Formation and break up of microscale liquid jets

Hunter, Hanif 12 January 2009 (has links)
The evolution of column instabilities that lead to break up of a microscale liquid jet is studied experimentally using shadowgraph technique. The jet formation is investigated over a range of Reynolds number, Pressure Ratio, and Ohnesorge number which are varied by the driving pressure, observation chamber pressure, and the jet liquid. Over the range of these parameters, the jet experiences different break up mechanisms as a result of different dominant instabilities. The present investigation discusses both break up mechanisms that are similar to the break up of macroscale jets and some new microscale break up phenomena.

Self-organization in thin metal films under laser irradiation / Plonų metalų sluoksnių savitvarkos lazerio spinduliuotės poveikyje tyrimas ir modeliavimas

Gedvilas, Mindaugas 22 November 2011 (has links)
The aim of this PhD thesis is to find out mechanisms of the ripple initiation and formation in the chromium thin film on the glass substrate. To learn to control the ripple formation and to apply it for fabrication of diffraction gratings. In this thesis, the experimental and theoretical results of new self-organization effect of the metal thin film on the glass substrate under irradiation with a sequence of partially overlapping laser pulses are presented. The method for formation of the regular ripples and results on investigation of diffractive properties of the self-organized gratings is presented. Different types of metals are used in experiments in order to understand the reasons of regular structure formation in chromium film. A diverse behavior of the films under laser irradiation is observed depending on the metal when burst of partially overlapping pulses was applied. Experimental data is compared with simulations based on different physical phenomena in order to develop and confirm a model of ripple formation in thin chromium film under its irradiation with pulses of a nanosecond laser. The Plateau-Rayleigh instability of the cylindrical ridge formation during laser ablation appears to be the most probable process responsible for initiation of the ripple formation. The Marangoni convection of the molten metal from hot areas to cold is the stabilizing process of steady ripple formation.

A eletrização da superfície inferior durante o processo corona abre possibilidades para aplicações onde seja desejável ter um filme eletrizado, porém sem modificar as características originais da superfície / Abstract: In this thesis, we investigated charging process and the mechanism of charge build-up in water droplets and polyethylene films as well. We evaluated the effect of electrical charges on some properties of these materials. Charging of water drops was done using two different methods by: contacting an electrified metal or exposing water to the electrostatic potential created through air by a noncontacting biased electrode. In both cases, water drops acquire net electric charge and its value exceeds the Rayleigh limit in a few tens. It was verified that the presence of charges in water droplets leads to reduced surface tension and increased spontaneous its area, but there was no change in density. Recognition of these facts should contribute to further understanding of various electrostatic phenomena taking place in the presence of liquid or adsorbed water. Top and bottom surfaces of polyethylene (PE) films exposed to corona discharge display large and opposite electrostatic potentials, forming an electric bilayer. However, water wetting, chemical composition and roughness of the two surfaces are quite different. While the top surface is modified by corona treatment, the bottom surface is charged but remains unchanged after treatment. These results show that poling the surface closer to the corona electrode triggers another but different charge build-up process at the opposite surface. Charging of the bottom surface during corona opens possibilities for applications where it is desirable to have a polymer film charged, but without modifying the original characteristics of the surface / Doutorado / Físico-Química / Doutora em Ciências

Destabilisation and Failure of Cylindrical Nanopores : A Phase Field Study

Joshi, Chaitanya January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Phase field models have played an important role in shaping our understanding of a variety of micro structural phenomena in materials. Their attractive features include (a) their ability to capture instabilities in microstructures, and (b) their ability to handle topological transitions { such as splitting or coalescence { gracefully. Therefore, we have chosen to use a phase field model in our study of instabilities in cylindrical pores in nanoporous membranes which eventually lead to their failure. Our study is motivated by recent studies on thermal stability of nanoporous membranes of alumina, titania and zirconia. The key feature in our model is its ability to incorporate surface discussion as the mechanism for mass transport. We first benchmark the model through a critical comparison of our results on early stages of surface evolution during Rayleigh instability and grain boundary grooving with those from linear theories of these phenomena. We have then used longer simulations (which go beyond early stages, and therefore, can incorporate non-lineare effects) to study instabilities in a hollow cylinder in three different systems: single crystal or amorphous solid (which fails through Rayleigh instability), a model sys-tem with parallel grain boundaries (which fails through grain boundary grooving), and a polycrystal (whose failure depends on a combination of grain growth and grooving). In all the cases, the surface energy is assumed to be isotropic, and the operative mechanism for mass transport is assumed to be surface discussion.

Multimaterial Fibers And Tapers A Platform For Nonlinear Photonics And Nanotechnology

Shabahang, Soroush 01 January 2014 (has links)
The development of optical sources and components suitable for the mid-infrared is crucial for applications in this spectral range to reach the maturity level of their counterparts in the visible and near-infrared spectral regimes. The recent commercialization of quantum cascade lasers is leading to further interest in this spectral range. Wideband mid-infrared coherent sources, such as supercontinuum generation, have yet to be fully developed. A mid-infrared supercontinuum source would allow for unique applications in spectroscopy and sensing. Over the last decade, it has been shown that high-index confinement in highly nonlinear fibers pumped with high-peak-power pulses is an excellent approach to supercontinuum generation in the visible and near-infrared. Nonlinear waveguides such as fibers offer an obvious advantage in increasing the nonlinear interaction length maintained with a small cross section. In addition, fiber systems do not require optical alignment and are mechanically stable and robust with respect to the environmental changes. These properties have made fiber systems unique in applications where they are implemented in a harsh and unstable environment. In extending this approach into the mid-infrared, I have used chalcogenide glass fibers. Chalcogenide glasses have several attractive features for this application: they have high refractive indices for high optical-confinement, have a wide transparency window in the mid-infrared, and have a few orders-of-magnitude higher nonlinearity than silica glass and other mid-IR glasses. Producing chalcogenide glass fiber tapers offer, furthermore, the possibility of dispersion control and stronger field confinement and hence higher nonlinearity, desired for supercontinuum generation.

Erzeugung und Untersuchung von schnellen Mikrotropfen für Reinigungsanwendungen / Generation and investigation of fast micro drops with respect to cleaning applications

Frommhold, Philipp Erhard 20 May 2015 (has links)

Baigl, Damien 11 September 2003 (has links) (PDF)
