An exploration of the relationship between unintegrated primitive reflexes and symptoms of anxiety in children between 10-13 years in the Western Cape Province of South Africa

Carter, Tamara-Lyn 02 1900 (has links)
Bibliography: leaves 149-178 / Anxiety Disorder is one of the most common disorders experienced by children and, if not managed, can extend into adulthood. Research has established a link between unintegrated primitive reflexes (UPR) and Learning Disorders. Learning Disorders are often co-morbid with symptoms of anxiety, however, the relationship between symptoms of anxiety and UPR have not been studied. This study aims to explore the relationship between the UPR and symptoms of anxiety in children between 10 – 13 years of age. No correlation was found between the total primitive reflex score and total symptoms of anxiety score; however, a significant relationship was found between symptoms of anxiety and the Moro, Plantar and Spinal Galant reflex. These UPR play an important role in balance. Research on balance dysfunction indicates a relationship with symptoms of anxiety. Prenatal maternal stress, common childhood illness and comorbidity with ADHD were also found to be factors in symptoms of anxiety in children. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Development of Cardiovascular Regulation in Embryos of the Domestic Fowl (Gallus Gallus), with a Partial Comparison to Embryos of the Desert Tortoise (Gopherus Agassizii)

Crossley, Dane Alan 08 1900 (has links)
In adult vertebrates, cardiovascular regulation is accomplished by numerous systems with neural, hormonal and local components responsible for the majority of regulation. These regulatory components work in concert to maintain the essential function of blood perfusion to adult tissues. Given the essential nature of this function it is therefore surprising that the development of cardiovascular regulation during gestation is poorly understood. The majority of what is known is based on a single vertebrate model, the fetal lamb. The fetal lamb has been used in multiple studies due to the clear clinical applications and has been pivotal in understanding the onset of regulation in developing vertebrates. However, study on the fetal lamb is limited to the latter 40% of gestation and has the added complication of an in-utero developmental strategy. Therefore the primary focus of this dissertation was to characterize basic cardiovascular regulation in the chicken embryo to provided the needed information for it's use an alternative to the fetal lamb. Developing chicken embryos rely on both alpha and beta adrenergic tones to maintain normal heart rate and arterial blood pressure during incubation. However, on day 21, just prior to hatch, these animals lose both tones on arterial pressure suggesting the onset of adult regulation. Cholinergic tone, however, was absent throughout chicken development indicating that it must mature during the neonatal life. Adult cardiovascular reflexes become apparent late in chicken development with a clear baroreflex specifically operating initially on day. However, an adult response to changes in ambient gas tension was absent during incubation suggesting embryos possess unique regulatory systems that are absent in adult chickens. This mechanism is comprised entirely of adrenergic systems with no cholinergic action during change in ambient gas tension. Similar developmental patterns were determined in embryos of the desert tortoise suggesting fundamental differences between in-utero and ex-utero developing vertebrates.

Možnosti ovlivnění vybraných oblastí psychomotorického vývoje dítěte pomocí Neuro-vývojové terapie / Possibilities of influencing selected areas of children psychomotor development by neuro-developmental therapy

Volemanová, Marja Annemiek January 2016 (has links)
The diploma thesis is focused on the concept of the psychomotor development in context of remaining primary reflexes in children. The author draws on the knowledge of developmental psychology and neurophysiology that some of developmentally earlier stages must under optimal circumstances and maturation of a child disappear and be replaced by ontogenetically newer forms. Research confirms continuity of persistent primary reflexes, psychomotor development and learning and behavioral problems. The thesis aims to investigate whether inhibition of primary reflexes using Neuro-developmental therapy improves the condition of children with delayed psychomotor development, including their school grades. The author in the introductory chapters focusses on normal psychomotor development of children, in particular gross motor skills, fine motor skills, sensory skills, including proprioception and kinesthesia and their importance for learning ability in school age. The next part of the thesis is focused on particular primary reflexes and their impact on psychomotor development. The author pays special attention to the climbing stage in infancy which she considers as an important milestone in the optimal psychomotor development. Case studies shows, that skipping any developmental stage can be considered as a...

Teknik med Nelli och Nalle : Teknik i vardagen med konkreta bygg- och konstruktionsuppdrag

Berglund, Maria January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this development work was to develop a teacher´s guide to assist in technology aimed at educators in preschool. It would give the kids an opportunity to create an interest in the technology. Teacher´s Guide is aimed at educators that works with children ages 3-6 and includes questions about the technology of every day life that can be aked of two softbears, Nelli and Nalle. From these questions then prepared an constuction and constuction tasks to each individual question. The Guide describes the way in which teahers can work with technology in every day life. The tutorial has been evalueted in four preschool theacher´s and got a very positive respons.

Etudes des effets du port d'orthèses plantaires à dominante biomécanique ou proprioceptive sur la régulation posturale et la stratégie neurale chez des patients souffrant d'aponévrosite plantaire ou de gonalgie / Study of effects of the wearing plantar orthoses based on biomechanical or proprioceptive principles on postural regulation and neural strategy in patients suffering from plantar fasciitis or knee pain

Moyne-Bressand, Sébastien 15 December 2017 (has links)
Knee pain and plantar fasciitis represent most of the reasons for consultation of a podiatrist. Patients with these pathologies experience knee or foot pain that can be disabling. Although the use of foot orthoses is an effective conservative treatment, its prescription is based on an empirical knowledge of its effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of foot orthoses based on biomechanical (modifying the posture) or proprioceptive (stimulating sensors of the plantar sole) principles on neural strategy changes in suffering patients and to determine the links with the decrease in perceived pain. For this, we performed a pain assessment, walking and stabilometric examination and electrophysiological recordings (reflexes measured at rest and during voluntary muscle contraction). The evolution of these different parameters was measured after three, six and nine weeks of wearing foot orthoses. The results obtained were compared with those obtained in control patients free from any pathology.Although the results of these studies are not as conclusive as we would have liked and many questions remain unresolved, this work has opened up to the podiatry a field of research until then little or not explored.

Fatková, Aneta January 2021 (has links)
Title: The Use of Therasuit method on individuals with cerebral palsy Objectives: The main objective of the work is to observe a 4-week rehabilitation program according to the Therasuit method. Determine whether there will be changes in the area of gross motor skills and primitive reflexes, and to describe the individual course of the rehabilitation process in individual probands. Another objective is an evaluation of the therapeutic effect on the child's physical activities from the parents point of view. Methods: It is a mixed research method which contains an empirical-theoretical form of case sudies of 3 probands. The study included 2 boys and 1 girl aged 3, 4 and 7 years with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy, while in the first proband it occurs in the form of spastic diparesis, in the second one in the form of spastic hemiparesis, and in the third one in the form of spastic triparesis. The data collection methods used include input and output kinesiological analysis, qualitative observation of the rehabilitation process and a qualitative interview with a legal representative focused on the child's physical activities prior to and after rehabilitation. Results: We found that after 4-week rehabilitation according to the Therasuit method, all 3 probands improved their gross motor skills. In all 3...
