Internationalization challenges of the SMEs: : a case study of Three Bangladesh Ready-madegarment companies

Rahman, Aminur, Ahmed, Md. Eamin January 2022 (has links)
Ready-made garment (RMG) industry is the biggest and most importantindustry of Bangladesh with the highest overall export earnings and foreigncurrency earnings in the country. And international market is the biggestexporting destination for Bangladesh RMG industry. However, the overallcondition of this sector does not look well recently. Research suggests thathundreds of garment factories have been shut down during the past few yearsdue to not coping up with the different challenges of internationalization, although the overall export earnings remain relatively unchanged. Therefore, the authors conducted this research to identify and present in-depthknowledge about the major challenges that Bangladesh RMG industry arefacing while internationalizing and operating in foreign markets in recentyears, as the author believes these challenges could be the possible reasonsthat forcing RMG SMEs to shut down their operations. This research aims to identify the internationalization challenges forBangladesh RMG companies in international markets. Suchinternationalization challenges focusing on international markets have notbeen studied much previously and thus have created a knowledge gap. Therefore, this study addresses such a knowledge gap by answering thefollowing research question: What is the process of Internationalization of Bangladesh RMGcompanies? What are the internationalization challenges faced by the BangladeshRMG companies? How do the RMG companies manage the challenges they face?Empirical data was gathered by interviewing respondents from three RMGcompanies in Bangladesh and through secondary data sources. The findingsof this study show that Bangladesh RMG companies internationalize rapidlywithin a couple of years from inception. The study also identified somemajor internationalization challenges such as competition, major industrialaccidents, Infrastruture, etc. Moreover, network relastionships are found tobe essential in Bangladesh RMG companies‘ internationalization. Theauthors then analyzed the findings by applying previous literature and theirown created conceptual framework. Furthermore, this research providestheoretical and managerial implications on this essential topic. Evaluation of Crack Depth Meter - An investigation of the crack depth meters possibilities and limitations for commonly occurring damage mechanisms / Utvärdering av Sprickdjupsmätare - En undersökning av sprickdjupsmätarnas möjligheter och begränsningar för vanligt förekommande skademekanismer

Norberg, Alfred January 2023 (has links)
In this master thesis, the accuracy of the crack depth meter RMG 4015 was evaluated for different types of cracks with various damage mechanisms. In total, 61 crack depth measurements were conducted with the crack depth meter on 56 cracks which were located in the 23 different test pieces supplied by Kiwa. The measured crack depths were then compared to the true crack depths, which were determined by cutting the test pieces and measuring directly on the cross-sections of the cracks using a light optical microscope. The results of the comparison showed that the RMG 4015, which uses potential drop techniques, was very accurate at measuring both strain induced and alkaline stress corrosion cracks. However, the results also showed that the crack depth meter underestimates chloride induced stress corrosion cracks, corrosion fatigue cracks and stress corrosion cracks/hydrogen embrittlement cracks at varying degrees. Therefore, the main recommendation for Kiwa is to switch the RMG 4015 to a crack depth meter that uses ultrasonic techniques instead. The master thesis also explored the possibilities to improve an FE model produced by Kiwa in a previous project which involved an analysis of a cracked component. The present crack depth measure program included a test piece from this component. The stress distribution in the original model did not represent the cracks found in the real structure and it was suspected to be the result of some boundary conditions not corresponding to those acting in the actual pipe system. Some adjustments to the boundary conditions and contact regions were made and a new improved model with a better representing stress distribution was found.

Can Corporate Social Responsibility be used as a Marketing Tool by the Readymade Garment Suppliers in Bangladesh?

Salma, Umme January 2016 (has links)
Aim: The aim of this research is to investigate whether CSR can be used as a marketing tool by the readymade garment suppliers in Bangladesh to attract international buyers. Method: This study is conducted by applying qualitative method. The data has been collected through semi-structured interview and using secondary data.   Result and Conclusions: The study reflects that that CSR implementation generates various benefits such as, creates good corporate image, reputation and opportunity for innovation and offers competitive advantage.  As international buyers’ foremost requirement is to verify suppliers’ social compliance, the CSR practices and benefits act as marketing instrument by the garments suppliers to attract international buyers and grab more business. Suggestions for future research: This study considered multiple large (1st tier) garments suppliers and multinational buying organization which calls for further research such as, a comparative study on taking both large and small scale suppliers as well as more international buyers. One of the findings indicates that buyers’ support is important in CSR implementation which can also be considered for further investigation. Contribution of the thesis: This study investigates suppliers’ CSR practices from the marketing perspective in relation to buyers in business to business context which has not been considered in previous literature. Further CSR as marketing tool has not been addressed in developing country context while this study includes empirical study on garment suppliers of Bangladesh. This study suggests that managers need to be aware of the significant role of CSR as marketing tool while designing and implementing CSR programs effectively to increase business. Moreover, CSR activities benefit both the company as well as other stakeholders (customer, employee, public, shareholder, government) of the society by way of meeting those stakeholders’ interest.

The Impact of International Buyer-Supplier Relationships on Sustainability Practices in the Ready-Made Garments Industry: A Case Study of Bangladesh

Haque, Farhana, Jahan, Fariha Ishrat, Sabnam, Jesmin January 2023 (has links)
In this research, we explore the impact of international buyer-supplier relationships on sustainability practices in the Ready-Made Garments (RMG) industry, concentrating specifically on the context of Bangladesh. The root of this investigation centers around unpacking the influence of global business interconnectivity on operational approaches at the supplier juncture, with a specific emphasis on sustainability. Two core research queries were set as the guiding posts for this investigation: (1) What is the impact of international buyer-supplier relationships on sustainable practices in the RMG sector of Bangladesh? and (2) How do different types of buyer-supplier relationships influence this impact? Drawing from the theoretical discourse, the study ventured to hypothesize those certain elements of international buyer-supplier relationships - the relational dynamics, enduring alliances, and the commitment of international buyers to sustainability - have a positive bearing on sustainable practices within the Bangladeshi RMG industry. To provide empirical support to these assumptions, a quantitative study involving 66 managers working within Bangladesh's RMG industry was undertaken. Utilizing covariance-based descriptive statistics as our analytical tool, we proceeded to examine the validity of our hypotheses. The findings provided a resounding confirmation, highlighting that attributes like trust, commitment, open communication, and long-term partnerships favorably influence the incorporation of sustainable practices. Moreover, it was observed that the commitment of international buyers to sustainability, demonstrated through the enforcement of standards and initiatives to support suppliers, has a substantial influence on suppliers' operational strategies, elbowing them towards the adoption of sustainable and ethical business practices. These insights shed light on how international buyer-supplier relationships impact global trading dynamics and underscore the intensifying significance of sustainability in modern business ethics. This research extends the theoretical discourse on international business, supply chain management, and sustainability. Additionally, it offers pragmatic insights for managers operating within Bangladesh's RMG industry, accentuating the necessity to cultivate enduring, trust- centric relationships with international buyers and to align their operational strategies with the global shift towards sustainable business practices.

Ethical Human Resource Management and Employee Welfare: Empirical Perspectives from the Bangladeshi RMG Sector

Faysal, Niaz M. January 2021 (has links)
This study explores employee welfare and working conditions in relation to ethical HRM practices from the employees’ perspective in the Bangladeshi Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector. This research is inspired by the need to understand the challenges that employees face in their practical work settings and the unfair Human Resource Management (HRM) process that they experience in their work. The interpretivist philosophical approach and the qualitative research approach have been adopted in this research study, while the semi-structured interview method has been applied for primary-data collection. A total of 25 semi-structured interviews with General Employees, Informal Representative Leaders, Employees, Middle and Senior Managers have been undertaken in this process. Five focus-group discussions have also been applied to corroborate the data generated from the 25 semi-structured interviews. The case-study strategy has also been implemented as a research strategy and thematic analysis has been applied to the data-analysis process. The findings of this research study show the need for deeper understanding and application of ethical HRM practices in particular national and sectoral contexts, specifically in the Bangladeshi RMG sector. These ethical HRM practices include, but are not limited to, the initiation of rights-based understanding and respect-based perception, the inclusion of welfare facilities, the implementation of a fair payment policy, the equitable recruitment and selection policy, and the initiation and equality of training and development facilities. These new ethical understandings contribute to the field of ethical HRM in the context of the development of employee welfare and decent working conditions in this sector.

Underlines that, the cities assume the role of command of the organization of geographical area and urban, especially those cities. The disorderly growth of Brazilian cities, especially metropolitan regions is the result of a lack of urban planning, the huge socio-economic inequality between social classes. Currently, the metropolitan regions face various problems such as housing deficit, urban public transport, education, health and violence, even Goiânia, a city planned escape this reality. The metropolitan regions thus becoming areas of social tension, or even the creation and deployment of metropolitan areas by the Federal Government and state governments then passed to the imposition of same, was not able to resolve these problems. In the case of the creation of the Metropolitan Region of Goiânia - RMG, according to the interviewees was the worsening quality of life of their residents, resulting from increased housing deficit, the inefficiency of public transport to meet increasing demand and violence. Among the solutions given by respondents to resolve or alleviate the problems of RMG out the urban planning and management shared.
