Church planning in the South African Indian Community, with reference to the Reformed Church in Africa

De Beer, P.J.P. (Petrus Johannes Perold) 24 November 2010 (has links)
The spice route around the Cape of Good Hope established links between the refreshment station in the Cape and India. This foreshadowed the official involvement between South Africa and India. By 1700 up to 50% of the slaves in the Cape were of Indian descent. As early as the 17th century, the DRC had been involved in outreach work to the Muslim community in the Cape. It took a considerable length of time after the Indians had settled in Natal in 1860, however, before the DRC became involved in this new field. It was only in 1946 that the church officially began mission work among the Indian people and more specifically the Hindus. A number of factors however hampered the outreach work, such as political antipathy, the English language, fear of economic competition, the foreign culture, and their religion. The Mission Boards of the DRC, in time, acquired not only the necessary funds, but also the manpower for the task. In the sixties they commenced to work in Natal, as well as in the Cape and Transvaal. A number of important issues landed on the desk of the Mission Board, such as membership of ministers, the form of baptism, the period of catechism for older believers, aspects of organizational questions regarding the formation of a new church, the training of evangelists and ministers, and a church order for the newly established church. The first missionaries, being pioneers in the work among the Indian people, were all white ministers either from the DRC, the DRC Missions Church (NGSK) or the DRC Church in Africa (NGKA). These early missionaries were determined to ensure that the Gospel was brought to this neglected community in a clear and forceful way. The challenges involved were obviously enormous. The first evangelists were all Indians and by and large workers belonging to other churches. The appointment of evangelists proved to be a great asset. As co workers of the missionaries, they opened doors to Hindu homes that would have been closed to the foreign missionaries. By 1962 four congregations had been established and in 1968 the Indian Reformed Church was formed. Two years later the use of evangelists in the IRC was discontinued. Six years later the name of the church was changed to 'Reformed Church in Africa', establishing the church as an open community. Strong resolutions were taken against any form of racism. The church was now established as an open church where all races would be welcome. In the seventies it was the RCA that took the initiative to call upon the NG Kerk, the NG Kerk in Afrika and the NG Sendingkerk to consider possible unification. The RCA remained strongly focussed on reaching Muslims and Hindus. The resolution of the WARC in 1982 to suspend the NGK and the denouncement of apartheid as heresy by certain members of the RCA led to a serious confrontation with the NGK and a schism in the RCA. The reconstruction of the RCA began in 1986 and in 1990 the RCA adopted the Laudium Declaration, affirming that the church was Reformed, and an Evangelical Reformed Church. A period of remarkable rebuilding and growth ensued. The Laudium Declaration became the hallmark of the RCA. The specific reformed, evangelical and mission orientated qualities had to be met. Evangelists were again trained and sent out. The RCA offers important insights to all believers in a pluralistic community. In spite of a flood of liberal theological thinking, the RCA holds zealously to her Reformed Evangelical position as expressed in the Laudium Declaration. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

Botha, Annelie 09 April 2013 (has links)
The focus of this study is on women's socialization in terms of their position in society and the church, and their roles in the marriage relationship. A brief historical overview is given of how the understanding of marriage and sexuality has developed, with a specific focus on marriage and marital roles in the Afrikaans cultural context and religious communities. The influence of the understanding of women’s place and role in marraige on the self-understanding of women, is demonstrated. Changes in the understanding of marriage and marital roles in contemporary postmodern context are explored. The changing context has caused a crisis in the modern institutional church, which has lost touch with the context in which people work and live. The crisis with regard to the institution of marriage specifically in the context of the Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa is investigated by means of the 2008 work of Theuns Dreyer, “Die kerk , die huwelik en seks – ‘n morele krisis?” (The church, marriage and sex – a moral crisis?). He demonstrates how cultural traditions often influence the interpretation of biblical passages regarding marriage. Classical pastoral care models are examined for their transformative potential for women’s lives. Rosemary Radford Ruether ‘s eco-feminist family ethics is presented as an alternative to the ethics of hegemonic patriarchal heteronormative monogamous marriage. Because of the fact that patriarchal heteronormative ideology and theology determined (and often still determines) women's place and role in society and in marriage, the phenomena of patriarchy and hegemony are investigated. The place and role of women in biblical cultures are examined from a social-scientific perspective in order to determine the extent to which their lives were influenced by patriarchal hegemony. Finally it is demonstrated that the way in which this kind of power is exercised had and has a negative influence on the self-worth and self-esteem of women. This is one of the reasons why marriage can become a negative experience for women. Life story research was utilised in order to listen to the experiences of six women. Within life story research, the stories of people's lives are reopened, re-evaluated and retold. The social context of the person's life is important for understanding her experience. By means of life story research it becomes evident how the narrator understands her position within the social context. This study focused on women's understanding of marriage, the roles that are prescribed to them and the impact it has on their understanding of marriage and family relationships. The transformative pastoral model of Elaine Graham is applied to the results of the life story research. This demonstrates how practice can be transformed in order to correspond better with the purpose of the faith community, namely an authentic life before God for all people - including women and others who are marginalized on the basis of race, class, gender, age, sexual orientation, or any other such category. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

Plaatjies van Huffel, M.A. (Mary-Anne) 02 April 2009 (has links)
ENGLISH : Chapter 1 entails the research methodology and theoretical framework of this dissertation. One can discern seven church polity principles in this chapter to adjudicate the church polity and church governance of the Dutch Reformed Mission Church, (=DRMC), Dutch Reformed Church in Africa (=DRCA), Reformed Church in Africa (==RCA) and the United Reformed Church in Southern Africa (=URCSA): i. Christ as head of the church, ii. The autonomy of the local church, iii. The character of the denominational ties, iv. The character of the power of the major assemblies, v. The power to discipline church officials, vi. The appeal right regarding decisions of the major assemblies, vii. The capability of the major assemblies regarding misconduct. Chapter 2 deals cursorily with the church polity development of the Dutch Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (1816-1944). The foundational grounds and main notions on Doleansie Church polity are being drawn in this chapter. The Doleansie did not try to develop a new church polity system, but is rather a regression to a system of church polity as enacted by the National Synod of Dordrecht (1618-1619). Both the Doleansie church polity (oud kerkrecht) and the nieuwe kerkrecht impacted the church polity and the church governance of the mission churches. The study is therefore a interaction between the notions of A Kuyper, F C Rutgers, A F de Savornin Lohman, and H Bouwman, J van Lonkhuyzen, W A van Es, on the one side and H G Kleyn, H H Kuyper, M Bouwman and Joh Jansen on the other side. The ecclesiological basis of the governance of the church as well as the different church polity system is also discussed in this chapter. Chapter 3 focuses cursorily on the church polity and church governance of the Dutch Reformed Church, (DRC) in so far it has implications on the church polity and church governance of the Dutch Reformed Mission Church, (DRMC). At the outset the DRC subscribed to the church polity principles as presumed in the Algemeen Reglement voor het bestuur der Nederlandsche Hervormde Kerk in het Koningrijk (1816) and ignored at the inception of the mission churches the theological notions of Voetius about mission in his Politica Ecclesiastica as well as Doleansie church polity principles. The overriding jurisdiction resided in the mission commission of the DRC. In Chapters 4 to 7 an attempt is made to investigate the church polity and church governance of the DRMC, DRCA, RCA and the URCSA. Since their inception the mission churches until 1978 with the acceptance of the first church order tried to base their church polity and church order on Doleansie church polity principles. From the outset the mission churches placed emphasis on the autonomy of the local churches, the confederative character of the denomination and the disciplinary power of the major assemblies. During the nineties up to date the major assemblies gradually usurped power to make decisions on church unification, property rights and even the confessional basis of the church without giving the minor assemblies the opportunity to participate in the decision making. The church polity principles, discerned out of the Doleansie Church polity and the nieuwe kerkrecht in the preceding chapters, are synchronized in Chapter 8 in a church polity framework. A need for church order regulations that give the major assemblies in case of maladministration, impuissance, heresy or schism the right to intervene in the governance of the local congregation and to implement their decisions in minor assemblies are presented at the end of this dissertation. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Church History and Church Policy / unrestricted

Delport, Hein 20 December 2010 (has links)
’n Postfundamentele prakties-teologiese raamwerk is gevolg. ENGLISH : Disagreements between pastors and church members in the Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa require a unique space in the church in terms of a postmodern society. Different perspectives can easily lead to conflict in the church. Unresolved conflict may jeopardise the work of the clergy in a congregation. In this research, I follow a contextual approach to the pursuit of practical theology. A postfundamental practical theological framework is followed in the research. The social construction discourse and narrative epistemology offer new perspectives for developing a liminal space where more than one perspective can exist. Within a society characterised by secularism and privatisation, I examine the possibility of a space of unity amid diversity in the church. I involved six fellow researchers who have experienced conflict in a specific context within the church. We also examined the possibility of an alternative space where moments of communitas can once again occur in these stories. The research found space for this in the description of two metaphors, namely the liminal suspension bridge of grace and the dance of peace. The stories of the fellow researchers are retold within these two metaphors. My research highlights the important contribution of an interdisciplinary conversation in research. In the study, the journey theme plays an important role, and the reader is invited along with the fellow researchers into a (liminal) space to explore the conflict between the church minister and the church member. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

Viljoen, David Muller 30 June 2003 (has links)
Summaries in English and Afrikaans / This thesis embarked with the problem within the liturgy that tension exists in trying to minister justly according to the current context and trying to minister faithful to Scripture. A departing perspective is that the liturgy is the heartbeat in the congregation whereto and from where every aspect is networking. Also, that the emphasis can be on both proclaiming and celebrating in Protestant liturgies. Dialogical communication was chosen as theoretical approach together with communicative action for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The first and last chapters illustrate what is meant with the term liturgy. The problem is stated (and investigated) that liturgy is a complicated and central phenomenon, which ought to let Reformed theology as well as a postmodern context come to their own. It is also indicated that liturgical spirituality, liturgical communication and liturgical pastorate can better be used and improved during Sunday liturgies. For the liturgy in order to serve the Reformed tradition and the postmodern context, and to uplift the three liturgical aspects of spirituality, communication and pastorate, liturgical symbols and rituals are posed as timeless agents to better the liturgy. Attention was also given to symbolism in Scripture. This led to a model of application as a theory of praxis for the liturgical use of symbols and rituals. The core of this model or theory of praxis, is: I. The highest priority in liturgical symbolism will always be to promote the holy Trinity and Biblical principles. II. The supplementary use of right-brain components, such as experience, emotion and music. III. A high premium on active participation and repetition. IV. An approach of simplicity and soberness. V. Relevance to the culture and context of the day. VI. Services that take hold of total persons and focus on multiple senses and corporeality (bodily involvement). i VII. Room for transendence, imagination and mystic worship of God. VIII. Actions and services that embrace diversity, pluralism and generative variety. IX. Meetings where pastoral and therapeutic dimensions are included. X. Celebration and positive experiences in meetings. XI. The use of images, stories, metaphors and icons. XII. The use of meta-communicative principles such as attitude, intention and high validation of other people.

Van Wyk, Tanya January 2013 (has links)
The thesis focuses on the challenge of being church in the postsecular twenty-first century in an authentic way. A shift took place from modernity with concepts such as ʼnationalism‘ and ‗unity‘ to the fragmentation and diversity which are characteristic of the present-day postmodern world. After the Second World War the objective of the Ecumenical Movement was to promote and maintain the unity of the church. The unity of the church has been an issue from New Testament times up to the present day. How the relationship between unity and diversity was understood changed along with changing paradigms. During the first centuries of the church when the ecumenical creeds originated, the relationship between the unity and diversity of the church was interpreted in terms of two aspects, namely the unity of the canon which consists of a diversity of writings and the one Triune God who consists of a diversity of personae. This study argues that the great revolutions in North America and France were the breeding ground for concepts such as ʼnation‘ and ʼnationalism‘. During this period the unity of the church was interpreted in terms of the dominant ideology of nationalism and nation. The revolutions were also a force behind increasing secularisation and the church‘s loss of authority. In Germany the ideology of national-socialism compromised the integrity of the church. In South Africa apartheid had a similar effect. Secularisation, globalisation and fluidity seemingly threaten the unity of the present-day church. This study aims to contribute to an understanding of unity and diversity that could contribute to the integrity of the church in the third millennium without endorsing the hegemony of the authoritarian church. It attributes a positive meaning to plurality, diversity and the ecumenical movement. This is done after the model of the Cappadocian legacy which associated the immanence (being) of the Trinity with the economy (action) of the Trinity. This model provides the key for the solution to the problemstatement of this thesis. The thesis aims to argue for a correlation between, on the one hand Trinity (diversity in unity) and the ecclesiastical creed (confessing the catholicity of the one church), and on the other hand Christian values such as caritas (agapē) and communion (koinōnia). This study draws a correlation between these Christian values and notions from common law, namely dignitas (dignity) and fama (reputation). The epistemological model for describing a social Trinitarian ecclesiology is that of narrative theology. The ecclesiological model is that of ‗heterotopia‘, a Foucauldian conception of anti-binary space over against the 'utopia‘ as an illusioned space. Chapter 1 indicates the direction of the study: the ecclesiological challenge of the unity of the church amid diversity. The tension between unity and diversity is the crux interpretum of the ecclesiology. The Cappadocian legacy regarding the Trinity is explored as a possible solution. Epistemologically speaking, the approach of the study is a Reformed perspective on the human condition and the methodology is that of narrative. In Chapter 2 the narrative of the Cappadocian renaissance is discussed. The Cappadocian correlation between the immanence (being) of the Trinity and the economy (action) of the Trinity is described and the value thereof for a postmodern ecclesiology is explored. In Chapter 3 an alternative narrative for the church is sought by investigating the Catholic theologian, Edward Schillebeeckx‘s ecclesiology in terms of the concept of liquidity. His contribution was to replace the Catholic maxim extra ecclesiam nulla salus est with extra mundum nulla salus. Hereby he trandscends the boundaries of the church to include the whole world in God‘s salvation. From a postmodern perspective the question would be whether he was able to overcome the binary thinking of his time. The Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa is described as a case in point of a church which endorses genealogy and thereby fails to transcend the binary opposition of exclusivism and inclusivity. Nationalism and racism form the ideological underpinnings of this tendency. Theoretically the confession of unity is underscored but it does not manifest in practice. Ecclesiology should overcome binary and linear thinking in order to be relevant to postmodern culture. In Chapter 4 overcoming binary and linear thinking is illustrated by the exploring the autobiography of Protestant theologian, Jürgen Moltmann, in order to ascertain to what extent narratives of inclusivity can be of value for formulating an inclusive ecclesiology for the church in a postmodern world today. Moltmann‘s ecclesiology is investigated in terms of the concept of a social Trinity. From Moltmann‘s narrative it can been seen that he was radically inclusive in practice even before theories of radical inclusivity had been formulated. However, his emphasis on eschatology and hope tends toward apocalyptic utopian thinking. In Chapter 5 Michel Foucault‘s concept of heterotopia is used to describe reconciliatory diversity, which is characteristic of an inclusive postmodern church which is a space where unity is not threatened by diversity, where the one is not afraid of the Other. In Chapter 6 the study concludes with the finding that to be church in the third millennium entails transcending linear thinking, desacralizing time and space and bidding farewell to any notion of genealogy as constitutive for 'being‘ church. The broad space where this is possible in the 'here‘ and 'now‘ is that of heterotopia. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2013 / Dogmatics and Christian Ethics / unrestricted

Since the history and grounding of the church hymn have already been discussed in full by other researchers, chapter 1 merely offers an introductory review which provides some background to the study. In chapter 2 a categorisation of the Hymns was done in extenso and chapter 3, in turn, deals with the contents of each specific category. The aim is to determine which subjects are prevalent in Hymns and which ones are not addressed at all. On the basis of this categorisation, five subjects were finally defined which revealed obvious biblical-theological lacunae, if not deviations, all of which need to be addressed in the future. The subjects are: the ways of thinking about God, the creation, sin, baptism and hopes for the future. In chapter 4 these subjects were examined in detail. It was proved, inter alia, that the contents of the Hymns clearly reflect the traditional church doctrine and consequently fail to a large extent to address modern man (especially the young people of our time). The conclusion reached by the researcher is that Hymns addressing the contemporary problematic nature of faith have become a sine qua non. Furthermore, research on the contents of the Hymns also revealed foreign theological accents such as clear influences of the Greek Platonistic dualism where the Jenseitige is compared to the Diesseitige. This became particularly evident in the discussion on the creation. Eodem modo traces of the Pietistic indiviudalism were detected in the Hymns, where the vertical experience of God (conversion, sanctification) completely overshadows the horizontal experience of religion (social responsibility, mission work, nature conservation)! Chapter 5 comprises these recommendations in the form of remarks of a criticalappreciation nature.

Van Niekerk, Francine 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / Bibliography / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates if and how the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) uses its websites to create a public sphere. Since the end of apartheid this church and its media had to adapt to the changing environment in South Africa, particularly in its increasing use of the new media to involve believers and non-believers. Because of the internet’s potential to connect people from all over the world and its interactivity, scholars assert that the internet can create a public sphere. Habermas’ idea of the public sphere, a conceptual space where critical public discourse takes place and anyone can participate, forms the theoretical underpinning for this study. This theory, however, is slightly adapted by arguing that conflict – within bounds – is also part of the communication process within the public sphere. This study focuses on seven active websites of the DRC in order to examine its relation to public theology from a critical cultural perspective. The ideals of public theology closely relates to that of the public sphere. These ideals are a public debate on issues relating to the common good, which are discussed from a religious stance. A central view is that regulation can hinder the forming of a public sphere. Thus the nature and level of regulation on the church’s websites are examined. The nature of interaction between users and content on websites is also studied. This study combines qualitative and quantitative methods, including semi structured interviews, questionnaires, content analysis and systematic observation. The study found that Kerkbode’s Facebookpage facilitates a lively forum for debate on issues that advances the public sphere. The Facebookpage of the DRC has the potential to create such debates. On both these websites and Kerkbode-online and NG Kerk-online, regulation on midlevel curbs this potential. Other obstacles for creating a public sphere that was identified on the DRC’s websites, were personal insults, too narrow focus on internal church affairs and low participation in topics that could advance the public sphere.
