Key Successful Factors For R&D In Functional Matrix Organization

Huang, Kun-Min 25 July 2001 (has links)
ABSTRACT In terms of theory, the matrix organization is not only beneficial to preserve and develop the core technologies of enterprise, is but also equipped with flexible functions. This is an ideal research and development organization. Though there are many relevant studies in this respect previously with project or balanced matrix organization as research target, yet many companies adopt the functional matrix organization. Besides the research alliance is formed among enterprises in jointly developing new product/new technique which operational model will be the same as management model of functional matrix organization. As a result this initiates the research motive. This research adopts the exploratory research of case analysis including the compilation and study of relevant literatures as well as case interview, analysis and comparison, finally concludes ¡§The Key Successful Factors of Research & Development Management in the Functional Matrix Organization¡¨. The following conclusions are obtained by this research: An enterprise implements the project research and development of functional matrix organization and must be equipped with the following conditions: 1. The high ranking supervisors support and manifest toward project: the supervisor should clearly manifest the project importance, authorize and support the project leader as well as request the coordination of functional departments. 2. Sufficient Resource: It includes the required professional personnel, technology, budget and time to complete the project, meanwhile the flexibility for counteraction has to be prepared. 3. Appropriate Project Leader: The leader has to be equipped with professional capability, trust from supervisor, especially communication ability and leadership to acquire the coordination of functional chief and project members. 4. Attractive and Definite Object: The project object has to satisfy the sense of achievement of project members, inspire their motives, while the definite object can avoid the unnecessary problems in the results valuation. This article also submits the following suggestions on project execution method: 1. To adopt management by object: When the management by object is adopted. the functional chief supervises his subordinates to complete the preset project and project leader is focused on completed quality, schedule and required budget of object in the project execution period. As such the conflict occurrence can be reduced. Besides project leader doesn¡¦t have to spend too much time on internal management; however the leader can generate more close interactivity with customers that is surely beneficial to achieve the object and performance. 2. Effective Project Information System: The effective project information system can provide the written data to realize the project progress, assure project quality, increase the project realization of project members as well as compile and provide the effective historical data. 3. To Build up Project Team: If project members can work together under project object and develop a project team culture with more awareness and less conflict, this surely facilitates the smooth implementation of project. As a result the project leader does not have to be formally authorized his commanding power from organization, still he is able to inspire its members to proactively work hard in attaining the object. 4. The project leader has the rights of evaluation and allocation: The project leader should be more aware of contributions from his members than other chiefs. If project leader has the performance reward allocation that will facilitate the members be fully dedicated to project implementation. In the project management of matrix organization, the functional department is responsible for sub-project work as well as responsibility of project performance. Therefore project leader should have the performance evaluation toward overall functional department.

AN OPEN INNOVATION APPROACH TO THE RADICAL INNOVATION PROCESS : An Analysis of the Management of the Process of Radical Innovation in an Open Innovation Paradigm

Altmann, Peter, Kämpe, Oskar January 2010 (has links)
This thesis amends some existing theoretical gaps and an overall lack of empirical studies regarding the ways R&D managers can use Open Innovation during the management of the radical innovation processes’ early development phase.Using existing theories, an interview guide and an analytical model was created. These were later used during the gathering and analysis of empirical data. Our sampling involves three of Sweden’s largest companies, representing three distinct industry fields. Interviews took place during April 2010, and all the interviewees were R&D managers with previous experience with Open Innovation and radical innovation. The results reveal that the managers do use Open Innovation when managing radical innovation, and point to both benefits and issues brought about by using Open Innovation during this process. The use of Open Innovation during the management of radical innovation can be divided into two main aspects; the actual extent to which it is used, and the ways the managers use it. Our results reveal that the extent varies from an early peak, an in between Open Innovation chasm and a final increase. Furthermore, our studies also show that the main ways the managers use OI are; exploitation and creation of revenue streams, knowledge leveraging and integration, and finally to create superior products using broad knowledge networks.

When Innovation Is Not Enough : Managerial Challenges of Technology Change in Pharmaceutical R&D

Freilich, Jonatan January 2015 (has links)
Innovation is not always enough. In the beginning of the 2000s established pharmaceutical firms had developed several drugs, yet these new products were far too few. Patents of many blockbuster drugs were to soon expire and substantial profit would then be lost. A potential solution emerged: implementing new biomarker technologies in drug development. Biomarkers are required for knowledge creation about the drug effect on underlying causes of a disease. The problem is this: although academia, industry, and policy makers have deemed biomarkers as necessary for successful drug development, pharmaceutical firms have not used them in actual drug development projects. Since the 1990s, established pharmaceutical firms have invested financially and restructured organizationally in order to implement biomarkers. Still, cases show that more than 50% of project termination in Clinical Phase 2 (the bottle neck of drug development) can be attributed to the lack of implementing biomarkers. Challenges of established firms transforming in the face of technology change is a commonly studied phenomenon within innovation management literature. Several explanations have attempted to determine why established firms fail in following technology change. However, most of this literature has been based upon an empirical context where technology change is conceptualized as an innovation of the dominant product design in the industry. Consequently, the challenge is to develop or adapt a discontinuous product innovation. Conversely, implementing biomarkers is a case of technology change that impacts R&D. Since drugs lose their value when the patent protection expires, the established pharmaceutical firms need to continuously develop new block buster drugs – not just one product. More research is needed to fill this gap in the literature in order to develop an understanding of the established firm challenge in implementing biomarkers. This thesis builds upon a longitudinal case study of AstraZeneca. Using multiple data sources, the findings show that the dominant architecture of the drug development process during the 2000s impeded the implementation of biomarkers. AstraZeneca required an “architectural process innovation” in order to complete this implementation. The company’s process-based management structures distorted it from recognizing the need for process change. This thesis has three contributions: First, it describes the process change and the firm’s managerial challenges associated with biomarker implementation; Second, it contributes to the literature on the established firm challenge by developing an understanding of the phenomenon of architectural process innovation; Third, it develops a process-based framework for studying technology change that affects R&D. /
QC 20151106

Will the Kodak Decline Reappear in the Automotive Industry? : An investigation of how incumbent automobile manufacturers can manage the ongoing transition towards electric vehicles / Kommer The Kodak-Decline att återuppstå inom bilindustrin?

Hajiakbar, Abtin, Tokhmpash Norouzi, Dian January 2021 (has links)
Today, the automotive industry is facing a transition from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles due to demand changes and sustainability concerns. As a result, new actors have entered the automobile market and gained market shares in the EV sector. Further, this entails that pressure is put on the incumbents in terms of implementing new solutions of e-mobility. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to provide managerial recommendations concerning how the incumbents can manage the transition and at the same time stay competitive in the market. Moreover, as this transition is ongoing, the authors aim to contribute within the theoretical field of incumbent’s transition to EVs. In order to achieve this purpose, the authors have conducted a multiple embedded qualitative case study with an explorative approach, where four incumbents have been investigated and two researchers in the field have been interviewed. The research questions, results & analysis and discussion have been divided into three parts: Strategic Management, Transition Management and R&D Management. In terms of the first sub-research question, the incumbents must restructure its managerial levels, decision making processes and communication. Moreover, the incumbents should emphasize innovation and collaboration. Regarding the second sub-research question, the incumbents should identify niches in the supply chain, further developing expert systems and extend collaborations with authorities. In addition, the second-hand value of the EV and strategies of HRM should be considered. In terms of the last and third sub-research question, the incumbents should develop competence within batteries through collaborations with suppliers. Furthermore, investments should be made in collaborative R&D projects regarding recycling and waste processes, battery solutions and emerging technologies such as AI and3D printing.

Análise do processo de cooperação tecnólogica universidade-empresa: um estudo exploratório / Analysis of the university-enterprise technological cooperation process: an exploratory study

Segatto-Mendes, Andrea Paula 20 September 1996 (has links)
“Analysis of the university-enterprise technological cooperation peocess: an Exploratory study" is a study showing that there has been a university-enterprise cooperation in Brazil, especially in science and technology, from an academic point of view. In order to show this, exploratory research has been carried out involving three major universities in this area as well as three enterprises that have done some joint research together with them. To develop the analysis, a basic conceptual model has been designed which adopts a division of the cooperation process in four parts: motivation, constraints and/or facilitators, the cooperation process itself and the resulting satisfaction. By carrying out such a study it was possible to visualize how the process, as a whole or depending on its parts, has been established. The results of this study have allowed to detect, as central motivators to the universities, the performance of their social role, the acquisition of practical knowledge and the addition of new information to the teaching and researching processes; to the enterprises, such motivators have been detected as the access to highly qualified human resources and the solution to technical problems. It has also been found the existence of intermediate agents and organizations in the cooperation process, which has got formal and informal personal relationships as well as agreements with a definite target as its main operational tools. Furthermore, this study highligths government research funds as the main existing facilitator in the university-enterprise cooperation process and the university geographical location, the bureaucracy of such institutions as well as the lengthiness of the project as the most remarkable constraints. Finally, it points out that the process has generated satisfaction among participants, which is reflected by the desire of the institutions to continue carrying out cooperative research. Based on the results of this study, a model to understand the cooperation between universities and enterprises at Brazilian universities has been developed, in which one can notice the factors linked to motivation, constraints, facilitators, the process itself and the resulting satisfaction. To conclude, the study indicates some measures to improve the process such as reduction of university bureaucracy, promulgation of university image and potential, an improvement on the relations between universities and enterprises, and a simpler process to get government research funds.

The Policy Evaluation Structure for Government Subsidies on Small and Medium Enterprises Innovation Program

Lee, Feng-wu 08 September 2010 (has links)
Government support for applied Research and Development (R&D) persisted in the US despite evidence to the contrary. Many provide government R&D funding for enterprises of particular interest and a number of countries have substantially increased their expenditure on R&D. SBIR as a means of funding high-risk R&D with broad commercial and societal benefits that would not be undertaken by a single company, either because the risk was too high or because a large enough share of the benefits of success would not accrue to the company for it to make the investment. Therefore, the program¡¦s goal is to the development and application of new, enabling technologies that individual firms would not or pursue on their own and thereby encourage the economic growth that comes from the commercialization and use of new technologies in the private sector. However, very few studies of R&D policy toward innovative subsidy program in developing country. Public programs to subsidize high-technology firms have represented a significant but little-studied area of public expenditures. This article assesses the long-run success of firms participating in the SBIR program in Taiwan. The plan of this research is as follows. The purpose of this search in Taiwan is to study the impact of government-industry R&D programs on private R&D. The research has 3 important aspects. First, using a questionnaire to understand the enterprises intention and behavior which have participated in the ¡§Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)¡¨ this paper first examines whether government R&D subsidies influence firm¡¦s innovative activities. Second, this paper examines what the correlation is between government funding and private R&D expenditures. Finally, this research conducted 67 important interviews from enterprises. Not only the multi-methodology comparisons, the empirical results aimed at: 1) Examine the role of public/private partnerships (PP/Ps) as an instrument to leverage public investment in strategy technology and innovation and to achieve other goals of technology and innovation policy; 2) Identify the critical factors determining the success of R&D subsidy program for innovation, with an emphasis on programme design, financial arrangement, and evaluation 3) Government R&D subsidies have a significant positive effect or not on firm¡¦s R&D expenditure / employment / firm-financed R&D spending.

Essays in the Law and Economics of the Firm

Venturini, Roberto 22 August 2016 (has links)
Firms are central to the functioning of the economy. Ever since Smith (1838) and Coase (1937), economists have gone a long way trying to understand why firms exist, how they are organized, and how they interact through the market. This thesis contributes to the study of how regulation and market incentives can affect firm decisions and their organization.

Guedes, Luis Fernando Ascenção 12 April 2012 (has links)
Investments in Research and Development have constituted an important source of competitive advantage, especially with the deepening of globalization of markets and its consequences. The sum of investments that the 27 member countries of the European Community did in 2007 exceeded EUR227 billion, while in the same year U.S. had invested $368 billion in R&D. UNESCO and OECD data show an increase in overall investment in R&D from $525 billion in 1996 to more than $1 trillion in 2006. Given the scenario of increasing business impact of Research and Development and the movement towards its decentralization towards the subsidiaries of multinational company, arises the need for global coordination and synergic use of resources in order to make investment and management of R&D more effective. This effectiveness lies on the basis of competitiveness, as it can facilitate the organization\'s flexibility to cope with market dynamics, can help save resources and maximize return on investments in infrastructure and training of the workforce. This research focuses on the issue of global R&D coordination in a multinational company that has geographically dispersed R&D centers. The scope encompasses issues related to coordination mechanisms implementation, the relationship between R&D internationalization and coordination mechanisms, to what extent information technologies and communications can help the company in the mission to coordinate and integrate efforts of all its R&D facilities. Finally, it is identified critical issues for the global R&D coordination, through the discussion of coordination facilitators.

One of the difficulties that have arisen is in developing research projects with different professors in a multidisciplinary environment. Many authors have written about the importance project management skills, techniques and practices in research centers, but few show their applications and impacts. An action research was conducted to verify and select the root causes related to the challenges of project management in an international research center (Center for Research, Technology and Education in Vitreous Materials) through the Current Reality Tree. One of the main root causes found was about the lack of knowledge in project management methodology to elaborating multidisciplinary projects involving the transformation of a technology studied in an innovative product. Therefore, workshops were held to apply the Technology Roadmapping (TRM) and the product vision in a project that develops and intends to transform an innovative technology into a product. In addition, the Kanban approach was introduced for planning its main activities. The results from these applications of action research as well as the researchers' perception are discussed in detail.
