The California Psychological Inventory and Intrinsic-Extrinsic Religious MotivationSmall, Ken 01 May 1982 (has links)
The focus of the study was to investigate the nature of the apparent inconsistency reported in the literature on the relationship between personality variables and indices of religiosity. The literature indicates that indices of religiosity have been associated with labels both of "desirable" and "undesirable" personality traits to varying degrees, and no definitive conclusions have been thus far reached. The study suggested that the inconsistent evidence has been a result of a narrow definition of personality functioning and a broad definition of religiosity that has not allowed an adequate test of the relationship between personality and religiosity. The study developed the notion that a multidimensional personality measure (California Psychological Inventory -- CPI) paired with (1) a theoretically precise and psychometrically researched index of religiosity (i.e., Intrinsic Religious Motivation Scale -- IRMS) and (2) a traditional index of religiosity (i.e., denominational membership) might provide new information relative to the relationship between religiosity and personality.
The CPI and the IRMS were administered to 108 male and female Baptist, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day-Saints (LOS) and Presbyterian denominational members. CPI subscale scores and IRMS scores were analyzed by a Pearson product-moment correlational analysis, a univariate analysis of variance, and a step-wise multiple discriminate analysis. Significant correlations between IRMS scores and CPI subscale scores were found; however the variance explained was not sufficient to be of theoretical use. There were statistically significant mean differences among denominations (Baptists, LOS, Presbyterians) and between types of religious motivation (intrinsics and extrinsics defined by an IRMS score median split) on the CPI subscales. It was noted that all CPI subscale means fell within the normal range and were not clinically significant. Subjects characterized by denominational membership and religious motivation were characterized by normal personality functioning. Discriminant functions were computed which predicted group membership based on the CPI subscales at accuracy level s between 63.7% and 87.5%. It was argued that tests available to researchers do not allow an adequate test of the relationship between personality and religiosity. It was recommended that researchers study the relationship between religiosity and personality by directly examining subjects' behaviors in combination with utilizing test inventories.

Social Factors that Influence Religious Motivation of College-Age LDS Young Adults to Read Religious Texts: A Qualitative StudyWest, Dustin R. 01 August 2011 (has links)
This qualitative study investigated the religious motivation of college-age LDS young single adults. In particular, this study sought to answer the following question: “What are the contexts and social factors that influence religious motivation of collegeage LDS young adults to study religious texts?” To examine this question, a phenomenological approach was used to explore what participants had in common with feeling motivated to read religious texts. The primary sources of data came from one-on-one interviews that describe the personal experiences and perspectives of 10 college-age LDS young single adults. Sociocultural theory guided the analysis and interpretation of data and findings. Findings indicated the following: (a) regardless of the context, it appeared that involvement in discussions about the scriptures increased the likelihood of an individual feeling motivated to read, (b) even when other contexts included elements that encouraged scripture reading, it appeared that friends strongly influenced whether or not individuals felt motivated to read scriptures, (c) it appeared that environments of expectation influenced motivation to read, and (d) it appeared that individuals who spent time marking and writing in their scriptures felt motivated to read. Based on these findings, it is recommended that further research be done to explore the following: (a) What types of discussions influence motivation to read religious texts? (b) What other religious practices are influenced by friends? (c) How should expectations be communicated and maintained? (d) Is there a difference in motivation between marking (coloring) things in the scriptures and writing (journaling) in the scriptures? It is also important to examine these findings to see if they hold true within other religious contexts and denominations.

Previous issue date: 2018-03-19 / The present research aims to investigate the religious motivation behind the adhesion
of the members from Goiás to the Valley of the Dawn, with special emphasis on the
Templo Tarajo do Amanhecer in Terezópolis de Goiás. The hypothesis elaborated presents
the identity traits of the group that revealed in the research: the search for the
sacred as motivation for meaning in the individual’s life within the scenario of late modernity.
In this context of fluid relationships, the quest for and the experience of the
sacred fill the life of the adept with a sense of belonging to a group. The study proposed
here utilized the methodology of participatory observation through bibliographic review
and field research, using quantitative data as a support for qualitative research. The
research demonstrates that the motivation of the Valley of the Dawn members from
Goiás is based on the offer of life meaning made by the doctrine; in the unifying discourse
and in the similarity of the symbols that make the Valley of the Dawn narrative
complement and update the earlier religious narrative of its followers; in the sense of
belonging generated by the execution of ritual works in which the member sees himself
responsible for maintaining his own doctrine.
O estudo aqui proposto utilizou a metodologia

Previous issue date: 2014-02-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The purpose of this research is to discuss the religious transit as a social action that can only be understood from a set of social and political conditions that influence the contemporary religious behavior. The main objective is to analyze the motivations for the practice of the evangelical religious transit without religion in the context of evangelical churches , in order to understand the emergence of a new subject of faith that chooses to break with the institutional faith , without being necessarily an atheist . What motivates this person to profess a faith not affiliated with any religious institution is the key issue of this work , which is divided into three chapters . At first, we analyze the set of transformations that legitimize the behavior of transitions between the various religious ties , even go without bond. In the second , we try to define who are without religion and where they travel. And third , we discuss the key issue of this work . What motivates the Gospel to unlink , ie without an evangelical church? E no terceiro, discutimos a questão fundamental deste trabalho.

Previous issue date: 2006-02-20 / This thesis is a sociological analysis of the main motivations that made men and women let go of everything they were doing up to a certain moment and follow a messianic leader known as Inri Cristo, who claims to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. It shows, at first, a brief historical account of the three most important and thoroughly documented Brazilian messianic movements: Canudos, Juazeiro and Contestado, so as to understand the context in which such movements were brought up. This account enables the making of comparisons between these three movements and the Inri Cristo one. The research presents and analyses the appearance of the messiah, the content of his message, and the structure of his church, localized in a popular district of Curitiba. After that, there will be an analysis of the data about his disciples, which was gathered in a field research. This analysis will make it possible to understand who they are, their everyday living within the community, the way they absorb the official discourses and how they pass them on, and, most important, which the main motivations are that made them follow the messianic leader. There is also a comparative analysis between the disciples of Inri Cristo and the followers of the movements mentioned above, so as to establish convergent and divergent aspects between them. Finally, there is a presentation of the innovations brought by this messianic movement and its contributions for the study of Brazilian messianic movements.

Eutanazie z hlediska etiky a teologie / Euthanasia from the points of view of theology and ethicsBARTKOVÁ, Štěpánka January 2010 (has links)
Abstract Euthanasia from the points of view of theology and ethics Key words: euthanasia, suffering, death, dying, dignity, human rights, doctor, patient, palliative medicine, hospice care, assisted suicide, religious motivation, followers, objectors of euthanasia In my thesis I am covering the topic of ?qeuthanasia??. The main objective of this paper is to introduce the reader to the problem of euthanasia from the points of view of theology and ethics. This thesis consists of theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical part further consists of eleven chapters. In the first chapter, the types of euthanasia ares discussed (active, passive, prenatal, and assisted suicide). In the second chapter, the history of euthanasia is discussed in a great detail. The third chapter mainly concentrates on euthanasia in the world. The fourth chapter is about the criteria of death. In the fifth chapter, I address the questions of euthanasia and death in recent years. The sixth chapter is about the relationship between a doctor and a patient. The seventh chapter covers palliative medicine and the eighth chapter further expands on this subject with the topic of hospice care. In the ninth chapter, I pursue the point of religious motivational impact. The tenth and eleventh chapters are dedicated to the followers and objectors of euthanasia. The practical part concentrates on exploratory research. I have chosen sociological research using the methods of discussion. Here are three interviews with experts, who interact with dying individuals on a daily basis. These questioned specialists are believers and therefore the discourses are anonymous. The objective of these discussions was to uncover how professional in different facilities view the issues of euthanasia. This objective was sucessfully achieved.
