Family Attitudes, Beliefs, And Practices Facilitating A Sense Of Purpose In Black American Children And Youth: A Grounded Theory

i ABSTRACT Sense of purpose is strongly associated with positive health behaviors and academic achievement (Turner-Musa & Lipscomb, 2007, Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics FIFCFS, 2010). The purpose of this qualitative research study was to develop grounded theory by the exploration of sense of purpose by describing and interpreting attitudes, beliefs, and practices among Black American families participating in an outreach program in Southern, IL. Grounded theory was used to explain the phenomenon of sense of purpose, and the relationship among optimism, faith, hope, spirituality and sense of meaning. A non probability purposive sample was used for the study. The sample consisted of 10 families, which were comprised of 26 individual, seven Black American mothers, one Black American father, one Black American grandmother, one Caucasian guardian and 16 children. Data collection included audio-taping first order narratives derived through individual interviews, field notes and observations in the homes of the participating families. Findings included identifying common and less common categories. The common categories were God, relationships, education, communication, financial security, autonomy and independence, leadership qualities, perseverance, self efficacy, life lessons, cooperation and opportunities. Less common categories, appearing in at least one family, were discipline and structure, and celebration of life. The central category linking all the categories and constructs together was identified as communication. Some causal affects influenced the prevalence of certain categories and how they were connected to the five constructs. These causal affects were poverty, parental education levels, and illness.

Die potensiele teikengroepe, hul vlakke van geloofsverbintenis en hulle behoeftes word nie na behore ge!dentifiseer nie. 'n Doelgedrewe jeugbediening-strategie kan 'n moontlike oplossing vrr bogenoemde probleme wees. Dit moet veral aan die volgende aandag skenk: Fokus op 'n duidelike doelstelling, op jongmense se behoeftes en op 'n doelgedrewe benadering. No purpose-driven plan and -strategy are visible. The focus is on maintaining the youth group, programs and activities. The potential target groups, their levels of faith commitment and their needs are not identified properly. A purpose-driven youth ministry strategy may be a possible solution to the above-mentioned problems. It should especially give attention to the following: Focus on a clear purpose statement, on young people's needs and on a purpose-driven approach. In particular, there should be a 5pesific style or approach with which youth ministry is launched, namely an intergenerational strategy. The congregation as a community of faith and as a lifelong care structure should be the context within youth ministry occurs. This project aims to design a safe and healthy space for orphan girls in Iraq, considering their needs and culture. Moreover, to set a foundation for girls to grow and become confident young individuals. My approach to this project was working both in plan and perspective. From the first days of the project, I started drawing the qualities that I was looking for in the design in perspective. Moreover, this is an extensive project, on a 1400 square meter site, so one of the important aspects of the project was to have a language through the design that makes the project coherent. In this book final renders are presented along with the initial ideas and sketches. Iraq is chosen because "there are 11,000 children addicted to drugs in Baghdad, that many girls aged 12 to 16 years old have been victims of abuse, and that many girls aged 12 years and above have endured harassment." This project shows that a well-thought design can improve the lives of orphaned girls, and hopefully, the outcome will raise awareness for the education and well-being of orphaned girls in Iraq. / Master of Architecture / Life is not easy, even when you live in a healthy family. Now, imagine what it looks like when you are traumatized as a kid. Kids who lost their parents in the war or are traumatized by their own family have a blurry glass on their eyes; they are confused about their feelings and experiences and often have difficulties trusting others and making meaningful connections. Moreover, orphan kids who had observed severe scenes may have panic attacks. Traumatized kids have very specific needs that the architectural design of their environment should address.

Effects of purpose of appraisal on leniency errors: An exploration of self-efficacy as a mediating variable

The purpose of this study was to explore the causal relationship between purpose of appraisal and leniency in performance ratings. A model in which rater self-efficacy mediated the relationship between appraisal purpose and leniency was tested. In addition, behavioral recognition accuracy was hypothesized to affect rater leniency. In a laboratory setting, 109 undergraduate raters judged the videotaped performance of a graduate teaching assistant. Results of the study showed that (a) leniency was positively related to task-specific self-efficacy, and (b) behavioral recognition accuracy was positively related to general rating self-efficacy. A purpose of appraisal effect was not observed and the proposed mediational model was not supported. These results were discussed in relation to rater affect, accountability in performance ratings, and information processing. / Master of Science

Brands have grown to become a bigger part in our daily life, brands can be seen wherever we go. Due to growing competition in markets brands have become more keen to find new ways to compete. Purpose marketing is one tool to tackle the growing competition. Purpose marketing have grown to become an effective tool to differentiate in competitive markets. This essay intends to study how companies use purpose marketing in the process of building a brand. The research methodology has semi-structured intervievs with a qualitative approach. All of the respondents work in Swedish companies within the marketing or communication section. The theoretical framework consist of theories about branding, brand positioning and purpose marketing. The result showed a glimpse of similarities in terms of how companies use purpose marketing though no major conclusions could be drawn from the results. / Varumärken har blivit en del av vår vardag, det växande intresset för varumärken visar på hur marknader blivit allt mer konkurrensutsatta där fler aktörer erbjuder likartade varor och tjänster. Ett sätt att differentiera sig på marknaden är att bygga ett varumärke för att ha ett till sätt att konkurrera med. Ett tydligt varumärke kan underlätta för konsumenten i de val som blir allt fler. För att bygga ett starkt varumärke krävs en tydlig strategi och riktning för organisationen. I takt med ett minskat intresse för reklam har syftesdriven marknadsföring blivit vanligare. Allt fler konsumenter väljer varumärken som delar deras värderingar, att skapa en emotionell koppling till kunden blir allt viktigare. Syftesdriven marknadsföring innebär att organisationen använder sig av positiva effekter företaget har på samhället för att marknadsföra sig. I takt med att sociala medier växt till att bli en del av vardagen blir det svårare för företag att förmedla ett budskap och sedan inte leva efter det. Att lyfta företags positiva effekter på samhället är en central del i syftesdriven marknadsföring vilket kan bidra till ökad lojalitet hos kunder samt motivation hos anställda. I denna kvalitativa studie undersöks hur företag använder sig av syftesdriven marknadsföring vid uppbyggnad av varumärket. Syftesdriven marknadsföring som har blivit allt vanligare bland företag att använda sig av men som det inte finns mycket forskning inom. Uppsatsen har för avsikt att försöka bidra med en djupare förståelse kring hur syftesdriven marknadsföring används av företag vid uppbyggnad av varumärket. En kvalitativ forskningsdesign i form av en komparativ studie har tillämpats för att undersöka hur olika företag skiljer sig åt men även om det finns några likheter mellan företag inom olika branscher som använder sig av syftesdriven marknadsföring. Studien omfattar fyra svenska företag med en respondent med beslutsfattande position inom marknadsföring från varje företag. Teorierna som valts är varumärkespositionering, varumärkesbyggande, CSR och syftesdriven marknadsföring som anses vara relevanta för studien. Analys av den empiriska data mot uppsatsens teorier har visat på hur respondenterna använder sig av syftesdriven marknadsföring till vis del men inte bidragit med några generella slutsatser kring hur företag använder sig av syftesdriven marknadsföring. De olika företagen har alla använt sig av syftesdriven marknadsföring på sitt egna vis, däremot har det visat på likheter i grundtankar kring syftesdriven marknadsföring.
