To Hold as T'were the Mirror Up to Hate: Terrence McNally's Response to the Christian Right in Corpus Christi

Sisson, Richard Kimberly 06 August 2007 (has links)
In 1998, the Manhattan Theatre Club’s staging of Terrence McNally’s play Corpus Christi ignited protest and virulent condemnation from various religious and politically conservative groups which eventually led to the cancellation of the play’s production. This led to a barrage of criticism from the national theatre, gay, and civil rights communities and free speech advocates, including the ACLU and PEN, which issued a press releases about the cancellation that decried censorship and acquiescence by the theatre to neo-conservative religiously political groups. As swiftly as the cancellation, the Manhattan Theatre Club reversed its decision and the show resumed its rehearsal schedule. Although the critical reception of the play was mostly negative, the political controversy surrounding its production testifies to the fact that a contemporary play in America dealing with both religious and gay themes is still economically risky, radical politically, and worthy of critical rhetorical analysis. This work aims to fill that gap by providing an in-depth investigation of the tangled rhetorical history of Corpus Christi. First providing an account of the controversy surrounding the 1998 production of Corpus Christi, this work then gives a historical and cultural analysis of McNally’s career and corpus of work leading up to the play’s contentious staging. Second, a full account of the play’s critical reception is given through a close analysis of the rhetorical responses to the work from the Christian Right and the more secular community that supported the play’s production. Third, the American Christian Right’s vitriolic rhetorical response to the play is indicted as homophobic hate speech. Fourth, how McNally’s play repudiates the rhetorical violence perpetrated by the Right against gays is revealed. Finally, the last two chapters examine how the rhetoric of the play speaks directly to its queer audience. Chapter five reveals the rhetorical and meta-theatrical conversion strategies employed by McNally in Corpus Christi to proselytize his expansive message of Christ to his gay audience. Ending the work, chapter six examines McNally’s rhetorical reclamation of the Christ figure from the Right as a means of sacralizing homosexuality as a religious identity and homosexual love and sex as a spiritual act.

Prairie of mine(s): engaging with the remnants of extractive processes

Baxter, Shannon D. 15 September 2008 (has links)
Prairie of Mine(s) explores the incorporation of cultural and historical elements within the reclamation of a post-industrial mining landscape in the South Saskatchewan prairie. Reclamation solely by ecological methods often fails to recognize the industrial processes and people that altered the landscape. This project utilizes experiential, cultural, and historical elements within the reclamation of mining lands to shed light on a part of our history that is frequently overlooked and draw attention to actions made on the earth everyday in order for us to live comfortably. / October 2008

Calibration Of A Grate On Sloping Channel

Sipahi, Sabri Ozgur 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In this study a setup is designed and constructed in the Hydromechanics Laboratory of Middle East Technical University in order to observe the flow through grate inlets under different flow and geometry conditions. The rate of interception of flow is determined over a rectangular channel through preliminary experiments run on the tilting flume. The performance of the new set setup has been examined and grate efficiency is obtained both in terms of longitudinal slope and the Froude number. The results which are obtained show that the setup can be used to conduct experiments to obtain a general expression for grate efficiency.

Šilutės rajono melioruotų žemių ir melioracijos statinių būklė / Condition Of Reclaimed Lands And Reclamation Constructions In Šilutė District

Kondrotavičius, Mindaugas 15 June 2010 (has links)
Magistrantūros studijų baigiamajame darbe analizuojamas drenažo sistemų eksploatacijos efektyvumas. Darbą sudaro – įvadas, 5 skyriai, išvados ir rekomendacijos, naudotos literatūros sąrašas. Darbo apimtis – 56 puslapiai kompiuteriu spausdinto teksto, įskaitant 6 lenteles ir 37 paveikslus. Naudotos literatūros sąrašą sudaro – 34 šaltiniai. Nepriklausomybės metais, skiriant melioracijos darbams mažiau lėšų, melioracijos statinių būklė palaipsniui blogėjo. Pagal 2009 metų duomenis, Šilutės rajone nusausintų žemių iš viso yra 85113,90 ha, o nusausintas drenažu plotas sudaro 68352,30 ha, valstybei nuosavybės teise priklausančių melioruotų žemių ir melioracijos statinių balansinė vertė – 283902,773 tūkst. Lt. Žemės ūkio gamyba ir jos našumas tiesiogiai priklauso nuo melioracijos sistemų būklės, nes ji vyksta nusausintose žemėse, todėl būtina atsižvelgti į šio sektoriaus konkurencingumą rinkos sąlygomis bei Šilutės rajono ir bendrą Lietuvos žemės ūkio plėtrą, todėl tikslinga išanalizuoti melioruotų žemių inventorizacijos darbus ir nustatyti svarbiausius rodiklius, aktualius dabar ir ateityje naudojant melioruotą žemę ir melioracijos statinius. Šiai dienai esamų melioracijos statinių vidutinis amžiaus vidurkis siekia 35 metus. Žemės savininkai neturi lėšų tinkamai naudoti ir prižiūrėti melioracijos statinius, todėl jų techninė būklė sparčiai blogėja. Melioracijos statiniai teikia naudą žemdirbiams, kaimo gyventojams ir visai mūsų visuomenei. Nenorintis ar nepajėgiantis savo žemėje... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / In the final work of master studies, we analyze efficiency of operating of drainage systems. The work consists of introduction, 5 chapters, conclusions and recommendations, a list of references. This makes 56 pages of printed text, including 6 tables and 37 pictures. Thirty -four references have been used. During the years of independence, with less means being assigned for land reclamation works, the technical state of land reclamation structures gradually became worse. According to the data of 2009, the drained area of land in Šilutė district consists of 85113,90 hectares (ha), of which 68352,30 ha are drained by drainage systems. The balance value of reclaimed lands and reclamation constructions owned by the state is 283902,773 Lt. Production of agriculture and its fertility is directly influenced by the condition of reclamation systems because drained lands are where cultivation occurs. Therefore it‘s necessary to consider land reclamation for its effect on competitiveness in the market and development of agriculture in Šilutė region and Lithuania. Thus, it is useful to analyze inventory works of reclaimed lands and determine the most important indicators, which are actual now and for the future, while using reclaimed land and reclamation constructions. The average age of presently used reclamation constructions is up to 35 years. The owners of lands do not have enough money to use and maintain reclamation constructions properly, so their condition becomes worse very fast... [to full text]

Delandfill: Reclaiming Ontario's Closed Landfill Sites

Murphy, Andrea January 2013 (has links)
There are over one thousand closed ‘small’ landfills in Ontario, each with differing circumstances and potential problems. This project proposes a method of addressing such dormant sites in situ, based upon a case study in Hamilton. Of the four closed landfills within Hamilton city limits, three of them lie in the low lands of the Red Hill Creek Valley. Perched at the source of the Red Hill Creek, the Upper Ottawa Street Landfill introduces unspoken toxins into the ecosystem of the entire valley. As the storm water catchment for the escarpment watershed, the creek serves a critical role in the recreational green belt which divides Hamilton and Stoney Creek. The source of this creek must be celebrated, not fenced off from public access due to landfill hazards. This proposal investigates beyond material recovery, into the possibilities of resource, ecosystem, and community recovery. Landfill mining, material sorting, and power generation through incineration are employed to reduce landfill volume. As the landfill is consumed, a new landscape is constructed, providing improved flood-prevention at the creek and a sanitary lined landfill for those materials remaining on site. Creek, forest, and field habitats are restored on site without the threat of contamination from landfill contents. The public can safely view the landfill mining operations from an elevated walkway, having new experiences with every visit. As the boundaries of the closed landfill are stripped away, the source of the Red Hill Creek and the new recreational parkland are made publicly accessible. Using this design as a reference, the equipment and operations designed for this site can be developed into a province-wide proposal.
