Several studies have been investigating how swimming may influence on biking and how biking may influence on running, but the results still controversial in some aspects. There are studies that pointed out the importance of swimming for the overall performance in the competition. As the shorter the competition, the bigger the correlation with the final result were found. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze how to swim 375 meters may influence biking and running and the overall outcome in a simulated competition of super sprint triathlon (375m swim, 10km cycle, run 2,5 Km). Eight amateur triathletes (27 ± 4 years, 75 ± 6 kg, 179 ± 7 cm), who signed the consent form which was approved by UNICAMP research and ethics committee with number 8999/2012. Three protocols of evaluation were performed: 1st Tri which consisted of swimming 375m, cycling 10km and running 2.5 km; in the 2nd CR the volunteer should cycle 10km and run 2.5 km and in the 3rd R and the last one, the volunteer had to run 2, 5km. All samples were randomized and they had a minimum of 48 hours rest. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Normality was tested by the Shapiro-Wilk. "t" paired test was used to compare the situations and the correlation of Pearson of one moment with other. In the first study, swimming reduced biking performance (-8.4%) and the total time (cycling + running; -5.4%) when compared to the performance of biking and running without the prior presence of swimming. All stages analyzed, with exception of running on BR had significant correlations with the total time of the competition. In the second study, there were significant differences in the variables, average power, maximum power and maximum average relative, and average and maximum speed between the Tri and BR protocols. Based on the results of this research, we concluded that to perform swimming first reduces cycling performance, but does not influence the performance of the run. Finally the total time of the competition was influenced by the pre-swim / Mestrado / Biodinamica do Movimento e Esporte / Mestre em Educação Física

Evaluating Donor-Funded ICT Projects : How Significant is Western-Centrism?

Necejauskaite, Zivile January 2021 (has links)
Donor-funded economic and development assistance for various countries and regions has been steadily increasing in the last half-century. According to the World Bank, the funding amount provided by this organisation has increased more than 40 times from 4.6 billion USD to 166 billion USD in a 58-year span (World Bank, 2018). The notion of development, which came to spotlight after the WWII, has been greatly debated with a lot of academics and theorists linking it to dependency and superiority of one over another. Since the beginning of the ICT revolution from around 1980s, technologies have become tools and enablers for new opportunities (Forester, 1987). However, with the great benefits, came significant risks, such as data and information misuse, data protection or cybersecurity. Still the ICT related development projects are often portrayed as silver bullets which can resolve matters such as inequality, access to education or poor living conditions. Funding organisations are putting digitalisation at the forefront of their agenda and communicate the change and positive impact they bring. However, the evaluation mechanisms used by those bodies raise the question of suitability as they are very much based on benchmarking against the Western standards of success or failure. This essay is aiming to investigate how significant is Western-centric worldview when it comes to measuring donor funded or co-funded ICT projects, be it in a form of a grant or a loan, as well as what role the terms impact and outcome play when communicating the results. It is also intending to analyse how the ICTs have been changing the notion of development and what conclusions can be drawn.

Numerical Simulation of Dendrites Growth in Continuous Casting by Using Open Source Software

Xiang Zhou (9189275) 03 August 2020 (has links)

Cracking in continuous casting has always been one of the main problems of steel mills. Many cracks that occur during solidification are difficult to observe from outside the industrial mold. In order to better understand the formation of this defect, compared with the large-scale simulation used in the entire industrial process, microsimulation is also essential. A comprehensive study of using phase field method to simulate microstructure evolution has been conducted. A variety of two-dimensional models based on phase-filed method has been developed in order to simulate dendrites growth in continuous casting process. The basic concepts of phase-field method are presented. Among those models, Kobayashi model was first introduced to describe the morphology of pure material solidification, in this article, which are pure water and pure iron. In order to get closer to the actual situation of continuous casting, a multi-component model was introduced to solve the problem. To go a step further, by introducing a series of temperature parameters and modifications to a series of terms, the binary alloy directional solidification model was used to simulate the process of dendrite growth in continuous casting. Furthermore, the detailed derivation of the binary alloy solidification model and how to apply the model in open source software will also be introduced in this article. The effects of physical parameters such as anisotropic strength, temperature gradient and cooling rate on the growth and evolution of the dendrite interface were quantitatively analyzed. Finally, potential improvement of this model, optimization to primary cooling section in continuous casting process and various applications of the simulation were discussed.

Construction and analysis of exponential time differencing methods for the robust simulation of ecological models

Farah, Gassan Ali Mohamed Osman January 2021 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / In this thesis, we consider some interesting mathematical models arising in ecology. Our focus is on the exploration of robust numerical solvers which are applicable to models arising in mathematical ecology. To begin with, we consider a simple but nonlinear second-order time-dependent partial differential equation, namely, the Allen-Cahn equation. We discuss the construction of a class of exponential time differencing methods to solve this particular problem. This is then followed by a discussion on the extension of this approach to solve a more difficult fourth-order time-dependent partial differential equation, namely, Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. This equation is nonlinear. Further applications include the extension of this approach to solve a complex predator-prey system which is a system of fourth-order time-dependent non-linear partial differential equations. For each of these differential equation models, we presented numerical simulation results. / 2025

Toward Independent Home Use of Brain-Computer Interfaces: A Decision Algorithm for Selection of Potential End-Users

Kübler, Andrea, Holz, Elisa Mira, Sellers, Eric W., Vaughan, Theresa M. 01 January 2015 (has links)
Noninvasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) use scalp-recorded electrical activity from the brain to control an application. Over the past 20 years, research demonstrating that BCIs can provide communication and control to individuals with severe motor impairment has increased almost exponentially. Although considerable effort has been dedicated to offline analysis for improving signal detection and translation, far less effort has been made to conduct online studies with target populations. Thus, there remains a great need for both long-term and translational BCI studies that include individuals with disabilities in their own homes. Completing these studies is the only sure means to answer questions about BCI utility and reliability. Here we suggest an algorithm for candidate selection for electroencephalographic (EEG)-based BCI home studies. This algorithm takes into account BCI end-users and their environment and should assist in study design and substantially improve subject retention rates, thereby improving the overall efficacy of BCI home studies. It is the result of a workshop at the Fifth International BCI Meeting that allowed us to leverage the expertise of multiple research laboratories and people from multiple backgrounds in BCI research.

Implementation of the Results Agenda: Unpacking the Role Public Servants Play in Institutional Work

Reggie, Jackson 30 August 2022 (has links)
Existing scholarship in public sector results-based management (RBM) mostly conceptualizes implementation as an isomorphic process. Researchers frequently look at implementation from a top-down driven approach which conjures images of public servants as automatons who merely sustain RBM practices due to institutional pressures on behaviour. To that effect, little is known around how agency dynamically intersects with institutions not only to maintain, but also to create and disrupt RBM institutions through implementation. Combining institutional pressures and institutional work as theoretical frameworks, this study deploys qualitative content analysis on institutional instruments such as archival materials, as well as semi-structured interviews with Chief Results and Delivery Officers (CRDOs), to identify the various institutional pressures acting on public servants, the different types of institutional work activities performed during implementation of the Results Agenda, and how such actions contribute to the creation, maintenance, and disruption of institutional RBM regime within Canadian public sector. The agency of public servants bears heavily on how CRDOs perceive, understand, and respond to implementation pressures from institutional Results Agenda. The study finds that Results Agenda implementation is not a straightforward, linear, and exclusively top-down political and administrative centre driven activity. CRDOs overwhelmingly perform nuanced and overt actions that at times support, build on, and confront institutional Results Agenda imposed by the centres. This unique and evolving dynamic between institutions and agency intentionally and unintentionally reproduces, maintains, and alters institutional Results Agenda features within Canadian federal public sector. Given the importance of RBM systems in Canada’s federal public organisations, the insights from this study can shed light on how public servants implement institutional RBM and create, maintain, and disrupt centre driven institutional RBM through agency. Finally, this dissertation advances the methodological utility of integrating institutional work for combined empirical and interpretive social action research on institutional RBM implementation.

Work family conflict and its job consequences: From attitudes to behaviors to the bottom-line

Kim, BeomCheol Peter 01 October 2010 (has links)
This study examines the relationships of work family conflict with job related consequences. Although past studies related work family conflict to different types of job outcomes, little is known regarding its impact on more distal organizationally important outcomes and causal mechanisms through which these effects occur. Based on both quantitative and qualitative literature reviews, mediation hypotheses were developed to test whether proximal outcomes which were commonly used in past studies mediate the relationships of work family conflict with distal consequences including ratings of job performance and organizationally meaningful performance outcomes. Data were collected from 220 customer service workers, matched to 29 managers in 31 hotel food service outlets. In particular, this study used three sources of information such as employee and supervisor surveys and system-generated archival indexes for data analysis. The results of multiple regression analysis (Baron & Kenny, 1986) revealed that job satisfaction and organizational commitment mediate the relationship of work family conflict with only one work outcome—self-reported contextual performance. However, job satisfaction and organizational commitment failed to mediate the relationship between work family conflict and other distal outcomes (e.g., results-organizational indexes). Further, work family conflict was related to one of distal outcomes, check size. The significance of work family conflict's influence on job related consequences and the utility of proximal outcome variables are discussed. Implications for both research and practice are provided along with future directions for research on work family conflict in the hospitality literature. / Ph. D.
