Corpos (trans)formados no cinema

Silva, Caio Ramos da January 2018 (has links)
The present research seeks to undertake a mapping of cinematographic productions, national and international, that deal with transgender characters. From this procedure, we observe the regularities that emerged from this set of productions. We aim to trace a path that inscribes this effort in a micropolitical plan, since it critically questions the communicational and discursive practices of hegemonic cinema. To do so, we explore approximations and tensions provoked by queer studies, considering here it is this set of notions that best account for thinking the trans condition as a displacement that imposes itself on the male / female binary system and, as a consequence, on the sex / gender system . This course, conducted even under a discursive / Foucaultian bias, entails a deep questioning of what constitutes the human being when interrogating biopowers, the limits of the body and the regimes of truth that produce it. Thus, this research is guided by the following question: how are the discourses that produce and express trans bodies in cinema? We start from the analysis of the films Boys Don’t Cry (1999), Tomboy (2011), In a Year of 13 Moons (1978), Tiresia (2003), Wild Side (2004), Vera (1987), Tangerine (2015) and Paris is Burning (1991) to examine observed regularities, assuming that it is possible to interrogate the conditions of possibility of new ways of expressing transgender experiences, in order to configure significant escape lines for audiovisuals.

Sevilla, Gabriela Garcia January 2014 (has links)
Provocative reflections have already been produced in the intersection of gender and sexuality studies (according to post-structuralism perspective) with the education and cultural studies field, which help show the learned character of the ways to be a man and a woman in our society. Gender pedagogies purposed by Guacira Louro were used in this research in order to analyze how different cultural artifacts teach and reiterate particular norms referred to the feminine and the masculine and also how these very artifacts make possible changes and possibilities of norms subversion. Interview analyzes conceived by Laerte, cartoonist who has been gaining media notoriety and visibility due to his ethical, esthetical and political experiences related to gender and sexuality, are purposed, discussing which norm questionings open or reproduce themselves from it through problematisation and multiplication of such concepts as well as the dichotomies fragmentations. This “case” is assumed to be a cultural artifact – Laerte on media – and, therefore, as a privileged place to launch a look about the Brazilian society related to the issues which involve gender, sexuality and body in the media in such extension which generates repercussion and a great interest from the press. It is also because it focuses on a way of life considered “strange”, unusual or even “abnormal”. Thus, it is believed that, once launching our look to the margins, much will be understood about the center and also about the constitution of these boarders and its possible crossings, that is to say, of the transgression and subversion possibilities of the norms which constitute the heteronormative active system.

Mulheres no octógono : performatividades de corpos e de sexualidades

Grespan, Carla Lisboa January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation thematizes women who play sports socially considered masculine, focusing on inclusion of professional fighters in the Mixed Martial Arts and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). It aims to analyze whether performativities of the bodies and sexualities reiterate and / or subvert the discourses on gender relations which permeate the body and sports practices. The theoretical assumptions used to dialogue with the empirical data are the Post-Structuralist theories and, above all, Gender Studies and Queer, since they offer higher academic visibility to issues of social and biotechnological transformation of the body, as well as issues related to gender and sexuality. Within this perspective, the research investigates the articulation of media discourse in the news and comments posted by members of two specific websites: Combate and Tatame. It has the time frame period between hiring women for the UFC, which runs from December 2012 until the last fight of the season in December 2013. The “Map Empirical” was composed of 331 stories and 4174 comments, surveyed on these sites was systematized through Content Analysis and emerged as categories of analysis: the biologicist discourse - that values the representations male / female, man / woman, masculine / feminine based on body anatomical features legitimizing arbitrary attitudes in the production of gendered bodies through social practices; and heteronormativity, understood as the process of normative practices that regulate and dictate a supposed truth about sex and gender to connect the terms sex, gender and desire, building a "matrix of intelligibility." Under the MMA, we found that the arguments of users in relation to the change in the order of "normality" and "naturalness" as the enhancement of the bodies, virilization and masculinization of athletes, cross categories of analysis. Therefore, the analysis visualized how women's access to MMA is permeated by restrictions. Largely relate to the presence of his body, a standardized representation of femininity and heteronormativity. The comments on most posts analyzed include sexist and misogynistic arguments that at the same time eroticize sports performance of the fighters and also disqualify them. Otherwise, there are a number of publications and transphobic lesbophobic character that insist on representing the fighters from the centrality of their bodies which are considered abject and that their presence in the octagon tarnish this sport. These arguments delegitimize recognition of differences, the multiplicities and equity opportunities in this sport.

Male homosexuality in Brazilian cinema of the 1960s and 1970s

Hodgson, James Neil January 2013 (has links)
The representation of homosexuality in the Brazilian cinema of the 1960s and 1970s is generally dismissed as homophobic on the grounds that it confirms stereotypical and oppressive views of homosexual men. While it is true that many films produced during the era repeat conventional notions of sexual identity, this dismissal arguably overlooks a variety of subtle and subversive representations of homosexuality. To contest the prevailing view, eleven films have been selected from important movements of Brazilian cinema of the period; these include examples of avant-garde and popular filmmaking. An analytical approach informed by queer theory – a critical account of homosexuality and sexual identity – is used to make a series of close readings of narrative form and content. It is suggested that the apparent heterosexism of many of the films is shown to be tacitly or accidentally subverted via the implication that sexual identity is unstable and contested. A number of films are shown to illustrate ways in which oppressive hierarchies might be disabled through a reconfiguring of homosexual identity. It is argued that film form – the films’ self-referential or reflexive aspects, as well as the way in which the films construct spectating positions – is the central factor in subverting conventional views of homosexuality. Such form facilitates multiple readings of the content, therefore enabling a queer interpretation to be posited. Ultimately, it is argued that the value of these films lies in the sometimes contradictory fashion in which they present oppressive notions of homosexuality on-screen while at the same time gesturing towards ways in which such oppression could be challenged.

Using Research Driven Design to Reimagine Systems of Gender in Final Fantasy XIV

Bunyea, Leo Ryan 18 May 2020 (has links)
This study explores gender modeling specifically in avatar creation tools through the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. The design of systems is often limited by the experiences of those who build them. In the video game industry; this means that systems are often designed by white, cisgender, heterosexual men. This demographic does not represent the wealth of people who play games and are subjected to these systems. The needs of marginalized communities, especially queer communities, in terms of affordances and representation tend to be overlooked or forgotten. This issue is apparent in avatar creation tools which define the types of bodies and identities that are allowable in the world of the game. Using Brenda Laurel’s research driven design tactics, modifications to Final Fantasy XIV’s current system were realized through a paper prototype and constant input from a group of self-identifying queer players. Both the feedback from these queer players and the modifications made to the prototype were condensed into a series of suggestions for the creators of these tools. Ultimately, I discovered that there are three key features which vastly improve the affordances of character creators for queer players; the inclusion of pronoun identification, the identification of gender identity, and the separation of both of these options from the character’s physical appearance. Designers who implement these findings in their work will contribute to creating environments that support queer identities.
