalidade e as incapacidades encontradas nestes pacientes. Trata-se de um estudo retrospectivo, realizado com dados de 79 pacientes que confirmaram diagnóstico de NP acompanhados no Ambulatório Souza Araújo (ASA), no período de 2000 a 2010. As informações foram obtidas a partir de prontuários médicos e de bancos de dados. A Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde (CIF) foi aplicada a partir da análise das avaliações neurológicas e fisioterapêuticas. Foi realizada uma análise de frequência para verificar a distribuição dos casos de NP em relação às variáveis demográficas, socioeconômicas e epidemiológicas (no diagnóstico), às variáveis do exame neurológico, ao grau de incapacidade física (GIF) e aos códigos da CIF (no diagnóstico e na alta). Para avaliar as características demográficas, socioeconômicas e epidemiológicas, foi realizada uma comparação entre o grupo de pacientes NP com o grupo de 634 pacientes com hanseníase paucibacilar (PB), acompanhados no ASA, no mesmo período dos pacientes NP. Além disso, foi investigada a relação do grau de incapacidade física no diagnóstico com as variáveis socioeconômicas e demográficas dos dois grupos de pacientes, através do teste de qui-quadrado (2). A maioria dos pacientes NP (71%) e PB (57,5%) era do sexo masculino e em relação à faixa etária, os pacientes NP foram acometidos mais tardiamente pela hanseníase do que os pacientes PB. A maior proporção dos pacientes NP (55%) e PB (47,5%) estava empregada e trabalhava no mercado informal. A renda familiar mensal não diferiu significativamente entre os grupos. Quanto à escolaridade, a maior parte dos pacientes apresentava até oito anos de estudo. Em relação ao modo de detecção, a maior proporção dos pacientes foi encaminhada ao ASA por meio algum serviço público de saúde. Quanto às alterações neurológicas nos pacientes NP, o sintoma inicial relatado com mais frequência foi a parestesia (52%) e o sinal predominante observado no exame diagnóstico foi a alteração de sensibilidade (87%). Na avaliação de alta, houve uma menor proporção de todos os sinais e sintomas neurológicos. Em relação ao GIF, 44,3% dos pacientes apresentaram algum GIF e na alta, 24% dos indivíduos permaneceram com algum grau de incapacidade. No tocante à CIF, dentro do domínio ―Estruturas do Corpo‖, o código mais frequente foi ―nervos raquidianos‖ (s1201) e no domínio ―Função do Corpo‖, o código mais frequente foi ―sensibilidade à temperatura‖ (b2700) no diagnóstico e ―sensibilidade a estímulos nocivos‖ (b2703) na alta. Este estudo apontou uma associação entre baixas condições socioeconômicas e um pior escore de GIF e caracterizou funcionalmente os pacientes NP. / The Pure Neural Leprosy (PNL) is characterized by neural involvement without the appearance of skin lesions. The goal of the study was to describe the neurological changes observed in the PNL and to characterize the functionality and the disabilities found in these patients. This is a retrospective study, conducted with 79 patients who confirmed diagnosis of PNL accompanied at Souza Araújo Clinic (ASA), from 2000 to 2010.The information was obtained from patient records and databases. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) was applied from the neurological and physiotherapeutic evaluations. A frequency analysis was conducted to verify the distribution of cases of PNL in relation to demographic and socioeconomic variables (diagnosis), neurological examination variables, grade of disability (GD) and ICF codes (upon diagnosis and release from treatment). In order to assess demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, a comparative study was undertaken between the PNL patients and the 634 paucibacillary leprosy (PB) patients, accompanied at ASA, during the same period as the PNL patients. Furthermore, the relationship between the GD at diagnosis with socioeconomic and demographic variables of two groups of patients was investigated using the chi-squared test, (2). The majority of PNL patients (71%) and PB (57.5%) were male and PNL patients were affected by leprosy at a later age than PB patients. The largest proportion of PNL patients (55%) and PB (47.5%) was employed in the informal market. The monthly household income did not differ significantly between groups. With regard to schooling, most patients had up to eight years of study. In relation to detection, the largest proportion of patients was referred to ASA from other public health services. With regard to neurological alterations in PNL patients, the most frequently reported initial symptom was the paresthesia (52%) and the predominant sign observed in the examination diagnosis was sensory alteration (87%). At evaluation after release from treatment, there was an overall reduction of all neurological signs and symptoms. Regarding GD, 44.3% of the patients had some GD, and at release from treatment, while 24% of individuals remained with some grade of disability. Regarding ICF, within the domain "Body Structures", the most frequent code was "spinal nerves" (s1201) and in the field "Body Functions", the most frequent code was "Sensitivity to Temperature" (b2700) at diagnosis and "Sensitivity to Noxious Stimuli" (b2703) at release from treatment. This study noted an association between low socio-economic conditions and a worse ICF score and characterized PNL patients functionally.

It is argued an essential function of the unconditioned for the preparation of logical and transcendental activities of speculative reason. There is in this work, in a new light, the defense of exposition of some theses about the following sub-themes: 1) the origin of transcendent concepts necessary mode in consciousness; 2) the definition of transcendental appearance; 3) the development and solution of the antinomy of pure reason; 4) the definition of transcendental freedom; 5) the exposition of the function of speculative reason in the establishment of scientific knowledge. Themes (1) and (2) are covered in the first chapter through the exposition of the function of representation of the unconditioned in the development of subjective derivation of transcendental ideas carried out by Kant, of A293/B349 to A338/B396, in the Critique of Pure Reason. Themes (3) and (4) are treated in the second chapter, specifically in the presentation of the results of the research about The Antinomy of Pure Reason, in the second chapter of the second book of the Transcendental Dialectic, of A405/B432 to A568/B596. The theme (5) is found in the third chapter and it is presented by the defense of the thesis that the speculative reason has a vital role to scientific knowledge, it is obtained from the study about Appendix of the Transcendental Dialectic, of A642 / B670 to A705 / B733. It is defended here, ultimately, that all these issues are based on a fundamental thesis that permeates all Transcendental Dialectic, namely that the unconditioned can be determined as a transcendental element with a regulative empirical use of all experience to establish a systematic unity of all objective knowledge. / O tema central desta Tese é a representação do incondicionado dentro da Crítica da Razão Pura. Defende-se uma função imprescindível do incondicionado para elaboração das atividades lógica e transcendental da razão especulativa. Encontra-se aqui, sob uma nova ótica, a apresentação da defesa de algumas teses acerca dos seguintes temas secundários: 1) a origem de conceitos transcendentes de modo necessário no pensamento; 2) a definição de aparência transcendental; 3) a elaboração e solução da antinomia da razão pura; 4) a definição de liberdade transcendental; 5) a exposição da função da razão especulativa no estabelecimento do conhecimento científico. Os temas (1) e (2) são abordados no primeiro capítulo através da exposição da função da representação do incondicionado no desenvolvimento da derivação subjetiva das ideias transcendentais realizada por Kant na Crítica da Razão Pura de A293/B349 a A338/B396. Os temas (3) e (4) são tratados no segundo capítulo, mais precisamente na apresentação dos resultados da investigação do A Antinomia da Razão Pura, segundo capítulo do segundo livro da Dialética Transcendental, de A405/B432 a A568/B596. O tema (5) é encontrado no terceiro capítulo e será apresentado através da defesa da tese, obtida a partir do estudo do Apêndice da Dialética Transcendental, de A642/B670 a A705/B733, que a razão especulativa tem uma função imprescindível para o conhecimento científico. Defender-se-á, em última análise, que todos esses temas são fundamentados em uma tese de fundo que perpassa toda Dialética Transcendental, a saber, que o incondicionado pode ser determinado como elemento transcendental com um uso empírico regulativo de toda experiência para o estabelecimento de uma unidade sistemática de todo conhecimento objetivo.
