General Weighted Optimality of Designed Experiments

Stallings, Jonathan W. 22 April 2014 (has links)
Design problems involve finding optimal plans that minimize cost and maximize information about the effects of changing experimental variables on some response. Information is typically measured through statistically meaningful functions, or criteria, of a design's corresponding information matrix. The most common criteria implicitly assume equal interest in all effects and certain forms of information matrices tend to optimize them. However, these criteria can be poor assessments of a design when there is unequal interest in the experimental effects. Morgan and Wang (2010) addressed this potential pitfall by developing a concise weighting system based on quadratic forms of a diagonal matrix W that allows a researcher to specify relative importance of information for any effects. They were then able to generate a broad class of weighted optimality criteria that evaluate a design's ability to maximize the weighted information, ultimately targeting those designs that efficiently estimate effects assigned larger weight. This dissertation considers a much broader class of potential weighting systems, and hence weighted criteria, by allowing W to be any symmetric, positive definite matrix. Assuming the response and experimental effects may be expressed as a general linear model, we provide a survey of the standard approach to optimal designs based on real-valued, convex functions of information matrices. Motivated by this approach, we introduce fundamental definitions and preliminary results underlying the theory of general weighted optimality. A class of weight matrices is established that allows an experimenter to directly assign weights to a set of estimable functions and we show how optimality of transformed models may be placed under a weighted optimality context. Straightforward modifications to SAS PROC OPTEX are shown to provide an algorithmic search procedure for weighted optimal designs, including A-optimal incomplete block designs. Finally, a general theory is given for design optimization when only a subset of all estimable functions is assumed to be in the model. We use this to develop a weighted criterion to search for A-optimal completely randomized designs for baseline factorial effects assuming all high-order interactions are negligible. / Ph. D.

Coherent structures and reduced models for the flow past a cylinder within the two-dimensional periodic regime.

Barbeiro, Iago de Carvalho 06 March 2012 (has links)
This thesis concerns the flow past a cylinder just after its first bifurcation, within its two-dimensional periodic regime. The approach is mainly theoretical, goes through experiments and is concluded by an important numerical part which complements the theory with evidences and illustrations. The main contributions are the analysis concerning the modal composition of the solution within the periodic regime and a method to identify eigenvectors of some linearizaton of the Navier-Stokes equation participating on a given solution. The bases spanned by the identified eigenvectors are employed in the projection of the Navier-Stokes equation and are central to the reduced models of this study. The numerical results for Re = 60 present two iterations of the process, with two bases of dimensions 12 e 24. The reduced models are numerically stable and their integration is many orders less costly than that of the full simulation. The time series of the modal coordinates and the eigenvectors bases allow the recomposition of the flow and its comparison with the full simulation results. The convergence analysis was based on the time averages, the Strouhal number values and the harmonic structure. Both reduced models have close correspondence with the asymptotic behavior of the flow and the convergent trend of the iterations is clear. The space and time symmetries of the harmonics have a simple representation within the structure of the models, therefore the identified bases can be understood as sets of coherent structures of the phenomenon.

Modelling tools for quieter vehicles : Waves in poro-and visco-elastic continua / Outils de modélisation pour les véhicules silencieux : ondes dans les milieux continus poro- et viscoélastiques

Östberg, Martin 07 June 2012 (has links)
New modelling tools intended to contribute to the development of components for quieter vehicles are developed. The tools are based on continuum models for wave propagation in poro– and visco–elastic media. By using geometric attributes of the studied components, the computational cost may be radically decreased compared to traditional methods. By assigning known analytical functions for one or two of the spatial directions, the spatial dimension of the remaining numerical problem is reduced. This reduction of spatial dimensions is performed in two di↵erent ways. The first one treats wave propagation in infinitely extended homogeneous and hollowed cylindrical rods, or wave guides, consisting of visco–elastic media. The wave solutions obtained are then used to model rubber vibration isolators of finite length by mode–matching the fields to the radial boundary conditions of interest. The second one is a method for modelling rotationally symmetric multilayered structures consisting of poro–elastic, elastic and fluid domains. By using a harmonic expansion for the azimuthal spatial dependence, the original three–dimensional problem is split up into several, much smaller, two– dimensional ones, radically decreasing the computational load. Moreover, using a mixed measurement/modelling approach, the audible frequency range characteristics of a viscous damper from a truck is studied, illustrating the influence of the rubber bushings by which it is attached to surrounding structures. The modelling approaches presented in this thesis are intended as tools aiding the design process of new vehicles, enabling new technology striving for more sustainable vehicle concepts. More specifically, the tools aim to improve the modelling of sound and vibration properties which are often penalised when seeking new, more sustainable vehicle designs.

In many cases, these structures are model by numerical approximations methods because, due to its complexity, the analytical model does not exist or is not feasible. The finite element method is a numerical approximation methods most used. Thus, the model generated by the finite element method is in most cases considerably too large, and the time taken to perform computer simulations is high. In this context, models reduction methods, it has been studied to meet the need of accurate results while maintaining the dynamic properties of the structure with less processing time. A comparative study of three reduction methods will be presented, the Improved Reduced System (IRS) and the Iterative Improved Reduced System method (IIRS). The third reduction method, it is an enrichment of the IRS method proposed by the author, which provided great improvement in time savings during simulations. This method was called Improved Reduced System Enriched (IRSE). Reduced models and numerical methods for kinetic equations applied to photon transport / Modèles réduits et méthodes numériques pour des équations cinétiques appliquées au transport des photons

Leroy, Thomas 05 January 2016 (has links)
The modeling of inertial confinement experiments involves kinetic equations whose discretization can become very costly. The research of reduced models allows to decrease the size and the complexity of these systems. The mathematical justification of such reduced models becomes an important issue. In this work we study several reduced models for the transfer equation in several contexts, from the theoretical and numerical point of view. In particular we study the relativistic transfer equation in the non-equilibrium diffusion regime, and we prove the convergence of the solution of this equation to the solution of a drift diffusion equation, in which the Doppler effects are modeled by a frequency transport term. This transport equation is discretized by a new class of well-balanced schemes, and we show that these schemes are consistant as the wave velocity tends to zero, by opposition to the Greenberg-Leroux type schemes. We also study several original reduced models for the Compton scattering (inelastic electron-photon collision). A hierarchy of nonlinear kinetic equations generalizing the Kompaneets equation for anisotropic distributions are derived and their properties are studied. The M_1 and P_1 angular moments models are derived from one of these equations, and we show that the anisotropic part of a radiation beam can modify the Bose condensation phenomena observed by caflisch and Levermore. This work ends with the reports of two side projects. The first one is a technical proof of the uniform convergence of the Gosse-Toscani scheme on unstructured meshes. This scheme is asymptotic preserving, since it preserves at the discrete level the diffusion limit of the hyperbolic heat equation, and this proof on unstructured meshes in 2D is original. The second one is devoted to the derivation of a kinetic model for the electron-ion Bremsstrahlung that preserves the thermal limit.

Modèles et méthodes numériques pour les études conceptuelles d’aéronefs à voilure tournante / Models and numerical methods for conceptual studies of rotorcrafts

Tremolet, Arnault 22 October 2013 (has links)
On the one hand the diversity of rotorcraft concepts is very rich, on the other hand the extent of their applications is very wide. Then a key question is raising: What is the most suitable concept facing a number of missions and specifications ? For answering, models and methods are required for predicting and evaluating the flight performances and environmental impact of rotorcraft. The project «Concepts of Rotorcraft Enhanced Assessment Through Integrated Optimization Network» (C.R.E.A.T.I.O.N.) aims at developing a multi-disciplinary and multi-level modelling calculation chain. The multi-disciplinary feature comes from the involvement of different disciplines in rotorcraft design. The multi modelling levels are defined to allow the evaluation of any rotorcraft concept whatever the level of details available in the description data. The present thesis is part of this project. First steps are the implementation of statistical models able to initialize the rotorcraft presizing from some specifications, the development of an analytical code that evaluates flight performances and its integration into the multidisciplinary calculation chain. A preliminary design conception chain using multidisciplinary optimization is setup and applied to a practical case showing its efficiency as presizing methodology. For this purpose multi-objectives exploration algorithms and decision aid methods to select a best compromise solution are also studied. The exploration of databases and creating response surface models are other themes explored in this thesis.
