Contributions expérimentales originales en chambres réverbérantes à brassage de modes et en cavités surdimensionnées / Original experimental contributions in reverberation chambers and in oversized cavities

Soltane, Ayoub 17 December 2018 (has links)
The reverberation chamber (RC) is an oversized closed metal cavity, equipped with a mode-stirrer. The mode stirring makes the electromagnetic field homogeneous and isotropic inside the RC (in its useful volume). This thesis illustrates firstly a new method for evaluating the performance of a mode-stirrer (via the Doppler spectrum). Then, it presents a new method for measuring the radar cross section (RCS) of a canonical object using the time-gating technique. Finally, it presents a new method for measuring the antenna radiation pattern in an oversized cavity via the time-gating technique.

Bybi, Abdelmajid 06 December 2012 (has links)
Whether in medicine or in non-destructive testing, ultrasonic imaging systems have become increasingly used nowadays. Their applications continue to expand and good performances are needed to improve the quality of the diagnosis. Moreover, significant progress has been made since these systems were originally based on single element ultrasonic transducers and are now made of mono-dimensional (1D) and bi-dimensional (2D) elements arrays ever more numerous and smaller. However, an undesirable phenomenon is strongly present in the ultrasonic transducer arrays: it is the cross-talk, which limits their acoustic performances and modifies their radiation pattern. Throughout this research, we have attempted on one hand to understand this parasitic phenomenon and on the other hand to provide solutions in order to reduce it or even remove it. To highlight the cross-talk types (acoustic and mechanical) and to test the proposed correction methods, we developed two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) finite element modeling and fabricated some prototypes. Both correction methods rely on the application of suitable voltages to the array elements. The first method uses the average of the normal displacements at the surface of each element to evaluate the voltages, while the second one utilizes the motional currents through each element to determine them. The numerical and experimental results concerning the displacements and the radiation patterns are in good agreement. In addition to this, both methods have been efficiently performed to reduce the cross-talk.

Improving Operational Performance Of Antennas On Complex Platforms By Arranging Their Placements

Bayseferogullari, Can 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to improve the operational performance of the communication antennas mounted on complex platforms such as aircrafts and warships by arranging placements of these antennas. Towards this aim, primarily, in order to gain insight on the influence of geometrically simple structures composing the platform on antenna performance, a quarter wavelength monopole antenna placed at the center of a finite square ground plane is studied by using uniform Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD). Besides, the change of far field radiation pattern and complex diffraction functions due to the variation of the width of a square ground plane is examined. Secondly, electromagnetic analysis of two Ultra High Frequency (UHF) antennas mounted on geometrically simple structures composing simplified F-4 aircraft is carried out by using transient solver of Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Microwave Studio&reg / (MWS), in order to conceive the influence of each structure on antenna performance. Then, electromagnetic analysis of these antennas mounted on simplified and original F-4 aircrafts is performed, in order to determine the optimal location of the lower UHF antenna (newly installed antenna) for the operational performance of this antenna to be optimum in terms of electromagnetic coupling and far field radiation pattern. Finally, electromagnetic analysis of the communication antennas mounted on a warship is performed by using transient solver of CST MWS&reg / , in order to determine the optimal locations of these antennas for the operational performance of these antennas to be optimum in terms of electromagnetic coupling and far field radiation pattern.

Design and modelling of passive UHF RFID tags for energy efficient liquid level detection applications : a study of various techniques in the design, modelling, optimisation and deployment of RFID reader and passive UHF RFID tags to achieve effective performance for liquid sensing applications

Atojoko, Achimugu A. January 2016 (has links)
Sewer and oil pipeline spillage issues have become major causes of pollution in urban and rural areas usually caused by blockages in the water storage and drainage system, and oil spillage of underground oil pipelines. An effective way of avoiding this problem will be by deploying some mechanism to monitor these installations at each point in time and reporting unusual liquid activity to the relevant authorities for prompt action to avoid a flooding or spillage occurrence. This research work presents a low cost energy efficient liquid level monitoring technique using Radio Frequency Identification Technology. Passive UHF RFID tags have been designed, modelled and optimized. A simple rectangular tag, the P-shaped tag and S-shaped tag with UHF band frequency of operation (850-950 MHz) has been designed and modelled. Detailed parametric analysis of the rectangular tag is made and the optimised design results analysed and presented in HFSS and Matlab. The optimised rectangular tag designs are then deployed as level sensors in a gully pot. Identical tags were deployed to detect 4 distinct levels in alternate positions and a few inches in seperation distance within the gully pot height (Low, Mid, High and Ultra high). The radiation characteristic of tag sensors in deployment as modelled on HFSS is observed to show consistent performance with application requirements. An in-manhole chamber antenna for an underground communication system is analysed, designed, deployed and measured. The antenna covers dual-band impedance bandwidths (i.e. 824 to 960 MHz, and 1710 to 2170 MHz). The results show that the antenna prototype exhibits sufficient impedance bandwidth, suitable radiation characteristics, and adequate gains for the required underground wireless sensor applications. Finally, a Linearly Shifted Quadrifilar Helical Antenna (LSQHA) designed using Genetic Algorithm optimisation technique for adoption as an RFID reader antenna is proposed and investigated. The new antenna confirms coverage of the RFID bandwidth 860-960 MHz with acceptable power gain of 13.1 dBi.

Etude d'un banc de caractérisation d'antennes intégrées miniatures aux fréquences millimétriques / Development of a test setup for miniature antennas for millimeter frequencies

Fu, Yan 18 July 2012 (has links)
On propose trois méthodes d’alimentation. / In this thesis, we designed and built a new 3D test bench, particularly for low-directivity integrated antennas at millimeter-wave frequencies. We proposed three feeding techniques for the antenna under test (AUT): a probe-fed technique, a flexible-transmission-line-fed technique and a radar-cross-section (RCS) method. The probe-fed method was developed with a customized probe, which involves an elongated (50 mm) coaxial line between the probe tip and the probe body, wherein the probe body is reversed (relative to the conventional measurement configuration) so it lies below the plane of the AUT. This method reduces the range of angles that are masked from 80° (for a conventional probe setup) to 20°. The second method was developed using a flexible transmission line with a modified flip-chip connection to the AUT. This method completely eliminates the masked zone. The third method characterizes the radiation pattern using a radar cross-section (RCS) method. This method requires neither a probe system nor connectors. However the simulation results demonstrate that there is insufficient variation in the ratio of received power to incident power as the load on the AUT is varied in order to make precise measurement with conventional measurement equipment.

Utvärdering av individuella skillnader hos mikrovågssensorer / Evaluation of individual differences in microwave sensors

Svensson, Andreas, Jangren, William January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate if individual differences exists between microwave sensors from the same manufacturer and to find which variables of the microwave sensors that can be the reason for those individual differences. To investigate this, an experiment environment was made to gather data from microwave sensors in a repetitive way. This experiment environment was used in three different experiments where individual differences, radiation pattern and noise were measured. As a base for the experiments a literature review was made to find variables that could affect the individual differences. The study shows that individual differences on signal strength can be found on microwave sensors of the type MDU2000 from Microwave solutions. Also, the radiation pattern at higher angles can differentiate. The frequency from the microwave sensors at lower speeds shows no significant difference individually. This study contributes to increased knowledge about individual differences on microwave sensors of the type MDU2000. Results from this study can be used as a recommendation to suitable applications. As both resources and time have been limited during this thesis, the study was limited to only perform tests on microwave sensors of the type doppler radar. Another limit to the study is to only do tests at lower speeds i.e. a maximum speed of 5km/h.

Design and Implementation of the SAX, a Robotic Measurement System for On-Chip Antennas at 140-325 GHz

Pontusson, Magnus January 2018 (has links)
There is currently a demand of mm‑wave on‑chip antennas to enable all kinds of new applications in several different areas. But the development requires, among other things, special equipment used during the measurement phase due to the small dimensions and the high frequencies. In this project a robotic measurement system, SAX (Single Arm eXtra), was designed and constructed at Micro and Nanosystems (MST) department at KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden). The purpose of the SAX is to enable radiation pattern measurements of on‑chip antennas ( 140 GHz to 325 GHz ), whether the boresight is vertical or horizontal along with other requirements, by moving a converter with the measurement antenna around the antenna in question. Several alternative designs for the basic construction, both from other works and invented by the author, were analyzed based on the requirements for this project and other limitations. The chosen unique design, the SAX, is very compact and uses only one stepper motor. Several parts have been developed in this project to ensure the proper functionality of the SAX. That includes a main operator program, a motor input signal generating program, a motor input signal executing system, a security system, and a system for controlled rotation of the SAX. For the input signal to the motor two different algorithms to generate the time delays were developed and tested. They were adapted to make the motor manage the sweeps of an ever‑changing load with high inertia during acceleration and deceleration. One of them was developed to make the time delay array generation much more efficient albeit with larger approximation error. The SAX worked well and should be rather easy‑to‑use regarding the operation of the system, from the physical maneuvering to utilizing the sub‑systems to the running of the main operator program. It fulfilled the specific requirements by enable a cross pattern measurement from  -60° to +60°  both from above and from the side, adjustment of the radius between 15cm to 45cm , adjustment 10cm in height, to be rotated along the floor in steps of 1°, measurement steps of 1° with an accuracy of less than 0,5° (the largest error was measured to be ≤ 0,461°). However, some calibration work needs to be done before the optimal performance of the system is reached. As a verification of the operation of the system data from measurements of open‑ended waveguides was presented.

Analysis and solutions for RFID tag and RFID reader deployment in wireless communications applications. Simulation and measurement of linear and circular polarised RFID tag and reader antennas and analysing the tags radiation efficiency when operated close to the human body.

Al Khambashi, Majid S. January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this study is to analysis, investigate and find out the solutions for the problems associated with the implementations of antennas RFID Reader and Tag for various applications. In particular, the efficiency of the RFID reader antenna and the detection range of the RFID tag antenna, subject to a small and compact antenna¿s design configuration have been studied. The present work has been addressed directly to reduce the cost, size and increase the detection range and communication reliability of the RFID framework antennas. Furthermore, the modelling concept of RFID passive tags mounted on various materials including the novel design of RFID reader antenna using Genetic Algorithm (GA) are considered and discussed to maintain reliable and efficient antenna radiation performances. The main benefit of applying GA is to provide fast, accurate and reliable solutions of antenna¿s structure. Therefore, the GA has been successfully employed to design examples: meander-line, two linear cross elements and compact Helical- Spiral antennas. In addition, a hybrid method to model the human body interaction with RFID tag antenna operating at 900MHz has been studied. The near field distribution and the radiation pattern together with the statistical distribution of the radiation efficiency and the absorbed power in terms of cumulative distribution functions for different orientation and location of RFID¿s tag antenna on the human body have been demonstrated. Several tag antennas wi th symmetrical and unsymmetrical structure configurations operating in the European UHF band 850-950 MHz have been fabricated and tested. . The measured and simulated results have been found to be in a good agreement with reasonable impedance matching to the typical input impedance of an RFID integrated circuit chip and nominal power gain and radiation patterns.
