Classes of Singular Nonlinear Eigenvalue Problems with Semipositone Structure

Kalappattil, Lakshmi Sankar 17 August 2013 (has links)
The investigation of positive steady states to reaction diffusion models in bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions has been of great interest since the 1960’s. We study reaction diffusion models where the reaction term is negative at the origin. In the literature, such problems are referred to as semipositone problems and have been studied for the last 30 years. In this dissertation, we extend the theory of semipositone problems to classes of singular semipositone problems where the reaction term has singularities at certain locations in the domain. In particular, we consider problems where the reaction term approaches negative infinity at these locations. We establish several existence results when the domain is a smooth bounded region or an exterior domain. Some uniqueness results are also obtained. Our existence results are achieved by the method of sub and super solutions, while our uniqueness results are proved by establishing a priori estimates and analyzing structural properties of the solution. We also extend many of our results to systems.

Analysis of Classes of Nonlinear Eigenvalue Problems on Exterior Domains

Butler, Dagny Grillis 15 August 2014 (has links)
In this dissertation, we establish new existence, multiplicity, and uniqueness results on positive radial solutions for classes of steady state reaction diffusion equations on the exterior of a ball. In particular, for the first time in the literature, this thesis focuses on the study of solutions that satisfy a general class of nonlinear boundary conditions on the interior boundary while they approach zero at infinity (far away from the interior boundary). Such nonlinear boundary conditions occur naturally in various applications including models in the study of combustion theory. We restrict our analysis to reactions terms that grow slower than a linear function for large arguments. However, we allow all types of behavior of the reaction terms at the origin (cases when it is positive, zero, as well as negative). New results are also added to ecological systems with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the interior boundary (this is the case when the boundary is cold). We establish our existence and multiplicity results by the method of sub and super solutions and our uniqueness results via deriving a priori estimates for solutions.

Assessing the implementation of a turnaround strategy in a water board / Mpheteng Patrick Mokubung

Mokubung, Mpheteng Patrick January 2014 (has links)
The research study focused on assessing implementation of the turnaround management strategies in a water board. The location of the study was a water board located in the economic heart of South Africa, Rand Water. The objectives of the study were; (a) to evaluate the turnaround plans implemented in the water sector, (b) to uncover success factors attained when undertaking turnaround plans, (c) to assess selected case studies dealing with the turnaround management strategies in selected industries, and lastly (e) to derive an understanding on determinants and factors that cut across the turnaround plans. The research approach that premised the study was quantitative methodology, which involved distribution of questionnaires as part of field work in the water board. The questionnaires were analysed through statistical approach, and further linked back to the problem statement posed to the research study. Some assumptions were utilized for conducting the research project, including the statistically acceptable sample. The area of focus in the water board was Strategic Asset Management Division which was selected because of its huge impact in the planning and execution of the capital projects. Infrastructure or capital projects form the core of the business sustainability; they ensure the future of the water as well as the region of the country. Various literatures were reviewed pertaining to the turnaround management strategies and certain inferences were made. The results provide interesting relationships between variables that can be explored further. There were certain biases that were obtained, and in certain cases there was no relationships between variables and in most cases there were positive relationships. The turnaround management strategies are extensively carried out across the industries. It can be concluded from the research study that there are certain phenomenona that can be derived from the turnaround plans. It can also be deduced that certain factors or determinants demonstrate a better behaviour than others when tested in the turnaround management environment. Models can be developed utilizing regression tools pertaining to the turnaround plans and adaptation of these models based on conditions or certain unique aspects is recommended to be done. / MBA, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Extended degrees : a Univen study

Kaburise, P. January 2011 (has links)
Published Articles / The four year extended degree (ED) with a foundation provision is one of the academic intervention tools available to underprepared students in higher education institutions (HEIs). University of Venda (Univen) introduced this form of assistance in 2007 to students enrolled in the Schools of Human Sciences, Management and Law (HML). The 15% completion rate for this first cohort is a cause for concern. This paper examines the implications of this result in terms of Univen's implementation of EDs. EDs can be variously applied dependent on the peculiar situation in an institution and it can be assumed that Univen chose the current format after due consideration of all factors. The poor throughput rate of these students, however indicate otherwise, motivating this investigation. An examination of the curricula for the various degrees indicates that Univen is implementing a blend of the various academic interventions without the necessary reconfiguration of teaching and learning and this might be the cause for the poor performance. The final sections of the paper contribute to the debates on topical issues related to academic literacy and support such as an extended high school period and a four year generic bachelor's degree.

Högskolans effekt på gymnasieelevers studieresultat : En kvantitativ undersökning om en högskolas effekt på gymnasieelevers betyg i olika socioekonomiska områdestyper

Hachem, Maéva January 2017 (has links)
A university has been shown to have a positive effect on society and has led to greater awareness of the social problems found in our towns today and a willingness to openly discuss and resolve them. Universities have a social and civic role that improves the social living conditions in the areas surrounding them. A university also improves the local economy by creating jobs and attracting new businesses which in turn lead to an improved infrastructure and a subsequent decrease in residence segregation. Residential segregation is a growing phenomenon in Sweden where students living in disadvantaged areas are less likely to succeed in school than students living in more advantaged areas, as is often shown by their school results. The purpose of this study is to analyze a university’s effects on high school student’s grades in different socioeconomic living areas in Sweden. Is there a correlation between the student’s grades in these areas and the presence of a university in the region? To analyze these effects, a multilevel regression model in two scales has been used. his thesis shows that a direct correlation exists between high school students’ grades and the presence of a university in the region. A university has a strong improving effect on the grades of students from highly resourceful areas. The study further illustrates that although a new university will lead to an improvement of the general standard of education of a region, the introduction of more universities does not result in an increase in the number of people with a university education.

Uma contribuição a mensuração do resultado econômico da decisão de investimento em qualidade em empresas de serviços contábeis: uma abordagem da gestão econômica. / Economic results of the investment decisions in quality of the accounting services companies.

Lyra, Ricardo Luiz Wüst Corrêa de 15 April 2003 (has links)
The theme of this work is “Economic Results of the Investment decisions in quality of the accounting services companies". It deals with the system of the accounting Services Company, characterizing these systems into a systemic vision, and the identification of the quality concept applied to this economic segment. Having the theory of economic management as a theoretical support, it searches for a formulation of decisions of the investment model that is applied, in quality, to such organizations. The quality in the companies of accounting services is, thereby, a result of, mainly, the positive perception of clients between a required and produced information in relation to relevancy, confiability and the utility for the process of patrimony control and of decision making. Understanding, therefore, that the quality of a service is linked to its capacity to satisfy requirements and that the economic result is the increase of liquid richness between two moments of time, the aim of this dissertation is to formulate a model of investment decision in quality for accounting services companies that show the impacts of such decisions in the economic value of the company. As being , the economic result, the best indicator of the organizational efficacy , and believing that the investments in quality justify themselves only with reference to the increase in of future organizations benefits, this work justifies itself for the least number of studies related to the quality of services and for the lack of work that link quality to the economic results.
