Developing an Interactive Web-Based Database for Teaching Plant Materials

Weerasinghe, Kanchana S 17 May 2014 (has links)
In today’s increasingly fast-moving, complex, and competitive world, the need for flexibility and creativity in teaching and learning is crucial. For that reason, innovative educational methods should be introduced. In education, web-based learning and portable devices are emerging as teaching and learning aids which can be efficient and effective tools. Learning use and identification of ornamental plants are the main objectives of the plant materials courses offered by Department of Plant and Soils Sciences at Mississippi State University (MSU). The professors, teaching assistants (TA), and students use the MSU gardens to study and identify ornamental plant species. This can be time consuming for both instructors and students. This research developed an automated web-based database system to deliver information on the ornamental plants in the MSU gardens. Apache, MySQL, PHP, JavaScript, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop software were used to develop this application in the Windows environment and information about each plant was entered into the database. Plant locations were given by longitude and latitude coordinates and linked to Google maps. Quick Response codes(QR code) were created to directly access ornamental plant information at the field. This database may function as a virtual TA for the plant materials courses and as an information source for the public. Users can search the ornamental plant information and determine the location of plants using a computer or mobile device. Plant information can be retrieved from the field by a smart phone with a QR code reader. To evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of developed automated system, an experimental study and questionnaire survey were designed.

U.S. consumer preferences for blockchain-based traceability of leafy greens

Giri, Ajita 06 August 2021 (has links) (PDF)
High-profile outbreaks in the U.S. have been increasingly linked to the consumption of leafy greens (Xue et al. 2007), making traceability an important issue (Corkery and Popper 2018). Consumers' increasing attention to traceability (Hansstein 2014) has led to the implementation of blockchain-based traceability systems. This study measures U.S. consumers' willingness-to-pay (WTP) for blockchain-based traceability information in packages of romaine lettuce and spinach. We conduct two online Discrete Choice Experiments (DCEs) and surveys to understand consumer preferences for USDA-certified organic leafy greens, access to blockchain-based traceability information via QR codes, and the FDA's voluntary labeling guidelines involving growing region information. Our findings suggest that some U.S. consumers are willing to pay a premium for food products with blockchain-based traceability or standard traceability information delivered via QR-codes. Findings also reflect some consumers' interest in organic products, and in knowing the detailed growing region information, particularly if leafy greens are grown in Arizona.

Designed QR codes : An innovative way to invoke interaction

Hedvall, Liam January 2023 (has links)
This study approaches the question of how to use QR codes as a physical tool to attractconsumers to a digital platform. This is done by creating designs for three companies anddisplaying them publicly in different locations. In total, the designed QR codes were scanned15 times across all 11 locations and were affected by things such as location, design, andamount of displayed information. This was followed by a survey (N=51) which concluded thatthey rarely scan QR codes due to, as an example, lack of interest in the information. Despitethe low scan rates of the tested designs, the respondents of the survey view the tool assomething to make things accessible quickly and efficiently. Companies were also interviewed(N=5) and had a generally positive view on QR codes, some using them more than others.

Effectiveness of pull-based print advertising with QR codes Role of consumer involvement and advertisement appeal

Trivedi, Rohit, Teichert, T., Hardeck, D. 12 December 2019 (has links)
Yes / Despite quick response (QR) codes’ prominence, little is known about their embedding in pullbased communications. This study aims to measure QR code effects in print advertising along five different stages of consumer decision making, using advertisement appeals with moderating effects of product category involvement. Data were derived from a German market research initiative with 326,212 consumer evaluations for 792 real print advertisements from 26 product categories. Multinomial logit models were used to investigate the effects of QR code presence on consumer reactions. QR codes steer purchase intention in a low-involvement product category if used alongside an emotional appeal. Advertisements for high-involvement products benefit if QR codes are combined with an overall informational appeal. QR codes do not enhance the persuasive effects of advertisements’ informational appeals in a low-involvement product category. The effects of QR codes on consumers’ responses cannot be analysed in isolation but depend on advertisement context. They interact with advertisements’ informational and emotional appeals and product category involvement. Marketers should not use QR codes indiscriminately but should carefully consider advertisement context. QR codes should be used alongside an emotional appeal if the marketer’s objective is to induce purchase intention in low-involvement settings. Advertisements for high-involvement products need to combine QR codes with an informational appeal. This study highlights the interplay of effects in print advertisements, which are typically considered push-based when they are combined with QR codes as pull-based communications in the digital marketing area.

行動二維條碼在台灣的接受因素與發展應用之研究 / Acceptance, development and application of QR code in Taiwan: An extension of the Technology Acceptance Model

康皓鈞, Kang, Hao Chun Unknown Date (has links)
The development and application of QR code is quite advanced in Japan and Korea; in contrast, at the time when QR code was introduced in Taiwan, lack of mobile phone support and the and the limited applications of QR code meant that it was not immediately popularized in Taiwan. In recent years, the growing popularity of smart phones has enhanced the various applications of QR code, not only providing the information to the user, but also performing navigation, marketing and ticketing functions, to name a few. This study is based on the Technology Acceptance Model, with Social Influence, Facilitating Conditions, Awareness Knowledge, Operation Knowledge and Price as the usage factors, and by verifying the structural modeling through public surveys and analyzing the importance of the Acceptance Model and other influences of users in Taiwan as the driving factors in incorporating QR code applications in the government, telecommunication carrier and business spheres. The study results indicate that Social Influences and Facilitating Conditions are major influencing factors of Intention to Use, followed by the Perceived Ease of Use and Perceived Usefulness; the Awareness Knowledge and Operation Knowledge affect the Perceived Ease of Use and Perceived Usefulness, and indirectly affect the Intention to Use. The top three QR code services that users in Taiwan are interested in relate to information about shops and tourist points of interest, coupon downloading and the fast input of business cards. Therefore, support of the continued development of public media and smart phones, the provision of tourism information and coupons along with other applications of QR code would be factors for consideration by a telecommunication carrier proposing to integrate QR code in its services.

Detecção de códigos QR em imagens com enquadramento arbitrário / QR Code detection in arbitrarily acquired images

Belussi, Luiz Felipe Franco 30 July 2012 (has links)
The use of QR codes by visually impaired people and robots expands the applications of this technology and enables many possibilities that are emerging in a crescent number of scientific papers. QR code decoding relies on prior framing of the symbol during image acquisition. The detection of these symbols is the first step in the construction of a system to assist the framing process. This work presents an approach for the detection of QR codes in arbitrarily acquired images. The proposed approach is a component-based one consisting of two stages, where parts of the symbol are first detected through the fast object detection method proposed by Viola-Jones, and then an analysis of the set of detected parts is carried subsequently in order to determine the exact location of the symbol in the scene. The adaptation of the framework proposed by Viola-Jones for this new application domain is described in detail. The influence of various training and detection parameters of the framework in QR code detection is discussed using a series of experiments. The performance of the proposed approach is presented in terms of result quality and processing time and it is concluded that the proposed approach indicates a promising direction in solving the problem of detecting QR codes in arbitrarily acquired images in the majority of real world situations.

Effect of Scaffolded Questioning on English Reading Comprehension in a Paper-based and Digital Materials Seamlessly Integrated System

Lee, Cheng-Han 25 August 2010 (has links)
Reading from paper-based materials has been a major way for people to acquire knowledge. However, paper-based materials are constricted in presenting abstract and complex knowledge or concepts. Recent development of smartphone makes it a device not only for interpersonal communication, but also for accessing rich digital resources over the Internet. Because both paper-based materials and smartphone are mobile and portable, we can make use of the networking capability of smartphone to access digital materials from the Internet to enrich conventional paper-based reading activities such that students¡¦ reading comprehension can be enhanced. The present study came up with an innovative paper-based reading system integrated with digital materials delivered from the smartphone. QR codes were employed to automatically link the content of the print material with relevant digital resources. Also, questions were given to students along the reading process to scaffold the reading activity in order to help students comprehend the essence of the reading pieces. A quasi-experimental design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the learning system in improving students¡¦ reading comprehension. The results suggested that whether or not using QR code to automate linking digital and print materials does not significantly influence student reading comprehension; however, using questions to scaffold the reading process significantly improves students¡¦ reading comprehension. The survey conducted in the experiment suggested that most of the students agreed that the integrated learning system benefits English reading comprehension. The implication of the results and suggestions to system design and future studies were then addressed.
