Improve project management by using Six Sigma tools : An empirical study in Siemens Industrial Turbomachinary

Lin, Yang, Guannan, Feng January 2012 (has links)
Traditional project management has been implemented by most of the companies in today’s business world in order to monitor and control the projects (Tonnquist, 2008). Project management techniques have been proven for decades and its performance has been maximized (Heldman, 2011). We think that the PM techniques have gradually reached its limits. For today’s companies, it is vital to find a more effective and innovative method which can be integrated into the project management in order to maintain their competitive advantages (Pyzdek, 2003).   As a relatively new business management approach and strategy, Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of the product and process by using some quantitative methods and tools (Michalski, 2003). Actually, Six Sigma has been broadly implemented in many companies and received a positive effect (Pande et al., 2000). However, most of the Six Sigma usage happens just in the Six Sigma projects and these projects need the great support from the top-management level and require plenty of resources for training and maintain (Pande et al., 2002).   The purpose of this thesis is to suggest an approach/methodology for how simple Six Sigma tools and methods can be combined with the traditional project management. In this case, those non-Six Sigma projects can still use some easy Six Sigma techniques to maximize the benefits. In order to achieve this purpose, the following methodologies are implemented: literature review to identify relative factors including quality, time, cost, communication and customer satisfaction, surveys and interviews to find out the current situations and problems in Siemens Industrial Turbo machinery (SIT) project management, empirical studies to develop some models and methods in which Six Sigma tools are integrated in the project management in SIT.   In this thesis, based on the empirical research of the case company of SIT, we are going to suggest some Six Sigma tools to be integrated into project management. The research questions include:   How can the selected Six Sigma tools improve the project management? The Pros and Cons of implementing Six Sigma methods and tools in the project management. What tools of Six Sigma are suitable to increase the performance of the project management in SIT   As the result of this thesis work, once it is testified it is feasible and fit in the SIT project management process, we think that there is a great chance it should be amplified and spread to many more business areas.

Framtagning av ny lyftytrystning för gasturbin SGT-600/700 / Designing New Lifting Equipment for Gas Turbine SGT-600/700

Sjöberg, Emma January 2008 (has links)
In this master thesis new lifting equipment for Siemens gas turbines SGT-600/700 has been designed. It was carried out at Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB in Finspång at the department for Package Installation, GPTP. The purpose of the thesis is to develop new lifting equipment that is more flexible than the lifting equipment at use, and that the new equipment is able to be handled with two lifting cranes. The project has been carried out with help from several methods like QFD (quality function deployment method), function means tree, and morphological matrix, with customer focused concept design as the foundational method. First theoretical methods to solve the problem are studied. After that a thorough study of the lifting equipment that is available today is done. Then the problem is studied to generate a solution environment. Several conceptual solutions are generated and the best concept is developed further and drawing materials are generated. The current lifting equipment is different depending on which module should be lifted; some parts are the same but not all. Lifting equipment that looks the same for all modules is more flexible. With the current lifting equipment it takes a big lifting crane to handle the whole load, which is a problem when the nearest harbour does not have such a big lifting crane. In those cases extra long land transports have to take place, which are very expensive. A solution which allows two lifting cranes to work together is preferred, that will lead to shorter land transports and reduced transport costs. The new lifting equipment has a lot fewer parts and is more flexible than the equipment in use. The new equipment can also be handled with two lifting cranes, due to the new lifting beam. The same lifting equipment is able to lift all SGT-600 and SGT-700 modules. This means that the gas turbine packages can be unloaded at most harbours in the world which leads to shorter land transports, when the nearest harbour can be used. This means that the cost for transport can be reduced. Hopefully this work gives Siemens better and more flexible lifting equipment if it is implemented.

Design of A Therapeutic Light Device Using Kano’s Model and A Decision-making Method Based on HOQ

Feng, Bohan 07 February 2014 (has links)
In this research, a therapeutic light device is developed based on customer requirements. The quality function deployment (QFD) is initially used to transfer customer requirements to design parameters. However, several inherent shortcomings of QFD method are identified based on the design evaluation and the customer feedback of the initially proposed model. In the process of improving the initial model, the correlation information is used in ranking technical measurement and components. A decision-making method is proposed to generate an optimal model for the selection of appropriate components. Kano’s model is applied to enhance the customer’s requirement of “good looking”. The result shows that the improved model satisfies the customer with good overall performance.

An Integrated Qfd Approach To Determine Quality Improvement Priorities In Manufacturing

Mertoglu, Benin 01 January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, a tool is developed for determining priorities of quality improvement activities for manufacturing operations, for the purposes of both quality and throughput improvement. This tool utilizes Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Theory of Constraints (TOC), Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodologies. The use of the tool is demonstrated on an example problem. The results obtained under different experimental conditions are compared with solutions of more popular, simple decision-making measures, and the optimal solutions obtained from a mathematical model. The analysis shows that the proposed tool gives close solutions to optimal, and it can easily be applied in a typical manufacturing setting. This study also demonstrates how various different methodologies can be integrated for the purposes of quality and throughput improvement in shorter times.

Campus landscape space planning and design using QFD

Yang, Huan 12 July 2007 (has links)
Millions of people live and work on college campuses everyday. The environment they dwell and interact with is essential to their quality of life and health. There is no doubt that the campus landscape is of great importance to millions of students, faculty, and staff on campus. Surrounding communities are also significantly affected by college campuses as colleges often provide education and social events, as well as economic activities. However, in the past, the design of campus landscape spaces have been overlooked or treated as a leftover of buildings, even though campus landscape spaces are more than the "faces" of colleges. With more and more colleges and universities expanding and redesigning their landscape spaces, the design of campus landscape space has gained more recognition in the recent twenty years. One of the significant changes in the design process is the taking of users' needs/concerns into account. This change is influenced by a community-based design concept found in Active Living and Public Spaces design. While Active Living and Public Spaces design emphasizes the importance of user involvement and different techniques in soliciting user input, there is a missing link between user input and the design program elements. In this thesis, I examine the past practice of campus landscape space design and propose using Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to fill in this missing link. QFD has been used in various industries, including service and manufacturing, for years. It emphasizes the importance of taking users' needs, called Voice of Customers (VOC), into the design process. The employment of different matrices to capture the relationship between VOC and subsequent design and quality characteristics makes QFD a unique framework suitable to fill the gap in the current design process. A case study of campus landscape space design is conducted to examine the applicability of QFD in campus landscape space design, including the advantages, the obstacles, and the unique condition of using QFD in landscape design. The study yields several insights on the application of QFD in campus landscape space design, which are applicable in other landscape design projects. / Master of Landscape Architecture
