Narrative Processes in Urban Planning: A Case Study of Swamp Gravy in Colquitt, Georgia

Pate, Ronald David 01 January 2012 (has links)
In 1990 many in Colquitt, Georgia considered themselves to be a dying town due to the loss of jobs and outmigration that occurred when labor intensive farming transitioned to the machine. In response citizens brought in a theater director from Chicago who helped them launch a performance series of inclusive stories that were acted by local volunteers. The resulting series called Swamp Gravy has run from 1992 to present (2012), and has led to purported claims of community revitalization. The purpose of this study was to discover what this ongoing narrative community engagement meant to the people of Colquitt in regards to: community experiences that produced new relationships (including those between Blacks and Whites); personal empowerment; the coproduction of an emerging and diverse community identity; and institutional and economic development. Methods for this case study included narrative interviews of participants, attendees and local citizens, as well as observation of the town and the performances, and document analysis. Many participant volunteers and attendees became Swamp Gravy enthusiasts, and describe their experiences as coming out into a meaningful experience of community, which included forming relationships with diverse others (including those of a different race). The enthusiasts speak of growing into larger community responsibilities with others for the common good, and feel that ongoing and inclusive storytelling is very important to coproducing a diverse heritage that informs the future of their city. Other attendees (predominantly the business community) describe the benefits of Swamp Gravy as instrumental to having given the town recognition (identity) as an entertaining tourist attraction that exposed individual talent, boosted individual confidence, and enhanced social connectivity. Others in Colquitt were indifferent or resistive to the coming out that the performances invite. Most everyone recognizes that Swamp Gravy has attracted outside tourists which has boosted economic development, occasioned the renovation of downtown Colquitt square and the formation of institutions to continue to attract and accommodate visitors from afar. This case is theorized in terms of the emerging communicative turn in planning that juxtaposes the planner as mediator or facilitator, and stakeholders as co-producers. The findings in this case study support that the Swamp Gravy form of narrative process has some potential for guiding stakeholders to a just diversity in cities, neighborhoods and towns, and as such should be studied further. Urban planning in situations of urban renewal may be one place where utilizing this form of meaningful engagement could lead to discovery of new identities, which may both inform and motivate a just plan to be coproduced.

Salvation from empire : the roots of Anishinabe Christianity in Upper Canada

Murton Stoehr, Catherine 18 July 2008 (has links)
This thesis examine the cultural interaction between Anishinabe people, who lived in what is now southern Ontario, and the Loyalists, Euroamerican settlers who moved north from the United States during and after the American Revolution. Starting with an analysis of Anishinabe cultural history before the settlement era the thesis argues that Anishinabe spirituality was not traditionalist. Rather it inclined its practitioners to search for new knowledge. Further, Anishinabe ethics in this period were determined corporately based on the immediate needs and expectations of individual communities. As such, Anishinabe ethics were quite separate from Anishinabe spiritual teachings. Between 1760 and 1815, the Anishinabe living north of the Great Lakes participated in pan-Native resistance movements to the south. The spiritual leaders of these movements, sometimes called nativists, taught that tradition was an important religious virtue and that cultural integration was dangerous and often immoral. These nativist teachings entered the northern Anishinabe cultural matrix and lived alongside earlier hierarchies of virtue that identified integration and change as virtues. When Loyalist Methodists presented their teachings to the Anishinabeg in the early nineteenth century their words filtered through both sets of teachings and found purchase in the minds of many influential leaders. Such leaders quickly convinced members of their communities to take up the Methodist practices and move to agricultural villages. For a few brief years in the 1830s these villages achieved financial success and the Anishinabe Methodist leaders achieved real social status in both Anishinabe and Euroamerican colonial society. By examining the first generation of Anishinabe Methodists who practiced between 1823 and 1840, I argue that many Anishinabe people adopted Christianity as new wisdom suitable for refitting their existing cultural traditions to a changed cultural environment. Chiefs such as Peter Jones (Kahkewahquonaby), and their followers, found that Methodist teachings cohered with major tenets of their own traditions, and also promoted bimadziwin, or health and long life, for their communities. Finally, many Anishinabe people believed that the basic moral injunctions of their own tradition compelled them to adopt Methodism because of its potential to promote bimadziwin. / Thesis (Ph.D, History) -- Queen's University, 2008-07-17 13:59:23.833

Taking the Irish Pulse: A Revitalization Study of the Irish Language

Roloff, Donna Cheryl 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis argues that Irish can and should be revitalized. Conducted as an observational study, this thesis focuses on interviews with 72 participants during the summer of 2013. All participants live in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. This thesis investigates what has caused the Irish language to lose power and prestige over the centuries, and which Irish language revitalization efforts have been successful. Findings show that although, all-Irish schools have had a substantial growth rate since 1972, when the schools were founded, the majority of Irish students still get their education through English-medium schools. This study concludes that Irish will survive and grow in the numbers of fluent Irish speakers; however, the government will need to further support the growth of the all-Irish schools. In conclusion, the Irish communities must take control of the promotion of the Irish language, and intergenerational transmission must take place between parents and their children.

In the spatial ambit on which the present work focuses is a central area in João Pessoa. However, it is important to emphasize that references to other sectors of the city will be made, which have become in the last decades new places of the centrality process. The temporal picture, for its turn, follows the transformations that occurred from 1970 to present days, because since those times deep transformations were generated by post-modern paradigms. In fact it is a phase of changes in the intraurban structure of our cities, where selective shopping activities and new way of life emerged under the influences of privileged social classes anxiety in the context of consumerist society. The methodology used here included not only the bibliographical survey performed, whose importance is revealed by the theoretical basis constructed in the present work, but also the analysis of the phenomenon of changes in the centrality, where data and indicators were provided by the Laboratório do Ambiente Urbano e Edificado (Laboratory of Urban and Built Structures Environment) of the Federal University of Paraíba. The main town centre of João Pessoa sprawled predominantly towards the littoral zone along the Avenida Epitácio Pessoa and its surroundings, following the moving tendencies of high profit people. The results obtained here showed that the main town centre of João Pessoa has deteriorated physically with respect to many buildings, and the estate housing dynamics have decreased in relation to new town centres in the city of João Pessoa. However, under the point of view of commercial activities and services available, besides other vital activities for the living process in the area, the traditional town centre of João Pessoa continues to generate profits for the local economy, having the greatest number of licensed activities and a quite expressive amount of money in circulation. Thus, the vitality and urban centrality of João Pessoa town centre, reflected by the great diversity of activities of socio-economical interest is presently clearly evident.

Environmental perceptions, legibility of local cultural references and their representation through the design of urban elements, act in a positive or negative manner over the inhabitants cognition process of some particular revitalized area, determining new use and attributions to those areas. Designs for coastal urban interventions try excessively to standardize technical media, construction materials and planning configurations, creating artificial sceneries that segregates users, imposing new structures and usage, generating, consequently, the so called non-places and burlesque regionalism. Capacidade de suporte da serapilheira da caatinga na recuperaÃÃo de solos degradados no semiÃrido / Carrying capacity of the caatinga litter in the recovery of degraded soils in semiarid

Eveline Viana Salgado 17 January 2014 (has links)
The development of exploratory techniques that respect the limitations edaphoclimatic through managements conservation of natural soil-water-plant is now the object of study in different fields of knowledge. The objective of this investigation was to define a model of recovery of degraded areas in the Brazilian semiarid region by the use of litter produced by the Caatinga biome, but also assess changes in attributes biological, chemical and physical soil occurred in the soil occurred in the areas of removal and disposal of litter. Besides investigating the dynamics of rainfall in the production and decomposition rate of litter in the Caatinga biome. This study was conducted in the municipality of General Sampaio, CearÃ, Brazil. Comprised of two experimental areas, near and distinct, area 1-PRNP Elias Andrade and area 2-degraded soil. Treatments were defined by percentage of soil cover with litter, which are: 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% coverage, which corresponds to 0, 17, 34, 50, 67 and 83kg, respectively, in plots of 25 m2. In each study area applied six treatments with four replications, with random block design with split plots (area 1) and random block design with split plots (area 2), the soil layers 0-5, 5-10 and 5-20cm. We evaluated the annual litter production corresponding to the years 2009/2010, as well as the spatial and temporal dynamics of some soil attributes: biological attributes (RBS, CBM and qCO2), chemical (Ca, Mg, Na, K, MO, P) and physical (bulk density, moisture content, porosity, macropores and micropores) in disturbed and undisturbed samples (composite). Observed in this investigation that productivity monthly litter in semiarid regions is inversely correlated with rainfall. As well, the study time was considered short when referring to the evolutionary process of the soil properties. What we could see some treds were attributes related directly to edaphoclimatic factors

Brněnské brownfieldy u řeky Svitavy / Brno brownfields by the Svitava river

Macháček, Tomáš January 2018 (has links)
The theme of the diploma thesis „Brno brownfields by the Svitava River“ Is design of contemporary city structure in Brno Husovice. The theisis deals with the analysis of the current situation, definition of problems and opportunities in the location and the design, based on these researches. Studied area is located on the riverbank of the Svitava River and is defined by Provazníkova, Dukelská třída and Svitavské nábřeží streets. In these days there are mostly located brownfields of the previous industry parks, storage spaces and development of family houses. The design puts emphasis on the gentle merge with the urban structure of the old Husovice and focuses on using modern architectonic and urban approaches as well, for example on multifunctionality of buildings. The riverbank is revitalised and attractive features are designed here, like the footbridges conneting both river sides and sittable stairs. These designs provide space for leisure time and a water control during the floods as well. The traffic solution is concerned on the design of the new Nová Dukelská street, connecting formerly Zbrojovka industry park and Provazníkova street.
